• Best practice, or generally best way to set up web-hosting server, permissions, etc. [closed]

  Hi, I'm about to set up a server upon which a friend and I will be hosting web sites, and I'll be using Debian. I've set up a LAMP solution many times just to using for local testing purposes, but never for actual production use. I was wondering what are the best practices are in terms of setting the server up, in reference specifically to accessing the web root directory. A couple of the options I have seen: Set up a single user account on the server for us both to use and use a virtual host to point to the somewhere in the home directory, e.g. /home/webdev/www. Set each of us up a user account, and grant permissions in some way to /var/www (What would be the best way? Set up a new group?) I want to get this right when I first set this up as there won't be any going back for a while once our first site is up and running. Appreciate any guidance in advance.

• Website .htaccess file for Wordpress sub folder

  I developed a Flash website for a client and added the following .htaccess file in the root directory and the non-www to www redirect works perfectly. RewriteEngine On RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} ^website.com [NC] RewriteRule ^(.*)$ http://www.website.com/$1 [L,R=301] I was also asked to add a Wordpress blog so I put it in a new directory folder (as opposed to a sub domain) with so the URL is www.website.com/blog Does Google now see the main site and blog as two different websites? Do I need to link them together using another .htaccess file in the Wordpress Root so Google automatically crawls the whole domain? Any help appreciated....

• Script for Creating Multiple ZIP archives from Multiple Folders

  I want to be able to right click multiple folders inside of a directory in nautilus, and be able to create seperate zip archives from those folders in that same directory. If possible it would also be great if it automatically deleted the old folders. So, if I have 30 folders, I want to select those using control-shift, then go to scripts and run the script, and just have those 30 folders compressed into seperate .zip archives, and have the old folders deleted (if possible). Anyone know how to accomplish this? I suck with terminal, and am looking for a script solution.

  I have someone i'm making a website for with a domain name and current website hosted at fasthosts. I've built them a website hosted at a different host, unlimitedwebhosting. The website i've made them is in a directory like this. www.mysite.com/dev/0002 So fasthosts: Is the registrar for the domain name, it also has all of the email addresses and their current site. unlimitedwebhosting: Has the new site in a sub directory, like .com/dev/0002 Is it possible to keep the domain name and email addresses all hosted at fasthosts and to have the new website hosted in my unlimitedwebhosting account and to somehow have the domain point to the new website?

• How do I install graphviz 2.29 in 12.04?

  In my ubuntu 12.04, the graphviz is not the latest version(2.29). I need some features available in the latest version of graphviz. I tried to install the graphviz version 2.29, which requires libgraphviz4(=2.18). I anyhow installed libgraphviz4 and installed graphviz 2.29. For that I have to remove packages libcdt4 and libpathplan4. Now whenever I try to generate graph, I get some problems: For e.g.: dot -Kfdp -n -Tpng -o samplePOS.png forcePOS.dot It says: dot: error while loading shared libraries: libgvc.so.6: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory neato -Tps -o sample_1.ps sourcedot.gv It says: neato: error while loading shared libraries: libgvc.so.6: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory So, I am looking for some ways so that I can run graphviz 2.29 in my ubuntu 12.04.

• Ambiance GTK theme customisation *just* for one user

  Is it possible to customise the appearance of the Ambiance theme just for one user? I have read about the possibility of doing this: sudo vim /usr/share/themes/Ambiance/gtk-2.0/gtkrc but could something be done to change: just one setting for just one user? Perhaps changing something in the user's .themes directory? Notice: I would prefer not to copy the full theme to the user directory, just to provide an override mechanism after the "global" theme is applied, independently from the theme if possible, but anyway just specifying what needs to be different, not duplicating the whole theme definition.

  I have a strange issue with my website and it seems i am unable to understand what cauese the problem.I would highly appreciate your help.The Scenario is I have two websites. Website A Website B Website A is simply hosted within the root directory of my hosting account.Within this root *directory* i have a sub folder " subfolder A " and within which is another subfolder " subfolder B " that contains my site Website B so the path looks like root/sublfolder_A/subfolder_B/ that contains my **Website B ( i.e subfolder_B) ** All goes fine.When i access the website B from my desktop/Laptop Website B is loaded normally. but when i access the Website through a mobile device , mobile site of Website A is loaded while as it should load website_B Also , to let you know , both websites have different URL's and not subdomain's or anything. What could be the problem ? htaccess of website B or website A ? or something else ? • Bumblebee stopped working after the today's update

  I've followed this guide to put Bumblebee to work. Everything was working perfect and I was happy playing my Steam games using primusrun to run them. But after today's update, which updated something related to NVIDIA, Bumblebee is not working anymore: $ primusrun glxgears 2014/06/01 02:36:36 socat[4154] E connect(3, AF=1 "/var/run/bumblebee.socket", 27): No such file or directory primus: fatal: failed to connect to Bumblebee daemon: No such file or directory I'm using Ubuntu 14.04, I have an optimus notebook with a dedicated Nvidia GeForce 730M and an integrated Intel card. • Fixing a broken toolbox (In Visual Studio 2010 SP1)

  I was recently running into a situation where every time I opened Visual Studio 2010 SP1, the following message would appear for about 60 seconds or so: "Loading toolbox content from package Microsoft.VisualStudio.IDE.Toolbox.ControlInstaller.ToolboxInstallerPackage '{2C98B35-07DA-45F1-96A3-BE55D91C8D7A}'" After finally get fed up with the issue, I started researching it and decided that I’d share the steps that I took to resolve it below: I first made a complete backup of my registry. I then removed the following key: [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Microsoft\VisualStudio\10.0\Packages\{2c298b35-07da-45f1-96a3-be55d91c8d7a}] I went to the following directory: C:\Users\Your Name Here\AppData\Local\Microsoft\VisualStudio\10.0\ and created a folder called bk and moved the .tbd files to that folder (they are hidden so you will have to show all files). I then removed the .tbd files in the root directory. I then launched Visual Studio 2010 SP1 again and it recreated those files and the problem was gone. • Computer won't wake from hibernate

  So I have a pretty dumb problem...I accidentaly pressed Hibernate while trying to Restart...since then my computer wont boot into Ubuntu anymore (through normal mode or single user mode - rescue mode that is)...all I get is: mount: mounting /dev on /root/dev failed: No such file or directory mount: mounting /sys/ on root/sys failed: No such file or directory mount: mounting /proc on /root/proc failed: No such file or dirctory Target filesystem doesn't have requested /sbin/init. No init found. Try passing init= boot arg. BusyBox v1.15.3 (Ubuntu 1:1.15.3-1ubuntu5) built-in shell (ash) Enter 'help' for a list of built-in commands. (initramfs) Obviously I tried to fire up the Live CD and run fsck (or e2fsck) from there (or just try to do a Check of /dev/sdb1 my partition via gparted - which is basically the same thing). But it doesn't allow me...both gparted and fsck say that the device is busy (I can't even mount it in the LiveCD to rescue data)...umount /dev/sdb1 says its not mounted...any ideas?

• Security for LDAP authentication for Collabnet

  In a previous post, I wrote about how to get LDAP authentication working in Collabnet. By default, all LDAP users are put into the Users role on the server.  For most purposes, this is just fine, and I don’t have a way to change this.  The documentation gives hints that you can add them to other roles, but for now, I don’t have the need. However, adding permissions to different repositories is a different question. To add them, go to the repositories list, select Access Rules and then you can enter in their username, as it sits in Active Directory to the lists for the repositories or for the predefined groups that you have created.  To my knowledge, you cannot use the Active Directory groups in collabnet, which is a big problem.  Needing to micromanage users really limits the usefulness of the LDAP integration. • Nautilus is extremely slow

  I am on Ubuntu 11.04. And Nautilus is very slow. It opens directories for 3-5 seconds even if a directory contains just a few small files. Even selecting of a file or directory with narrow keys is extremely slow and it rises my CPU usage up to 100%. It makes it almost unusable. But I noticed that if I start my nautilus as superuser: $ gksu nautilus then it works just fine. It is fast and responsive. So what can I do to fix this? Any help is really appreciated.

• Deleted files not increasing available free space on Ubuntu (as reported by df -h)

  I am writing data munging scripts (python and bash), to munge data and import large quantities of text files into a database. I am currently in the test phase, so I am generating several K's of files and deleting them (the files consume about 20G of space). After a test run, I delete the files (sometimes without having imported into the database). I notice that there is a steady decrease in the amount of free space on my disk (as reported by df -h). I don't understand this, as I use rm * (in the data directory), and in the cases where I use Nautilus, I empty the Trash bin as well. Similarly, I notice that when I import the data into the (postgresql) database, and then delete the data from the tables using DELETE FROM tablename;, the size consumed in the postgresql data directory does not go down either. Currently, I have lost approximately 200G from hard drive, and I need to reclaim that - but don't know what to do to reclaim it - any ideas?. I am running Ubuntu 10.0.4 LTS + postgresql 8.4

  every other browser installed is working fine..! except this Firefox. what are the things that I need to check, to make firefox work on my computer. I am a newbie for ubuntu. • Installation of ANYTHING failed

  I got an issue concerning Chrome. It launches now perfectly - still trying to install something else i see - You might want to run 'apt-get -f install' to correct these: The following packages have unmet dependencies: google-chrome-stable : Depends: lib32gcc1 (>= 1:4.1.1) but it is not installable Depends: lib32stdc++6 (>= 4.6) but it is not installable Depends: libc6-i386 (>= 2.11) but it is not installable E: Unmet dependencies. Try 'apt-get -f install' with no packages (or specify a solution). I remember i deleted some folder concerning chrome when it wasn't launchable - don't actually remember what directory exactly. Now - when i try this - "sudo apt-get -f update && sudo apt-get -f install" - i come across an error: sh: 0: getcwd() failed: No such file or directory Seems that deletion was fatal. Got any ideas? • Installing g77 in Ubuntu 12.04 LTS (32bit)

  I am using Ubuntu 12.04 LTS (32bit-i386) in my desktop PC. I need g77 compiler for some specific applications. The app can only be installed after having g77 compiler. This specific app is designed based on g77 fortran compiler and can't be used with gfortran which is the standard available compiler in 12.04 LTS. And guide me the procedure to install g77 in 12.04. I have been trying apt-get update & apt-get install g77 after changing the sources.list file. After processing I am able to install g77 but when i try to compile a fortran program, it shows error /usr/bin/ld: cannot find crt1.o: No such file or directory /usr/bin/ld: cannot find crti.o: No such file or directory /usr/bin/ld: cannot find -lgcc_s collect2: ld returned 1 exit status Please help me. I m struggling a lot to fix this.

• Permissions scheme not working

  I am currently building a home server and I am trying to give minimal permissions to every service. I am new to permissions management and this is an awesome learning experience for me :). drwxr----- 7 reazem enter-home 4096 Sep 9 21:43 reazem drwxrws--- 3 reazem minidlna 4096 Sep 9 21:36 media reazem is my home folder and media is my media folder, it is situated directly inside my home. The minidlna user is part of the following groups : minidlna, enter-home. I get the following error: Media directory not accessible! [/home/reazem/media] I was hoping that because the minidlna user is part of the enter-home group, it could get inside the home folder, and then inside the media folder because it is in the minidlna group. Where is my mistake? Edit: I found out that chmod g+x /home/reazem solved the problem, but why? Why would you need the execute permission to get inside another directory? Thank you!

I would like to markup my business listing 'profile' level pages for display as enhanced listings/rich-snippets complete with business names, addresses and phone numbers. I would also like to display site-links and path-based breadcrumbs to help users navigate site directory hierarchy (which is deep). Is there a limit to the amount of breadcrumbs a site can leave? Is there a separate limit on the number of breadcrumbs which Google/Bing will display in the SERP? What kind of markup language(s) would be needed to best position my site to show site-links AND breadcrumbs? • possible to use an IP derived from Dynamic DNS in htaccess IP allow/deny commands?

  On a website I manage, I want to use an .htaccess file to allow access to a certain administrative directory only from my home IP address, which is dynamically assigned by my ISP and therefore changes -- not regularly, but it does happen. I also have an account from DynDNS and have one of the auto-update clients making sure it always points to my actual home IP address. I don't actually host anything at home; I just have set up the Dynamic DNS account. Is there any way to combine these features: that is, is it possible write the .htaccess allow/deny commands at my outside webhost in a way that my home IP address is not hard coded into the command, but instead is somehow derived from the Domain Name that the DynDNS has assigned me, by doing a real-time lookup every time the directory's .htaccess file is hit?
