• Interactive Web Collaboration Platform

  I am currently unsatisfied with most, if not all, web-based collaboration tools I've ever used. Examples of what I'm considering a "web-based collaboration tool" are TWiki, WebEx, etc. What I have in mind of developing is to develop my own. The target "market" is for software/hardware developers who will likely be working on separate projects linked by a common goal. Example: You work at a company who is designing a brand new printer. So, one man is working on the ink cartridge, another on the paper feed, one on the circuitry of the printer and one more is working on the drivers. What I would like to make (unless it already exists) is a website that, upon loading, presents the user with a web that has each project within it's own bubble, graphically. These bubbles would all be linked to the central bubble of "[Company Name]". Upon selecting an individual bubble the browser would focus and zoom in on that project bubble and expand more information (in bullets or with more affiliated bubbles) about subprojects, progress, setbacks, etc. Then, at a terminal "node" (i.e. a bubble with no sub-bubbles) a selection would then load a page with information relevant to that node. That's a lot of monologue. In short, I want to know how I might approach this. My background is with algorithmic use of Python and C++. I've never done interactive web design like this; though, I have gone through the W3C tutorials on HTML4/5. I'm willing to learn a new language I'm just wondering which language/set of languages seem(s) most appropriate for this project. Thanks, world, for imparting your knowledge to me.   Hi All, I want to achieve the following aspects in the software I am building: 1. Customizable entity model 2. Customizable UI 3. Customizable workflow I have thought about an approach to achieve this, I want you to review this and make suggestions: Entity objects should be plain objects and will hold just data Separate Entity model and DB Schema by using an framework (like NHibernate?). This will allow easy modification of entity objects. Business logic to fetch/modify entities has to be granular enough so that they can be invoked as part of the workflow. Business objects should not hold any state, and hence will contain only static methods The workflow will decide depending upon the "state" of an entity/entities which methods on business object/objects to invoke. The workflow should obtain the results of the processing and then pass on the business objects to the appropriate UI screen. The UI screen has to contain instructions about how to display a given entity/entites. Possibly the UI has to be generated dynamically based on a set of UI instructions. (like XUL) What do you think about this approach? Suggest which existing frameworks (like NHiberante, Window Workflow) fit into this model, so that I will not spend time on coding these frameworks Also suggest is there any asp.net framework that can generate dynamic asp.net ajax pages based on a set of UI instructions (like Mozilla XUL)? I have recently been exploring Apache Ofbiz and was impressed by its ability to customize most areas of the application: UI, workflow, entities. Is there any similar (not necessarily an ERP system) application developed in C#/.Net which offers a similar level of customization? • Need a design pattern for representing multiple information sources

  I'm building a Java application that retrieves information from differing information sources. I'm using a sensor, a set of RecordStores and a few online web services. In the basic application all these resources are loaded by default. Some of these sources are directly read in a separate thread (load database, read sensor etc.). From this basic application some functions are started that use these sources. The classes that contain these functions (usually combining multiple sources information) are currently paramterized with a set of resources like this: AppPart a1 = new AppPart(source1, source2, source3); I could also do it like this AppPart a1 = new AppPart(this); ..where I need to make my sources public in order to read them. I'm also thinking about a kind of stage/collection to publish all sources on, e.g: public SourceCollectionStage sStage = new SourceCollectionStage(); and later: sStage.getSensor(); .. for example. What do you guys think is the best or most often used way to do this? Btw: the user interface is often implemented by the specific funtion classes, not by the main class. Should I do this in another way?

• Holding value in collection

  I have a application which is on timesheet. I have total of 54 columns out of which 10 columns are visible rest invisible. First 3 columns are Project, MileStone and Classes. Rest are Sun- Sat work hrs. Now I have a column named 'taskid' as SunTaskID,MonTaskID and so on till SatTaskID for holding each days taskid. Now on the selection of SunHrs (Sunday's Work Hrs), i retrieve that days taskid and on the basis of task id i retrieve attachments which is displayed under a listbox. Now the problem is that since a day can have multiple attachments and a user can attach multiple attachments at time. He can enter values from grid to. Grid cells are editable. I am using BindingList(of TaskClass) in VB.Net for binding grid. I have total 54 properties n my task class. So i want to what property do i need to hod each days attachment and in what way. Earlier I tried Dictionary. But i was not aware of its usage as a property so i gave. Then prepared a separate class for attachment but, it was difficult to synchronize the existing attachments with taskid...

• Autorotation and multiple view controllers

  I'm creating an iPad application which should only work in portrait and portait upsidedown modes. For performance reasons in my applicationDidFinishLaunching method I'm creating several viewControllers, and adding them to my main window as subviews. I then hide the ones I don't want to see straight away. There is no tab bar or navigation controller. My problem is that only the first viewController seems to be receiving the rotate calls. I have verified this by swapping around the order in which I add the subviews to the main window and NSLog's. Is there some way I can force all the controllers to receive the calls? Some of my views are designed to lay over the top of another view, but this behind view will not always be the same one - so it seems to make sense to have the overlay view in a separate view controller. Am I doing something fundamentally wrong, and that's why it's not behaving as I would expect?   Ok so I have a regex and I need it to find matches in a multiline string. The regex I am using is: @"([A-Za-z0-9\(\) \-\/]+):([A-Za-z0-9\(\) \-\/]+).*" It does work but only picks up the first line and separates it into the two groups like I want but it stops at that point. I have tried the Multiline option but it doesn't make any difference. I must admit I am new to the regex world. Any help is appreciated.

• .NET Framework 4 in WPF not showing bitmap effect

  I am having a problem using VS2010 and framework version 4 with bitmap effects. If I have the code below and run it in a WPF application using the .NET Framework 4 Client Profile, the bitmap effect does not appear. If I set the framework version to .NET Framework 3.5 Client Profile (and change no code), it runs as expected. At first, I thought it was a problem in my application, but I removed the code and put it in a separate standalone application and it behaves the same. Anyone else verify that the same problem happens? What is happening here? I need to pass an instance of a previuosly initialized object (in the example, an instance of the Something class) at the callback function. I tryed to use call_user_func(), but doesnt work (becose in this way i miss the matches parameter). Is there a way to do that, or have i to separate the process (doing before preg_match_all, for each match retrieve the replace value, and then a simple preg_replace)?

  hi folks, i need to get splited intervals and the number of overlapping intervals, eg basedata: interval A: startTime 08:00, endTime 12:00 interval B: startTime 09:00, endTime 12:00 interval C: startTime 12:00, endTime 16:00 interval D: startTime 13:00, endTime 14:00 now i have a separate interval from 10:00 to 15:00 and have to determine what intervals are intersected at first. result should be something like: 1: 10:00 - 12:00 ( intersecting with interval A ) 2: 10:00 - 12:00 ( intersecting with interval B ) 3: 12:00 - 15:00 ( intersecting with interval C ) 4: 13:00 - 14:00 ( intersecting with interval D ) this part works fine, the following causes the trouble: i need some kind of weighting for parallel intervals. this also means, that it can occur that an interval-intersection must be splitted n times, if it's ( partly ) intersected by another one. in the upper example the expecting result would be: 1: 10:00 - 12:00 -> weightage: 50% 2: 10:00 - 12:00 -> weightage: 50% 3.1: 12:00 - 13:00 -> weightage: 1oo% 3.2: 13:00 - 14:00 -> weightage: 50% 3.3: 14:00 - 15:00 -> weightage: 50% 4: 13:00 - 14:00 -< weightage: 100% the splitting of interval 3 is caused by the intersecting with interval 4 between 13:00 and 14:00. sql-server is ms-sql 2008. thanks for help in advance!

• Submit WordPress form password programmatically

  How can I let a user access a WordPress protected page with a URL that will submit the password in the form below? I want to be able to let a user get to a password protected WordPress page without needing to type the password, so when they go to the page, the password is submitted by a POST URL on page load. This not intended to be secure in any respect; I'll need to hardcode the password in the URL and the PHP. It's just for simplicity for the user, and once they're in, the cookie will let them in for 10 more days. I will select the particular user with separate PHP function that determines their IP or WordPress login status. I used Wireshark to find the POST string: post_password=mypassword&Submit=Submit but using this URL mydomain.com/wp-pass.php?post_password=mypassword&Submit=Submit gives me a blank page. • Open source gravatar-like implementations?

  I'm already using gravatar icons for the users of my web service. However, I'm finding several problems with this approach: Only a small percentage of the users take the time to set up a gravatar profile. My users are not tech-savvy, but would be likely to add a dedicated photo to my site. Users of my service are encouraged to use images that depict them in proper uniform for the industry my service relates to. They wouldn't want that same picture to be used for personal purposes throughout the internet. They would not take the time or effort to manage a separate email address and gravatar account just to have an "in-uniform" profile photo for my service. Before I implement my own profile image feature, I was wondering if there are any open-source solutions that I could leverage with similar features to gravatar. Specifically: The ability to display any size thumbnail (up to 512px would be fine) Takes care of caching different sized thumbnails Has support for something like identicons, preferably pluggable with different style algorithms (monsters, etc.), even better if I can customize these Ability to fall-back to gravatar if no photo found Does anything like this exist? I haven't found it yet if it does.

• Thread Message Loop Hangs in Delphi

I have a simple Delphi program that I'm working on, in which I am attempting to use threading to separate the functionality of the program from its GUI, and to keep the GUI responsive during more lengthy tasks, etc. Basically, I have a 'controller' TThread, and a 'view' TForm. The view knows the controller's handle, which it uses to send the controller messages via PostThreadMessage. I have had no problem in the past using this sort of model for forms which are not the main form, but for some reason, when I attempt to use this model for the main form, the message loop of the thread just quits.   I must be missing something obvious here but ... UIControl has a method - (void)addTarget:(id)target action:(SEL)action forControlEvents: (UIControlEvents)controlEvents which lets you add an action to be called when any of the given controlEvents occur. ControlEvents are a bitmask of events which tell you if a touch went down, or up inside, or was dragged etc., there's about 16 of them, you or them together and get called when any of them occur. The selector can have one of the following signatures - (void)action - (void)action:(id)sender - (void)action:(id)sender forEvent:(UIEvent *) none of those tell you what the control event bitmask was. The UIEvent is something slightly different, it's related to the actual touch event and doesn't (I think) contain the UIControlEvent. The sender (UIControl) doesn't have a way to find the control events either. I'd like to have one method which deals with a number of control events as I have some common code regardless of which event or events happened but I still need to know what the UIControlEvents were for some specific processing. Am I missing a way to find out what UIControlEvents were used when the action was called or do I really have to separate my code into -(void)actionWithUIControlEventX; -(void)actionWithUIControlEventY;

  I have faced this question in my Interview as well. I do have many confusion with Session Scope & it management in java. In web.xml we do have the entry : <session-config> <session-timeout> 30 </session-timeout> </session-config> What does it indicate actually ? Is is scope of whole project ? Another point confusing me is how can we separate the session scope of multiple request in the same project? Means if I am logging in from a PC & at the same time I am logging in from another PC, does it differentiate it ? Also, another confusing thing is the browser difference. Why does the different Gmails possible to open in different browsers ? And Gmail can prevent a session from Login to Logout. How is it maintained with our personal web ?

• Best practices for Java logging from multiple threads?

  I want to have a diagnostic log that is produced by several tasks managing data. These tasks may be in multiple threads. Each task needs to write an element (possibly with subelements) to the log; get in and get out quickly. If this were a single-task situation I'd use XMLStreamWriter as it seems like the best match for simplicity/functionality without having to hold a ballooning XML document in memory. But it's not a single-task situation, and I'm not sure how to best make sure this is "threadsafe", where "threadsafe" in this application means that each log element should be written to the log correctly and serially (one after the other and not interleaved in any way). Any suggestions? I have a vague intuition that the way to go is to use a queue of log elements (with each one able to be produced quickly: my application is busy doing real work that's performance-sensitive), and have a separate thread which handles the log elements and sends them to a file so the logging doesn't interrupt the producers. The logging doesn't necessarily have to be XML, but I do want it to be structured and machine-readable. edit: I put "threadsafe" in quotes. Log4j seems to be the obvious choice (new to me but old to the community), why reinvent the wheel...

  I have an app that uploads to Google Spreadsheets via the GData ObjC client for Mac/iPhone. It works fine as is. I'm trying to get the upload portion on its own thread and I'm attempting to call the upload method on a new thread. Look: -(void)establishNewThreadToUpload { [NSThread detachNewThreadSelector:@selector(uploadToGoogle) toTarget:self withObject:nil]; } -(void)uploadToGoogle { NSAutoReleasePool *pool = [[NSAutoReleasePool alloc] init]; //works fine [helper setNewServiceWithName:username password:password]; //works fine [helper fetchUserSpreadsheetFeed]; //inside the helper class, fetchUserSpreadsheet feed calls ANOTHER method, which //calls ANOTHER METHOD and so on, until the object is either uploaded or fails //However, once the class gets to the end of fetchUserSpreadsheetFeed //control is passed back to this method, and [pool release]; //is called. The thread terminates and nothing ever happens. } If I forget about using a separate thread, everything works like it's supposed to.   Using the Guava library, I have the following situation: SetMultimap<ImmutableFoo, Set<Foo>> setMM = HashMultimap.create(); Set<Foo> mask = Sets.newHashSet(); // ... some iteration construct { setMM.put(ImmutableFoo1, Sets.difference(SomeSetFoo1,mask)); setMM.put(ImmutableFoo1, Sets.difference(SomeSetFoo2,mask)); mask.add(someFoo); } that is, the same iteration to create the setMM is also used to create the mask - this can of course result in changes to hashCode()s and create duplicates within the SetMultimap backing. Ideally, I'd like the duplicates to drop without me having to make it happen, and avoid repeating the iteration to separately construct the multimap and mask. Any easy libraries/Set implementations to make that happen? Alternatively, can you identify a better way to drop the duplicates than: for (ImmutableFoo f : setMM.keySet()) setMM.putAll(f,setMM.removeAll(f)); revisiting the elements is probably not a performance problem, since I could combine a separate filter operation that needs to visit all the elements anyway.

• When *not* to use prepared statements?

  I'm re-engineering a PHP-driven web site which uses a minimal database. The original version used "pseudo-prepared-statements" (PHP functions which did quoting and parameter replacement) to prevent injection attacks and to separate database logic from page logic. It seemed natural to replace these ad-hoc functions with an object which uses PDO and real prepared statements, but after doing my reading on them, I'm not so sure. PDO still seems like a great idea, but one of the primary selling points of prepared statements is being able to reuse them… which I never will. Here's my setup: The statements are all trivially simple. Most are in the form SELECT foo,bar FROM baz WHERE quux = ? ORDER BY bar LIMIT 1. The most complex statement in the lot is simply three such selects joined together with UNION ALLs. Each page hit executes at most one statement and executes it only once. I'm in a hosted environment and therefore leery of slamming their servers by doing any "stress tests" personally. Given that using prepared statements will, at minimum, double the number of database round-trips I'm making, am I better off avoiding them? Can I use PDO::MYSQL_ATTR_DIRECT_QUERY to avoid the overhead of multiple database trips while retaining the benefit of parametrization and injection defense? Or do the binary calls used by the prepared statement API perform well enough compared to executing non-prepared queries that I shouldn't worry about it? EDIT: Thanks for all the good advice, folks. This is one where I wish I could mark more than one answer as "accepted" — lots of different perspectives. Ultimately, though, I have to give rick his due… without his answer I would have blissfully gone off and done the completely Wrong Thing even after following everyone's advice. :-) Emulated prepared statements it is!

• moving audio over a local network using GStreamer

  I need to move realtime audio between two Linux machines, which are both running custom software (of mine) which builds on top of Gstreamer. (The software already has other communication between the machines, over a separate TCP-based protocol - I mention this in case having reliable out-of-band data makes a difference to the solution). The audio input will be a microphone / line-in on the sending machine, and normal audio output as the sink on the destination; alsasrc and alsasink are the most likely, though for testing I have been using the audiotestsrc instead of a real microphone. GStreamer offers a multitude of ways to move data round over networks - RTP, RTSP, GDP payloading, UDP and TCP servers, clients and sockets, and so on. There's also many examples on the web of streaming both audio and video - but none of them seem to work for me, in practice; either the destination pipeline fails to negotiate caps, or I hear a single packet and then the pipeline stalls, or the destination pipeline bails out immediately with no data available. In all cases, I'm testing on the command-line just gst-launch. No compression of the audio data is required - raw audio, or trivial WAV, uLaw or aLaw encoding is fine; what's more important is low-ish latency.

• Best approach for a multi-tab ASP.NET AJAX control?

  Looking for some implementation advice: I have a page that has a 3-tab ajaxToolkit:TabContainer. The purpose of the page is to expose a calculator that has two basic inputs: geo-location and date. The three tabs are labeled "City and State", "Postal Code", and "GPS Coordinates". The layout of each tab container is the same for each tab, with the exception of the location section; the location section changes because each type of location has different inputs. For example, to specify city/state, there will be three fields: city, country, and state (country and state will use cascading drop-down lists). But Postal code requires only one field (which will validate via regular expression for allowed countries). See the example design mockup: So, what I WOULD LIKE to do (in order to minimize duplicate code), is to have a common control that contains the layout and structure of the calculator without specifying anything about the location section. Then, I'd like to be able to pull in each of the unique location controls based on what tab is selected. The tab structure exists at the page level, not in a control. Any advice? I was looking at templated controls (see MSDN article here), but I'm not convinced that it's the right solution. If I HAVE to create three separate controls with similar layouts and common elements, then that's what I have to do. But REALLY, I'd prefer a more elegant, inheritance-based solution. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

  Imagine you live in very simplified example land - and imagine that you've got a table of people in your MySQL database: create table person ( person_id int, name text ) select * from person; +-------------------------------+ | person_id | name | +-------------------------------+ | 1 | Alice | | 2 | Bob | | 3 | Carol | +-------------------------------+ and these people need to collaborate/work together, so you've got a link table which links one person record to another: create table person__person ( person__person_id int, person_id int, other_person_id int ) This setup means that links between people are uni-directional - i.e. Alice can link to Bob, without Bob linking to Alice and, even worse, Alice can link to Bob and Bob can link to Alice at the same time, in two separate link records. As these links represent working relationships, in the real world they're all two-way mutual relationships. I realize that I can do union and distinct queries and whatnot to present the relationships as mutual in the UI, but is there a better way? I've got a feeling that there is a better way, one where this issue would neatly melt away by setting up the database properly, but I can't see it. Anyone got a better idea?

• Using Qt signals/slots instead of a worker thread

  I am using Qt and wish to write a class that will perform some network-type operations, similar to FTP/HTTP. The class needs to connect to lots of machines, one after the other but I need the applications UI to stay (relatively) responsive during this process, so the user can cancel the operation, exit the application, etc. My first thought was to use a separate thread for network stuff but the built-in Qt FTP/HTTP (and other) classes apparently avoid using threads and instead rely on signals and slots. So, I'd like to do something similar and was hoping I could do something like this: class Foo : public QObject { Q_OBJECT public: void start(); signals: void next(); private slots: void nextJob(); }; void Foo::start() { ... connect(this, SIGNAL(next()), this, SLOT(nextJob())); emit next(); } void Foo::nextJob() { // Process next 'chunk' if (workLeftToDo) { emit next(); } } void Bar::StartOperation() { Foo* foo = new Foo; foo->start(); } However, this doesn't work and UI freezes until all operations have completed. I was hoping that emitting signals wouldn't actually call the slots immediately but would somehow be queued up by Qt, allowing the main UI to still operate. So what do I need to do in order to make this work? How does Qt achieve this with the multitude of built-in classes that appear to perform lengthy tasks on a single thread?

• SDL Tridion Schema Field "List of Links" Options

  I'm looking to create an SDL Tridion schema with a list of repeatable links while avoiding multiple fields per link. Hyperlink In a rich text field I have the following options for creating a hyperlink:* Component Anchor http:// mailto: Other When content authors create one of these hyperlinks, they have the option to select linked (visible) text as well as title and target attributes that function like typical HTML hyperlinks. "Richtext" means a Text field with Height of the Text Area = at least 2 rows with Allow Rich Text Formatting selected. Single Schema Field Link When creating a single schema field, I see these options: External Link (author options will include http://, mailto, Other) Multimedia Link Component Link (which can allow Multimedia Values) Current Ideas The best out-of-the-box (OOTB) setups I've found for this "list of links" is either offering: a single 2-line RTF with instructions to create a hyperlink (of any type) in that field separate fields for each type as well as additional fields for display name, target, and title (where the fields are assembled through template code), authors fill in only one of the fields (component link or external) Question Is there a way in the schema form designer, by updating the schema source, or through code to offer the same (RTF) hyperlink drop-down options, but in a single field? I could be missing something, but recognize this scenario isn't supported OOTB.

• Problems pulling data from NSMutableArray for MapKit?

  Hi, I have a class (DataImporter) which has the code to download an RSS feed. I also have a view and separate class (TableView) which displays the data in a UITableView and starts the parsing process, storing parsed information in an NSMutableArray (items). Now I wish to add a UIMapView which displays the items in the items NSMutableArray. I'm struggling to transfer the data into the new class (mapView) to show it in the map - and I preferably don't want to have to create a new class to download the data again for the map. Is there a way I can transfer the information from the NSMutableArray (items) to the mapView? Thanks.
