  • When to use ellipsis after menu items

    In pretty much all applications that have a menu bar, some of the items have an ellipsis (...) after them, and some don't. Is there a well known convention on when to put that ellipsis there and when not to? When do you do it? Do you do it? I have looked at various windows applications, and this is what I have come to: Ellipsis Menu items which opens a form that require user input to do something (Replace, Go to, Font) No ellipsis Menu items which just does something (Cut, Paste, Exit, Save) Menu items which opens a form that does not require user input (About, Check for Updates) But then there always seems to be menu items that doesn't follow this rule. For example the Help items (How do I, Search, Index) and the Find and Replace (Quick Find, Find in Files, Find Symbol) in Visual Studio. So after thinking about it a bit more I know think this might be the thing: Ellipsis Menu items that will definitely open a modal window. No Ellipsis Menu items that opens a non-modal window. Menu items that doesn't open any window. Menu items that most likely won't open a modal window (Like Save, which does open a modal window if you haven't saved before or something like that, but otherwise don't) What do you guys think?

    I've a window which I draw a custom border/caption, in order to do that I handle WM_NCPAINT message. My captin has two backgrounds a brighter one when it is the active window, and a darker one when it is in the background. But under some circumstances, for example when the window loses/gain focus, my caption is not updated so I end with the wrong background. Until now I've handled WM_NCACTIVATE, and send a RedrawWindow(hwnd, NULL, NULL, RDW_FRAME|RDW_INVALIDATE), but this causes the whole window to repaint. Do you have any advice about this?

    Note: this is about Firefox extension, not a js general question. In Firefox extension project I need my javascript object to be initialized just once per Firefox window. Otherwise each time I open my window a new timers will be engaged, new properties will be used, so everything will start from scratch. hope example below will demystify my question :) var StupidExtension { statusBarValue: "Not Initialized Yet", startup: function () { ... // Show statusBarValue in Status Bar Panel }, initTimerToRetrieveStatusBarValueFromNetwork: function () { ... } } so each time you hit Ctrl+N a new window you will see "Not Initialized Yet" and then new timer will be fired, so after some time it retrieve data from network you will see value also on second window and so on. Ideally would be to have just a single timer function running and updating all status bar panels in all Firefox windows. Of course I can do some caching, like saving the value in prefs or some other storage, then show it from there. But I feel like this is artificial. So the question will be is there "native" technique of making static some parts of the object among all Firefox window instances?

I'm trying to figure out how I can change the behavior of the wx.aui.AuiManager so that when a window is dragged to become floating, it will become a proper window with Minimize and Maximize buttons and shown in the Taskbar. Apparently there is some subclassing done of the standard window to remove those exact features but I'm not having any luck in getting them back.

In my second window I've a button If I click on that button my intension is to reload parent page (i.e page1).     The number of platforms I have to develops apps for is increasing and It brings me lots of stress to learn new technologies for each target platform. I found out that Telerik's Kendo UI is very good to build websites that look and feel native on mobile platforms (e.g. iOS and Android). My question is, is it possible to build HTML5 apps to deploy them on iTunes App Store and Google Play? Please note that I am eager to know the possibility of creating apps (complete apps bundled in standard format of Apple and Google for distribution in their respective mobile app markets) but not websites.

Want to start out platform agnostic, not a mobile app. There will be gridwork type of 3D objects and diagraming being represented - think AutoCAD or Minority Report. Want to build a prototype that will have hooks into a database to represent the data.   • Map browser DOM using Javascript

    I'm trying to map a browsers DOM using javascript. It should list all the functions and attributes associated with it and it should also recurse through any object attributes. Now as I understand it 'window' is the most top-level node (although I've see a reference to 'top' as well in Chrome.) then 'document', etc. However I've never seen 'Node' under 'window' and yet I can call it. So where is 'Node' located? Is there a level above 'window' or is it a separate object (W3C says it's supposed to be inherited by 'document' only.)? I've been playing with a function to do this but I keep getting weird results so I'm not post it here. Alternatively - is it possible to get the properties from the object types instead of the object reference itself? for example 'DOMWindow' instead of 'window'. I think this would stop duplicating data from inherited objects.

Before, I used to output data using only opencv functions: cvNamedWindow("Image 1"); cvShowImage("Image 1", img); So I change image, then call: cvShowImage function and so on. But If I want to look at more than one image, then every new image needs its own window to be shown there And what I want is to put every such an output opencv's window inside one big main window. Is it possible to do it? And how?

    Currently within my Project we are using JSDoc, we have recently started to implement Angular and I want to continue using JSDoc to ensure that all the documentation is within the same place.   • view-port resize vs document resize in IE

    window.resize event in IE doesnt do what i thought it does. I thought it only triggered when the physical window/view-port changed size (ie user hits maximize on the browser window for example), but it is also triggered if i change the document size, introducing scroll bars. is there any way to tell those two things apart: view port resize, and document resize without writing an elaborate hack?

  • Making two Windows using CreateWindowsEx()

    Hello, I have a windows form that has a simple menu and performs a simple operation, I want to be able to create another windows form with all the functionality of a menu bar, message pump etc.. as a separate thread so I can then share the results of the operation to the second window. I.E. 1) Form A opens Form B opens as a separate thread 2)Form A performs operation 3)Form A passes results via memory to Form B 4)Form B display results I'm confused as to how to go about it, the main app runs fine but i'm not sure how to add a second window if the first one already exists. I think that using CreateWindow will allow me to make another window but again i'm not sure how to access the message pump so I can respond to certain events like WM_CREATE on the second window. I hope it makes sense. Thanks!   • Cocoa NSTextField Drag & Drop Requires Subclass... Really?

    Until today, I've never had occasion to use anything other than an NSWindow itself as an NSDraggingDestination. When using a window as a one-size-fits-all drag destination, the NSWindow will pass those messages on to its delegate, allowing you to handle drops without subclassing NSWindow. The docs say: Although NSDraggingDestination is declared as an informal protocol, the NSWindow and NSView subclasses you create to adopt the protocol need only implement those methods that are pertinent. (The NSWindow and NSView classes provide private implementations for all of the methods.) Either a window object or its delegate may implement these methods; however, the delegate’s implementation takes precedence if there are implementations in both places. Today, I had a window with two NSTextFields on it, and I wanted them to have different drop behaviors, and I did not want to allow drops anywhere else in the window. The way I interpret the docs, it seems that I either have to subclass NSTextField, or make some giant spaghetti-conditional drop handlers on the window's delegate that hit-checks the draggingLocation against each view in order to select the different drop-area behaviors for each field. The centralized NSWindow-delegate-based drop handler approach seems like it would be onerous in any case where you had more than a small handful of drop destination views. Likewise, the subclassing approach seems onerous regardless of the case, because now the drop handling code lives in a view class, so once you accept the drop you've got to come up with some way to marshal the dropped data back to the model. The bindings docs warn you off of trying to drive bindings by setting the UI value programmatically. So now you're stuck working your way back around that too. So my question is: "Really!? Are those the only readily available options? Or am I missing something straightforward here?" Thanks.

  • javascript button click casuing Internet Explorer secuirty exception...

    Hello, I have a application that allows a user to choose some parameters for a powerpoint report, run the report, then allow the user to "save" or "open" the powerpoint file. I got all of that working OK. When you click on "run" report, it pops open a window which generates the report, stores it in session, then closes the window. I have a button on the main page that will export the report. So, now, when the pop up window that generates the report is finished, i use "window.opener" to call a javascript method on the main page, that will do a javascript click of the button. when this button is pressed, Internet Explorer gives me the following message : "To help protect your security, Internet Explorer blocked this site from downloading files to your computer.." Do you guys know of any tricks around this?
