  How do YOU debug a Scala program? I mean YOU as in the person posting the Answer :) Please answer only from personal experience, not from stuff you've heard or read on the Internet. You should not believe everything you read on the Internet, especially tales of complex open-source software configurations that actually work :-) The are many Java tools which claim to support Scala in some way or another, but I have so far struck out in trying to get any one of them to actually let me set a breakpoint in Scala code and step through it. These are big, major open-source IDEs I'm talking about here. The main problem in getting a debugger to work seems to be the "version hell" with fast-changing IDEs, Plug-Ins, JDKs, and the Scala language itself. Hence, the more detailed re-statement of the question is appropriate: What is the exact version number of the IDE, Plug-In, JDK, Scala, and even Operating System, that you are successfully using? • XMLHttpRequest progressive download?

  Just for fun I was creating a JavaScript console for controlling my PC. It involves a small webserver that takes command strings and forwards those to the system using popen calls (to be more specific popen4 on a Ruby mongrel server). The stdout channels are redirected to the http response. The problem is that the response only arrives once the entire contents of stdout has been sent. This is ok for small commands, but not for a command like find / which lists all the files in the system. In such situations it would be nice to have the results shown progressively in the webview (just like in the regular terminal). I thought that using XMLHttpRequest synchronously might result in progressive downloading, but it doesn't seem so. Is there any way to make it work?

  Let's assume I want to send many messages between 2 programs made in java that use TCP sockets. I think the most convienient way is to send objects like: PrintStream ps = new PrintStream(s.getOutputStream()); ObjectOutputStream oos = new ObjectOutputStream(ps); some_kind_of_object_here; oos.writeObject(some_kind_of_object_here); ps.print(oos); I want to send, strings, numbers, HashMaps, boolean values How can I do this using fx 1 object that can store all that properties? I though about ArrayList that is serializable and we can put there everything but is not elegant way. I want to send different types of data because user can choose from a variety of options that server can do for it. Any advices?

• MS Access vs SQL Server and others ? Is it worth taking a db server when less than 2 Gb and only 20

  After my experiment with MSAccess vs MySQL which shows MS Access hugely overperforming Mysql odbc insert by a factor 1000% before I would do the same experiment with SQL Server I searched for some other's people and found this one: http://blog.nkadesign.com/2009/access-vs-sql-server-some-stats-part-1/ which says "As a side note, in this particular test, Access offers much better raw performance than SQL Server. In more complex scenarios it’s very likely that Access’ performance would degrade more than SQL Server, but it’s nice to see that Access isn’t a sloth." So is worth bother with some db server when data is less than 2 Gb and users are about 20 (knowing that MS Access theorically supports up to 255 concurrent users though practically it's around a dozen concurrent users only). Are there any real world studies that really compare MS Access with other db in these specific use case ? Because professionaly speaking I keep hearing people systematically recommend DB server from people who have never used Access just because they think DB Server can only perform better in every case which I used to think myself I confess.

  Hi all! WPF is great because there are many things to achieve own goals. By example, for what I understand, adorners can add some controls to a UI element, but I think that the same behavior can be achieved through a custom control that contains the additional element. So, my question is: when should I prefer adorners to a more complex (but I think, more flexible) custom control? Please consider that I'm extensively using MVVM pattern and I would like to bind commands to the additional element.   Hello, I have just started using Drools on a small project and now I need to write a rule a bit complex and I don't really know what's the best way to do it. I am applying this rule to a list of objects of the same type (this class have a property called numberOfExecutions). I need to check for each element of the list if the numberOfExecutions of that element is bigger than 5% of the total numberOfExecutions (the sum of numberOfExecutions of all the elements in the list). I could not think of a nice way to implement this in drools so far, do you have a suggestion?

  If I have a list of regular expressions, is there an easy way to determine that no two of them will both return a match for the same string? That is, the list is valid if and only if for all strings a maximum of one item in the list will match the entire string. It seems like this will be very hard (maybe impossible?) to prove definitively, but I can't seem to find any work on the subject. The reason I ask is that I am working on a tokenizer that accepts regexes, and I would like to ensure only one token at a time can match the head of the input.

• C++ MFC add combo box string item from a widget ID

  I've added a combo box in the gui editor in MSVC 2010 pro in my MFC project. I have a list of strings I am grabbing from an external source and want to add them to my combo box. I've searched for a while, and every post seems to suggest I need to use the CComboBox class, however, I have no idea how to get the class variable from the resource ID of the combobox element in the gui editor. In summary, how do I add a string to my combo box, either using a macro (like CB_ADDSTRING(RESOURCE_ID, "my string");) or using CComboBOx (something like CComboBox::GetObject(RESOURCE_ID)->AddString("blah");). I do not do much win32 api/mfc programming, and just started fiddling around with it.

  Hello developers Is there any way you can store the UI state to disk when a WPF form has been minimised. I have a complex GUI with few Tab Controls and it consumes quite a bit of memory which is kept allocated when the application is not active. I was hoping one of you may have got this working along the lines (or similar) Application Active User does work, plays with UI - enters some information in the text boxes and moves around the tabs User minimises the form to work with other applications On Minimise, Save the current state to the disk and dispose the root tabcontrol On Activiate, build the root tabcontrol from the disk and add to the controls collection Before I divein to do this, I thought it will help me if I ask this question here. • What's the best way to test SQL Server connection programmatically?

  I need to develop a single routine that will be fired each 5 minutes to check if a list of SQL Servers (10 to 12) are up and running. I can try to obtain a simple query in each one of the servers but this means that I have to create a table, view or stored procedure in every server, even if I use any already made SP I need to have a registered user in each server too. The servers are not in the same physical location so having those requirements would be a complex task. Is there a way to simply "ping" from C# one SQL Server? Thanks in advance!

  I have a project that uses PageMethods to call functions on the server. The server functions (written in C#) return the values as array of strings, without doing any kind of serialization and in the client side (from Js) the accessing of the return values is by using static variable called arguments. I found that sometimes for some users (cases are not repro) sometimes an exception occured "WebServiceFailedException the server method 'Foo' returned invalid data. the 'd' property is missing from JSON." Some searching on google I found that people are serializing the return values using DataContractJsonSerializer class and in js accessing the return value using one of the callback function Example: function OnRequestComplete(result, userContext, methodName) { var Person = eval('(' + result + ')'); alert(Person.Forename); alert(Person.Surname); } So is the first technique is correct? or what?

• Proper thread termination in multi-threaded C# application

  I have what I think is a rather complex problem. I have a C# application that utilizes a plug-in architecture using reflection. The application loads plug-in dlls and the user is able to enable/disable them. When a plug-in is enabled, the main app starts a thread to run the plug-in in. In many cases the plug-in may have multiple threads of its own. When I want to disable a plug-in I am calling Thread.Abort(). This seems to kill the initial thread that was created for the plug-in, but any additional threads that the plug-in created continue running. Is there a better way to stop all of the associated plug-in's threads along with the main thread? Thanks.

  When using the glossaries package in a LaTeX document I occasionally want to use a glossary entry as part of section or chapter title. For example: \section{\Glsentrytext{big}} This however results in an error. Trying to use \protect\Glsentrytext{} does not solve the the problem. Note that using the non-capitalized version (\glsentrytext) does not produce any problems. Does anyone know of a way to get this to work? I use the glossaries package occasionally as way to format specific strings in a consistent way. For example \gls{big} turns into 'beam-into-gas'. Obviously I could create two glossary entries, with and without caps, to achieve this and only include one in the final glossary. That is an ugly solution though.

• Making Django ignore string literals

  UPDATE: It turns out this is a deeper question than I thought at first glance - the issue is that python is replacing the string literals before they ever get to django. I will do more investigating and update this if I find a solution. I'm using django to work with LaTeX templates for report generation, and am running into a lot of problems with the way Django replaces parts of strings. Specficially, I've run into two problems where I try to insert a variable containing latex code. The first was that it would replace HTML characters, such as the less than symbol, with their HTML codes, which are of course gibberish to a LaTeX interpreter. I fixed this by setting the context to never autoescape, like so: c = Context(inputs) c.autoescape = False However, I still have my second issue, which is that Django replaces string literals with their corresponding characers, so a double backslash becomes \, and \b becomes a backspace. How can I force Django to leave these characters in place, so inputs['variable'] = '{\bf this is code} \\' won't get mangled when I use {{variable}} to reference it in the django template?

  Hypothetical: Let's say you are writing complex queries to a database and it is very important that the data you extracted is the correct result set (e.g., that you didn't mess up a JOIN by not using all the correct keys, and all the other things that can go wrong, et cetera). What would you rather use to do this? Would you write the query using Microsoft Access and its Design View, or would you write it in native SQL using a SQL IDE?   I have this JTable on my Swing app with the autoCreateRowSorter enabled. My table only has 3 columns, two strings and one int, it works well for all of them when I click the column headers. However, I'm looking for way to do it programatically. I wanted to set the "initial state" for this table. With the Windows look and feel, the column header (when sorted) has a little arrow showing the sort order. But at startup that doesn't show, I have to do one initial click. • Perl launched from Java takes forever

  I know this is an absolute shot in the dark, but we're absolutely perplexed. A perl (5.8.6) script run by Java (1.5) is taking more than an hour to complete. The same script, when run manually from the command line takes 12 minutes to complete. This is on a Linux host. Logging is the same in both cases and the script is run with the same parameters in both cases. The script does some complex stuff like Oracle DB access, some scp's, etc, but again, it does the exact same actions in both cases. We're stumped. Has anyone ever run into a similar situation? If not and if you were faced with the same situation, how would you consider debugging it?

  I am currently trying to sanitize some log files so they are in an easier format to read, and have been trying to use the gnu cut command, which works fairly well, although I cannot really think of a good way to remove the [INFO] part of the string logs/logs/server_1283258036.log:2010-08-31 23:06:51 [INFO] <NateMar> where?! logs/logs/server_1281904775.log:2010-08-15 22:59:53 [INFO] <BoonTheMoon> §b<BoonTheMoon>§ohhhhhh I would ultimately want to get the strings down to something that resembles the following 2010-08-31 23:06:51 <NateMar> where?! 2010-08-15 22:59:53 <BoonTheMoon> ohhhhhh how should I go about doing this? Have thought about using awk, although Im having a difficult time getting a grip on how that would work, so not sure how to set up something to do that, any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks!

  Hi! I am looking for a stand-alone, easy to use from C# code, template engine. What I want to do is create an html and xml files with placeholders for data, and fill them with data from my code. The engine needs to support loops (duplicating parts of the template form more that one object) and conditions (add parts of the template to the final html/xml only if some conditions are true). Can someone recommend a good option for me, and add a link to more-or-less such code sample, and some documentation about how to use the recommended component for my needs? • C++: Get char after space character instead or return carriage.

  Okay this is similar to my last question but what I ended up doing was way too complex for something as simple as this. I simply need to get a single character or number (I will know which of these I am receiving) from the console after I press space, instead of pressing enter. I'm sure there must be a way to have the terminal read input after a space instead of a '\n'. I need to read inputs from the console in which the succeeding data types will vary depending on what the first input is, and I think reading the entire line, parsing it into strings, then parsing some of those into ints is a bit unnecessary. So Is this actually not possible in C++ or have I just not found it yet?

• How to get ListView to grow to the size of content

  So I have a fairly complex activity the parent being a linearlayout with a table with some basic info and buttons. Then a couple listviews that the user can add items to. So these listviews grow more and more as the user uses the app. The problem I'm running into is the Linearlayout is bigger then the resolution of the screen and so it needs to scroll. So the scrolling doesn't work on the Listviews. I've tried playing with changing the layout_height of the listview and its child element with no success. Is there a way to make these couple listviews expand out to the amount of children? Or am I going about this all wrong? If so what other controls can I use? I'm open to any ideas. I really just don't know how to go about this. Thanks
