• RODBC string getting truncated

  Hi all, I am fetching data from MySql Server into R using RODBC. So in one column of the database is a character vector SELECT MAX(CHAR_LENGTH(column)) FROM reqtable; RETURNS 26566 Now I will show you an example how I am running into the problem `library(RODBC) con <- odbcConnect("mysqlcon") rslts <- as.numeric(sqlQuery(con, "SELECT CHAR_LENGTH(column) FROM reqtable LIMIT 10", as.is=TRUE)[,1]) ` returns > rslts [1] 62 31 17 103 30 741 28 73 25 357 where as rslts <- nchar(as.character(sqlQuery(con, "SELECT column FROM reqtable LIMIT 10", as.is=TRUE)[,1])) returns > rslts [1] 62 31 17 103 30 255 28 73 25 255 So strings with length 255 is getting truncated at 255. Is there a way I can get the full string. Thanks

  Hi all, I have this generic routine that I wrote that takes a list of sql strings and executes them against the database. Is there any way I can make this work faster? Typically it'll see maybe 200 inserts or deletes or updates at a time. Sometimes there is a mixture of updates, inserts and deletes. Would it be a good idea to separate the queries by type (i.e. group inserts together, then updates and then deletes)? I am running this against an ms access database and using vb.net 2005. • How to deal with large result sets with Linq to Entities?

  I have a fairly complex linq to entities query that I display on a website. It uses paging so I never pull down more than 50 records at a time for display. But I also want to give the user the option to export the full results to Excel or some other file format. My concern is that there could potentially be a large # of records all being loaded into memory at one time to do this. Is there a way to process a linq result set 1 record at a time like you could w/ a datareader so only 1 record is really being kept in memory at a time? I'd appreciate any help. Thanks

• Excel plugin: Finding a Chart's Source Data Number Format String

  I'm currently working on a plugin for excel (using VB.net--not VBA) that will attempt (among other things) to recognize the format of the source data of a chart and configure the chart's series' number format strings appropriately. That is, yearly data should always be two numbers, monthly data should always be a 3-letter month followed by a 2-digit year, etc. The goal is to have a uniform representation across all charts for monthly data, annual data, daily data, etc. My question is this: how do I find the number format string for the cells (or any cell that is part of that series, as I will be assuming all cells that make up a particular series have the same format) that represent the source data for the chart? Note: I can assume that the chart will always point to a range of cells (not, for example, an array of data).

• Remove only first instance of a character from a list of characters

  Hi All, Here's what I want to do. I have 2 strings and I want to determine if one string is a permutation of another. I was thinking to simply remove the characters from string A from string B to determine if any characters are left. If no, then it passes. However, I need to make sure that only 1 instance of each letter is removed (not all occurrences) unless there are multiple letters in the word. An example: String A: cant String B: connect Result: -o-nec- Experimenting with NSString and NSScanner has yielded no results so far.

  My app is playing a pretty complex animation. It's like a flipbook. What I do is: I have a huge loop with selectors, and after every delayed call the next one is called. Now someone calls the user and the device suddenly shows up this fat green status bar and maybe some big pick-up-the-phone-call overlay. Or: The alarm clock rings, and a big alert sheet appears in front of just about everything. It would be great to just pause the whole animation in case of ANY interruption. Probably I've also missed like 5 more possible interruptions. How are you doing that? How do you get notified for all interruptions and then call one single -stopEverything method?

• Where to put WPF specific code when using MVVM

  I'm just getting up to speed on MVVM, but all the examples I've seen so far are binding View controls to simple non-WPF specific data types such as strings and ints. However in our app I want to be able to set a button's border brush based on a number in the Model. At the moment, I translate the number into a brush in the ViewModel to keep the View XAML only, but is that right? I don't like putting WPF specific code in the ViewModel, but equally I don't like the idea of putting code-behind on my View panel. Which is the best way? Thanks

  I'm creating a ASP MVC application. And because of the complex authorization i'm trying to build my own login system. (So i'm not using asp membership providers, and related classes). Now i'm able to create new accounts in the database with hashed passwords. But how do i keep track that a user is logged in. Is generating a long random number and putting this with the userID in the database and cookie enough? Sorry for my rather bad english! Ty in advance :)

For example : If the input is entered b a c a d t The result should be : b a c d t in the exact state that the input entered. So, for sorting the array then checking couldn't work since I lost the original sequence. I was advised to use array of indices but I don't know how to do. So what is your advise to do that?

• Help! Obj-C/Iphone programming: extracting string from html text and reading off line by line

  hihi, I have this html text response from a particular website: <tr><td valign="top"><img src="/icons/image2.gif" alt="[IMG]"></td><td><a href="crsdsdfs2221.jpg">crash-2221.jpg</a></td><td align="right">14-Jun-2010 14:29 Notice for every line, there is this href=".__", which is an image file with random name and random format. I would like to extract that string within the inverted commas out so that i can append it into a URL path and download the image. I've been looking through this documentation from apple: http://developer.apple.com/mac/library/documentation/cocoa/conceptual/strings/Articles/SearchingStrings.html#//apple_ref/doc/uid/20000149-CJBBGBAI on String programming but couldn't find one that fits my bill. Also after reading it, what code can I use to ensure that I will be reading the next line the next time my function is called( because I want to download the next picture). Hope some kind soul can help me out, thanks!

  I am looking for a community moderated way of managing/eliminating spam and offensive content. Functionality similar to StackOverflow and many other sites seems like a good way to go. Although I'm sure this could greatly vary based on specific needs, I am curious about the backend mechanism/algorithm --that is, has anyone had success using something like "3 strikes and you're out" -- the flagged post is automatically closed/deleted after 3 reports by users with the required credentials. Would something like this likely be effective or would it require a more complex solution to ensure honesty and effectiveness. Any thoughts / experiences would be great

Checking all subtypes of Object wich qualify for serialization It seems I can't use Serializable for my List... I could use my own interface instead (something like AsyncDataInterface, wich implements the Serializable interface) but the fact is that my method will return a list custom objects AND basic objects (such as Strings, int....). So my questions are: Is it a standart behaviour? (I can't figure out why I can't use this interface in that case) Does anyone have a workaround for that kind of situation?

  I'm creating a prototype for a java web application. Frontend is a Swing-based java applet. Backend should be a type of web-service, that is called by applet. Backend should run inside a servlet container and should have its own security (username/password) database. I know, that Tomcat has its own user database (realm), but the app should have own. Web-services, in turn, carrying out app logic and database access (via Hibernate). I'm a newbie for a web development and I'm getting lost in a huge amount of the java web frameworks. Even just reading 'introduction' and 'getting started' documents takes a lot of time. So I need an advice which framework(s) are suitable for the task and not very complex for a quick start.   Hello I'm getting a bunch of weird html output in users messages e.g. \u0644\u064a\u0646\u0643 \u0627\u0644 \u0639\u0627\u0645\u0644 I assume their aribic characters decoded? How can I perhaps preg replace all these codes with something a little more useful? because search results are filled with pages and pages of this stuff Perhaps even display them as they're supposed to be? Any advice what to do with such strings and how to implement them appreciated.. Please keep in mind this stuff is mixed in been common language letters / numbers many thanks

• Custom constructors for models in Google App Engine (python)

  I'm getting back to programming for Google App Engine and I've found, in old, unused code, instances in which I wrote constructors for models. It seems like a good idea, but there's no mention of it online and I can't test to see if it works. Here's a contrived example, with no error-checking, etc.: class Dog(db.Model): name = db.StringProperty(required=True) breeds = db.StringListProperty() age = db.IntegerProperty(default=0) def __init__(self, name, breed_list, **kwargs): db.Model.__init__(**kwargs) self.name = name self.breeds = breed_list.split() rufus = Dog('Rufus', 'spaniel terrier labrador') rufus.put() The **kwargs are passed on to the Model constructor in case the model is constructed with a specified parent or key_name, or in case other properties (like age) are specified. This constructor differs from the default in that it requires that a name and breed_list be specified (although it can't ensure that they're strings), and it parses breed_list in a way that the default constructor could not. Is this a legitimate form of instantiation, or should I just use functions or static/class methods? And if it works, why aren't custom constructors used more often?

  This is a really basic regex question but since I can't seem to figure out why the match is failing in certain circumstances I figured I'd post it to see if anyone else can point out what I'm missing. I'm trying to pull out the 2 sets of digits from strings of the form: 12309123098_102938120938120938 1321312_103810312032123 123123123_10983094854905490 38293827_1293120938129308 I'm using the following code to process each string: if($string && $string =~ /^(\d)+_(\d)+$/) { if(IsInteger($1) && IsInteger($2)) { print "success ('$1','$2')"; } else { print "fail"; } } Where the IsInterger() function is as follows: sub IsInteger { my $integer = shift; if($integer && $integer =~ /^\d+$/) { return 1; } return; } This function seems to work most of the time but fails on the following for some reason: 1287123437_1268098784380 1287123437_1267589971660 Any ideas on why these fail while others succeed?   I've written an application in C++ that takes a complex binary file format and translates it into human-readable text. Having edited the text you can recompile it back into the binary file format. This would be more useful if the application's internal object model was scriptable. On Windows I'd expose the objects using COM or .Net but I want this to work on Linux. I could embed a scripting language but that's a fair bit of work, and limits users to the scripting language I choose. Ideally, I'm looking for some way of exposing a scriptable DOM from my application that is: Widely support in scripting languages (without writing language-specific wrappers) Cross-platform (but Linux support is most important) In-process (but this isn't essential)

• Is Classic ADO still viable for a mixed managed/unmanaged App?

  We have a complex architecture with much logic in unmanaged code that needs database access. Currently this is via ODBC drivers and MFC classes and we're considering the issues of migrating our abstraction layer to use ADO or ADO.Net. In the latter case we'd have to be pushing database logic back up into the .Net layer. I'm trying to decide if the pain of invoking the database via .Net callbacks is offset by the improvements in ADO.Net. The Wikipedia comparison was interesting although I'm not sure I believe all the points in the comparison table (eg: does ADO.Net always use XML to pass data?). A 2005 comparison shows ADO.Net performing dramatically faster. Microsoft's guide to ADO.Net for ADO programmers suggests we will gain much from going to ADO.Net especially the way that data is available in native (.Net) types rather than solely through OLEAutomation's Variant.

  When I'm trying to change the default Image of a Control on Windows Forms in Form Designer (no matter where on which control) I get this error: Error message: An item with the same key has already been added I tried to delete and recreate the Resources.resx file.. I assured that only 1 resx file with these keys exist.. (in fact that's my only resource file) but it still does not work. I have som strings in it and some images. That's all. Any idea?
