• How to add nvidia drivers after previous failure with linux mint?

  Before today, I had perfectly good drivers from nvidia for my linux mint (15) box. I decided to update it because my performance in TF2 is less than stellar, and then things went south. I used synaptic to install nvidia-331 and then rebooted, but when I selected Mint in GRUB I waited...and waited...and waited. Nothing happened, but the display stayed on (a completely black video was being output). So I went into recovery mode from GRUB, went to root access, and apt-get remove --purge nvidia*'d my way out of that mess, and installed nvidia-common. Now my performance in graphic intensive stuff (read: games, blender) sucks, so I've been through the same thing a few times trying to re-install nvidia-current. I just want to get it back how it was. • Ignoring GET parameters in Varnish VCL

  Okay: I've got a site set up which has some APIs we expose to developers, which are in the format /api/item.xml?type_ids=34,35,37&region_ids=1000002,1000003&key=SOMERANDOMALPHANUM In this URI, type_ids is always set, region_ids and key are optional. The important thing to note is that the key variable does not affect the content of the response. It is used for internal tracking of requests so we can identify people who make slow or otherwise unwanted requests. In Varnish, we have a VCL like this: if (req.http.host ~ "the-site-in-question.com") { if (req.url ~ "^/api/.+\.xml") { unset req.http.cookie; } } We just strip cookies out and let the backend do the rest as far as times are concerned (this is a hackaround since Rails/authlogic sends session cookies with API responses). At present though, any distinct developers are basically hitting different caches since &key=SOMEALPHANUM is considered as part of the Varnish hash for storage. This is obviously not a great solution and I'm trying to work out how to tell Varnish to ignore that part of the URI.

• Tape Supplier in Canada

  I'm not sure if it's kosher to ask.. but where can one purchase good quality / well priced backup tapes within Canada, online? I'm asking because my current vendor, DataWrite, has sent me bad tapes for the 3rd time in a row. I have no idea where they get their product but when I put an order in for 20 tapes and 2 cleaning tapes and I have to call them up 4 times over the next 2 weeks, I expect those tapes to work. Well, like I said, this is the 3rd batch that I'm sending back and we've been dealing with them exclusively for well over 5 years so I thought I'd ask the pool of knowledge. I'm currently looking for DAT72 tapes but soon will be looking for LTO-3 and LTO-4. Thank you

• silent failure while creating odbc data source

  I just got really confused trying to create an ODBC data source in Windows 2003 R2. I can create a connection to my chosen server (a MS SQL Server) on the "user DSN" tab, but when I try to do the same thing on the "system DSN tab", the process fails but without an error message. I am able to connect to the target database fine at the end of configuring a new data source, but when I click OK, the data source just isn't there. No error message, no sign that anything went amiss, other than the lack of a new data source. Very annoying, as I had to repeat the process a few times to make sure I wasn't crazy. Anybody got any hints? I suspect it is a permission problem of some sort but since there is no error message, I don't know where to start.

• Anytime I upload something, my internet slows down extremely. What can I do?

  Title says it all. For a bit more info though: Basically, I have Time Warner cable internet. My speeds maintain a stable 2Mbit/s upload and 20Mbit/s download with average ping times around 30ms. This crazy thing happens though when I upload anything. I went to upload a 200M file to my server today through sftp and my internet completely choked up. I speed tested it during this upload and my ping time was around 800ms, download speeds of 0.2Mbit/s and Upload speeds of 0.3Mbit/s. Note, I wasn't downloading anything during this time either. It is just straight upload. What is it that causes this phenomenon? My router is OpenBSD. Is there anything I could set up to fix this problem(by queues or some such), or is this a problem with cable internet?

• "Show hidden files" option is not working

  OK, I know this is the very basic thing that goes with Windows, but I am asking it here in search of answer. I put my pendrive and it autoruns. This changed the show hidden files option off, I mean I am not able to see my hidden files as it is not applying the changes. What is the registry file that has modified? I have scanned my computer using 4 antivirus programs. BitDefender found and deleted something in temperary folder. The rest didn't showed anything. I have encountered this problem a few more times but this time I don't want to format it ;-)

  I know that this is the exact oposite of the question most people ask as it is a royal pain to remove. I hope this isn't flagged as me wanting to infect other people. I know my mom almost installed it but it was running firefox so she unknowingly downloaded it 10 times but didn't install it. I have since deleted those files and have been wondering what to look out for on sites that carry the virus. I'd like to test out AV software in a VM environment. • Stripping a spike from rrdtool when removespike.pl doesn't find any

  I know when rrdtool graphs (using rrdtool 1.4) network traffic and the host is restarted a spike is a pretty normal thing to see. In the past I've just run that removespike.pl script that is hosted by the author and it strips the spike and I'm good to go. The last few times I've rebooted removespike.pl finds no spikes, but it's obvious that there are spikes. So my question is, how can I easily remove these spikes and get my graphs usable again? Right now it's so skewed it's meaningless.

  hi we lately purchase few dell servers all of them from Rxxx series couple of R410 and R710 the OS we used on those servers is: CentOS 5.4 we're getting very weird error messages and we lost network connectivity couple of times (restarting the network interface was needed to fix it) the messages we're getting are: Message from syslogd@ at Wed Nov 18 12:07:08 2009 ... servername kernel: Uhhuh. NMI received for unknown reason 20. Message from syslogd@ at Wed Nov 18 12:07:08 2009 ... servername kernel: Do you have a strange power saving mode enabled? • Postgres error messages in Apache error log

  I'm running Apache 2.2, PHP 5.2, and Postgres 8.2 on Windows, and I'm seeing something funky in Apache's error.log file. Occasionally, I'll see the message "row number -1 is out of range 0..-1" pop up over and over. Unlike all the other lines in that log file, there's no timestamp or log level. Just that exact string. Googling around, it appears that message is, character for character, a common Postgres error message, but is not an Apache error. I've seen it happen multiple times, and on several different servers. I can't seem to reproduce it, though. I've tried throwing all sorts of error ridden database queries and result set inquiries at Postgres via PHP, and none of them seem to trigger that line being written to the log file. Is it possible for Postgres errors to be ending up in my Apache log file, and if so, how? What would trigger an error message like that? Thanks!

• NET VIEW occasionally does not show all computers

  I am having an issue on my workstation, where periodically the NET VIEW command does not seem to work. Most times, NET VIEW will return a list of all the machines connected to our domain. Occasionally, it will only list 4 or 5 (instead of the usual 200+). The only way I've found to remedy it is by rebooting my machine. I am running Windows XP Pro, the Domain Controller is running Server 2003. What could be causing this, and how can I remedy it? Thanks!

  I am using Monit 5.3.2 in my Linux box. I am monitoring some services using Monit. I want to run a script before the running the restart command. I have used the below conditions for the same. if does not exist for 2 times within 3 cycles then exec "/bin/bash -c 'touch /tmp/somefile'" as uid someuser and gid someuser if does not exist for 10 cycles then restart Unfortunately only the restart action is getting executed. Can anyone please help me to identify why the first rule is not executed ? Is there are any other way to solve the problem ?

• Engineers are using explosives to remove hard rock outside our office building. What countermeasures should we take?

  Our building is located approx. 100 meters from the explosive charges. They happen several times per day, and really shake the entire building a lot. This is going to go on for many days and the blasts are supposed to get stronger. Our server rooms are nothing fancy; one of them has all the racks on hard concrete while the other one has a raised floor (the one which allows the cables to go beneath it). Does anyone have any tips, countermeasures or best practices for us? Currently we are thinking of the following countermeasures: Daily report of the server rooms status lights (HD lights, power supplies and so on). • On boot firmware request for intel GMA 3100 chipset timing out

  I am currently in the process of installing a Gentoo linux box with a Vanilla 2.6.29-r5 kernel with gentoo-xen-kernel patches in order to run the Xen Hypervisor. After rebooting with the new kernel, the booting process seemed to hang on: [ 0.863005] platform microcode: firmware: requesting intel-ucode/06-0f-07 [ 60.863442] Microcode Update Driver: v2.00-xen <[email protected]>, Peter Oruba Apparently the firmware request times out after 60 seconds (/sys/class/firmware/timeout) and booting just continues. I have done some research and have found that on RHEL-4 this problem was related to the mount of /sys changed and the firmware.agent hotplug script couldn't parse the line correctly. However I am having some difficulty tracking down how to fix this on Gentoo. Any and all ideas are greatly appreciated! Thanks

• Apps crashing - Android 4.3 in VirtualBox

  Performance and stability problem with Android 4.3 in VM. Tried with x64 and x86 System. VirtualBox V4.3.2 in use. Android could be installed on x86 only. But there it seems to be successfully, using the "Linux 2.2" template on VirtualBox. 1024MB RAM and 2GB Harddisk defined. Some times Android browser is crashing and closing. In all cases stuff like "Skype" and "Plats vs Zombies" does never startup after installing. Crashes directly. "Plats vs Zombies 2" is not able to install. Is there any way of gettings such stuff work?

• Mac OSX: Adobe Flash player 10.1.85.3 text issue

  Running Flash Player 10.1.85.3. on OS-X 10.6.4 I've run into a very strange issue with Adobe/Macromedia Flash. Text in dialogs sometimes is not displayed, and the containing boxes are distorted. It occurs in all browsers. This is best demonstrated on YouTube in some of their ads, as well as in Google Analytics overlays on graphs. You can see the issue here: As you can see, where I have moused over the high point, there should be a dialog with some text, but instead it is quite broken. I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling the Flash plugin several times, reinstalling Google Chrome, validating my fonts with FontBook (removed all dupes/ fonts with warnings). Also as a last resort I checked/ repaired perms on my disk. What should I do?

  I have few computers running. I want to get the average CPU usage of these computers and plot it as a graph. So I've collected CPU usage in regular intervals in these machines. So for each computer I have a data set of time and CPU usage. But the times at which CPU measurements are taken in different machines are not in sync. For example in 1st machine CPU may be measured in time 1, 5, 9. In the second machine CPU may be measured in time 2, 5, 8. I want to get an average data series from these different data sets.   What if your cell phone didn’t come with a battery? Imagine, instead, if the material from which your phone was built was a battery. The promise of strong load-bearing materials that can also work as batteries represents something of a holy grail for engineers. And in a letter published online in Nano Letters last week, a team of researchers from Vanderbilt University describes what it says is a breakthrough in turning that dream into an electrocharged reality. The researchers etched nanopores into silicon layers, which were infused with a polyethylene oxide-ionic liquid composite and coated with an atomically thin layer of carbon. In doing so, they created small but strong supercapacitor battery systems, which stored electricity in a solid electrolyte, instead of using corrosive chemical liquids found in traditional batteries. These supercapacitors could store and release about 98 percent of the energy that was used to charge them, and they held onto their charges even as they were squashed and stretched at pressures up to 44 pounds per square inch. Small pieces of them were even strong enough to hang a laptop from—a big, fat Dell, no less. Although the supercapacitors resemble small charcoal wafers, they could theoretically be molded into just about any shape, including a cell phone’s casing or the chassis of a sedan. They could also be charged—and evacuated of their charge—in less time than is the case for traditional batteries. “We’ve demonstrated, for the first time, the simple proof-of-concept that this can be done,” says Cary Pint, an assistant professor in the university’s mechanical engineering department and one of the authors of the new paper. “Now we can extend this to all kinds of different materials systems to make practical composites with materials specifically tailored to a host of different types of applications. We see this as being just the tip of a very massive iceberg.” Pint says potential applications for such materials would go well beyond “neat tech gadgets,” eventually becoming a “transformational technology” in everything from rocket ships to sedans to home building materials. “These types of systems could range in size from electric powered aircraft all the way down to little tiny flying robots, where adding an extra on-board battery inhibits the potential capability of the system,” Pint says. And they could help the world shift to the intermittencies of renewable energy power grids, where powerful batteries are needed to help keep the lights on when the sun is down or when the wind is not blowing. “Using the materials that make up a home as the native platform for energy storage to complement intermittent resources could also open the door to improve the prospects for solar energy on the U.S. grid,” Pint says. “I personally believe that these types of multifunctional materials are critical to a sustainable electric grid system that integrates solar energy as a key power source.”

• Missing autochk program during boot

  I just resized a windows partition which involved shifting about 160GB to the left. After that it couldn't find the boot like normal so I ran the system repair tool like normal(I resize this partition a lot and each time I have to use the repair disk). But, this time, when I rebooted into the recovered 7 partition, it displayed the windows logo like normal but then flashed up autochk program not found -- skipping autocheck After that being on the screen for about 8 seconds, there was a flash of a bluescreen with white text and it rebooted. I have tried running the repair disk multiple times, but it returns and fixes the same problem each time, and the same thing happens on boot each time. Is there anything I can do to fix this short of reinstalling Windows? I have also ran two chkdsks from my vista partition with no errors reported and when viewing all the files on the drive everything seems to be in place.

• Dialog box in Adobe reader is scrambled

  I use win 7 and Adobe reader 11. After updating from ADobe reader 9 to 10 (automatically) I can´t see a proper dialog boxx when i print the PDF. EIther it har veryyyyy big letters or the text is missing in the Printing option box. I have tried to uninstall and reinstall several times, but there is no difference. I have also tried to download the sherife sans font. When I hade Adoobe reader 8, there was no problem. On an other computer I had the same problem, but I could resolve it by uninstalling and reinstallation Adobe reader. Rutred

  I have an Apache server running Debian. I am having this very strange situation where loading a page takes about 2 to 3 times longer to load over http than https. The primary use of the website is Magento, but I am seeing similar results with other things that we have loaded on the website. • Problems to export java home and to find or create .bashrc in Mac OS X 10.6

  Hello, I need to install a program for my studies and, this program, need java to run. When I try to perform the installation say that cannot find the JDK; since the JDK is already installed by default in mac, the problem is export the java home. I´ve try a lot and I cant do it! I know that I have to add a line in a .bashrc file (or .profile, or .bash_profile) I´ve created all those files, at different times but nothing... I´m a new mac user, but I use Linux too and I dont know what happened, I just need to export java home to perform my work... and is really necessary for me to add environment variables too. • kernel: journal commit I/O error

  I am having some problems with a Dell 1950 server. I am installing RHEL 4.6 along with Oracle and some other software on here. I am randomly getting an error message saying "kernel: journal commit I/O error" on my ssh session and on the monitor I have hooked up to the server I see an error scrolling by that says "EXT3-fs error (device sda5) in start_transaction: Journal has aborted." It has happened several times but never at the same point during the install. Actually, this last time the system was up and running and I was just trying to import a database into oracle. This has happened on several hard drives, so I'm pretty sure that is not the problem. This makes me think the raid controller is going bad. What do you guys think? ** UPDATE ** Pretty sure it was a bad hard drive. I threw another drive in the server and it's been running for about 48 hours with out problems.

• Close all Mac Terminal windows, but the one running a script

  I am trying to create a shell script that runs a python simulation programing in 4 terminal windows. I have the script that launches the program four times in four separate terminal windows(total of 5 windows, 4 for the python programs, and one to control the other terminal windows). I want to now create a script that I can run in the control terminal window that closes and kills the programs of the other four terminal windows, but still have the control one open. What I have so far is something like this #!/bin/sh osascript -e 'tell app "Terminal" do script "killall python" end tell' osascript -e 'tell app "Terminal" to quit' osascript -e 'tell app "Terminal" to open' The problem is that the last line doesn't work because it closes all the windows including the one the script is executing in. I am not really familiar with shell or apple script so any help would be welcomed. I posted on Stack, but I think this might be a better place for an automation type question. Thanks
