• How do you implement caching in Linq to SQL?

  We've just started using LINQ to SQL at work for our DAL & we haven't really come up with a standard for out caching model. Previously we had being using a base 'DAL' class that implemented a cache manager property that all our DAL classes inherited from, but now we don't have that. I'm wondering if anyone has come up with a 'standard' approach to caching LINQ to SQL results? We're working in a web environment (IIS) if that makes a difference. I know this may well end up being a subjective question, but I still think the info would be valuable. EDIT: To clarify, I'm not talking about caching an individual result, I'm after more of an architecture solution, as in how do you set up caching so that all your link methods use the same caching architecture.

• How to override the behavior of Spring @Autowired

  Hi a little background: I am Using Spring 2.5, and specifically spring IOC and annotations. I am using @Autowired in my code (the Autowiring is done by type) and use @Component for exposing Classes to the Automatic wiring. The situation described bellow arose while i tried to test my code. now to the problem: Note: i use a different Spring Context for the Test environment. I have a class FOO which is @Autowired but in the test context i want to use a different class of the same type MockFoo (extends FOO) The Spring Setup of course fails do so automatically due to multiple options for the Dependency Injection of the FOO class (both FOO and MockFOO comply to the Type check) I am looking for a way to inject the test bean instead of the original bean. I expected Spring to allow using the Context configurion file to override a bean injection or to order Spring not to autowire a specific bean BUT All these option seem to exists only for the beans which were originally defined in the Spring Context Configuration file

• jQuery Resizable() UI Problem

  In general, resizable() works fine. Here is where I am getting into an issue. I have a div that contains some resizable items that work fine (resizable() applied to them at some point). user can save items for later view (the innerHTML of the div gets saved into a JavaScript array, then div gets cleared so they can do something else) When items get placed back onto div (from array) -- I do a $('#divname').append(arrayname[i]); -- items are no longer resizable (although visually they have the resizable classes/handle on them) Here is what I have tried so far (none of which have worked): After append() line, I re-initialize the resizable -- $('#items').resizable(); After append() line, remove then re-add resizable -- $('#items').resizable('destroy').resizable(); Any help is appreciated - thanks.

• Variable length Blob in hibernate?

  I have a byte[] member in one of my persistable classes. Normally, I'd just annotate it with @Lob and @Column(name="foo", size=). In this particular case, however, the length of the byte[] can vary a lot (from ~10KB all the way up to ~100MB). If I annotate the column with a size of 128MB, I feel like I'll be wasting a lot of space for the small and mid-sized objects. Is there a variable length blob type I can use? Will hibernate take care of all of this for me behind the scenes without wasting space? What's the best way to go about this? Thanks!

• Is removing unused functionality a bad thing?

  Is it possible for YAGNI to apply in the past tense? You created some functionality, it was used a little bit a while ago, but you aren't using it any more, and you don't want to maintain it, so you'd rather delete it. Is getting rid of unused or rarely-used functionality neccessarily a bad thing? Background: I use source control, so if I need the functionality again, I can get it. I'm the only user of my software (I'm a bioinformatician analyzing a data set). One scenario where I came across this was that I was using inheritance, with a parent class, and two child classes. One was handling files generated by 454 sequencing (next-generation sequencing), and the other was handling files generated by Sanger sequencing (previous-generation sequencing). I was actively maintaining the latter, but not the former. Maybe my mistake was using inheritance rather than composition, but that's a slightly different story.

  Hi, In JavaLand, I'm used to creating projects that contain both production and test code. I like this practice because it simplifies testing of internal code without artificially exposing the internals in a project's published API. So far, in my experiences with C# / Visual Studio / ReSharper / NUnit, I've created separate projects (i.e., separate DLLs) for production and test code. Is this the idiom, or am I off base?   Suppose that I am implementing a remote proxy in Java to an object that is likely to reside on a remote server but may reside locally. There's my real object on the remote server, there's the local implementation (the proxy itself), and there's the interface I provide to my program which hides the details of where the object actually is. The local representation may contact a local or a remote implementation of the object. What is the standard terminology in Java for these things? What should I name my interfaces/classes? I've seen the terms Subjects, Images, and Implementations thrown around (probably from the GOF days), but I wonder what is acceptable way to do the naming for a framework written in Java.

Microsoft says, "In general, we recommend that you implement extension methods sparingly and only when you have to." And yet extension methods form the foundation of Linq; in fact, Linq was the reason extension methods were created. Are there specific design criteria where using extension methods are perferred over inheritance or composition? Under what criteria are they discouraged?

  i'm using Spring Data for MongoDB and got the following classes class A { List<B> b; } class B { Date startDate; Date endDate; } when i save an object of A it gets persisted like { "_id" : "DQDVDE000VFP8E39", "b" : [ { "startDate" : ISODate("2009-10-05T22:00:00Z"), "endDate" : ISODate("2009-10-29T23:00:00Z") }, { "startDate" : ISODate("2009-11-01T23:00:00Z"), "endDate" : ISODate("2009-12-30T23:00:00Z") } ] } Now i want to query the db for documents matching entries in b where a given date is between startDate and endDate. Query query = new Query(Criteria.where("a").elemMatch( Criteria.where("startDate").gte(date) .and("endDate").lte(date) ); Which results in the following mongo query: { "margins": { "$elemMatch": { "startDate" : { "$gte" : { "$date" : "2009-11-03T23:00:00.000Z"}}, "endDate" : { "$lte" : { "$date" : "2009-11-03T23:00:00.000Z"}} } } } but returns no resulting documents.   Hi all, I implemented the delegate-callback pattern between two classes without retaining the delegate. But in some cases, the delegate is dealloced. (My case is that I have a ViewController is the delegate object, and when the user press back button to pop that ViewController out of the NavigationController stack) Then the callback method get BAD_EXE: if (self.delegate != nil && [self.delegate respondsToSelector:selector]) { [self.delegate performSelector:selector withObject:self withObject:returnObject]; } I know the delegate-callback pattern is implemented in a lot of application. What is your solution for this?

• Ordering the calling of asynchronous methods in c#

  Hi, Say I have 4 classes ControllerClass MethodClass1 MethodClass2 MethodClass3 and each MethodClass has an asynchronous method DoStuff() and each has a CompletedEvent. The ControllerClass is responsible for invoking the 3 asynchronous methods on the 3 MethodClasses in a particular order. So ControllerClass invokes MethodClass1.DoStuff() and subscribes to MethodClass1.CompletedEvent. When that event is fired, ControllerClass invokes MethodClass2.DoStuff() and subscribes to MethodClass2.CompletedEvent. When that event is fired, the ControllerClass invokes MethodClass3.DoStuff() Is there a best practice for a situation like this? Is this bad design? I believe it is because I am finding it hard to unit test (a sure sign) It is not easy to change the order I have an uneasy, code-smell feeling about it What are the alternatives in a situation like this?

  We have this XML: <Summary> <ValueA>xxx</ValueA> <ValueB/> </Summary> <ValueB/> will never have any attributes or inner elements. It's a boolean type element - it exists (true) or it doesn't (false). JAXB generated a Summary class with a String valueA member, which is good. But for ValueB, JAXB generated a ValueB inner class and a corresponding member: @XmlElement(name = "ValueB") protected Summary.ValueB valueB; But what I'd like is a boolean member and no inner class: @XmlElement(name = "ValueB") protected boolean valueB; How can you do this? I'm not looking to regenerate the classes, I'd like to just make the code change manually.

  Hello! I have an interface that, among other things, implements a "public IEnumerator GetEnumerator()" method, so I can use the interface in a foreach statement. I implement this interface in several classes and in one of them, I want to return an empty IEnumerator. Right now I do this the following way: public IEnumerator GetEnumerator() { ArrayList arr = new ArrayList(); return arr.GetEnumerator(); } However I consider this an ugly hack, and I can't help but think that there is a better way of returning an empty IEnumerator. Is there?

• Entity Framework associations killing performance

  Here is the performance test i am looking at. I have 8 different entities that are table per type. Some of the entities contain over 100 thousand rows. This particular application does several recursive calculations on the client so I think it may be best to preload the data instead of lazy loading. If there are no associations I can load the entire database in about 3 seconds. As I add associations in any way the performance starts to drastically decline. I am loading all the data the same way (just calling toList() on the entity attached to the context). I ran the test with edmx generated classes and self tracking entities and had similar results. I am sure if I were to try and deal with the associations myself, similar to how I would in a dataset, the performance problem would go away. On the other hand I am pretty sure this is not how the entity framework was intended to being used. Any thoughts or ideas?

  I want to create classes Car, Vehicle, and Airplane with the following properties: Car and Airplane are both subclasses of Vehicle. Car and Airplane both have an initWithString method. The acceptable input strings for Car's and Airplane's initWithString methods do not overlap. Vehicle is "almost abstract", in the sense that any initialized instance should be either a Car or an Airplane. It is possible to pass a string into Vehicle and get back an instance of Car, an instance of Airplane, or nil, depending on the input string. Any particular design pattern I should prefer? In particular for Vehicle's initWithString and/or newVehicleWithString methods.

And this is where I'm stuck. I haven't yet found an workaround for this in MVVM adoptation for SL (PRISM is so complex for me yet). Different simple HelloWorldMVVM apps don't deal with at all. • String Utility Library for Code Generation

  CodeSmith has a nice StringUtils class that can be used to change database object names to singular, plural, camel case, pascal case, etc... Very useful for creating data access layers in their code generation tool. I'm trying to port some CodeSmith templates to the T4 template files used by Visual Studio, and I'm trying to find a similar library to do these things. There must be one somewhere in T4, since that's what is used to produce the LINQ to SQL classes, and it does a nice job of pluralization / singularization. Does anyone know where this library exists, or if a free library with similar functionality exists somewhere? Thanks!

• Fluent NHibernate MappingException : could not instantiate id generator

  I'm pottering around with Fluent NHibernate to try and get a simple app up and running. I'm running through this Fluent NHibernate Tutorial. Everything seems to be going fine and I've created the required classes etc. and it all builds, but when I run the test, I get an exception. Someone in the comments section of the tutorial has the same problem, but I can't find any good information on what's causing it. Any help appreciated. It's probably something trivial. Exception details: FluentNHTest.Tests.Mappings.CustomerMappingTests.ValidateMappings: FluentNHibernate.Cfg.FluentConfigurationException : An invalid or incomplete configuration was used while creating a SessionFactory.
