  • Merging many documents into one in Word 2007: How to make each one start on a new page?

    I have 31 documents I need to merge into one, using Word 2007 on Windows 7. I read that you can go to Insert - Object - Text from file and select the documents you need. I did that and it worked fine. The thing is, each document is right against the last one. Is there any way to make it so each document starts on a new page, other than manually inserting page breaks?   • How to force Chrome to make bookmarks the priority for auto-complete in the address bar?

    As it is right now, if I start typing, for instance, "dictionary" into the address bar, Chrome immediately returns a list of bookmarks, history, and related sites. However, the first and highlighted option is to search Google for "dictionary". I want Chrome to immediately recognize that I have a bookmark specifically named "Dictionary" that links to the site www.dictionary.com. But, that's the second choice, not the first. So I have to type a few letters, get auto-complete to suggest some sites, then key down to my bookmark item before pressing Enter. How annoying. Any way to cut the middle man and make my bookmark the top result?

  • How do I make a VMDK format virtual hard drive from a physical partition on a disk?

    I have a 320 GB HDD, which actually only has an 80 GB NTFS format partition which was being used by a Windows 7 system ... I want to create a VMDK format clone of this partition, so that I can use it with VMware .. However, tradition VMDK creation programs normally make a VMDK for an entire disk, whereas I just want to make a VMDK for the one 80 GB partition ... This is important because the other 240 GB on the physical source HDD is just unallocated area, and including that in a VMDK file is just a plain waste of space .. So how to make a VMDK file for a specific partition ? Any tool available for this ?

  • RAR Password recovery / hash extraction on OS X

    I'm running 10.6.2 and have been handed a couple of old files that need to be extracted. Old backups or finances or bills I believe. They are RAR files, and password protected. Is there a way to extract the hash from these files so I can feed it into John The Ripper or Cain and Abel? Edit I have downloaded cRARk, but unfortunately nothing I have (SimplyRAR, RAR Expander, The Unarchiver) will extract it without a password. Can someone verify that I'm crazy and there is no password on the Mac version?

  • Alternatives to Windows-builtin checkdisk utility for NTFS?

Now it's possible that if I left it overnight it would finally figure out how to progress, but are there any other programs with similar functionality I could use instead?

  • Computer crashes and won't start, LED indicator blinks slowly

    I have a MSI K8NGM2-FID motherboard coupled with a AMD Athlon 3700+ and an Antec TPII-550 power supply. The computer crashes at random times in operation, sometimes taking a while to crash, and sometimes crashing right after Windows XP shows the desktop after boot. The CPU temperature is always in the safe range, usually 30-33 degrees Celsius, and swapping the RAM has not done anything, so the crashes aren't cause by the RAM. What could be causing this? If the motherboard were fried, would the computer even boot at all? What causes inconsistent crashing of the computer? After the computer crashes, the LED power indicator blinks about once a second, and the computer does not respond to the power button. This behavior continues until the computer's power supply is completely removed.

  • Sync a specific folder of contacts to iPhone

    Is there a simple way to organize contacts in Outlook/Entourage and only have a subset of them synchronize with the iPhone over Exchange ActiveSync? Our CEO has thousands of contacts in his mailbox, but would prefer if only a small portion of them synched to his phone over the air... The iPhone's performance takes a huge hit keeping that massive dataset in order. If he could put some of the records in subfolders or something and only sync the top level, I think that would work for him. Does anyone know if this is possible?

  • Why do I need to set up Autologon values in registry twice in before it works and can I fix this?

    Background: As part an automated testing suite I am building, I need to set up Autologon on my virtual machines 'on demand'. By on demand, I mean that I don't want to necessarily pre-configure my VM or any snapshot to have Autologon set up already, for security reasons and also a huge business case. My solution so far: I'm copying a script to the guest machine and then using Sysinternals PsExec to execute it. The Problem: I see PsExec executes this properly and all the values are in the registry, however when I restart the machine, the user isn't automatically logged on...When I run this a second time then restart the machine, the user is finally logged on. A diff between the registry states shows that the first time I run this, it is missing both the "1" for AutoAdminLogon, and also the DefaultPassword key. The second time I execute it, these values are correctly intact as I intended. So, what is going on here? Is this expected? This post claims in the end that it really all just works (the problem was that a logoff script was setting off the values). Doesn't seem to work for me however. Note this seems unique to Windows 7, does not occur in Windows XP Also note that you don't need PsExec to recreate the issue - just modify the registry yourself EDIT/update: Login interactively and run script (so, not executing it remotely), logging off automatically logs me back in (so, it works) remotely execute the script in guest when I'm interactively logged in, logging off automatically logs me back in (so, it works) remotely execute the script in guest when with non-interactive session if I log in afterwards (so, interactive now) then back off, it logs me back in (so, it then works) EDIT/update 2: This only occurs for Win7x86, Win7x64, Win8x64. This does not occur for Windows XP

  • CentOS running inside VMware as WebServer times out on outside connection

    I have a CentOS machine running inside VMware, and I have got PHP and Apache set up on it, so if I open a browser (on the VM) and go to either localhost, or 192.168.0.3, I get a phpinfo page I made in /var/www/html/index.php, but, if on the host (Windows 7), in my browser I go to 192.168.0.3, it times out. I can ping the IP address from Windows and get a response, I just can't through the browser. Does anyone have any ideas what I need to do to get this working? This is my first time using a VM and I'm getting lost in the network settings.

  • Why is my router not routing?

    Starting a week and half ago my router stopped working with my cable modem. I went to sleep with it working and woke up with it not. I swapped in another router and am still having issues; I was gone for 10 days so now I'm back to trying to figure it out. While I was gone I left everything (cable modem, router, and computer) powered off. My setup: Comcast Ambit cable modem (from Comcast) Netgear WGR614 v4 router -- replaced with Linksys WRT54GS v1.1 Windows XP SP3 other computers, all currently unplugged The modem is using the firmware (ver 2.105.2001) provided by Comcast; hardware version 1.3 The Linksys router is using FW ver 4.71.4 (latest for this release of HW), factory defaults I am only using the wired connections; no wireless. I have swapped out all of the cat5 cable. If I plug my computer directly into the cable modem, I can ping by name or number. Everything works perfectly. If I plug my computer into the router and the router into the modem, I cannot access anything outside of my local network. This is the exact setup I've used for the past 5 years; there were no changes in the past year. Now here's the interesting part: I can log into the Linksys router and get status information from it; everything appears good. Using the Diagnostics, I can run ping and traceroute to any site on the internet. These work perfectly. From my computer, I can ping the router and the modem. However, I cannot ping anything on the internet by with name or number. If I plug in another computer, I can ping it successfully. I've included two transcripts below that show these two attempts. Addresses, DNS, gateways, etc. look good. I cannot access the internet through either router. I am at a loss here. Suggestions? Help!   • Convert raw IMAP server data into local folders, then upload partial dataset to new IMAP server?

    I am transitioning a company with about 30 IMAP accounts, loaded with data (about 77GB total), to a new email host. The majority of the data will be converted into a local archive and distributed to the company computers as a static reference data set. The server side folders the users absolutely cannot do without being on the server will be uploaded back to the new server. I used Mac OS X Mail (Snow Leopard 10.6.6) to download the content. I notice some messages have the name [xxx].partial.emlx, which leads me to believe they have not been downloaded all the way. I have root access to the mail server data and could download the IMAP server data via FTP. I am not sure what utility to use to convert that data to local Mail.app mailboxes. Furthermore, I would appreciate any input on the best way to upload a portion of the data to the new server (GoDaddy), preserving the original dates of the messages. edit OK - forget the raw server data. I found a script that apparently does pretty good archiving IMAP folders to local mbx files. My main quest now is to batch upload a mailbox hierarchy to the new IMAP server without having to start-stop and deal with similar issues. Anyone know of a utility (hopefully for OS X, but if not, I'll fire up my XP virtual system...) that would be capable of this? Thanks, M

  • Skype Optimization - Port Forwarding on a Router

    I was watching this Video which talked about using port-forwarding to optimize your LAN for skype calls. According to the video, as explained in the first couple of minutes in the video, the reason you would need optimization is because if the person your call has a firewall setup, your connection has to go-through a third-party computer to connect to them. I believe I stated this correct (maybe not). None the less, my question is this: do both parties on the call need to enable port forwarding to optimize skype, or just one party (person)?

    I just installed xampp on my mac os x. When I tried start mysql it display a message that mysql is already running on this computer. In order to start mysql stop first mysql.     I could do this easily with TextPad, then I got irritated with Textpad once I'd played with Notepad++. Now that I've removed Textpad: I want Notepad++ to take over the right-click Edit option in Explorer, and I want Notepad++ to come up when I type notepad in the command prompt. I know that Notepad++ has a shell extension that allows one to do right-click Edit in Notepad++. But my old right-click Edit link remains, and I keep finding myself clicking on it, only to be rewarded with an error.

    I have access to a dedicated server, and I would like to set up a Ventrilo server on it. I don't plan to profit from this Ventrilo server, but their website is quite vague about the legality of hosting a Ventrilo server (< 1000 slot, mind you) without paying for a license. Licensing looks fairly expensive considering I will never have more than a couple hundred slots in use. In summary: if I am hosting a Ventrilo server with less than a thousand slots, do I need to pay for a license?

  • Laptop Akku defekt? [closed]

    Ich habe ein großes Problem und zwar startet mein Laptop akku: akku Dell Inspiron 9400 Gut, dann machte ich ihn aber sofort "aus", ich klappte ihn eben zu, was heißt Energie sparen, er ist nicht heruntergefahren! Eine halbe Stunde später wollte mein Vater noch ran, er war dann auch ca. 5min und dann fuhr der Laptop wie gewöhnlich, wwenn er kein Akku mehr hat, heerunter. Dann wollten wir den Laptop wieder aufladen, doch es brannte nicht einmal die rote LED, was soviel heißt wie der Akku wird geladen. Und der Laptop (übrigens erst 7 Monate alt) kann man nicht startet! Nun meine Frage, hat das was mit dem Aufladekabel zu tun( dort brennt immer noch die grüne Lampe, was soviel heißt, wie dass aufjedenfall von der Seckdose Strom kommt) oder ist etwas am Laptop, bzw. ist er kaputt?

  • Coda 2 and SCP uploading files with the wrong permission

    Currently I have a basic Ubuntu server running a website. The website is for a few students learning HTML/PHP and each student has their own account with a symbolic link to the shared website folder. Since the students are working on the website together, each user needs to be able to modify all the files (index.html for example). So I created a Webdev group containing all of the students with the default umask of 0002 set in their .bashrc (This allows newly created files to be 774). The shared folder is owned by the group Webdev with a chmod g+s so that new files/folders also belong to the group Webdev. The problem is that the students are using an IDE (Coda 2) and when they create a new file or folder using the IDE the file has the permissions of 644 on the server (not group writable). However when I make a new file through connecting with Cyberduck (SFTP client) the file permissions are 664 (as they should be). So I don't understand why Coda would be any different. However, after some trial and error I believe that Coda is first creating the file on local disk and then uploading that file to the server. On a mac by default a newly created file is 644. When the client uploads a file that's already 644 it stays 644 on the server side (umask is kind of useless in this situation). I've also tried creating ACL permissions for that folder but an uploaded file from my mac via SCP doesn't get the default ACL permissions. In Coda there is an option to change file permissions on a transfer. However this option seems to apply a chmod to all files being uploaded or saved. When one of students is modifying a file created by someone else when they try to upload the file or save it Coda tries to also do a chmod but fails because that user isn't the owner of the file. My current solution is using bindfs... I mount the shared web folder and bindfs sets permissions and group ownership of newly created files. However, bindfs seems to be a bit slow and I'm sure there is a better solution. Even if the students ditched Coda 2 and used Mac vim with scp the newly created files on the server would behave the same (644) which is default on the mac. Other options... 1) Either I teach the students to use (ssh/chmod) with their IDE to change their own file permissions when uploading. 2) I make all the students' Macs have the default umask of 0002 which would upload files with the right permissions. 3) Write a corn script to fix the file permissions every 5 to 15 minutes... (This option I think is the worst if students are working together at the same time). Is there any way that I could make all files that are uploaded via SCP have the default file permissions of 664 even though the uploaded file has a lower permission? (After hours of searching I don't think this is possible) I guess a corn script is my best option for novice users.   • Run a pc on battery for 3 days?

    I am looking for a low power, low end pc able to run 24/7 without overheating and a way to support it in case of power failure. Power failures can be up to 72 hours. The pc dosen't need a monitor or keyboard. A modem must also be protected in case of power failure. When i say low end, i don't mean crap. The cpu needs to be x86 and have at least 1k cpu in this chart: http://www.cpubenchmark.net/index.php What's the best way to do this?

  • ubuntu automount: only mounting drives as root?

    I'm sharing the /mount dir with smb so users on my network can access use drives added to my linux box. Users are able to read files but not write, modify or delete files or directories. I'm using ubuntu 10.04 server edition with halevt installed for usb auto mounting. Afaik halevt is automounting the drives to /media/ but the drives are showing up as: drwxrwxr-x 1 root root 20480 2010-12-29 20:40 disk drwxrwxr-x 1 root root 24576 2010-12-21 17:20 Sparta mount gives me: /dev/sda1 on /boot type ext2 (rw) /dev/sdb1 on /media/disk type fuseblk (rw,nosuid,nodev,sync,allow_other,blksize=4096,default_permissions) /dev/sdc1 on /media/Sparta type fuseblk (rw,nosuid,nodev,sync,allow_other,blksize=4096,default_permissions) When I umount the drives, the folders /media/disk and /media/Sparta are both removed. I tried changing the permissions with chown to nobody:nogroup but it doesn't work (which I assume is because they are ntfs drives).
