• Flex ANT tasks can't find my assets

  I'm attempting to compile my Flex project with an ANT build script. One of my MXML components references an external XML data file, like this: <mx:XML id="treeData" source="assets/data/help.xml" /> When I build the project using Flex Builder, it compiles fine. However, when I try to compile it using ANT, I get the following error: Error: Problem finding external XML: assets/data/help.xml How come ANT isn't finding the XML file? Apparently it knows the source path otherwise it would not have found the component to begin with. I added the source path to the target anyway, but it doesn't seem to have made any difference: <source-path path-element="${SRC}" /> Any ideas?

• Strategy for storing and displaying form dropdown data for provinces, states, prefixes?

  I'm currently migrating from a class that stores lists of countries, states & provinces in the form of arrays to using Zend's Locale data in the form of ldml xml files. These ldml files provide localised lists of countries, currencies, languages - so I'm not exactly sure where I should store US States, ( Canadian Provinces ), Prefixes - I was thinking possibly just create a generic xml file and store it in the same directory as the ldml files, but having doubts because it wouldn't really be localised as I'd store it in English. Should I go with storing it in a generic xml file, or possibly update each of the locale files ( eg en.xml ) and append them? The latter is probably not worth the work, which is why I'm swaying towards just a general.xml or dropdown-data.xml. As for generating dropdown options, I suppose I could just say, grab all US states, append the array with Canadian provinces, and append that with an 'Other' option - does this seem like the right way to go about?

  I'm using ruby and I want to splice out a piece of a string that matches a regex (I think this is relatively easy, but I'm having difficulty) I have several thousand strings that look like this (to varying degrees) my_string = "adfa <b>weru</b> orua fklajdfqwieru ofaslkdfj alrjeowur woer woeriuwe <img src=\"/images/abcde_111-222-333/111-222-333.xml/blahblahblah.jpg\" />" I would like to splice out the /111-222-333.xml (the value of this changes from string to string, but suffice it to say is that I want to remove the piece between 2 forward slashes that contains something.xml. my hope was to find a match like this my_match = my_string.match(/\/.+?\.xml\//) but this actually captures "/b> orua fklajdfqwieru ofaslkdfj alrjeowur woer woeriuwe <img src=\"/images/abcde_111-222-333/111-222-333.xml/" I assumed that .+? would match what I am looking for, but it seems like it starts with the first forward slash that it finds (even though it's non-greedy) and then expands forward to the ".xml"). Any thoughts on what I'm doing wrong? TKS!!

• visual studio localhost server can't locate file

  i have a very simple web project. just one htm file with some javascript that opens a file test.xml. the xml file is in the same folder as the htm file (and it is part of the project) but when i start the page (f5 or ctrl-f5) it can't find the xml. it starts as http://localhost:50586/main.htm when i do a folder list the test.xml file is right there. opening the page directly in firefox works fine and the script can read and extract data from the xml. how can i convince the development server that the xml is indeed there?? or better still: how can i turn the development server off entirely? for my purposes simply opening the page in my browser is all i need and that should happen from within vs of course.

The problem with the former is that I couldn't integrate jstl with jsf code (to set jsf components attributes using jstl variables) and with the last approach, I'm facing the problem described above.I wouldn't like to create components in java (UIComponents). Any suggestions?

• JSON or YAML encoding in GWT/Java on both client and server

  I'm looking for a super simple JSON or YAML library (not particularly bothered which one) written in Java, and can be used in both GWT on the client, and in its original Java form on the server. What I'm trying to do is this: I have my models, which are shared between the client and the server, and these are the primary source of data interchange. I want to design the web service in between to be as simple as possible, and decided to take the RESTful approach. My problem is that I know our application will grow substantially in the future, and writing all the getters, setters, serialization, factories, etc. by hand fills me with absolute dread. So in order to avoid it, I decided to implement annotations to keep track of attributes on the models. The reason I can't just serialize everything directly, using GWT's own one, or one which works through reflection, is because we need a certain amount of logic going on in the serialization process. I.e. whether references to other models get serialized during the serialization of the original model, or whether an ID is just passed, and general simple things like that. I've then written an annotation processor to preprocess my shared models and generate an implementing class with all the getters, setters, serialization, lazy-loading, etc. To make a long story short, I need some type of simple YAML or JSON library, which allows me to encode and decode manually, so I can generate this code through my annotation processor. I have had a look around the interwebs, but every single one I ran into supported some reflection which, while all fine and dandy, make it pretty much useless for GWT. And in the case of GWT's own JSON library, it uses JSNI for speed purposes, making it useless server side. One solution I did think about involved writing writing two sets of serialization methods on the models, one for the client and one for the server, but I'd rather not do that. Also, I'm pretty new to GWT, and even though I have done a lot of Java, it was back in the 1.2 days, so it's a bit rusty. So if you think I'm going about this problem completely the wrong way, I'm open to suggestions.

• Hudson results one step behind

  I'm using the filesytem plugin for Hudson, and when a build happens it looks for new/modified files, copies them to the Workspace, runs tests using Rake, and then publishes those junit xml result files. However, the updated junit xml result files don't get pushed to the workspace until the next build. This means that when the publishing of the junit xml result files happens, it's always one step behind. And this means I need to run a build twice before the results show. The Rake task is creating the junit xml files in the project directory. I've tried outputting to the workspace directory, but it seems to make things worse and the results don't get published at all. Am I doing something fundamentally wrong here? Is there a simple way of getting those junit xml results pushed to the workspace so that the post-build "Publish JUnit test result report" actually runs against the newly created xml files?

What I'd like to do is use a query which, if there is no such element, returns, say "missing". How do I do this?

• Shell script syntax error: unexpected end of line

• Amazon Product Advertising API SOAP Namespace Changes

  About two months ago (twowards the end of February 2012 I think) Amazon decided to change the namespace of the Product Advertising API. The error that would come up was: <ItemSearchResponse > was not expected. If you've used the Amazon Product Advertising API you probably know that Amazon has made it a habit to break the services every few years or so and I guess last month was about the time for another one. Basically the service namespace of the document has been changed and responses from the service just failed outright even though the rest of the schema looks fine. Now I looked around for a while trying to find a recent update to the Product Advertising API - something semi-official looking but everything is dated around 2009. Really??? And it's not just .NET - the newest thing on the sample/APIs is dated early 2011 and a handful of 2010 samples. There are newer full APIs for the 'cloud' offerings, but the Product Advertising API apparently isn't part of that. After searching for quite a bit trying to trace this down myself and trying some of the newer samples (which also failed) I found an obscure forum post that describes the solution of getting past the namespace issue. FWIW, I've been using an old version of the Product Advertising API using the old Microsoft WSE3 services (pre-WCF), which provides some of the WS* security features required by the Amazon service. The fix for this code is to explicitly override the namespace declaration on each of the imported service method signatures. Amazon Services <rant> FWIW, I've not been impressed by Amazon's service offerings. While the services work well, their documentation and tool support is absolutely horrendous. I was recently working with a customer on an old AWS application and their old API had been completely removed with a new API that wasn't even a close match. One old API call resulted in requiring three different APIs to perform the same functionality. We had to re-write the entire piece from scratch essentially. The documentation was downright wrong, and incomplete and so scattered it was next to impossible to follow. The examples weren't examples at all - they're mockups of real service calls with fake data that didn't even provide everything that was required to make same service calls work. Additionally there appears to be just about no public support from Amazon, only peer support which is sparse at best - and getting a hold of somebody at Amazon, even for pay seems to be mythical task. It's a terrible business model they have going. I can't see why anybody would put themselves through this sort of customer and development experience. Sad really, but an experience we see more and more these days. • Tomcat running, catalina throwing exception

  So I have to preface that I'm not familiar with tomcat/catalina, but trying to troubleshoot this anyway. • bind a WPF datagrid to a datatable

  I have used the marvelous example posted at: http://www.codeproject.com/KB/WPF/WPFDataGridExamples.aspx to bind a WPF datagrid to a datatable. The source code below compiles fine; it even runs and displays the contents of the InfoWork datatable in the wpf datagrid. Hooray! But the WPF page with the datagrid will not display in the designer. I get an incomprehensible error instead on my design page which is shown at the end of this posting. I assume the designer is having some difficulty instantiating the dataview for display in the grid. How can I fix that? • Error displaying a WinForm in Design mode with a custom control on it.

  I have a UserControl that is part of a Class library. I reference this project from my solution. This adds a control from the referenced project to my toolbox. I add tghe control to a form. Everything looks good, I compile all and run. Perfect... But when I close the .frm with the control on it and re-open it, I get this error. The code continues to run. It may have something to do with namespaces. The original namespace was simply "Design" and this was ambiguous and conflicting so i decided to rename it. I think that's when my problems began. • Why is XmlSerializer so hard to use?

  I imagine to use XML serialization like this: class Foo { public Foo (string name) { Name1 = name; Name2 = name; } [XmlInclude] public string Name1 { get; private set; } [XmlInclude] private string Name2; } StreamWriter wr = new StreamWriter("path.xml"); new XmlSerializer<Foo>().Serialize (wr, new Foo ("me")); But this does not work at all: XmlSerializer is not generic. I have to cast from and to object on (de)serialization. Every property has to be fully public. Why aren't we just using Reflection to access private setters? Private fields cannot be serialized. I'd like to decorate private fields with an attribute to have XmlSerializer include them. Did I miss something and XmlSerializer is actually offering the described possibilities? Are there alternate serializers to XML that handle these cases more sophisticatedly? If not: We're in 2010 after all, and .NET has been around for many years. XML serialization is often used, totally standard and should be really easy to perform. Or is my understanding possibly wrong and XML serialization ought not to expose the described features for a good reason? (Feel free to adjust caption or tags. If this should be CW, please just drop a note.)
