• Cannot Connect To VMWare Guest OS Using NEither RDP Nor

  Hi, I have a PC (Windows XP SP3) with VMWare Workstation 7 installed. The VMWare hosts Windows Server 2003 Enterprise Edition R2. RealVNC (4.1.3) is installed on both OS'es. Both of them use Hamachi2. Host OS (WinXP) also runs ZoneAlarm Firewall. Hamachi network is set as trusted. My goal is to allow RDP and VNC connections to be made to the guest OS (Windows Server 2003). Both options work absolutely fine if I connect from the host OS. However I have problems when other computers from our Hamachi network try to connect the guest OS (Win2K3). 1) RDP connections. RDP window opens, shows black content and after 15-20 seconds displays following error: http://lh6.ggpht.com/_yQhsRRimgKU/TArRrtiteQI/AAAAAAAABZA/e96za-y9wzo/rdp_error.JPG 2) RealVCN connections. Users are able to connect but all they see is a black screen inside VNC window. At the same their input (keystrokes or mouse moves/clicks) are visible when looking at the console window of the Win2K3. I really appreciate any ideas on how to resolve mentioned problems. • What can I do with a home server?

  I have an old 700 Mhz Pentium III at home running Windows 2000 Server, with a home router set up to pass incoming requests to it and a DynDNS account set up so it's easy to find. Right now I'm using it for a number of things: Shared folders + backup inside the home network Shared Printer inside the home network Domain Controller, just because I feel like it and because it's useful to me as practice to keep those "enterprise" administration skills. Web Server FTP remote access for my files. I abandoned this for security reasons, but it's still worth leaving visible. Remote Desktop in to the home network (thinking about adding VPN service) SVN repository MySQL - Will be moving to SQL Server 2008 Standard soon. After I upgrade my wife's laptop from home to pro later this year it will also become a domain controller It's the only place I still have access to Internet Explorer 6 any more without setting up a new virtual machine, so I use it for testing code with that browser. The question is: What else could I be doing with this machine? Update Additional ideas based on the suggestions: Media Server/DVR Build server PBX SSH Proxy Server Continuous Integration Server Personal OpenID Provider Update2 Just a note that this server was recently upgraded to an Atom330 with 2 GB ram and bigger hard drive. For all that's slow for a "modern" cpu, it should still be much faster than the old Pentium III and the expected power savings should make the upgrade essentially free over the course of the next year or two. Also, it's now running Windows Server 2008.

• Hung Java JVM failing to respond to kill -3

  I have a Java VM that is hanging "randomly". I quote the randomly bit, because there is obviously a reason that the VM is hanging, but the hang does not occur periodically. We have the same software running in different customer environments and in those environments the JVM is not hanging. In the process of attempting to troubleshoot the hang the process exists with zero CPU utilization. I then attempt to execute kill -3 and the kill command hangs. No JVM Thread Dump is produced. I have spent time instrumenting the code to periodically log the thread stack traces hoping to catch the JVM in a state that would indicate where the issue lies, but so far this attempt has not born much fruit. Unfortunately I have not been able to reproduce this issue in my lab environment so I am limited by what can be done at the Customer site. The OS's in question are Red Hat Enterprise 5.4 and SUSE 10 running java version 1.6.0_05-b13 Has anyone had this problem? Any ideas on why kill -3 is failing to produce a Java Thread Dump? Thanks!

• Interaction between two Clouds

  I have setup the Cloud-A with 1 - [CLC+CC] and 2 - [NC] computers. I have another Cloud-B with same configuration. [using the Ubuntu Enterprise Cloud] Both of them working fine individually, in the same LAN. Now if I want to add the NC of Cloud-A to CC of Cloud-B, [in case the resources of Cloud-B are exhausted] how can I make it possible ? I guess this calls for the interoperability stuff... Could you please explain what happens exactly when we ask for instance, the direct interaction happens between the client and NC or it goes through the CLC and CC ? What I want to say is, say there are multiple cloud providers. A user is subscribed to any one of them, say Cloud-A for IaaS. As the requirements are dynamic, all the resources of Cloud-A may get exhausted. There may be another Cloud-B which can provide the services but that Cloud-A can't ask the client to go for Cloud-B. So if it is possible to have some co-ordination between this two providers to share resources mutually, making client fully unaware of whats going on in the background....? Please reply.. • How can I install git on RHEL 6?

  I'm trying to install Git on a RHEL6 development server, I have experience with Ubuntu but this is my first time working with RHEL (I'm a developer trying to fill in for a recently departed Linux Sysadmin). I've set up two additional repos (EPEL and IUS) for other packages needed for a Magento install. Output of yum repolist: [root@box]# yum repolist Loaded plugins: product-id, security, subscription-manager Updating certificate-based repositories. repo id repo name status epel Extra Packages for Enterprise Linux 6 - x86_64 7,841 ius IUS for RHEL 6Server - x86_64 135 Most of what I've read indicates a simple 'yum install git' should work with EPEL enabled, but I get the dreaded [root@box]# yum install git Loaded plugins: product-id, security, subscription-manager Updating certificate-based repositories. Setting up Install Process No package git available. Error: Nothing to do Same goes for git-daemon, etc. I've tracked down a number of git RPMs such as this one at repoforge but they require a train of dependencies that seems to never end. I've also toyed with compiling it manually but the rabbit hole to get make working seems to go even deeper. I'm convinced there's a simple oversight somewhere keeping me from being able to install from the EPEL repo, but I'm a rookie at all this. Thanks in advance for help/pointers/additional resources.

• Docking Station Sound Doesn't Work on Dell D830 with Windows 7

  EDIT: I can only mark one answer as the correct one but the actual solution was a combination of two comments (updating the BIOS to A15 AND installing the Sigmatel audio drivers). I have a Dell Latitude D830 laptop that is running Windows 7 Enterprise x64. I connect to a docking station during the day with multiple monitors, a keyboard and a mouse. Everything runs with no problems including most of the docking station ports (usb, monitors, etc.) However, the sound port from the docking station does not work since the upgrade to Windows-7. Even with the laptop plugged in, the sound always comes out of the laptop, not the headphones plugged into the docking station. Here's what I've tried: I've seen other issues like via Google this that seem to be mostly unanswered. I found one or two that referenced using the Vista x64 drivers, especially the Nvidia drivers. I do not have an Nvidia chipset but I've reinstalled the sound drivers and that has not helped. I don't have a support contract and considering the cost is usually high to call Dell, that's not an option. Dell's forums are pretty much a wasteland and I've found no help there. Since this is a docking station I thought I might need to try the SATA or Intel chipset drivers from the dell site instead, however I'm not really sure and I need to work on this laptop in the meantime. I can't really afford the downtime to experiment with random drivers all day in case they turn out to be incompatible (Dell still hasn't added Windows 7 to their support site as far as I can tell). Does anyone have any other ideas? Has anyone had this issue and solved it? If so, how? Thanks in advance for your help.

• Installing Windows 7 from a USB Hard Drive.

  I have a Western Digital Passport External Hard Drive (320GB) that I want to partition to keep the data on, but use some of the free space to install Windows 7 onto my desktop computer. Microsoft has given me the Windows 7 Enterprise Edition ISO to download. I would like to take the External HD and partition it so I can fit the ISO image onto it. How would I go about doing this? Trying to use GParted to partition the external hard drive has caused a chicken or the egg problem. GParted can't see the drive unless it's mounted, and when it is mounted it will not allow me to do anything to the partition. When it's not mounted, GParted can't see the drive at all and as such can't do anything to the drive. Once the drive is correctly partition, how do I go about moving the ISO image Microsoft gave me to my USB External Hard Drive? Are there any special steps that I need to take? I am using Ubuntu 11.04 & GParted 0.7.0, on my Chromebook to do this. Any support would be appreciated.

• ERROR: Not enough space?

  Now this is a very unspecific question. I'm trying to figure out what this message would mean. Here is the story behind it: I'm installing Oracle enterprise manager cloud control (12c r3) on Solaris 10 (5/09). Installer opens up, i enter all needed information and at the last step click Install. It immediately crashes with only "ERROR: Not enough space" written in log and console and nothing else. Now, this could be java error or Solaris error? I'm thinking it's happening either when it starts to copy files or when it tries to launch a process that would do that. What space is it referring to? disk (have ehough), swap (also), memory (yep)... Any ideas are helpful. • windows 7 monitor instantly resumes from power off

  It seems that some service or program is preventing my monitor from going into power save mode but I cannot find a way to dig down the cause. Does anybody know a way to find out which event may be causing the problem? Background information: If I leave/lock my computer I want to immediately power off the monitor. Stupid windows has no program for this so I use a third party utility. I use Display.exe from Noel Danjou since 2005 and have had no problem with it on XP, my Notebook with w7 x64 pro and at the office with w7 x64 enterprise. With my new home pc with w7 x64 pro the monitor goes off but instantly comes back on after a second. So I tested using a power plan with the shortest timeout of 1 minute but with that the display never goes off at all. (Setting a power plan timeout is no useful option because then I cannot read a document or watch a movie without the monitor going off) I could try trial and error methods but this is cumbersome and not what I regard as a professional solution. So I would prefer a way to analyze the windows events to find out the reason for the display staying active. Add On: In the meantime I tried safe mode and also exited from all tray programs but the problem is still there. I also checked the BIOS for special power settings but still no solution (P.S. Mobo is H87-G41 PC Mate with latest BIOS rev.)

• Pushing Windows Store apps silently

  As part of a requirement I have been issued, I seek the ability to push apps from the Windows Store (.appx) to remote users. The framework surrounding the data transmission is sorted; What I need to know is if there is a script that can be sent out along with a URI or the package proper to facilitate installation on the user-side of the Windows Store app. I am well aware that numerous guides exist from Microsoft on pushing out Line-of-Business (LOB) (AKA Enterprise) applications -- that is, apps that have been developed in-house and are not for the consumption of the Windows store. This is inappropriate for my requirement, however; the customer wants their clients to receive apps that appear currently on the Windows Store, and for them to be installed in a silent manner. I've seen this guide; http://blogs.technet.com/b/keithmayer/archive/2013/02/25/step-by-step-deploying-windows-8-apps-with-system-center-2012-service-pack-1.aspx, which details doing exactly this, but it is only applicable to machines that are administered by a system running Windows Server 2012 R2 with the 'System Center 2012' bundle installed. The systems I target are considerably more decentralised than this, making this guide inappropriate. I have a hunch that Microsoft have deliberately designed the Windows Store to be this way, but I figured I ought to ask around before I resign myself to the requirement. Much obliged

• Office Compatibility Pack and File Permissions

  MS isn't my thing, so I hope somebody can give me a pointer. We have a Windows domain, with a Server-2003-SP1-Enterprise file server. One of the specific files is a MS Excel 2007 (XLSX) file created by user LK. In the "Security" preferences setting, about a half-dozen users (including me) have access to this file. LK is the owner and has "full control", while the rest of us have "Read" , "Read & Execute", and "Write" permission. LK is also the owner of the directory that this file resides in. I don't know if that's relevant. So far so good. My desktop machine has Windows XP SP3 , and Excel 2003 SP3 , and the "Office Compatibility Pack" which lets me read and write the new XLSX files. However, whenever I write the file, the permissions are changed. The newly-written file only has permissions for LK and me, and both are "Full control" So in short, what am I doing wrong, and how should I set this up to do it right, keeping the permissions on the file that were there when I started?

• How do I cancel windows server 2003 repair install?

  System: Windows 2003 Server Enterprise Scenario: NTDS db is corrupt and all attempts to fix with esentutl fail. Ran chkdsk which seemed to repair disk error and give access to the ntds.dit file but still esentutl fails. (Attached the drive to a different server to run the esentutl) Error: Access to source database '[path to copy of]/ntds.dit' failed with Jet error -1022. Operation terminated with error -1022 (JET_errDiskIO, Disk IO error) after 0.170 seconds. This error occurs on any disk I cpoy the files to including original location in C:\WINDOWS\NTDS\ Now enter the "Stupid!" and "what was I thinking!?" part (must be the late hour...) Stupid: No updated backup - after using a backup I get a network password error in the lsass error. what was I thinking!?: Started the install repair from the original CD but the install fails since the AD fails to start. Now I cant boot into any mode (safe mode, AD restore etc) nor complete the repair install. I would really like to avoid a fresh install since I have the Exchange server on this DC and would rather migrate to a new server than have to start from scratch. Thanks!

• Troubles Installing Windows 7 via USB. Flat install?

  Hi friends, I've been struggling with this for a while. Windows 7 64-bit Enterprise edition just will not install on my Shuttle K45 system via a USB key. It hangs out during the install while copying files or while creating the partitions. The system is pretty standard and low-tech: IDE hard drives, no CD, 2G RAM. I am not sure what of the problem. Other than the Shuttle, I have a Apple MacBook Pro. On the MPB, I am running OS X, and Mint Linux and Window XP over Parallels. I have an ISO of Win7 that works (I installed it as a Parallels VM to make sure). I have used UltraISO and MS Windows 7 USB/DVD Download Tool to write it to the 8G USB key. Both seem to copy all the files correctly (with UltraISO, I asked it to verify). It boots via USB and the install looks just fine. Until it hangs, most of the time with a copying error of 0x80070241. So now I am trying to figure out if there are other ways I can install Windows 7 on this Shuttle system that has no CD drive. I've heard about a flat installation, however those all seem to be doing something from within Windows. I do have access to a command prompt from the Windows 7 install. Does anyone know if/how I can prep the Shuttle hard drive with Windows 7 installation and have Windows 7 install from the hard disk. I do not have an external enclosure for the IDE HD and I do not have any other system I can hook up to the hard drives. I do have an external Maxtor OneTouch drive available.

• dell latitude XT touch screen issue

  yesterday I installed windows 7 ultimate after I had the enterprise version on this machine for a few months. the installation went smoothly and everything worked fine except for the finger detection of the screen(only the pen worked) and the bottom screen buttons for rotating and so. so I started to install all the missing drivers dell recommends for this model on their site, but once I tried to install N-Trig degitizer driver the installation said it was unsuccessful and since then the touch stopped working completely! I tried system restore but it didn't help so I went on and formatted the harddisk completely once again and installed windows but that didn't work either. I tried to install the N-Trig's driver but it was alarting for a fatal error and said that no device was detected. same story with N-Trig rollback. so I checked the device manager and saw an "unknown device" with VID and PID values set as 0000. I figured the N-Trig driver might have messed with the device firmware or something and now it doesnt know it's ID and munufactor... Is there anything that can be done? like forcing the N-Trig driver to install on this device or something? please help!

• Dead Linux server - need help and options

  All, I have a Dell PE 1950 w/ 2 SATA drives in a software RAID1. OS is CentOS 5.5 (2.6.18.x). Starting this afternoon we received HW errors (something on the bus is bad, E171F) and the machine became unresponsive. We hard booted and it came back up for about 5 hours but then it happened again. I'm trying to figure out our options. Unfortunately we do not have similar hardware but I have a small desktop that I can use. I was contemplating putting one of the drives into the desktop and then starting it up. My goal was to then P2V it using Vmware converter but apparently the free v5.x doesn't support hot cloning/converting on a RAID volume, only the Enterprise 4.x version of Converter does. My questions are: 1.) Is putting a single drive out of a RAID1 pair into another piece of HW is safe? Based on my research and understanding it appears to be but would like confirmation. 2.) Is there any work around to the Vmware Converter not supporting RAID volumes during a hot clone/convert session? 3.) Are there other options I'm overlooking?   I recently purchased a pair of 1TB Western Digital WD1002FBYS RE3 drives for use in an external RAID enclosure. I have found that they tend to drop out of the array after a while. Thinking it was the enclosure I tried them on another one but found the same issue. So a bit of googling and I found http://www.tomshardware.com/forum/251076-32-raid-issues-western-digital-hard-disk which suggests that: "WD's "RE" (RAID Edition) HDDs support Time-Limited Error Recovery ("TLER" ): http://www.wdc.com/en/products/productcatalog.asp?language=en As a non-TLER HDD fills up with data, the error detection firmware might take too long, and the RAID controller may drop that HDD from a RAID array." So now I wonder what SATA drives have firmware which is compatible with RAID arrays (esp. RAID 1, 5, but not 0)? I have not been able to come up with the magic set of keywords to ellicit the answer from Google. However, various sites suggest that Seagate & Hitachi are in general OK. Does anyone have any generic (or even specific) guidance on how to work out if a drive's firmware may harbour code that is potentially an issue in a RAID0 setting other than stating that it must be 'enterprise' ready?

  Hi, I'm having pretty similar problems as described in case 139099, but the fix there doesn't seem to work for me. Here's the details: Server: Win2003Srv R2 SP2 (stadalone, not a member of a domain). IIS6, TCP/443 (https). Anonymous access disabled. Integrated Windows authentication enabled. Local useraccouts Each useraccount has own virtual folder with change access and read access to site root. The 'adsutil NTAuthenticationProviders "NTLM"' -thing set to site root and useraccount's virtual folder. Client: Win7 Enterprise Member of a AD-Domain IE8 Allows three login attepts then fails. The Security Event log shows two events, first is Fauilure Audit (680), The second event is Fauilure Audit (529) with these details: Logon Failure: Reason: Unknown user name or bad password User Name: [username] Domain: [webservername] Logon Type: 3 Logon Process: NtLmSsp Authentication Package: NTLM Workstation Name: [MyWorkstation] Caller User Name: - Caller Domain: - Caller Logon ID: - Caller Process ID: - Transited Services: - Source Network Address: [999.999.999.999] Source Port: 20089 Any ideas appreciated.

  Here are my architecture : For the protected site 4 Host VSphere Enterprise Plus, each one with 2 HBAs FC connected to the switch fabric, connected to an EMC CX4-120 1 VCenter 1 SRM For the recovery site 2 Hosts Vsphere 4 1 Vcenter 1 SRM 1 CX-4-120 The CX4-120 is connected to the second CX4-120 with ISCSI and the MirrorView / Asynchronous. I synchronise for the time 6 Lun on a FC DAE, 2 on a S-ATA DAE I have allocated 30% of the amount synchronised LUN for the SNAPSHOT us, but I have allocated them only on my S-ATA II DAE. It does not make a problem, my snapshot are correctly active. All the installation is new (hardware and software), installed in January with the last files available in download. I have a strange problem, and it's random, sometimes when I run a test on my RP, some VMs have this error : Error: A specified parameter was not correct. I don't know where to look. Any help is appreciated... PS : I have checked on all the VMs, no Floppy disk or CD attached. PS2 : There is severals VMs with RDM and OCFS2 filesystems on it.

• How do you apply proxy settings per computer instead of per user?

  So far, I've used a user group policy object utilizing Internet Explorer maintenance to set a proxy for the user in IE. We have now deployed the Enterprise Client (EC) starter group policy to our domain and this policy affects this behavior. The EC group policy uses the policy Make proxy settings per-machine (rather than per-user). This policy describes itself as: This policy is intended to ensure that proxy settings apply uniformly to the same computer and do not vary from user to user. Great! This seems to be an improvement over my previous setup. If you enable this policy, users cannot set user-specific proxy settings. They must use the zones created for all users of the computer. What zones and where do I configure the proxy settings for them? I assumed the policy would simply take the user settings and apply them, but that's not what's happening. Now no proxy server is set at all. So my previous settings obviously no longer have any effect. So far, I've only come up with solutions that involved direct manipulation of the Windows registry. Which is fine, I guess, but the way the proxy is configured for users makes it appear as if there could be a higher level approach.

• Rescue system running TFS that BSODs, into vmware esxi

  Hi, After moving to new facilities, one of our old Dell servers running Windows Server 2003 R2 on PowerEdge 2650 HW BSODs with 0x8e. The server runs Team Foundation Server, so we have a few guys dependent on it. No one here knows TFS, so we have no idea how difficult it would be to setup from scratch. We have the MSSQL database(s) backed up, recent and fresh copy. Tried removing/refitting memory modules, but with no success. The system boots into safe mode but hangs occasionally. I booted a linux livecd and did a dd of both c: and d:, so I have all the data in compressed images on a vmware machine. For the guest, I created a 38G (actually it became 40GB) partition to act as C:, and booted a live cd. I then uncompressed the compressed disk image of c: and dd'd it to the new c: using 'gunzip -dc c.img.gz | dd of=/dev/sda1 bs=1M'. The operation ran for about 1000 seconds, and completed successfully. I assumed it would at least try to boot windows (but most likely BSOD due to not having correct drivers), but the Vmware ESXi guest does not seem to recognize it as a bootable disk. We don't have the vmware enterprise license, so the vmware converter cold cloning is not an option. Did I do something wrong in my dd's etc with the ISOs, or why would it not (try to) boot? Am I wasting my time? What other approach is there? Will continue to try to remove services and drivers to make the physical machine at least work reasonably well in safe mode. What do you suggest? 1. Continue to get the dd'd images to the virtual disk and get it to boot. 2. Install a new windows server, get team foundation server and restore from backup. 3. Focus on the old problematic hardware Any help appreciated

• User profile service fails

  I have Windows 7 and 3 drives on my HDD. The second drive is D:\, and there are some files in that. I decided to install 8.1 Enterprise so I installed it in dual boot manner beside 7 and in D:\ drive which as I said was not empty and when installing 8.1, I didn't format the D:. I installed 8.1 successfully in D:\ and it was working fine. One time which I came up with 7, I thought I should arrange the 8.1 folders in D: to be separated from the other non-8.1 folders, so I created a new folder named it "Windows 8.1" and cut all 8.1 folders and pasted them into that new folder. Now my D: drive was arranged. When I restart the PC, I selected the 8.1 to start with, but it didn't come up like before and instead, it shows now a blue screen (not the blue screen of death!) and the time is shown in left-down corner of it. When I click the screen this message appears: The User Profile Service service Failed the sign-in. User Profile can not be loaded. I know two things: 1- The problem is to do with that cutting and pasting the 8.1 folders to be arranged. And 2- If I reinstall the 8.1, the problem will be solved (but if I don't do that cutting and pasting again!) Is there any simpler way to solve the issue and have the two OSs with each other?

• Vmware player change dhcp server settings

  I have a Windows Server 2003 running from a Vmware player on Win 7 box. The idea is to test Windows Deployment service in the virtual network. Is it possible to configure the vmware dhcp server with WDS related stuff(option 66, 67)? I found a few references where people were using the vnetlib.exe to start, stop the dhcp serverchange the subnet mask etc - but there's no info on how to get set the dhcp server options. DHCP config from the virtual network editor I do have the Workstation, without the license for it. In the Virtual network Editor, the DHCP settings for the network I'm using, only allows me to set the subnetmask, IP ranges and stuff like that. But not the dhcp options. DHCP server on the WDS server Authorizing the DHCP server in the guest WDS server fails. The VMware player can run its own dhcp server fro the virtual network with out any authorization from the Active directory - can I do the same, with Win dhcp server in the guest Win Server? ~~~~~ Can I authorize W2K8 DHCP server for private network, even when prohibited in enterprise network? says we have to run a third party dhcp server... :/.
