• Is there really anything to gain with complex design? [duplicate]

  This question already has an answer here: What is enterprise software, exactly? 8 answers I've been working for a consulting firm for some time, with clients of various sizes, and I've seen web applications ranging in complexity from really simple: MVC Service Layer EF DB To really complex: MVC UoW DI / IoC Repository Service UI Tests Unit Tests Integration Tests But on both ends of the spectrum, the quality requirements are about the same. In simple projects, new devs / consultants can hop on, make changes, and contribute immediately, without having to wade through 6 layers of abstraction to understand what's going on, or risking misunderstanding some complex abstraction and costing down the line. In all cases, there was never a need to actually make code swappable or reusable - and the tests were never actually maintained past the first iteration because requirements changed, it was too time-consuming, deadlines, business pressure, etc etc. So if - in the end - testing and interfaces aren't used rapid development (read: cost-savings) is a priority the project's requirements will be changing a lot while in development ...would it be wrong to recommend a super-simple architecture, even to solve a complex problem, for an enterprise client? Is it complexity that defines enterprise solutions, or is it the reliability, # concurrent users, ease-of-maintenance, or all of the above? I know this is a very vague question, and any answer wouldn't apply to all cases, but I'm interested in hearing from devs / consultants that have been in the business for a while and that have worked with these varying degrees of complexity, to hear if the cool-but-expensive abstractions are worth the overall cost, at least while the project is in development.

  I have seen many of what is called 'private servers' mmorpg (multiplayer online games), which uses stolen sources,modified executable, clients and server. People launch up their own server using VPS or dedicated server and distribute online service among players disclaiming it has educational purposes only, saying they are studying the game engine and selling items for players disclaming it as 'donations', so it seems like they are getting donations to keep studying. We all know it's a comercial method. All of it is copyrighted material from enterprise ABCD. (ABCD = Fictional name, I'm not mentioning names). At their website they include the following: "Private Server XXXX" does not allow/support any conection to any company/organization associated with the game "XXXX". If you are anyway affiliated with enterprise "XXXXXXX", or any other company/organization associated with the game "XXXX" you may not view/open/read/execute/play/download any part of "Private Server XXXX" nor view "Private Server XXXX" website, if any company/organization requests you to investigate our website/server, you may not view "Private SERVER XXXX" or execute any action mentioned above. Any person caught disobeting this disclaimer will be punish to the fulleste extent of law. Can this guys get arrested? Do they disclaimer works? If I'm owner of enterprise X and I know people stole my source and are using them but they have such disclaimer I'm not allowed to investigate them?

• Basic is Best

  Fellow foodies will recognize the recent movement towards "farm-to-table" restaurants. These venues attempt to simplify their menus and source ingredients as close to the source as possible. I had the opportunity to dine at such a restaurant the other evening. I was gushing about the appetizer to my server when she described the preparation for the item and then punctuated her comments with "basic is best". I reminded my fellow enterprise architect diners there was an architecture lesson in that statement. They rolled their eyes and chuckled. But they also knew I was right. I'm reminded of Frederick Brooks' book The Mythical Man Month and his latest The Design of Design. The former must read book talks about complexity. But he refrains from damning all complexity. The world we live in and enterprises we strive to transform with enterprise architecture are complicated organisms, much like the human body. But sometimes a simple solution is the best approach. Fewer applications (think: portfolio rationalization). Fewer components. Fewer lines of code. Whatever level of abstraction you are working at, less is more. I'm reminded of the enterprise architecture principle "Control Technical Diversity". At one firm I created pithy catch phrases for each principles. I named this one "Less is More". But perhaps another variation is what my server said the other night, "Basic is Best".

I can communicate with the subnets on either site from the other and both are connected to the internet, however I need to ensure that all the traffic at my remote site goes through this VPN to my site here. I know that the web traffic is doing so as a "tracert" confirms this, but I need to ensure that all other network traffic is being directed over this VPN to my network here. • PHP suddenly failed after IIS update

  All my application pools were stopped this morning after I got to work. I can restart them, but when I try to load the website the app pool crashes again. Update: I've looked in the GAC as the error below suggests and it seems that the file is not there. How do I get it back? Update 2: I found a further error in the event log saying The Module name FastCgiModule path C:\WINDOWS\System32\inetsrv\iisfcgi.dll returned an error from registration. The data is the error. So following the information from here http://forums.iis.net/t/1153937.aspx I removed CGI and my sites are working again. This has fixed the initial problem, but now I don't have FastCGI so I'm fairly sure that PHP will no longer be working (I don't have any PHP at the moment to test). • Looking for Your Next Challenge...Don't Stretch Too Far

  In my role as a Recruiter at Oracle I receive a large number of resumes of people who are interested in working with us. People contact me for a number of reasons, it can be about a specific role that we may be hiring for or they may send me an email asking if there are any suitable roles for them. Sometimes when I speak to people we have similar roles available to the roles that they may actually be in now. Sometimes people are interested in making this type of sideways move if their motivation to change jobs is not necessarily that they are looking for increased responsibility or career advancement (example: money, redundancy, work environment). However there are times when after walking through a specific role with a candidate that they may say to me - "You know that is very similar to the role that I am doing now. I would not want to move unless my next role presents me with the next challenge in my career". This is a far statement - if a person is looking to change jobs for the next step in their career they should be looking at suitable opportunities that will address their need. In this instance a sideways step will not really present any new challenges or responsibilities. The main change would be the company they are working for. Candidates looking for a new role because they are looking to move up the ladder should be looking for a role that offers them the next level of responsibility. I think the best job changes for people who are looking for career advancement are the roles that stretch someone outside of their comfort zone but do not stretch them so much that they can't cope with the added responsibilities and pressure. In my head I often think of this example in the same context of an elastic band - you can stretch it, but only so much before it snaps. That is what you should be looking for - to be stretched but not so much that you snap. If you are for example in an individual contributor role and would like to move into a management role - you may not be quite ready to take on a role that is managing a large workforce or requires significant people management experience. While your intentions may be right, your lack of management experience may fit you outside of the scope of search to be successful this type of role. In this example you can move from an individual contributor role to a management role but it may need to be managing a smaller team rather than a larger team. While you are trying to make this transition you can try to pick up some responsibilities in your current role that would give you the skills and experience you need for your next role. Never be afraid to put your hand up to help on a new project or piece of work. You never know when that newly gained experience may come in handy in your career. • Software Architecture and Software Architecture Evaluation

  How many of us have worked at places where the concept of software architecture was ridiculed for wasting time and money? Even more ridiculous to them was the concept of evaluating software architecture. I think the next time that I am in this situation again, and I hope that I never am I will have to push for this methodology in the software development life cycle. I have spent way too many hours/days/months/years working poorly architected systems or systems that were just built ADHOC. This in software development must stop. I can understand why systems get like this due to overzealous sales staff, demanding management that wants everything yesterday, and project managers asking if things are done yet before the project has even started. But seriously, some time must be spent designing the applications that we write along with evaluating the architecture so that it will integrate will within the existing systems of an origination. If placed in this situation again, I will strive to gain buying from key players within the business, for example: Senior Software Engineers\Developers, Software Architects, Project Managers, Software Quality Assurance, Technical Services, Operations, and Finance in order for this idea to succeed with upper management. In order to convince these key players I will have to show them the benefits of architecture and even more benefits of evaluating software architecture on a system wide level. Benefits of Software Architecture Evaluation Places Stakeholders in the Same Room to Communicate Ensures Delivery of Detailed Quality Goals Prioritizes Conflicting Goals Requires Clear Explication Improves the Quality of Documentation Discovers Opportunities for Cross-Project Reuse Improves Architecture Practices Once I had key player buy in then and only then would I approach upper management about my plan regarding implementing the concept of software architecture and using evaluation to ensure that the software being designed is the proper architecture for the project. In addition to the benefits listed above I would also show upper management how much time is being wasted by not doing these evaluations. For example, if project X cost us Y amount, then why do we have several implementations in various forms of X and how much money and time could we have saved if we just reused the existing code base to give each system the same functionality that was already created? After this, I would mention what would happen if we had 50 instances of this situation? Then I would show them how the software architecture evaluation process would have prevented this and that the optimization could have leveraged its existing code base to increase the speed and quality of its development. I also can't seem to find out what the exact target table of the error "Column name 'Id' does not exist..." is. Has anyone every done this successfully? Am I missing something? Having this setup without conflict detection feels pretty useless... EDIT OK, so after some more research and setting up with different databases etc, I found out that the calculated 'Id' column of the Templates table is the culprit. I don't know why, but the replication doesn't seem to allow calculated columns (which are also primary key). It works now too, without the 'Id' column, and using the NodeId and LocalId as a combined PK. So now the question is, why isn't it allowed to have a calculated column as PK for replication with conflict detection?

• AdPrep logs show an LDAP error

  What I am trying to do is transition our domain from Server 2003 Enterprise x32 to Server 2008 R2 Enterprise x64. Here is what I have done thus far. The 2003 server is a physical machine, the 2008 server is a virtual machine Built a virtual machine that has Server 2008 R2 Enterprise x64 and joined it to the domain as a domain member On the 2003 DC, Raised Domain Functional Level and Forest Functional Level to Windows Server 2003 On the 2003 DC, went into the registry and navigated to HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\NTDS\Parameters and verified that the Schema Version is 30 On the 2003 DC, inserted the Windows Server 2008 Enterprise x32 Edition to copy over the adprep folder. This version is the only one that seemed to work On the 2003 DC, opened command prompt and went to adprep directory and ran adprep /forestprep , adprep /domainprep , and adprep /domainprep /gpprep On the 2008 server, Installed the Active Directory Domain Services role from Server Manager On the 2003 DC, went into the registry and navigated to HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\NTDS\Parameters and verified that the Schema Version is now 44 When I go to run dcpromo on the 2008 server, I get a message that says: "To install a domain controller into this Active Directory forest, you must first prepare using adprep /forestprep" I went back to the 2003 DC server and went through the adprep logs and I came across this: Adprep was unable to modify the security descriptor on object CN=DomainControllerAuthentication,CN=Certificate Templates,CN=Public Key Services,CN=Services,CN=Configuration,DC=xeroxtoledo,DC=com. [Status/Consequence] ADPREP was unable to merge the existing security descriptor with the new access control entry (ACE). [User Action] Check the log file ADPrep.log in the C:\WINDOWS\debug\adprep\logs\20100327143517 directory for more information. Adprep encountered an LDAP error. *Error code: 0x20. Server extended error code: 0x208d, Server error message: 0000208D: NameErr: DSID-031001CD, problem 2001 (NO_OBJECT), data 0, best match of: 'CN=Certificate Templates,CN=Public Key Services,CN=Services,CN=Configuration,DC=xeroxtoledo,DC=com* In fact, I got three of these errors. The LDAP error is consistent with all three, but the top part where it says "Adprep was unable to modify the security descriptor on object" are different. They are the following: CN=DomainControllerAuthentication,CN=Certificate Templates,CN=Public Key Services,CN=Services,CN=Configuration,DC=xeroxtoledo,DC=com. CN=DirectoryEmailReplication,CN=Certificate Templates,CN=Public Key Services,CN=Services,CN=Configuration,DC=xeroxtoledo,DC=com. CN=KerberosAuthentication,CN=Certificate Templates,CN=Public Key Services,CN=Services,CN=Configuration,DC=xeroxtoledo,DC=com. The credentials I am using on the 2008 server when running dcpromo is my domain account. My account is part of the domain and enterprise admin groups. I've tried various quick fixes that I've came across through Google searches that include: Disabling AntiVirus on current DCs Pointing DNS on PDC to point to itself Changing the Schema Update Allowed key to 1 and tried rerunning adprep - when rerunning adprep, told me that Forest-wide information has already been updated Disabled Windows Firewall on the Server 2008 box On the 2003 DC, went to Domain Controller Security Policy Local Policies User Rights Assignment and added Domain Admins to the Enable computer and user accounts to be trusted for delegation policy setting Both our PDC and BDC are Global Catalog Servers. Not sure if this matters or not I ran the command netdom query fsmo and verified that the FSMO role holder is the current 2003 PDC I ran dcdiag /v on the 2003 PDC and the only thing that failed was Services. Dnscache Service is stopped on the PDC I even went as far as deleting the virtual machine and recreating it from scratch - no avail... Help :(
