• USB Mouse stutters periodically

  I'm using an HP dv6000 (not sure of exact model) with a pretty basic Logitech wireless laptop mouse. From time to time, the USB mouse will be very stuttery and less responsive. Not all clicks register and the motion is not smooth. It seems like it's related to the notify-osd coming up when I get an IM or Email or whatever else, but it happens other times as well. It's not the whole computer becoming less responsive, because if I use the touch pad during one of these fits, it works perfectly smooth. I've replaced the batteries in the mouse and have tried different USB ports with better line of sight, etc. I can't figure out what's going on. Any thoughts?

  Basically I have a series of logic in my website that can lead to 5 total outcomes. Basically two different if tests and then a catch all else statement. For example: if cond1: if mod1: #do things elif mod2: #do things elif cond2: if mod1: #do things elif mod2 #do things else: #do things I was thinking about rewriting it like this: if cond1 and mod1: #do things elif cond1 and mod2: #do things elif cond2 and mod1: #do things elif cond2 and mod2: #do things else: #do things Is there any real difference in these two coding options/a better choice for this kind of logic testing?

• Looking for a dynamic programming solution

  Given a sequence of integers in range 1 to n. Each number can appear at most once. Let there be a symbol X in the sequence which means remove the minimum element from the list. There can be an arbitrarily number of X in the sequence. Example: 1,3,4,X,5,2,X The output is 1,2. We need to find the best way to perform this operation. The solution I have been thinking is: Scan the sequence from left to right and count number of X which takes O(n) time. Perform partial sorting and find the k smallest elements (k = number of X) which takes O(n+klogk) time using median of medians. Is there a better way to solve this problem using dynamic programming or any other way ?

Now from my understanding if this was all done in hard coding I'd have to go into the code just to add stuff to it. I've looked at things like drupal and I get how those work, but I how would I be able to add this to my site? The same kind of concept? Also, one more thing, what does inc operating php into a website offer? like better looks or general preformence? I don't understand this. Excuse my grammar/spelling. • Link to pages on site without .html extension appearing in browser?

  I've modified my .htaccess file to allow access to html files without having to include the extension on the end, for example: www.mysite.com/document directs to www.mysite.com/document.html However, when I want to link to pages within my site using something like <a href="page.html"></a> I still get the .html appearing in the URL. So am I allowed to exclude the extension and leave a link as <a href="page"></a> so that the extension doesn't appear in the browser? Or is there a better way to do it?

• Language-independent sources on 2D collision detection [on hold]

  While making a Pong clone with a friend, we had to implement some 2D collision detection. For research purposes, my friend dug up a book called "AdvancED Game Design with Flash" by Rex Van Der Spuy. This book was clearly targeted at implementing 2D collision detection in ActionScript, and I also have some problems with how the concepts are presented, e.g. presenting one method as better than another, without explaining that decision. Can anyone recommend some good material on 2D collision detection? I'd prefer it if it kept the implementation details as language-independent as possible, e.g. by implementing the concepts in pseudo-code. Language-specific materials are not completely unwelcome though, though I'd prefer those to be in either Java, C#, F# or Python or similar languages, as those are the ones I'm most familiar with. :-) Lastly, is there perhaps widely known and used book on collision detection that most people should know about, like a 'the book on 2D collision detection'?

• Can anyone recommend a good SMS gateway for PHP?

  I'm looking for an SMS gateway that has the following criteria: Supports sending from short codes Opt-in capabilities for end-user (will require user to opt in before sending message) Has a clean API, preferably an XML/ REST API, although SOAP is fine The cheaper the better Honestly, I keep searching and searching all permutations of "SMS Gateway API" etc... on Google and I can't find any great services that can support all of these criteria. There are a lot of really SEO optimized sites and I can't tell which of them are legit. I'm looking for something that will be easy and quick to implement, and none of my colleagues have any recommendations. What APIs have you used (preferably with PHP) that have gotten this job done? Which services have been the most pleasant to deal with, both technically and support-wise? Update: Will be sending primarily (probably solely) in the US.

• How can I increase the text size in empathy chat windows?

  The text that appears in empathy chat windows is quite small, even though I have set the font DPI to a large value in Preferences Appearance. There does not appear to be any option to make this larger so that I can read what other people are sending me easily. I've been using pidgin in the meantime because it is a little better in this respect. I would be grateful for any tips on how to increase the text size in empathy chat windows, even if this involves clever .gtkrc-2.0 hacks. Thanks!

• Introduce unit testing when codebase is already available

  I've been working on a project in Flex for three years now without unit testing. The simple reason for that is the fact that I just didn't realize the importance of unit testing when being at the beginning of studies at university. Now my attitude towards testing changed completely and therefore I want to introduce it to the existing project (about 25000LOC). In order to do it, there are two approaches to choose from: 1) Discard the existing codebase and start from scratch with TDD 2) Write the tests and try to make them pass by changing the existing code Well, I would appreciate not having to write everything from scratch but I think by doing this, the design would be much better.   In the process of learning test-driven development, I've been introduced to dependency injection and the use of interfaces, and have started using these concepts in my own PHP code in order to make it more testable. There have been times when I've needed to test code that was doing things like calling the PHP time() function. In order to make these tests predictable, it seemed logical to create an interface to the standard PHP functions I use so that I can mock them out in my tests. Is this good software design? What are the pros and cons of doing this? I've found myself groaning at how quickly my PHP interface can stick its fingers into everything I do. Is there a better way to make code that relies on PHP-accessed state and functions more testable?

  I have lots of code like this in my constructors:- function __construct($params) { $this->property = isset($params['property']) ? $params['property'] : default_val; } Is it better to do this rather than specify the default value in the property definition? i.e. public $property = default_val? Sometimes there is logic for the default value, and some default values are taken from other properties, which was why I was doing this in the constructor. Should I be using setters so all the logic for default values is separated?

• Why doesn't Unity 3D work on my HD3000 integrated graphics?

  So I got my new laptop recently. HP Envy 15 with switchable graphics card. I'm using both windows and ubuntu, but for ubuntu I need just Intel HD3000 for better battery live. I've installed fglrx-updates and fglrx-amdcccle-updates. The drivers seems to work for my ATI card. The problem is, Intel HD3000 does not support Unity 3D. Why? • How to flag a class as under development in Java

  I'm working on a internship project, but I have to leave before I can finish up everything. I have 1 class that is not stable enough for production use. I want to mark/flag this class so that other people will not accidentally use it in production. I have already put the notice in Javadoc, but that doesn't seem enough. Some compiler error or warning would be better. The code is organized like this: [Package] | company.foo.bar.myproject |-- Class1.java |-- Class2.java |-- Class3.java <--(not stable) If there was a single factory class that calls those classes in public methods, I could have set the method to class3 as private. However the API is NOT exposed that way. Users will directly use those class, e.g. new Class1();, but I can't make a top-level class private. What's the best practice to deal with this situation?

Is this a pattern or an anti pattern? If so, does it have a name and are there any well known pros and cons to this approach? Is there a better way to achieve the same result? Rewriting the interfaces and/or the concrete implementation is not normally an option as it will be provided by a third party library.

  I did not study CS nor IT. I just became a developer, now working with Java. Actually, since I now work with a big company writing high-scalable web applications, I think I need to be better with details. I have no understanding of what happens underneath of Java. Java Performance, Server-Side Java might be the buzz words?!! I am very poor with those more of low-level details but I do not know where to look honestly. I started looking for some keywords in Amazon, ended up reading books like "pragmatic programmer", "clean code", "code complete" which IMO they are not what I am looking for. Could you please give me some learning resources (books, articles, blog posts, online trainings) for this matter? • Distro that I can load into RAM?

  Is there a modified version of Ubuntu that I can choose to load to RAM on start up? Kinda like the LiveCD, but that can be easily modified (ie: I can install stuff) when I choose to boot from disk. The idea is to install it to a USB drive. I know there's something similar but slax is lacking in many departments. A "full" version Ubuntu would be better. A LiveUSB installation seems to be pretty close to what I want, but apparently I have to choose whether or not it will be persistent by the time I install it. I want to be able to choose that every time I boot.

• rotate opengl mesh relative to camera

  I have a cube in opengl. It's position is determined by multiplying it's specific model matrix, the view matrix, and the projection matrix and then passing that to the shader as per this tutorial (http://www.opengl-tutorial.org/beginners-tutorials/tutorial-3-matrices/). I want to rotate it relative to the camera. The only way I can think of getting the correct axis is by multiplying the inverse of the model matrix (because that's where all the previous rotations and tranforms are stored) times the view matrix times the axis of rotation (x or y). I feel like there's got to be a better way to do this like use something other than model, view and projection matrices, or maybe I'm doing something wrong. That's what all the tutorials I've seen use. PS I'm also trying to keep with opengl 4 core stuff. edit: If quaternions would fix my problems, could someone point me to a good tutorial/example for switching from 4x4 matrices to quaternions. I'm a little daunted by the task.

• How to ensure that a member variable is initialized before calling a class method

  There's a class with a parametrized constructor that initializes a member variable. All public methods of the class then use this member variable to do something. I want to ensure that the caller always creates an object using the parametrized constructor (there is also a setter for this member variable) and then call that object's methods. In essence, it should be impossible for the caller to call any method without setting a value to the member variable (either by using the parametrized constructor or the setter). Currently, a caller can simply make an object using the default constructor and then call that object's method - I want to avoid checking whether or not the member variable is set in each and every one of the 20-odd methods of the class (and throw an exception if it is not). Though a runtime solution is acceptable (better than the one I mentioned above); a compile-time solution is preferable so that any developer will not be allowed to make that mistake and then waste hours debuggging it!

  Like me you may be have been frustrated by the lack of colour in VS2012. The flat look, reminicent of the early 'Gem' OS is bad enough, but when the only choices are a washed out white look or the deadly all-black look, it's not an easy product to work with.Fortunately MS themselves seem to have quietly taken notice of this, or at least one of their developers has, and a 'Color Theme Editor' extension has been released. This comes with some much better colour schemes (I'm using the blue one, which is fairly close to VS2010) and also allows you to create and edit themes youself.This extension doesn't come up when you search 'Extensions and Updates' but can be found at http://tinyurl.com/6rhkdejWith this, using VS2012 finally becomes a pleasurable experience.
