  • Am I using Settings in .NET correctly?

    - by Sergio Tapia
    Here's what I'm doing. I have three properties: MomsBackground, DadsBackground and ChosenBackground. When Momsbackground is selected in the program, I set the ChosenBackground string according to what item the user has clicked (either "Mom" or "Dad"). Then on Form_Load() I use a switch case for the ChosenBackground string and according to that select This.BackgroundColor to MomsBackground or DadsBackground. Code below: Am I using this as it was intended? Sorry, codes there now. using System; using System.Collections.Generic; using System.ComponentModel; using System.Data; using System.Drawing; using System.Linq; using System.Text; using System.Windows.Forms; namespace WindowsFormsApplication1 { public partial class Form1 : Form { public Form1() { InitializeComponent(); } private void momToolStripMenuItem_Click(object sender, EventArgs e) { this.BackColor = Properties.Settings.Default.MomFormColor; Properties.Settings.Default.SelectedTheme = "Mom"; Properties.Settings.Default.Save(); } private void dadToolStripMenuItem_Click(object sender, EventArgs e) { this.BackColor = Properties.Settings.Default.DadFormColor; Properties.Settings.Default.SelectedTheme = "Dad"; Properties.Settings.Default.Save(); } private void Form1_Load(object sender, EventArgs e) { switch (Properties.Settings.Default.SelectedTheme) { case "Mom": this.BackColor = Properties.Settings.Default.MomFormColor; break; case "Dad": this.BackColor = Properties.Settings.Default.DadFormColor; break; default: break; } } } }

  • Counting elements and reading attributes with .net2.0 ?

    - by Prix
    I have an application that is on .net 2.0 and I am having some difficult with it as I am more use to linq. The xml file look like this: <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8" standalone="yes"?> <updates> <files> <file url="files/filename.ext" checksum="06B9EEA618EEFF53D0E9B97C33C4D3DE3492E086" folder="bin" system="0" size="40448" /> <file url="files/filename.ext" checksum="CA8078D1FDCBD589D3769D293014154B8854D6A9" folder="" system="0" size="216" /> <file url="files/filename.ext" checksum="CA8078D1FDCBD589D3769D293014154B8854D6A9" folder="" system="0" size="216" /> </files> </updates> The file is downloaded and readed on the fly: XmlDocument readXML = new XmlDocument(); readXML.LoadXml(xmlData); Initially i was thinking it would go with something like this: XmlElement root = doc.DocumentElement; XmlNodeList nodes = root.SelectNodes("//files"); foreach (XmlNode node in nodes) { ... im reading it ... } But before reading them I need to know how many they are to use on my progress bar and I am also clueless on how to grab the attribute of the file element in this case. How could I count how many "file" ELEMENTS I have (count them before entering the foreach ofc) and read their attributes ? I need the count because it will be used to update the progress bar. Overall it is not reading my xml very well.

  • Open the Word Application from a button on a web page

    - by Andrea
    I'm developing a proof of concept web application: A web page with a button that opens the Word Application installed on the user's PC. I'm stuck with a C# project in Visual Studio 2008 Express (Windows XP client, LAMP server). I've followed the Writing an ActiveX Control in .NET tutorial and after some tuning it worked fine. Then I added my button for opening Word. The problem is that I can reference the Microsoft.Office.Interop.Word from the project, but I'm not able to access it from the web page. The error says "That assembly does not allow partially trusted callers". I've read a lot about security in .NET, but I'm totally lost now. Disclaimer: I'm into .NET since 4 days ago. I've tried to work around this issue but I cannot see the light!! I don't even know if it will ever be possible! using System; using System.Collections.Generic; using System.ComponentModel; using System.Drawing; using System.Data; using System.Linq; using System.Text; using System.Windows.Forms; using Word = Microsoft.Office.Interop.Word; using System.IO; using System.Security.Permissions; using System.Security; [assembly: AllowPartiallyTrustedCallers] namespace OfficeAutomation { public partial class UserControl1 : UserControl { public UserControl1() { InitializeComponent(); } private void openWord_Click(object sender, EventArgs e) { try { Word.Application Word_App = null; Word_App = new Word.Application(); Word_App.Visible = true; } catch (Exception exc) { MessageBox.Show("Can't open Word application (" + exc.ToString() + ")"); } } } }

  • How to perform a binary search on IList<T>?

    - by Daniel Brückner
    Simple question - given an IList<T> how do you perform a binary search without writing the method yourself and without copying the data to a type with build-in binary search support. My current status is the following. List<T>.BinarySearch() is not a member of IList<T> There is no equivalent of the ArrayList.Adapter() method for List<T> IList<T> does not inherit from IList, hence using ArrayList.Adapter() is not possible I tend to believe that is not possible with build-in methods, but I cannot believe that such a basic method is missing from the BCL/FCL. If it is not possible, who can give the shortest, fastest, smartest, or most beatiful binary search implementation for IList<T>? UPDATE We all know that a list must be sorted before using binary search, hence you can assume that it is. But I assume (but did not verify) it is the same problem with sort - how do you sort IList<T>? CONCLUSION There seems to be no build-in binary search for IList<T>. One can use First() and OrderBy() LINQ methods to search and sort, but it will likly have a performance hit. Implementing it yourself (as an extension method) seems the best you can do.

  • How does this Singleton Web Class persists session data, even though session is not updated in the p

    - by Micah Burnett
    Ok, I've got this singleton-like web class which uses session to maintain state. I initially thought I was going to have to manipulate the session variables on each "set" so that the new values were updated in the session. However I tried using it as-is, and somehow, it remembers state. For example, if run this code on one page: UserContext.Current.User.FirstName = "Micah"; And run this code in a different browser tab, FirstName is displayed correctly: Response.Write(UserContext.Current.User.FirstName); Can someone tell me (prove) how this data is getting persisted in the session? Here is the class: using System; using System.Collections.Generic; using System.Linq; using System.Web; public class UserContext { private UserContext() { } public static UserContext Current { get { if (System.Web.HttpContext.Current.Session["UserContext"] == null) { UserContext uc = new UserContext(); uc.User = new User(); System.Web.HttpContext.Current.Session["UserContext"] = uc; } return (UserContext)System.Web.HttpContext.Current.Session["UserContext"]; } } private string HospitalField; public string Hospital { get { return HospitalField; } set { HospitalField = value; ContractField = null; ModelType = null; } } private string ContractField; public string Contract { get { return ContractField; } set { ContractField = value; ModelType = string.Empty; } } private string ModelTypeField; public string ModelType { get { return ModelTypeField; } set { ModelTypeField = value; } } private User UserField; public User User { get { return UserField; } set { UserField = value; } } public void DoSomething() { } } public class User { public int UserId { get; set; } public string FirstName { get; set; } }

  • F# Seq.initInfinite giving StackOverflowException

    - by TrueWill
    I'm learning F#, and I am having trouble understanding why this crashes. It's an attempt to solve Project Euler problem 2. let rec fibonacci n = if n = 1 then 1 elif n = 2 then 2 else fibonacci (n - 1) + fibonacci (n - 2) let debugfibonacci n = printfn "CALC: %d" n fibonacci n let isEven n = n % 2 = 0 let isUnderLimit n = n < 55 let getSequence = //[1..30] Seq.initInfinite (fun n -> n) |> Seq.map debugfibonacci |> Seq.filter isEven |> Seq.takeWhile isUnderLimit Seq.iter (fun x -> printfn "%d" x) getSequence The final version would call a sum function (and would have a higher limit than 55), but this is learning code. As is, this gives a StackOverflowException. However, if I comment in the [1..30] and comment out the Seq.initInfinite, I get: CALC: 1 CALC: 2 2 CALC: 3 CALC: 4 CALC: 5 8 CALC: 6 CALC: 7 CALC: 8 34 CALC: 9 CALC: 10 CALC: 11 It appears to be generating items on demand, as I would expect in LINQ. So why does it blow up when used with initInfinite?

  • Linking Listbox child categories

    - by Gerardo Abdo
    Hello I have few monhts working with aspx, and now I'm developing a shopping cart website. For the employee to upload the products on the DB, every product needs to be linked to a category and sub category, and sub-sub category, and so on. Sometimes the sub-sub categories are up to 5. For example Electronics-TV-LCD-Samsung-40 inches. First, What I would like to identify is if the SQL table has the apporpiate structure. I have 3 columns Id, Description, Parent_Id. Categories with Parent Id=0 is used for the top ones. Is this the best way to do it? Then I want to use the ListBox control to select main Categories, and once it is selected, filled a second listbox with its childs and so on. Do I need to query SQL DB everytime the change event happens? I heard about linq but have not used yet, What would be your suggestion to do this. If you have seen a sample to understand it better will be appreciated. Thank you

  • ASP.NET MVC Newbie: why isn't my model available when creating a strongly-typed view?

    - by Rax Olgud
    I'm starting with ASP.NET MVC, and working with NerdDinner as reference. I did the following: Created a new project Added a couple of tables Created LINQ to SQL for them Created a new controller My Models directory now contains MyModel.dbml, under which I have MyModel.designer.cs, that contains classes for models relating to both of my tables (let's call them Categories and Products). Now, under my new controller, I would like to create a strongly typed view. So for example I have the following code in my controller (for my application I must work by name, and the "Name" field is unique): public ActionResult Details(string name) { MyModelDataContext db = new MyModelDataContext(); Product user = db.Products.Single(t => t.Name == name); return View(user); } I would like to create a strongly-typed view. So I right-click the line "return View(user)", and choose "Add View...". I click "Create a strongly-typed view". When I click the dropdown of "View data class", I don't see my models, but only: MyProject.Controllers.AccountMembershipService MyProject.Controllers.FormsAuthenticationService What am I missing?

  • C#: Wrong answer when finding "cool" numbers.

    - by user300484
    Hello you all! In my application, a "cool" number is a number that is both a square and a cube, like for example: 64 = 8^2 and 64 = 4^3. My application is supposed to find the number of "cool numbers" between a range given by the user. I wrote my code and the application runs fine, but it is giving me the wrong answer. Can you help me here please? for example: IMPUT 1 100 OUTPUT 1 using System; using System.Collections.Generic; using System.Linq; using System.Text; namespace ConsoleApplication1 { class Program { static void Main(string[] args) { double a = Convert.ToDouble(Console.ReadLine()); // first number in the range double b = Convert.ToDouble(Console.ReadLine()); // second number in the range long x = 0; for (double i = a; i <= b; i++) { double cube = 1.0 / 3.0; double cuad = 1.0 / 2.0; double crt = Math.Pow(i, cube); // cube root double sqrt = Math.Pow(i, cuad); // square root if ((crt * 10) % 10 == 0 || (sqrt * 10) % 10 == 0) // condition to determine if it is a cool number. x++; } Console.WriteLine(x); Console.ReadLine(); } } }

  • Extension methods for encapsulation and reusability

    - by tzaman
    In C++ programming, it's generally considered good practice to "prefer non-member non-friend functions" instead of instance methods. This has been recommended by Scott Meyers in this classic Dr. Dobbs article, and repeated by Herb Sutter and Andrei Alexandrescu in C++ Coding Standards (item 44); the general argument being that if a function can do its job solely by relying on the public interface exposed by the class, it actually increases encapsulation to have it be external. While this confuses the "packaging" of the class to some extent, the benefits are generally considered worth it. Now, ever since I've started programming in C#, I've had a feeling that here is the ultimate expression of the concept that they're trying to achieve with "non-member, non-friend functions that are part of a class interface". C# adds two crucial components to the mix - the first being interfaces, and the second extension methods: Interfaces allow a class to formally specify their public contract, the methods and properties that they're exposing to the world. Any other class can choose to implement the same interface and fulfill that same contract. Extension methods can be defined on an interface, providing any functionality that can be implemented via the interface to all implementers automatically. And best of all, because of the "instance syntax" sugar and IDE support, they can be called the same way as any other instance method, eliminating the cognitive overhead! So you get the encapsulation benefits of "non-member, non-friend" functions with the convenience of members. Seems like the best of both worlds to me; the .NET library itself providing a shining example in LINQ. However, everywhere I look I see people warning against extension method overuse; even the MSDN page itself states: In general, we recommend that you implement extension methods sparingly and only when you have to. So what's the verdict? Are extension methods the acme of encapsulation and code reuse, or am I just deluding myself?

  • .NET - Is there a way to programmatically fill all tables in a strongly-typed dataset?

    - by Mike Loux
    Hello, all! I have a SQL Server database for which I have created a strongly-typed DataSet (using the DataSet Designer in Visual Studio 2008), so all the adapters and select commands and whatnot were created for me by the wizard. It's a small database with largely static data, so I would like to pull the contents of this DB in its entirety into my application at startup, and then grab individual pieces of data as needed using LINQ. Rather than hard-code each adapter Fill call, I would like to see if there is a way to automate this (possibly via Reflection). So, instead of: Dim _ds As New dsTest dsTestTableAdapters.Table1TableAdapter.Fill(_ds.Table1) dsTestTableAdapters.Table2TableAdapter.Fill(_ds.Table2) <etc etc etc> I would prefer to do something like: Dim _ds As New dsTest For Each tableName As String In _ds.Tables Dim adapter as Object = <routine to grab adapter associated with the table> adapter.Fill(tableName) Next Is that even remotely doable? I have done a fair amount of searching, and I wouldn't think this would be an uncommon request, but I must be either asking the wrong question, or I'm just weird to want to do this. I will admit that I usually prefer to use unbound controls and not go with strongly-typed datasets (I prefer to write SQL directly), but my company wants to go this route, so I'm researching it. I think the idea is that as tables are added, we can just refresh the DataSet using the Designer in Visual Studio and not have to make too many underlying DB code changes. Any help at all would be most appreciated. Thanks in advance!

  • Custom control doesn't fire validation

    - by Ed Woodcock
    I've written a custom ASP.net control that descends from LinkButton and overrides the Render() method. I'm using it to replace ImageButtons in the site I'm working on so we don't have to have an image for each button. This control works fine, does the required post-backs etc., however it doesn't fire the validators in its validation group. This is obviously an issue. The code for the control is (condensed) as follows: using System; using System.Collections.Generic; using System.Linq; using System.Web; using System.Web.UI; using System.Web.UI.WebControls; public class CustomButton : LinkButton { public string SpanCssClass { get; set; } protected override void Render(HtmlTextWriter writer) { if (!Visible) { return; } writer.AddAttribute(HtmlTextWriterAttribute.Name, UniqueID); writer.AddAttribute(HtmlTextWriterAttribute.Id, ClientID); writer.AddAttribute(HtmlTextWriterAttribute.Class, CssClass); string postback = string.IsNullOrEmpty(OnClientClick) ? "javascript:__doPostBack('" + UniqueID + "','');" : OnClientClick; writer.AddAttribute(HtmlTextWriterAttribute.Href, postback); writer.RenderBeginTag(HtmlTextWriterTag.A); writer.AddAttribute(HtmlTextWriterAttribute.Class, SpanCssClass); writer.RenderBeginTag(HtmlTextWriterTag.Span); writer.Write(Text); writer.RenderEndTag(); writer.RenderEndTag(); } } Does anyone know why this would not be causing the validators to fire? I was under the impression that leaving all the other methods in LinkButton un-overridden would leave all the other functionality the same!

  • Best way to detect similar email addresses?

    - by Chris
    I have a list of ~20,000 email addresses, some of which I know to be fraudulent attempts to get around a "1 per e-mail" limit. ([email protected], [email protected], [email protected], etc...). I want to find similar email addresses for evaluation. Currently I'm using a levenshtein algorithm to check each e-mail against the others in the list and report any with an edit distance of less than 2. However, this is painstakingly slow. Is there a more efficient approach? The test code I'm using now is: using System; using System.Collections.Generic; using System.Linq; using System.Text; using System.IO; using System.Threading; namespace LevenshteinAnalyzer { class Program { const string INPUT_FILE = @"C:\Input.txt"; const string OUTPUT_FILE = @"C:\Output.txt"; static void Main(string[] args) { var inputWords = File.ReadAllLines(INPUT_FILE); var outputWords = new SortedSet<string>(); for (var i = 0; i < inputWords.Length; i++) { if (i % 100 == 0) Console.WriteLine("Processing record #" + i); var word1 = inputWords[i].ToLower(); for (var n = i + 1; n < inputWords.Length; n++) { if (i == n) continue; var word2 = inputWords[n].ToLower(); if (word1 == word2) continue; if (outputWords.Contains(word1)) continue; if (outputWords.Contains(word2)) continue; var distance = LevenshteinAlgorithm.Compute(word1, word2); if (distance <= 2) { outputWords.Add(word1); outputWords.Add(word2); } } } File.WriteAllLines(OUTPUT_FILE, outputWords.ToArray()); Console.WriteLine("Found {0} words", outputWords.Count); } } }

  • NHibernate listener/event to replace object before insert/update

    - by vIceBerg
    Hi! I have a Company class which have a collection of Address. Here's my Address class:(written top of my head): public class Address { public string Civic; public string Street; public City City; } This is the City class: public class City { public int Id; public string Name; public string SearchableName{ get { //code } } } Address is persisted in his own table and have a reference to the city's ID. City are also persisted in is own table. The City's SearchableName is used to prevent some mistakes in the city the user type. For example, if the city name is "Montréal", the searchable name will be "montreal". If the city name is "St. John", the searchable name will be "stjohn", etc. It's used mainly to to search and to prevent having multiple cities with a typo in it. When I save an address, I want an listener/event to check if the city is already in the database. If so, cancel the insert and replace the user's city with the database one. I would like the same behavior with updates. I tried this: public bool OnPreInsert(PreInsertEvent @event) { City entity = (@event.Entity as City); if (entity != null) { if (entity.Id == 0) { var city = (from c in @event.Session.Linq<City>() where c.SearchableName == entity.SearchableName select c).SingleOrDefault(); if (city != null) { //don't know what to do here return true; } } } return false; } But if there's already a City in the database, I don't know what to do. @event.Entity is readonly, if I set @event.Entity.Id, I get an "null identifier" exception. I tried to trap insert/update on Address and on Company, but the City if the first one to get inserted (it's logic...) Any thoughts? Thanks

  • Parsing XML in C# from stream

    - by Phillip
    I've tried several methods, from Linq to loading the data to an XML document, but i can't seem to be able to return the result that i need. here's the example XML: <serv:message xmlns:serv="http://www.webex.com/schemas/2002/06/service" xmlns:com="http://www.webex.com/schemas/2002/06/common" xmlns:event="http://www.webex.com/schemas/2002/06/service/event"><serv:header><serv:response><serv:result>SUCCESS</serv:result><serv:gsbStatus>PRIMARY</serv:gsbStatus></serv:response></serv:header><serv:body><serv:bodyContent xsi:type="event:createEventResponse" xmlns:xsi="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema-instance"><event:sessionKey>11111111</event:sessionKey><event:guestToken>111111111111111111111</event:guestToken></serv:bodyContent></serv:body></serv:message> And, here's what i've tried to do: StreamReader reader = new StreamReader(dataStream); XmlDocument doc = new XmlDocument(); doc.LoadXml(reader.ReadToEnd()); XmlNamespaceManager ns = new XmlNamespaceManager(doc.NameTable); XmlNamespaceManager ns2 = new XmlNamespaceManager(doc.NameTable); XmlNamespaceManager ns3 = new XmlNamespaceManager(doc.NameTable); ns.AddNamespace("serv", "http://www.webex.com/schemas/2002/06/service"); ns2.AddNamespace("com", "http://www.webex.com/schemas/2002/06/common"); ns3.AddNamespace("event", "http://www.webex.com/schemas/2002/06/service/event"); XmlNode node = doc.SelectSingleNode("result",ns); Yet, for some reason i cannot ever seem to return the actual result, which should be either 'SUCCESS' or 'FAILURE' based on the actual xml above. How can i do this?

  • why MVC instead of good old asp.net? Still not grasping why I should go this route??

    - by RJ
    I know this question has been asked before and I read all the answers but they still don't give me the answers I am looking for. I need something concrete. I volunteered to give a presentation on MVC to other developers in our group which forces me to learn it. The big question everyone has is: "What can MVC bring to the table that we can't do in asp.net or MVC can do faster. I have just gone through Nerd Dinner and actually created a complete website that sort of mimics Nerd Dinner. But as great a job that Scott Guthrie did on it, there are big gaps that aren't answered such as, how do I throw a textbox on the listing page with a button and do a simple search. In asp.net, I would throw a textbox, button and grid on the page and bind it to a sproc and away I go. What is the equivalent in MVC. I guess I need a really good tutorial on how to use MVC without using Linq-to-Sql. I know I am sort of babbling on about this but it is a very serious question that still seems to go unanswered. On a side note, the View page of MVC brings back nightmares of classic asp with all the in-line code that we got away from way back when with code behind pages. Yes, MVC has Controller and Model classes which are great but I still don't like the classic asp tags in the html. • Wrong answer on c# application, finding the n prime of a list of prime numbers.

    - by user300484
    Hello, I am new to C# and I am practicing by trying to solve this easy C# problem. This application will receive an "n" number. After receiving this number, the program has to show the n prime of the list of primes. For example, if the user enters "3", the program is supposed to display "5", because 5 is the third prime starting at 2. I koow that something is wrong with my code but I dont know where is the problem and how I can fix it. Can you please tell me? Thank you :P using System; using System.Collections.Generic; using System.Linq; using System.Text; namespace ConsoleApplication1 { class Program { static void Main(string[] args) { Console.WriteLine("Determinar el n-esimo primo."); long n = Convert.ToInt64(Console.ReadLine()); // N lugar de primos long[] array = new long[n]; long c=0; while (c >= 2) { if(siprimo(c++) == true) for (long i = 0; i < n; i++) { array[i] = c; } } Console.WriteLine(array[n - 1]); Console.ReadLine(); } static private bool siprimo(long x) { bool sp = true; for (long k = 2; k <= x / 2; k++) if (x % k == 0) sp = false; return sp; } } }

  • How to save timers with connection to OrderId?

    - by Adrian Serafin
    Hi! I have a system where clients can make orders. After making order they have 60 minutes to pay fot it before it will be deleted. On the server side when order is made i create timer and set elapsed time to 60 minutes System.Timer.Timers timer = new System.Timers.Timer(1000*60*60); timer.AutoReset = false; timer.Elapsed += HandleElapsed; timer.Start(); Because I want to be able to dispose timer if client decides to pay and I want to be able to cancel order if he doesn't I keep two Dictionaries: Dictionary<int, Timer> _orderTimer; Dictionary<Timer, int> _timerOrder; Then when client pay's I can access Timer by orderId with O(1) thanks to _orderTimer dictionary and when time elapsed I can access order with O(1) thanks to _timerOrder dictionary. My question is: Is it good aproach? Assuming that max number of rows I have to keep in dictionary in one moment will be 50000? Maybe it would be better to derive from Timer class, add property called OrderId, keep it all in List and search for order/timer using linq? Or maybe you I should do this in different way?

  • How to make that the LanguageBinder take precedence over the DynamicBinder

    - by rudimenter
    Hi I Have a class which implement IDynamicMetaObjectProvider I implement the BindGetMember Method from DynamicMetaObject. Now when i Generate a dynamic Object and Access a property every call gets implicit passed through the BindGetMember Method. I want that at first the language Binder get his chance before my code comes in. It is somehow doable with "binder.FallbackGetMember" but i am not sure how the expression has to look like. I call here dynamic com=CommandFactory.GetCommand(); com.testprop; //expected: "test"; but "test2" comes back public class Command : System.Dynamic.IDynamicMetaObjectProvider { public string testprop { get { return "test"; } } public object GetValue(string name) { return "test2"; } System.Dynamic.DynamicMetaObject System.Dynamic.IDynamicMetaObjectProvider.GetMetaObject(System.Linq.Expressions.Expression parameter) { return new MetaCommand(parameter, this); } private class MetaCommand : System.Dynamic.DynamicMetaObject { public MetaCommand(Expression expression, Command value) : base(expression, System.Dynamic.BindingRestrictions.Empty, value) { } public override System.Dynamic.DynamicMetaObject BindGetMember(System.Dynamic.GetMemberBinder binder) { var self = this.Expression; var bag = (Command)base.Value; Expression target; target = Expression.Call( Expression.Convert(self, typeof(Command)), typeof(Command).GetMethod("GetValue"), Expression.Constant(binder.Name) ); var restrictions = BindingRestrictions .GetInstanceRestriction(self, bag); return new DynamicMetaObject(target, restrictions); } #endregion } }
