• Unable to write into character device file in Ubuntu

  I just written a linux character driver. I created one character device file named X. I can see that file in /dev folder. Now I want to do some read/write operation into this file. I opened the filed in VI editor and write some text into it. I used :wq and exited. It didn't show any error. Now when I do cat on that same file I am not able to see any content. I tried it several times. The same situation. Please let me know If I am doing something wrong....

• Looping through a batch file only if the response is "everything is okay"

  I have a batch file that loops through the contents of a directory and compresses the files in the directory as follows; for %%a in (c:\data\*.*) do if "%%~xa" == "" "C:\Program Files\7-Zip\7za.exe" a -tzip -mx9 "%%a.zip" "%%a" Seeing that I am using 7zip to compress the file, it returns the message "everything is okay" if it has successfully compressed the file and it then moves onto the next file in any. What I would like to do is the following; Only move to the next file if the response is "everything is okay" If the response is anything but "everything is okay", the error is logged Since an error has occurred, it attempts to compress the file again Once when it has succeeded i.e. "everything is okay" it goes to the next file Steps 3 & 4 only occur a maximum of 3 times before it gives up and moves onto the next file. How can I achieve this?

• Firefox: This connection is untrusted + Behind corporate firewall

  I've seen some similar issues strewn throughout Google's results about this, but none seem to be corporate-specific. I continually get the 'This connection is untrusted' screen every time I attempt to log into a secure site...for instance Gmail. This is pretty annoying as sometimes I have to go through the process of adding the exception two or three times before it finally lets me into Gmail. I am behind a corporate firewall, going through an internal proxy server to get to the Internet, so there is no possibility for me to update the firewall...etc. Does anybody know a way around this? Can it simply be disabled (and is that safe)? EDIT I'm going to reopen this question with a bit of new information. I have been using Google Chrome lately until today, and one thing that I noticed was that I never had this issue when using either Chrome or Internet Explorer. Is there something that these other browsers do that I need to manually do in FF?

• Unpredictable MBP wake from sleep in Windows 7 Boot Camp

  I have a Macbook Pro with Windows 7 installed in Boot Camp. I have serious problems with waking from sleep and not sure why. I have the default Balanced power plan selected. Many times when I close the laptop and leave it for more than just a few minutes, when I open it back up, it does not awake immediately. I often end up having to press the power button just to get it to wake up. Sometimes this causes it to wake up in Windows mode, sometimes it reboots completely, sometimes the battery has been drained and Windows has to restart (and gives me the Windows did not shut down properly message). Is this a common problem with Boot Camp? Can I fix it?

• File Saving Sometimes Fails

  When I attempt to save files, it sometimes (randomly) fails. In Blender, I sometimes get "Version Backup Failed: File Saved With @". In Visual Studio, building sometimes fails with an error message indicating that the target file/exe cannot be overwritten. If I wait a bit, I can save fine. It's almost as if programs are taking an abnormal amount of time to 'let go' of the files. What could be causing this behaviour? This seems to be caused by Windows Live Mesh monitoring my files, and locking them whenever it uploads the new versions (BAD considering the amount of times I save my files, even redundantly). Any suggestions to work around this behaviour? Should I switch to a better service to sync my files?

• Error burning DVD using Devede on Ubuntu 9.04

  I'm trying to burn a DVD in DeVeDe under ubuntu -- on my computer it's already in DVD format (a VIDEO_TS folder) but when I try and drag it into DeVeDe it says "Some files weren't video files. None added." From looking at it, all the files look like they belong there, just from doing this a few times already and seeing all the files contained in a DVD. The file extensions in the folder are: VOB BUP IFO and the files are all named like VTS_02_1.VOB. I have tried excluding the IFO files when dragging them into DeVeDe but get the same error. Is the problem in the types of files in the DVD data or is the DVD corrupt?

• Keyboard Navigation of File Open Dialog in Windows 7

  In Windows XP standard File - Open dialog, the top has a "Look In" box. I can press Alt+I to drop down a tree of the disks folders and easily navigate to other folders or network shares. In Windows 7, I can't seem to navigate the File - Open dialog as easily. The best I've been able to muster is to tab 5 times (in Excel 2007, but I assume it's a windows standard), then use arrow keys or use Alt+arrow keys like a browser to get around. It's simply not as good because I can't see the whole tree at once. Is there a way to see the whole folder tree? If not, do you have any other tips for keyboard navigation of the file open dialog in Windows 7?

• Fixing striped printing from inkjet printer

  My Canon IP3000 printer recently started having problems with the black ink. Anything printed in black comes out striped, alternating between dark and light. An example is below. I've tried the following: Running the printer utility's head cleaning and "deep cleaning" a few times Running the utility's head alignment Replacing the ink cartridge with a new one Removing the print head and cleaning the bottom with denatured alcohol Anything else I can try before throwing this thing away? I'm considering buying a replacement print head, but is this likely to be solved by replacing the head?

• Moving my bcd from HDD to SSD - Windows 7

  I have windows 7 installed on my SSD, but the /boot/ and bootmgr are on my hard-drive. I want to move them to my SSD for faster booting times. So i figured that I can fix the problem using the Windows startup repair tool. I made a bootable windows 7 flash drive, and ran Windows startup repair. However, it exits with an error. I also can't see my OS in the list of installed OSs. I then tried fixing via the command prompt with bootrec /fixmbr, bootrec /fixboot, bootrec /rebuildbcd. Bootrec /rebuildbcd finds the OS, but gives me the error "The requested system device cannot be found" when i try fixing it. Does anyone know why this is failing? I read somewhere that the Windows Repair environment doesn't support a flash drive, which is why I'm getting that error. Is this true? Unforunately my dvd drive is playing up so I can't use it to test this.

• Could not Upload file in network mapped drive using asp.net/vb.net

  I have tried several times to upload file remotely to a mapped network drive, but it is raising an exception: Could not find a part of the path 'X:\test\testing.wav'. I read through various internet /blog/ Microsoft help sites, but I still don't know what is wrong. Does anyone know what is causing this problem and how I can correct it? It works fine when I am uploading to a local drive as a test. It is also working When I am running the code from the development server, but if I try with published code, then it fails. :(

  On windows, when I plugged in the usb connector, to the device was recognized as a mass storage device and installed all the drivers, to my computer, then the device, automatically restarted and started behaving like a modem, I'm writing this post, using the same modem, through windows... On linux mint (debian kernel, similar to ubuntu 8.10), the device is recognized as a mass storage device, some times, but, has no programs, useful for linux... When I use the modem on windows and restart the computer and login to linux, the device shows up as "not yet configured" in the terminal command "lsusb"... I googled a lot for solutions, tried many things, atlast, configured it and run the command "wvdial". But, get the error, that the modem is not responding, at last ! :'( Please help me out... Many more people are facing this problem, as I could discover, when I googled for it. this is the website address of huawei, the company of my modem... • How many users are "many users"?

  I need to find a solution for a website which is struggling under load. The site gets ~500 simultaneous connections during peak time, and counts around 42k hits per day. It's a wordpress based site bridged with a vbulletin forum with a lot of contents and a fairly complex structure which makes intensive use of the database. I already implemented code level full page caching (without this the server just crashes), and configured all other caching directives as well as combining css files and the like to limit http requests as much as possible. I need to understand if there is more that can be done via software or if the load is just too much for the server to handle and it needs to be upgraded, because the server goes down occasionally during peak times. Can't access the server now, but it's a dedicated CentOS machine (I think 4GB ram, can't say what CPU) running apache/mysql. So back to the main question: how can I know when the users are just too many?

• Screen gets stuck in a dim setting after waking up

  I've got a laptop that I recently upgraded from Vista to Windows 7. It works a lot better now for a lot of things, but there's one problem I've had happen a few times that never happened under Vista. When I put the system to sleep, then occasionally when I wake it up again, for no apparent reason, the screen's dim. Sometimes it's as if half the backlighting was turned off, and sometimes it's as if all the backlighting was turned off, all except for the mouse pointer, which remains as bright white as ever. Trying to change the screen's brightness does nothing, but rebooting fixes this. Has anyone else seen this? Any ideas on what's causing it or how to make it stop happening?

• Monitoring CPU Usage Over the Course of a Day?

  Are there any apps I an install on client machines that will generate a report for me what app used what % of the CPU. We have some machines that are running, at times, VERY slowly. The machine will run really poorly then boom, back up to full speed. There isn't usually enough time to check Task Manager real quickly to see what is running, not to mention the majority of the time there are people using the computer that don't know what the Task Manager is. ;) It would be really nice to take a look at some logs and see if, maybe, the anti virus is randomly taking alot of CPU for stretches of time. Or another application. Thanks! EDIT: This is for Windows XP. Sorry for the oversight. :)

• Fix a tomcat6 error message "/bin/bash already running" when starting tomcat?

  I have a Ubuntu 10.04 machine that has tomcat6 on it. When I start tomcat6 with /etc/init.d/tomcat6 start I get * Starting Tomcat servlet engine tomcat6 /bin/bash already running. and the server fails to start. Unfortunately, there is nothing in /var/log/tomcat/catalina.out to help debug the issue. With some cleverly placed echo statements it seems to be the line from /etc/init.d/tomcat6: start-stop-daemon --start -u "$TOMCAT6_USER" -g "$TOMCAT6_GROUP" \ -c "$TOMCAT6_USER" -d "$CATALINA_TMPDIR" \ -x /bin/bash -- -c "$AUTHBIND_COMMAND $TOMCAT_SH" The only thing I've changed in this script is TOMCAT6_USER=root. In servers.xml, the only thing I've changed is <Connector port="80" protocol="HTTP/1.1" from port 8080. I have tried reinstalling the package by first removing everything sudo apt-get --purge remove tomacat6 and then sudo apt-get install tomcat6 but this has not solved the issue. I have also restarted the server multiple times in hopes of some magic. Everything was working until I restarted my server. Any ideas?

• Windows 2008 DHCP service fails - "...failed to see a directory server for authorization."

  I have a small environment running Windows 2008 R2 where the DHCP service on the domain controller fails every two weeks. The most-visible error is Event ID 1059 and the Event Viewer message is: "The DHCP service failed to see a directory server for authorization." The setup features two domain controller and the usual services and roles (file, print, Exchange). Restarting the service fails for a variety of reasons. I've had the following messages at different times: "Not enough storage is available to complete this operation". "Unable to determine the DHCP Server version for the Server 192.168.x.x" "The DHCP service has detected that it is running on a DC and has no credentials configured for use with Dynamic DNS registrations initiated by the DHCP service." A reboot of the domain controller resolves the issue for ~2 weeks. The systems are virtualized and there are no network connectivity issues. Any ideas what's happening here?

  Been searching for quite some time for a player that will cross fade correctly. What I mean by that, most players have the ability to start fading with a given time left of the song (ex:10 secs) While at times that can be fine, but is there software or a plugin for software that can tell the difference between a song that fades out, or a song that has a cold ending? So far the best one out there that I have tested is PCDJ, but I am sure there has to be something that can distinguish between endings of songs. Should add...this is for windows.   I have a file explorer shell extension called "Copy File Path" or "Copy Folder Path", depending on which pane I am in in file explorer, which copies the full path of a file or a folder to the clipboard. Because it's very handy for me, I use it many times during the day. To make it more productive, I would like to assign a function key to it instead of using the right mouse click context menu, looking for it in the menu (big menu because of many extensions) and selecting it. The way I want to use it is select the file with the mouse and hit the function key. Is there a utility or tool, tray taskmaybe, which can add this functionality to Windows?

• Attempting to ping RPC endpoint 6001/6004 (Exchange Information Store) on server on Exchange2010

  I have Exchange 2010 in hosting setup like: TMG 2010 as load balancer Exchange 2010 x 2 (CAS,MAILBOX,HUB on each server) AD1, AD2 machines File witness All people currently connect thru OWA or POP3/SMTP and that works fine. The problem is autodiscovery doesn't work and RPC in terms of setting up Outlook doesn't work too. It doesn't work if I am connected with VPN or not. The thing is it used to work. Before reinstall of my machine 2 days ago I was able to get mails successfully thru Outlook that was set up using autodiscovery (but I was getting reports setting up of new clients wasn't working - so not sure why my outlook continued to work). I used https://www.testexchangeconnectivity.com to track it down and basically the message is more or less this: Attempting to ping RPC endpoint 6004 (NSPI Proxy Interface) on server autodiscover.domain.pl. The attempt to ping the endpoint failed. Additional Details The RPC_S_SERVER_UNAVAILABLE error (0x6ba) was thrown by the RPC Runtime process. • dilog box keep asking for password

  I'm having the exact same problem. I am running Windows 7, Outlook 2007 (Office 2007 pro) and I'm connecting to our Exchange Server 2007 which is part of Small Business Server 2008 Outlook 2007 on a client keeps asking for the password to the remote access URL. If I simply click cancel it's OK for a few minutes. Entering the password and clicking the save PW box does no good. Sometimes clicking cancel results in another dilog box asking the same thing and I may have to click cancel several times to get it to go away for a while. Occasionally Outlook may actually go into a mode where it says it needs the password typed so I click the link which brings the dilog back but simply clicking cancel will make Outlook connect again. can anyone help me thanks

• How can I set a Windows user environment variable that takes effect for the current session?

  I am trying to set a Windows user environment variable and then launch an application via either batch file or a script. However, the environment variable is not set to the appropriate value until after the user logs off and logs back on. (I think a more accurate description would be that the new value is not available to the app until after the next logon.) Is there any way to set a variable in the user's environment so that it's immediately available? I'm doing this because this program's functionality can be controlled by environment variables, and users will need different functionality at different times. Because of license constraints I need to set this dynamically, if possible. Thanks, Graham

• How do I prevent IIS 8 from stopping idle ASP.NET applications?

  I have an asp.net application running on Windows 2012 in IIS 8 that has a very time consuming application start process (essentially the code running in the Application_Start() event can take up to 2 minutes). Thus I'd like to minimize the number of times the application is started so that the user can avoid a long wait. I've enabled Preload in the application settings, and I've set the Start Mode to AlwaysRunning in the application pool. Yet the application still ends after not being used for a while, resulting in a very long time for the first visit to the website after the application shuts down. Does anyone have any ideas on how I can prevent this? Thanks

• How can I access my music anywhere?

  So here's the idea: I use multiple computers on an almost daily basis. I would like to be able to access my entire music library from any of those computers through the Internet. Is there a service or perhaps some software that would allow me to host my music "in the cloud", or in some other way access it from a different computer? I've searched for something like this and the closest I've found is the Media Player application found in Opera Unite, but that requires my home computer to be turned on at all times, which is less than ideal. I'm willing to pay, but not so much that I could just rent a private server for a lower price. Thanks in advance.

• Server 2008 blue screen after login - no desktop

  I came into work today to find that our Windows Server 2008 used as a terminal server for the Thin Clients was not loading the users desktops. What I have found out is that when I login via Remote Desktop, after applying user settings, it gets to the stage of 'Preaparing your desktop', but then the screen just goes blue. I have tried rebooting several times with no luck, and logging in locally at the server with no luck. Does anyone have any suggestions? I do not think that it could be a virus attack as we run antivirus on the server with OpenDNS filtering. Yesterday a software restriction policy was set up to only allow programs in the following directories to run if that could be the problem, although it was working fine all day yesterday.   I'm looking for VIM replacement. My key points are: Extensible in sane language (such as Python, Ruby, or even Lua, after vimscript everything will do). Also GUI part should be extensible too, so no SublimeText2. GUI. Preferrably GTK+. Lightweight. I don't understand IDEs like Eclipse/NetBeans consuming up to 1G of RAM. File browser panel. Splits, tabs and windows. There should be ability to split views tabs infinite number of times (or while they fit to screen). VCS support (optional: especially Git) Snippets & autocompletion (not mandatory, but I would very love to have those) Any ideas?
