• 1000 HZ linux kernel necessary if I have tickless and high resolution timer?

  I am trying to improve performance on my server. I have a few processes that need low jitter (less than 10ms variance). I have a load average of 4 maximum on an i7-920 (4 physical cores, 8 with HT). There are about 10 processes ranging from 40% to 90% of a core user mode. System usage is 3% total. Total CPU usage is 80% max. Will setting the kernel from 100hz to 1000hz improve the jitter if tickless and high resolution timers are already set? This page seems to indicate it still does something. https://lkml.org/lkml/2009/4/28/401 How about changing from voluntary (PREEMPT_VOLUNTARY) to preemptible (PREEMPT)?

• Can't use sudo on ubuntu

  After update and reboot I get 'user is not in the sudoers file. This incident will be reported.' when trying to call sudo. The problem is that I don't have a GRUB with revovery option. I try to boot from live cd but I'm not able to access the system partition, only the partition with grub. Can I somehow enable the recovery mode in GRUB? Or boot throw the live CD from first hard drive with some option for that?

  I want my computer to start uTorrent at 4 o'clock in the morning, when I'm asleep. But the computer is a bit noisy so I put it to sleep mode every time I go to bed. I've tried creating a task in Task Scheduler with this parameters: Run whether user is logged in or not Daily At 4:00 every day Start a program "C:\Program Files\uTorrent\uTorrent.exe" Wake the computer to run this task I've tried to change the time to run to make sure the computer wakes up and runs uTorrent. But it doesn't. What am I doing wrong? Maybe I've lost something?

Note that I basically need to share a set of directories containing large binary files that are accessed in random R/W mode.   Hi, I have a fit-PC server with Debian GNU/Linux (Lenny). I would like to use it as a wifi access point since my Linksys WRT54GS has become unstable. I have a USB Ralink wifi NIC. When I insert the card to USB I can see this with lsusb: Bus 001 Device 002: ID 148f:2573 Ralink Technology, Corp. RT2501/RT2573 Wireless Adapter I have tried following various HOWTOs on using wifi card as AP in Linux, however, it seems that the card cannot go into monitor mode. I believe this is because I must use a newer driver or upload non-free firmware or something like that. I have tried installed wicd, but it does not help. I bought this wifi adapter because I was told that it is one of the most common used Linux supported wifi cards that can be used as access point and a lot of other stuff. So my question is: How do I set up this USB wifi card as wireless access point in Debian Lenny?

• Internal LTO tape drive becomes hot

  We use an internal LTO3 tape drive (HP Ultrium 920) in a PC (no particular server hardware) running Linux. The tape drive becomes quite hot - I don't have the exact temperature, but you may touch it for a second or two, then it hurts ;-) This happens when the tape has nothing to do (during reading/writing, it might become even hotter, I haven't checked that). Besides that, the system is working fine. Now I'm wondering Why does the tape becomes so hot? Is this something I need to care about? Is there something like a 'standby' mode for the tape? (I think it should not consume that much energy when it is not used)

• Windows XP Pro SP3 stop error code 0x000000F4

  I have a system running Windows XP Pro SP3. My wife is the primary user of this system, and the last several days in a row, when she tries to log in to the system it gives her a BSOD with the stop error code 0x000000F4. The rest of the error codes change every time she tries to log on, but that one seems to stay constant. The error it gives me is: A process or thread crucial to system operation has unexpectedly exited or been terminated. The machine will also get stuck in a boot loop, where it keeps giving me the screen saying that windows did not start successfully, and to choose how to start windows. I have tried Safe Mode, Last known Good Config, and Normally, and all have resulted in either a return to the boot loop, or BSOD. What might this mean? How can I fix it, without doing a clean install?

• Input not supported message when monitor is powered off then back on

  I've been getting a message on my monitor where "Input not supported" is floating around. This only happens when I manually turn the monitor off and then later turn it back on. Leaving the monitor on and allowing it to go to the screen saver doesn't seem to cause the issue (but I prefer to turn the monitor off if I'm going to be away from the computer for any length of time). Any ideas what might cause this, only when the monitor is turned off manually? • SolidWorks ratio issue with printing in landscape

  We run SolidWorks 2010 on XP. On one workstation when printing to the plotter in a 1:1 ratio in landscape mode it's off by small increments. He needs to adjust manually from 1:1 to 1:1.009 (for example) in order to correctly print 1:1. The increments by which it's off varies from drawing to drawing. None of the other workstations have this issue. All five of the workstations have the same settings and all print to one networked plotter. Three out of five have the same graphics card. Scale to fit is not checked. I read this site often, but this is the first time I've posted. I'm hoping someone here has run across this before. Thanks.

• DokuWiki Segmentation Fault On Radius Auth

  I'm running x64 Ubuntu 12.04. I did a simple apt-get install dokuwiki to install DokuWiki. And I'm trying to follow the directions located here: http://www.dokuwiki.org/auth:radius to get Radius authentication working. Things seemed to install OK. Under Configuration Manager I selected Authentication backend to be "Radius" and filled in the Radius details at the bottom. Now, however, whenever I try to log into the Wiki, my browser gives me the following error: No data received I checked /var/log/apache2/error.log and see this: [Tue Jul 10 22:22:14 2012] [notice] child pid 5270 exit signal Segmentation fault (11) I'm fairly sure the Radius server is setup correctly as it correctly authenticates with my squid proxy and other stuff on the network. But this is about the extent of my Linux troubleshooting skills. Can anyone suggest steps for me to follow to help track down what's causing apache2 to segfault short of attaching with gdb and issuing a set follow-fork-mode? • My saved drafts become unread email in Windows Live Mail and Gmail IMAP

  I have setup windows live mail with my gmail account in IMAP mode. When I draft an email and save it. It saves in the drafts automatically. Within a minute, my WLM sound alerts new mail and shows mail icon in the system tray. However, this is for the draft I have saved which appears unread. To make the mail notification icon go away in the system tray, I go off and mark the draft as read. This repetition is tedious and distracting. How can I avoid this annoyance? thanks

• samba shares dissapear everynight

  I have ubuntu 8.04lts and recently a weird problem has been cropping up. every night something happens and in the morning my coworkers cant see the shares. If i try to remote into the machine via ssh i don't get a prompt . when i rebooted the machine i would get a "video cannot be displayed in this mode" screen and no other activity on the box. I booted from grub into recovery and tried doing a package repair (keeping my smb.conf) and that didn't seem to do anything after a few other reboots I was able to get it to come up (im not sure what i did) yesterday it did teh same thing i booted to recovery then did a repair xserver and it came right up so i thought that resovled the issue but then today same thing anyone have any idea on what i can look for (im very new to linux in general) worst case sennerio can i just reinstall ubuntu over again with out blowing out the data?

  I'm working on a remote server installation entirely through ILO. Due to the software application and environment, my access is restricted to a Windows server that I must access through RDP. Going from that system to the target server is accomplished via HP ILO3. I'm trying to run a CentOS installation in an environment where I can't use a kickstart. I'm doing this via text mode, but the keystrokes are repeating randomly and it's difficult to select the proper installation options. I'm doing this using Microsoft's native RDP client (on Mac and Windows). I've also noticed this before when running installations or doing remote work in nested sessions. Is there a nice fix for this, or it it simply a function of the protocol?

  Hi, I'm using an app called django-chronograph. It has a code of line which works in my dev environment and does not work in production: p = subprocess.Popen(['python', get_manage_py(), 'run_job', str(self.pk)]) This line crashes in production with: unknown command run_job Whereas when I run directly from command line: manage.py run_job It works fine. Interestingly it worked once when we exchanged 'python' with 'usr/bin/python'. then we restarted the server once more and it was back to old behaviour. Thus it seems as we have a python path issue. I'm not the guy who is running the server, its my app that should run and it would be great to get some help here.   The mouse pointer in my Ubuntu 8.04.3 LTS VM (running in VMware Fusion) has changed into a little hand holding a document. It doesn't show up in screen-shots. All mouse clicks (left or right) are ignored. But I can still type in the one Terminal window I have open. (And commands work fine.) I wonder if I'm in some kind of drag-and-drop mode. How do I get out of this? Update: Rebooting (from the command-line) worked. Ubuntu came up with the regular mouse-pointer.

• rc.local is not executed on bootup ubuntu

  Im on Ubuntu 10.04. I want to execute script on system boot. I added it to rc.local. If I execute rc.local manually it works fine. If I boot system in recovery mode(2nd string in boot menu) it also works fine. But if I boot normally it is not executed. However i added sleep 20 to my script and there is a pause at the end of boot process, but nothing more is executed. • How to protect an OS X Server from an anautorized physical connection?

  Hi I have an OS X 10.6 server, which I administer via SSH and VNC (via SSH tunnel). I can't leave it at the login window since then VNC connections are refused. Therefore I currently leave it logged with my user account. Since it doesn't have a monitor attached, it doesn't go into screen saver mode, which means it doesn't require a password to retake control. This means it is very easy for anyone connecting a keyboard/mouse and monitor to take control of the system. The screen saver password protection, which I can't get to activate, unlike the system's login window, is perfectly compatible with VNC connections. How could I prevent such direct access to the server without connecting a monitor and without blocking my ability to connect with VNC? Thanks!

  I have been asked by a Client to refresh one of their Machines. To do this i managed to get Windows XP Setup to run in Repair mode, and while in setup i ran a serial key grabber, which grabbed the key for Office 2007 The only thing is that the key grabber didnt tell me what edition of Office 2007 was installed. I have aqquired a number of ISO's for the different editions (Home & Student, Standard, Professional, Ultimate) but the key doesnt work in any of them. Is there a way to get the edition from the Serial Key, or is there a generic ISO that will install any edition depending on the Serial Key?

• Vista won't boot - just get black screen

  When I boot into Windows Vista (Ultimate), I just get a black screen (with the mouse visible and working). If I run in safe mode, it seems to pause for a while when loading crcdisk.sys. A lot of research says it could be a problem with the hard drive, but I dual boot Ubuntu and that works fine and I can still see and use the Windows partition absolutely fine from Ubuntu. I tried using the "startup repair" option on the Vista install disk but it didn't detect any problems. I have run chkdsk several times, with this: chkdsk C: /f /r And also drive D (the recycle bin). The first two times it detected and fixed errors on the C drive but now it doesn't detect any errors. Is there anything else that could be causing this problem?

I have to make it "not always on top" and then "always on top" again and it will show up on top again. another thing that might or might not be a bug is: even when viewing video in full screen mode, the gadgets are all there. This may be one case where the user won't want all the gadgets on top when viewing a video full screen.

  I need to re-connect the network to a small old outbuilding that hasn't been used in several years. I have to use the existing 62.5um multi-mode fiber run. This end of the fiber is already connected. That's odd, because IIRC the fiber should really only do 1Gbps. It's also supposed to work with the switch I posted (2nd link), but the gbic port on the switch also only shows 1Gbps. What am I missing here?

• Why is Word 2007 not allowing me to select and edit text?

  I have just installed Office 2007 for a user. Word is acting strangely. If I open a document. The cursor just stays at the top left of the document and I can not place it anywhere else. I cannot select other text. I cannot write additional text. If I simply open up Word and start a new document I am allowed to type like normal. If I were to save and close this document and reopen it. I would not be able to input anything. Seems like I am stuck in some wrong input mode? I have already tried uninstalling and reinstalling. Any ideas?

• Suppress EXT3-fs warning on mount

  I am familiar with output suppress on Unix machines, ie: cat /file/that/doesnt/exist > /dev/null 2>& However I can't seem to suppress the output of mount when an ext3 filesystem is mounted for the nth time, and it recommends an fsck. As it happens, fscks are run regularly by another machine, so these warning messages are needlessly interrupting the flow of output to my pretty bash script. These are the errors: # mount -t ext3 /dev/sda1 /mnt > /dev/null 2>& kjournald starting. Commit interval 5 seconds EXT3-fs warning: maximal mount count reached, running e2fsck is recommended EXT3 FS 2.4-0.9.19, 19 August 2002 on sd(8,1), internal journal EXT3-fs: mounted filesystem with ordered data mode. Can anyone shed some light on this? I'm clearly blocking both fd's, but somehow output is still getting through. This is GNU Bash v2.05a

• Carbonite Restore Error after Windows Update

  I recently installed Windows 8 on my main machine, and I'm have an issue with Carbonite. I can't restore any files from my previous OS, only files that where backed up from the current OS. I can download them from the web service, but I can't restore them with the client. The error says "You don't have the necessary security permissions to restore this file." (The file on top was backed up from the new install, while the one on bottom was from the old install.) I'm also having another issue, where Carbonite doesn't think it's running in admin mode. I think it's probably related to this error. When I right click to restore a file, I can't choose a location to restore to. I contacted Carbonite, and they said it's a known issue that apparently happens when upgrade from XP to 7, but they wouldn't help me since I'm running a beta OS. Hopefully one of you fine folks will have an idea.
