• Flex AS3: Assign a button's upSkin property with a remote file dynamically?

  I am building a Flex application with ActionScript 3. Unfortunately I've hit a wall with this one... I would like to be able to apply an upSkin to my dynamically generated button like this: //this theSkin variable is dynamic in my app, but for this example it's a simple string var theSkin:String = "http://www.mypicturedomain.com/images/myimage.gif"; var navBtn:Button = new Button(); navBtn.id = "thumb1"; navBtn.width = 60; navBtn.height = 45; //skin the button navBtn.setStyle("upSkin", theSkin); //add the button to my canvas myCanvas.addChild(navBtn); When I attempt this, I get this error: TypeError: Error #1034: Type Coercion failed: cannot convert flash.display::Loader@3dac941 to Class. How do I skin this button with my image dynamically? A couple of things to consider: The upSkin image must be remote. It can't be local. The button must be generated dynamically (it's in a for loop). Any help/ideas would be much appreciated at this point!

• Graphviz or Dynagraph for Graph-manipulation Program?

  I'm looking into writing a program that will show a graph to the user. The graph will change over time (the user should be able to right-click on a graph item and ask for more detail, which will pop out new bits of the graph), and the user might be able to drag parts of the graph around. I would ideally also like to be able to specify the relative layout of certain parts of the graph myself while leaving the overall layout up to a library, but that's not essential. I'm trying to decide on a graph layout library to use. As far as I can tell, the two leading candidates are Graphviz and Dynagraph. The Dynagraph website suggests that Graphviz is for drawing static graphs, and that Dynagraph was forked from Graphviz and contains algorithms for graphs that will be updated. It has a sample program called Dynasty that does exactly what I want. However, the Graphviz site contains an example program called Lefty which seems to do exactly what I want. Graphviz also seems to be much more widely used, judging by Google (and SO) results. Finally, I'd like to code the GUI part in a language like Python or Scheme, which makes me a bit hesitant to use C++ because I understand it's harder to interface that to interpreters. So my question is, which library is better for what I'm trying to do? Do they both have strong and weak points? Has one of them actually ceased development and is just leaving its website up to confuse me? (I've seen http://stackoverflow.com/questions/464000/simple-dynamic-graph-display-for-c and http://stackoverflow.com/questions/2376987/open-source-libraries-to-design-directed-graphs, but I can't tell whether they're right about the Graphviz or Dynagraph choice because of Lefty and also the language issue.)

• Setting System.Drawing.Color through .NET COM Interop

  I am trying to use Aspose.Words library through COM Interop. There is one critical problem: I cannot set color. It is supposed to work by assigning to DocumentBuilder.Font.Color, but when I try to do it I get OLE error 0x80131509.   I have converted most of my Apache HTTPd mod_rewrite rules over to nginx's HttpRewrite module (which calls PHP-FPM via FastCGI on every dynamic request). Bonus points if I can solve the parsing issues without the need to use a new rule for each number of route properties.

• Nested multithread operations tracing

  I've a code alike void ExecuteTraced(Action a, string message) { TraceOpStart(message); a(); TraceOpEnd(message); } The callback (a) could call ExecuteTraced again, and, in some cases, asynchronously (via ThreadPool, BeginInvoke, PLINQ etc, so I've no ability to explicitly mark operation scope). I want to trace all operation nested (even if they perform asynchronously). So, I need the ability to get last traced operation inside logical call context (there may be a lot of concurrent threads, so it's impossible to use lastTraced static field). There're CallContext.LogicalGetData and CallContext.LogicalSetData, but unfortunately, LogicalCallContext propagates changes back to the parent context as EndInvoke() called. Even worse, this may occure at any moment if EndInvoke() was called async. http://stackoverflow.com/questions/883486/endinvoke-changes-current-callcontext-why Also, there is Trace.CorrelationManager, but it based on CallContext and have all the same troubles. There's a workaround: use the CallContext.HostContext property which does not propagates back as async operation ended. Also, it does'nt clone, so the value should be immutable - not a problem. Though, it's used by HttpContext and so, workaround is not usable in Asp.Net apps. The only way I see is to wrap HostContext (if not mine) or entire LogicalCallContext into dynamic and dispatch all calls beside last traced operation. Help, please!

• Flex 4 vs JavaScript Options (Cappuccino, JQuery, etc.)

  Rehashing an older post: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/1570070/jquery-vs-flex-choosing-a-platform-for-saas We are preparing to develop an application that is exceptionally dynamic and interactive. It's particularly heavy on the graphics side. We are 85% convinced that Adobe Flash built atop Flex is the right path to take, however Cappuccino is quite nice and seems as though it may be able to nearly fit the bill. The only pause we have right now is portability for the iPhone. With the lack of blessings from Apple we will most certainly have to create a 2nd interface for the iPhone for the site, however... Having two interfaces may not be bad as it will likely have to be custom anyway to take advantage of the differences that it affords. Any further thoughts or reevaluations of points enumerated in the noted article? Further, Flex 4 adds a lot of strength to the position mentioned previously regarding UI development. Fx4 is very nice vs Fx3 and shaves 90% from the development time when coupled with Flash Catalyst, which is not really always fully appropriate, but with some round trip tricks it seems as though it can cut through things rather well... Please do advise and many thanks.

• Annotation to make available generic type

  Given an generic interface like interface DomainObjectDAO<T> { T newInstance(); add(T t); remove(T t); T findById(int id); // etc... } I'd like to create a subinterface that specifies the type parameter: interface CustomerDAO extends DomainObjectDAO<Customer> { // customer-specific queries - incidental. } The implementation needs to know the actual template parameter type, but of course type erasure means isn't available at runtime. Is there some annotation that I could include to declare the interface type? Something like @GenericParameter(Customer.class) interface CustomerDAO extends DomainObjectDAO<Customer> { } The implementation could then fetch this annotation from the interface and use it as a substitute for runtime generic type access. Some background: This interface is implemented using JDK dynamic proxies as outlined here. The non-generic version of this interface has been working well, but it would be nicer to use generics and not have to create a subinterface for each domain object type. The actual type is needed at runtime to implement the newInstance method, amongst others.

• Majordomo/Mailman - Yahoo/Google Groups

  Hi. Not an app question, but thought that I might ask here anyway! The responses might help someone. I've got an app where we're going to be dealing with 5000-10000 people in a group/pool. Periodically, different subsets of people will break off in their own group. I'm looking for thoughts on how to manage/approach this situation. (For now, all of this is being managed on a few servers in the garage, with dynamic IP) I've looked into the Yahoo/google groups, and they seem to be reasonable. The primary issue that I see with this approach, is that I don't have a good way of quickly/easily alowing a subset of the group to form their own group for a given project. This kind of function is critical. The upside to this though, I wouldn't have to really set anything up. And the hosted groups could send emails to the user all day along, without running into cap/bandwidth limits The other approach is a managed list, like mailman/majordomo. This approach appears to be more flexible, and looks like ti could be modified to handle the quick creation of lists, allowing users to quickly be assigned to different lists on the fly.. The downside, I'd have to run my own Mailman/Majordomo instance, as well as the associated mail server. Or I could look at possibly using one of the hosted service.. But this is for a project on the cheap, so we're really trying to keep costs down. Thoughts/Comments/Pointers would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance -tom

• Positioning SVG Elements

  In the course of toying with SVG for the first time (using the Raphael library), I've run into a problem positioning dynamic elements on the canvas in such a way that they're completely contained within the canvas. What I'm trying to do is randomly position n words/short phrases. Since the text is variable, its position needs to be variable as well so what I'm doing is: Initially creating the text at point 0,0 with no opacity. Checking the width of the drawn text element using text.getBBox().width. Setting a new x coordinate as Math.random() * (canvas_width - ( text_width/2 ) - pad). Altering the x coordinate of the text to the newly set value (text.attr( 'x', x ) ). Setting the opacity attribute of the text to 1. I'll be the first to admit that my math acumen is limited, but this seems pretty straightforward. Somehow, I still end up with text running off beyond the right edge of my canvas. For simplicity above, I removed the bit that also sets a minimum x value by adding it to the Math.random() result. It is there, though, and I see the same problem on the leading edge of the canvas. My understanding (such as it is), is that the Math.random() bits would generate a number between 0 and 1 which could then be multiplied by some number (in my case, the canvas width - half of the text width - some arbitrary padding) to get the outer bound. I'm dividing the width of the text in half because its position on the grid is set at its center. I hope I've just been staring at this for too long, but is my math that rusty or am I misunderstanding something about the behavior of Math.random(), SVG, text or anything else that's under the hood of this solution?

• Selecting a Java framework for large application w/ only ONE user

  I am building a large application that will be hosted on an AWS server. I'm trying to select a web framework for assisting me with code organization, template design, and generally presentation aspects. Here are some points of consideration: Require security/login/user authentication. I may add the ability in the future to allow more than just an administrator to access the web app, but it is not a public facing website. AJAX support would be helpful. There are a couple widgets that I don't want to recreate. One is a tree object, where the user can expand/contract items in the list, can create new branches, add/edit objects. This would be better off in some dynamic view rather than all done in ugly html. Generally, this is just to provide the application with a face for control, management, and monitoring. Having an easier time adding buttons, CSS, AJAX widgets are great additions though, but not the primary purpose. I'm considering: Wicket Spring Seam GWT Stripe and the list goes on, as I'm sure you all know. I originally planned on using GWT, but then started to feel that GWT didn't cover my primary needs. I could be wrong about this, but there seems to be a lot of support for GWT AND Wicket/Spring. All of this 'getting lost in java frameworks' got me thinking outside the java realm for a framework that would suit my needs that was a clear option, like: JRuby/Rails Jython/Django Groovy/Grails Guice (just throwing this in there... I don't clearly understand the main purposes of all these frameworks. It doesn't seem like DInjection is something I need for a single purpose application) Thanks as always. This community makes Googling for esoteric programming information an order of magnitude better.

• Using R in Processing through rJava/JRI?

  Hi guys, Is it possible to run R in Processing through rJava/JRI? If I deployed a Processing app on the web, would the client need R on their system? I'm looking to create an interactive information dashboard that I can deploy on the web. It seems that Processing is probably my best bet for the interactive/web part of things. Unfortunately, it doesn't look like there are many math/stats functions built-in. And there aren't any libraries for plotting data either. I've been using R and gpplot2 for a few months and am thrilled (amazed) at how easily it manipulates and plots data. So I'm wondering now if can get the best of both worlds and run R through a Processing applet. From the JRI website: JRI is a Java/R Interface, which allows to run R inside Java applications as a single thread. Basically it loads R dynamic library into Java and provides a Java API to R functionality. It supports both simple calls to R functions and a full running REPL. In a sense JRI is the inverse of rJava and both can be combined (i.e. you can run R code inside JRI that calls back to the JVM via rJava). The JGR project makes the full use of both JRI and rJava to provide a full Java GUI for R. JRI uses native code, but it supports all platforms where Sun's Java (or compatible) is available, including Windows, Mac OS X, Sun and Linux (both 32-bit and 64-bit). Thanks for the advice :)

• NSString sizeWithFont: returning inconsistent results? known bug?

  I'm trying to create a simple custom UIView wich contain a string drawn with a single font, but where the first character is slightly larger. I thought this would be easily implemented with two UILabel:s placed next to eachother. I use NSString sizeWithFont to measure my string to be able to lay it out correctly. But I noticed that the font baseline in the returned rectangle varies with +/- 1 pixel depending on the font size I set. But if I instead use 13.0 and 15.0, then the first character is 1 pixel too high. Is this a known problem? Any suggestions how to work around it? Creating a UIWebView with a CSS and HTML page seems way overkill for this. and more work to handle dynamic strings. Is that what I'm expected to do?

• fixed layout in formview template

  I have n pages with formviews, all sharing a similar layout inside their item/edit/insert templates. For example all item and edit templates have a header and body part inside where i put the fields. The header has a certain style and the body part too. My question is how can i enforce this style in all my formviews without repeating the same bulk css styles all the time. Now i'm using masterpages for this with multiple formviews on 1 page. That's not good i think. I want one 1 page for edit/insert/item and 1 formview. I would prefer somehow to define the style for edit template once and load it into every formview. Ofcourse not all the formviews have the same fields, so like masterpages i would like to have 'areas' where i can put my fields. The perfect way i suppose would be to have a formview span a complete masterpage based page including the contentplaceholders inside it's edit/insert/item templates. Any ideas are more than welcome. Edit: I read it's possible in .Net 4 using dynamic data. I'm stuck with 3.5 for the moment.

• Populating JavaScript Array from JSP List

  Ok so perhaps someone can help me with a problem I'm trying to solve. Essentially I have a JSP page which gets a list of Country objects (from the method referenceData() from a Spring Portlet SimpleFormController, not entirely relevant but just mentioning in case it is). Each Country object has a Set of province objects and each province and country have a name field: public class Country { private String name; private Set<Province> provinces; //Getters and setters } public class Province { private String name; //Getters and setters } Now I have two drop down menus in my JSP for countries and provinces and I want to filter the provinces by country. I've been following this tutorial/guide to make a chain select in JavaScript. Now I need a dynamic way to create the JavaScript array from my content. And before anyone mentions AJAX this is out of the question since our project uses portlets and we'd like to stay away from using frameworks like DWR or creating a servlet. Here is the JavaScript/JSP I have so far but it is not populating the Array with anything: var countries = new Array(); <c:forEach items="${countryList}" var="country" varStatus="status"> countries[status.index] = new Array(); countries[status.index]['country'] = ${country.name}; countries[status.index]['provinces'] = [ <c:forEach items="${country.provinces}" var="province" varStatus="provinceStatus"> '${province.name}' <c:if test="${!provinceStatus.last}"> , </c:if> </c:forEach> ]; </c:forEach> Does anyone know how to create an JavaScript array in JSP in the case above or what the 'best-practice' would be considered in this case?   UPDATE: I have figured out a way using a form of dynamic sql to fix this problem, thanks anyway for any help. Hi, there is something that I need to accomplish with the use of Full-Text Indexing. This is it: The fact of the matter is when I run a query (with a stored procedure) that looks like (with a parameter (@name) that was obviously defined above (not shown here), this parameter is sent to the stored procedure by an asp.net page, from user input): SELECT Name FROMdbo.UsersTable WHERE FREETEXT(Name, @name) Well, the fact of the matter is that a query like this will return values if, say the parameter @name's value is Joe, and say, there are 10 records of names with Joe in them, but if @name's value is just Jo, then it returns nothing, and this is the problem. Say that there are other records in this table that have Jo in them, like for example, Jole, or John. So the real question is, how do I get it to return values that are not full words, or phrases, but just from part of the word/phrase (like I said above)? Like FREETEXT(Name, @name*), which is not allowed to be used as a query, but, you get the idea. Is there a way to accomplish this? I'm sure there must be, I need to figure this out. • Extract <name> attribute from KML

  I am using OpenLayers for a mapping service. In which I have several KML layers that are using KML feeds from server to populate data on the map. It currently plots: images / points / vector lines & shapes. But on these points it will not add a label with the value of the for the placemark in the KML.   Hi, Im using FCK Editor control instead a textarea element. I installed it without problems. But when i want to validate it with a Custom validator of ASP.Net 2.0, im not getting the result expected. But when it involved with advanced dynamic ajax control (like ajaxControlToolkit or Telerik controls) that have javascripts inside them This method of injecting the html code to the .InnerHtml property of div tag (for example) IS NOT WORKING , and I red about it that The browser need to load the script on load and after that it won't iterperate the scripts injectd via .InnerHtml. So I attached here example of delay load project (from encosia.com by dave ward) with my modification (look at DefaultPopup.aspx and beforePopup.aspx and AfterPopup.aspx) Which I modified the RssReader to show listview with popup items (which is implemented via ACT HoverMenuExtender ) So in the regular way the popup items are shown right , but on the delay load which is done by creating virtual page for rendering the html and injecting it to .InnerHtml property – This ISN'T WORKING. So my question is : is there a way to do delay loading for controls which include scripts lik ACT and Telerik and others? And for the ajax templates – if I need to inject advanced control to the page – how I do it with your approach? • Linq PredicateBuilder with conditional AND, OR and NOT filters.

  We have a project using LINQ to SQL, for which I need to rewrite a couple of search pages to allow the client to select whether they wish to perform an and or an or search. I though about redoing the LINQ queries using PredicateBuilder and have got this working pretty well I think. I effectively have a class containing my predicates, e.g.: internal static Expression<Func<Job, bool>> Description(string term) { return p => p.Description.Contains(term); } To perform the search i'm doing this (some code omitted for brevity): public Expression<Func<Job, bool>> ToLinqExpression() { var predicates = new List<Expression<Func<Job, bool>>>(); // build up predicates here if (SearchType == SearchType.And) { query = PredicateBuilder.True<Job>(); } else { query = PredicateBuilder.False<Job>(); } foreach (var predicate in predicates) { if (SearchType == SearchType.And) { query = query.And(predicate); } else { query = query.Or(predicate); } } return query; } While i'm reasonably happy with this, I have two concerns: The if/else blocks that evaluate a SearchType property feel like they could be a potential code smell. The client is now insisting on being able to perform 'and not' / 'or not' searches. To address point 2, I think I could do this by simply rewriting my expressions, e.g.: internal static Expression<Func<Job, bool>> Description(string term, bool invert) { if (invert) { return p => !p.Description.Contains(term); } else { return p => p.Description.Contains(term); } } However this feels like a bit of a kludge, which usually means there's a better solution out there. Can anyone recommend how this could be improved? I'm aware of dynamic LINQ, but I don't really want to lose LINQ's strong typing.
