• Strange Photoshop Problem: Can not select, zoom, paint, option button 'locked'

  I have a very strange problem with Photoshop. I can not use any of the tools, since the cursor appears 'locked'. If I select v on my keyboard, it goes to the zoom tool, but the cursor does not change. If I select the paintbrush tool, I can only paint if I hold down the option key. This is what the cursor look like (I had to paint it since I couldn't capture it). It is a rectangle with two lines through it. I am running Photoshop CS4 on a Macbook Pro with Mac OS X 10.6.6. Using both the trackpad and an external Logitech MX5000 mouse I see the same issue. This started when I fired up Photoshop today for the first time in a while. I can't remember changing any options or doing anything that could cause this. Is it possible that the option key is somehow locked in place, or there is some equivalent of num lock on? Very strange problem, I would appreciate any help anybody can offer. Edit: To add, the icon remains the same within all the menu options - it never goes back to being just a normal mouse cursor. Also, right click works fine, and if I hold down option, the cursor goes back to normal and I can paint with it. I can't use Marquee, Lasso, Crop, Type etc. even with option held down. When I go into Bridge, it is the same icon.

  What is the easiest way to circle out something in a picture, like this example This is accomplished in Gimp: Here are the steps necesary to draw an empty ellipse without clearing the contents of the image below it. 1 - Layer New layer 2 - Make the layer to be the same size as the image and layer fill type to transparency. This should be already selected by default. 3 - On the toolbox select the ellipse select tool and make an ellipse 4 - Use the bucket fill tool to paint the ellipse with your desired color. 5 - Right click on it and go to Select Shrink... 6 - Type in how many pixels you want the border to be and click ok. 7 - Go to the menu and click Edit Clear. I feel it is very indirect, in the sense that first fill out the region enclosed by the ellipse, and then shrink the region to the boundary. I wonder if there is a quicker and more direct way to circle out something, such as by directly drawing the boundary? My OS is Ubuntu. What I was asking may be done outside of gimp, but must be by some software under Ubuntu. Thanks!

• Which RAM is faster (or, is Crucial's Memory Advisor giving non-optimal advice)?

  In general, if a PC's motherboard is only specified for RAM up to a given core speed x, will that PC be faster with: RAM of latency y capable of running at a maximum core speed >x or RAM of latency <y capable of running at a maximum core speed of exactly x ? I would have thought the latter, but Crucial's Memory Adviser tool advises the former. So, which of us is correct - me, or the machine? (Here is a concrete example: I wish to upgrade a Toshiba Satellite Pro L300-155 laptop from its current 1GB RAM to 2GB Crucial RAM. The laptop's specifications are given here. I see from those specifications that the laptop is designed for DDR2-667 Ram. Crucial sells two compatible 2GB kits, priced exactly the same as each other: DDR2-667, CL=5; DDR2-800, CL=6. It seems to me that of these two upgrade kits, the first kit would run slightly faster on the L300-155 than the second, because both will presumably be capped at DDR2-667 core speed (see laptop specs), but the second kit has more latency. However, Crucial's Memory Advisor tool recommends the second kit.)

• Distributing Microsoft Office Template or Macro over the network

  We have around 400 users who use Word and we want to make their life easier by distributing templates and macros over the network. The easiest way to do this of course to setup a shared network folder and let them get the appropriate templates and macros. Of course, each user has to know where to copy these files to in their local PC, and we have to rely on constant email communication to let them know for newer version of the macro and templates. The next alternative is to ask them to configure Word to point to these network folder. But of course any disruption to the network means disruption to their work. We are thinking to setup a synchronization mechanism that downloads new templates to their local machine. We are also thinking to make this sync tool to prompt users that it will download new templates - you know just to give them visibility that they are receiving changes. We are wondering what is the best approach that people usually use in their workplaces ? Are there any specific tool that can make this task easier ?

• Lenovo System Update Breaks Windows Live

  Hey everyone, I've been racking my brain (and fingers from typing) trying to solve this issue to no avail. I have a Lenovo computer and I install their system update tool to install all my missing drivers. However after this tool is installed Windows Live 2011 breaks, it will no longer sign in giving error number 8e5e0247 all the solutions online haven't helped. It appears that a language setting somewhere gets set to en_ms, and I'm en_ca. My computer is running Windows 7 x64. When i try to sign onto messenger it gives an error that (with some research) means your locale or language is not supported, I've searched my computer for any reference to en_ms but find none. Also a few other things seem to have broken, When a UAC box comes up it is no longer able to identify the publisher of anything, and also the indexing service does not work (I'm not sure if the indexing issue is related, but the UAC issue happened right after installation), I had this issue before but I don't remember how I fixed it, I believe it had something to do with environmental variables. When it goes to sign in it gets as far as the "Loading contacts" then stops and goes back to the sign in screen. Has anyone seen this before? Thanks

• Installing Windows 8 to another computer with an OEM product Key

  Questions come up after reading the article about the new method Microsoft uses to License windows 8 computers. Let say I bought a Brand new laptop with windows 8 preloaded. Not like the old way, there is no OEM sticker in the back of the computer which can be used for reloading system.(new product key is stored in BIOS as mentioned in the article, the key can be pulled out by using a software anyway). Is it possible to install windows 8 on another computer with that particular key in case the computer is totally damaged? Here is what i tried: First, I extracted the key with a software name "windows 8 key viewer". using the windows 8 upgrade tool to determine what copy of windows 8 I should download for the installation. The tool did correctly recognized the key as a legitimate one. but it claims that key can not be installed with a retail media (Since it is an oem key). Does this mean the only way to do it is to use an OEM CD from the manufacturer? Will ISO from MSDN source do? or it is just not possible??

• Deployment and monitoring tools for java/tomcat/linux environment

  I'm a developer for many years, but don't have tons of experience in ops, so apology if this is a newbe question. In my company we run a web service written in Java mainly based on a Tomcat web server. We have two datacenters with about 10 hosts each. Hosts are of several types: Dababase, Tomcats, some offline java processes, memcached servers. All hosts are Linux CentOS Up until now, when releasing a new version to production we've been using a set of inhouse shell script that copy jars/wars and restart the tomcats. The company has gotten bigger so it has become more and more difficult operating all this and taking code from development, through QA, staging and to production. A typical release many times involves human errors that cost us precious uptime. Sometimes we need to revert to last known good and this isn't easy to say the least... We're looking for a tool, a framework, a solution that would provide the following: Supports the given list of technology (java, tomcat, linux etc) Provides easy deployment through different stages, including QA and production Provides configuration management. E.g. setting server properties (what's the connection URL of each host etc), server.xml or context configuration etc Monitoring. If we can get monitoring in the same package, that'll be nice. If not, then yet another tool we can use to monitor our servers. Preferably, open source with tons of documentation ;) Can anyone share their experience? Suggest a few tools? Thanks!

• How to get Subversion repository from svn:// and https://?

  I know these are noob questions, but I never got my own Subversion running before and I'm kinda lost. I installed VisualSVN in Windows, but it doesn't support svn:// protocol by default, only HTTP or HTTPS. It is working fine over HTTP, and I'm able to manage it from its management tool, see its repositories and get their HTTP-based URL, and from that I'm able to use Tortoise to check out and check in. I'm able to check out from a repository URL using Tortoise: http://Main:90/svn/HikariKrumo/ But I need svn:// protocol for Redmine to access it. Redmine says to support http:// but it reports this error message: The entry or revision was not found in the repository.. And I need HTTPS to access it from Internet. If I can get Redmine to access it from svn:// I can just configure it to use HTTPS in place of HTTP, and I hope it all to works. I like VisualSVN because of its management tool, but I can use another Subversion distro if needed, as long as it supports svn:// and https://. I'm getting crazy on it because it should be simple but I can't get it to work.

• Should I be able to Windows Phone 8 emulator running with this AMD config

  I have just bought a new system as follows * AMD A4-5300 Trinity 3.4GHz * Gigabyte GA-F2A55M-DS2 Motherboard I checked and the A4-5300 supports Virtualisation. I have run the SLAT checking tool and it says that my machine supports SLAT. Been into the BIOS and ensures that SVN is enabled. I have also run the coreinfo tool that indicates that SVN is not valid fort the machine nor is NPT.. not sure why this conflicts with the true BIOS setting (I checked with GIGABYTE and seems that NPT and NX are not options that can be set in the BIOS) But.. when I run the emulator I it hangs - I can see some activity in Hyper-V manager, but it doesnt get very far and no meaningfull error messages. Been working the plethora of suggestions to get around this, but so far, nothing has worked. My question is should this setup allow the WP8 emulator to run. I am positive the CPU supports virtualisation, but are there issues with the motherboard here? I have spent a huge amount of time on this so far....am I wasting my time with the current configuration, or should it work? thanks

• HP LaserJet 1515: Disable "refill" warning

  I have a HP LaserJet 1515 connected to a Windows 7 PC. The Magenta cartridge is empty; the printer shows a warning to that effect, and won't let me print even black-and-white documents any more. I can't turn the warning off manually using the printer's small console: When I try to enter any menu, the display says "Menu access disabled". I have no idea why. There is a setting to override the warning, but it can't be changed using the Network interface in the browser (Although it is there on the status page) According to the manual,the HP printing tool is supposed to offer a switch for this, but it won't install on my Windows 7. It just rumbles about for half an hour, to magnificently exit with an "unknown error" requiring a reboot. On second look, the problem seems to be that Windows 7 just isn't supported. There is no download link for the tool when you specify Windows 7 as your OS. I just want to print a black-and-white-document on a printer whose black cartridge is still 65% full. Is this indeed impossible? On second thought, I'm cross-posting this on the HP support forum. I'll update here if anything comes up.

• Mac OS X - Time Machine backup fails verification - What can I do to save the history?

  Hi, How do I make Time Machine to make a new complete backup without losing older versions of backed up files? Verbose: I am using the Time Machine backup on my OS X (Snow Leopard) to backup the whole computer to an external drive. I especially like the "history", i.e. the feature that allows you to restore the older version of a file. Problem: I had some data corruption on my external backup drive, I repaired it with the System Tool for doing that, it found some faults. I had the disk tool repair the external drive. After that, the external drive was OK and I could use Time Machine again. I let Time Machine do one more backup. Now I made a verification according to http://superuser.com/questions/47628/verifying-time-machine-backups, namely along sudo diff -qr . $HOME/Desktop 2>&1 | tee $HOME/timemachine-diff.log However: After doing the command above, several differences and missing files were reported, approx. 200 files in sum. Whereas some of the missing files were cache or excluded directories, the differences do bother me, especially as some important documents from me are listed as differing. How can I make sure that the data on the external drive is synced correctly? Is it possible to have Time Machine to do a complete new backup without losing the history? Or to have Time Machine compare all files for differences and re-write all files that are different? Or can I set some flags on the files that do not match to have them copied again? (like the archive-flag in Windows/Dos). I'd rather not touch the files because I would like to keep the date of last change/date of creation) Thank you for your thoughts!

• Restore only one partition of Windows Backup

  I have a MacBook Pro with an HD partitioned. This HD was divided in two partitions: the first was about 650 GB, with OS X installed, and the second one (created with BootCamp Assistant) was about 100 GB, with Windows 7 installed. I needed more space for Windows, so I decided to backup the Windows partition using the Windows backup tool, from Control Panel. I created an image of my partition, stored it in an external HD, and now I'm trying to use it. In order to give more space to Windows, I formatted the HD, and recreate a new partition table, with the first partition of about 250 GB (with OS X) and the second of the exactly size of the previous partition in which was installed Windows (about 100 GB); thre rest was empty space. In the second, I tried to restore the Windows backup. I plugged in the Windows Installation CD (with the HD with the backup connected to the computer), and select the option "Repair your computer". Then, I choose the image of the backup (automatically recognized), and I try to restore it. The problem is that now the System Recovery Tool wants to format all the HD, in order to install only Windows! In this way, I should lose everything, also the MacOS partition! Is there a way to install the backup only in the Windows partition?

  So… lately I’ve been tasked with helping bring some non-developers over the hump and become full-fledged, all around, SharePoint developers. Well, only time will tell if I’m successful or a complete failure. Good thing about failures though, you know what NOT to do next time! Anyway, I’ve been writing some sort of code since I was about 10 years old; so I sometimes take for granted the effort some people have to go through to learn a new technology. I guess if I had to say I was an “expert” in one thing it would be learning (and getting “stuff” done) in new technologies. Maybe that’s why I’ve embraced SharePoint and the SharePoint community. SharePoint is the first technology I haven’t been able to master or get everything done without help from other people. I KNOW I’ll never know it all and I learn something new every day.  It keeps it interesting, it keeps me motivated, and keeps me involved. So, what some people may consider a downside of SharePoint, I definitely consider a plus. Crap.. I’m rambling. Where was I? Oh yeah… me trying to be helpful. Like I said, I am able to quickly and effectively pick up new languages, technology, etc. and put it to good use. Am I just brilliant? Well, my mom thinks so.. but maybe not. Maybe I’ve just been doing it for a long time…. 25 years in some form or fashion… wow I’m old… Anyway, what I lack in depth I make up for in breadth and being the “go-to” guy wherever I work when someone needs to “get stuff done”.  Let’s see if I can take some of that experience and put it to practical use to help new people get up to speed faster, learn things more effectively, and become that go-to guy. First off…  make sure you… Know The Basics I don’t have the time to teach new developers the basics, but you gotta know them. I’ve only been “taught” two languages.. Fortran 77 and C… everything else I’ve picked up from “doing”. I HAD to know the basics though, and all new developers need to understand the very basics of development.  97.23% of all languages will have the following: Variables Functions Arrays If statements For loops / While loops If you think about it, most development is “if this, do this… or while this, do this…”.  “This” may be some unique method to your language or something you develop, but the basics are the basics. YES there are MANY other development topics you need to understand, but you shouldn’t be scratching your head trying to figure out what a ”for loop” is… (Also learn about classes and hashtables as quickly as possible). Once you have the basics down it makes it much easier to… Learn By Doing This may just apply to me and my warped brain.  I don’t learn a new technology by reading or hearing someone speak about it. I learn by doing. It does me no good to try and learn all of the intricacies of a new language or technology inside-and-out before getting my hands dirty. Just show me how to do one thing… let me get that working… then show me how to do the next thing.. let me get that working… Now, let’s see what I can figure out on my own. Okay.. now it starts to make sense. I see how the language works, I can step through the code, and before you know it.. I’m productive in a new technology. Be careful here though…. make sure you… Don’t Reinvent The Wheel People have been writing code for what… 50+ years now? So, why are you trying to tackle ANYTHING without first Googling it with Bing to see what others have done first? When I was first learning C# (I had come from a Java background) I had to call a web service.  Sure! No problem! I’d done this many times in Java. So, I proceeded to write an HTTP Handler, called the Web Service and it worked like a charm!!!  Probably about 2.3 seconds after I got it working completely someone says to me “Why didn’t you just add a Web Reference?” Really? You can do that?  oops… I just wasted a lot of time. Before undertaking the development of any sort of utility method in a new language, make sure it’s not already handled for you… Okay… you are starting to write some code and are curious about the possibilities? Well… don’t just sit there… Try It And See What Happens This is actually one of my biggest pet peeves. “So… ‘x++’ works in C#, but does it also work in JavaScript?”   Really? Did you just ask me that? In the time it spent for you to type that email, press the send button, me receive the email, get around to reading it, and replying with “yes” you could have tested it 47 times and know the answer! Just TRY it! See what happens! You aren’t doing brain surgery. You aren’t going to kill anyone, and you BETTER not be developing in production. So, you are not going to crash any production systems!! Seriously! Get off your butt and just try it yourself. The extra added benefit is that it doesn’t work, the absolute best way to learn is to… Learn From Your Failures I don’t know about you… but if I screw up and something doesn’t work, I learn A LOT more debugging my problem than if everything magically worked. It’s okay that you aren’t perfect! Not everyone can be me? In the same vein… don’t ask someone else to debug your problem until you have made a valiant attempt to do so yourself. There’s nothing quite like stepping through code line by line to see what it’s REALLY doing… and you’ll never feel more stupid sometimes than when you realize WHY it’s not working.. but you realize... you learn... and you remember. There is nothing wrong with failure as long as you learn from it. As you start writing more and more and more code make sure that you ALWAYS… Develop for Production You will soon learn that the “prototype” you wrote last week to show as a “proof of concept” is going to go directly into production no matter how much you beg and plead and try to explain it’s not ready to go into production… it’s going to go straight there.. and it’s like herpes.. it doesn’t go away and there’s no fixing it once it’s in there.  So, why not write ALL your code like it will be put in production? It MIGHT take a little longer, but in the long run it will be easier to maintain, get help on, and you won’t be embarrassed that it’s sitting on a production server for everyone to use and see. So, now that you are getting comfortable and writing code for production it is important to to remember the… KISS Principle… Learn It… Love It… Keep It Simple Stupid Seriously.. don’t try to show how smart you are by writing the most complicated code in history. Break your problem up into discrete steps and write each step. If it turns out you have some redundancy, you can always go back and tweak your code later.  How bad is it when you write code that LOOKS cocky? I’ve seen it before… some of the most abstract and complicated classes when a class wasn’t even needed! Or the most elaborate unreadable code jammed into one really long line when it could have been written in three lines, performed just as well, and been SOOO much easier to maintain. Keep it clear and simple.. baby steps people. This will help you learn the technology, debug problems, AND it will help others help you find your problems if they don’t have to decipher the Dead Sea Scrolls just to figure out what you are trying to do…. Really.. don’t be that guy… try to curb your ego and… Keep an Open Mind No matter how smart you are… how fast you type… or how much you get paid, don’t let your ego get in the way. There is probably a better way to do everything you’ve ever done. Don’t become so cocky that you can’t think someone knows more than you. There’s a lot of brilliant, helpful people out there willing to show you tricks if you just give them a chance. A very super-awesome developer once told me “So what if you’ve been writing code for 10 years or more! Does your code look basically the same? Are you not growing as a developer?” Those 10 years become pretty meaningless if you just “know” that you are right and have not picked up new tips, tricks, methods, and patterns along the way. Learn from others and find out what’s new in development land (you know you don’t have to specifically use pointers anymore??). Along those same lines… If it’s not working, first assume you are doing something wrong. You have no idea how much it annoys people who are trying to help you when you first assume that the help they are trying to give you is wrong. Just MAYBE… you… the person learning is making some small mistake? Maybe you didn’t describe your problem correctly? Maybe you are using the wrong terminology? “I did exactly what you said and it didn’t work.”  Oh really? Are you SURE about that? “Your solution doesn’t work.”  Well… I’m pretty sure it works, I’ve used it 200 times… What are you doing differently? First try some humility and appreciation.. it will go much further, especially when it turns out YOU are the one that is wrong. When all else fails…. Try Professional Training Some people just don’t have the mindset to go and figure stuff out. It’s a gift and not everyone has it. If everyone could do it I wouldn’t have a job and there wouldn’t be professional training available.  So, if you’ve tried everything else and no light bulbs are coming on, contact the experts who specialize in training. • SCOM 2007 versus Zenoss (or other open source)

  I've taken the liberty to test both SCOM 2007 and Zenoss and found the following: SCOM 2007 Pros: Great MS Windows server monitoring and reporting In-depth configuration and easily integrates into a "MS datacenter" Cons: limited network device monitoring support (without 3rd party plugins) expensive difficult learning curve Zenoss Pros: Open Source (free) decent server monitoring for Windows, great monitoring for Linux decent network device monitoring Cons: not as in-depth as SCOM (for Windows at least) So my question to you folks is this: Given the above, and given that I'm trying to monitor 55 Windows servers, 1 Linux server, 2 ESX servers, and Juniper equipment...which would you recommend?

  I have spent my career on the software development side of things and in the latter part have become more and more involved in the realm of Software Configuration Management. Now I am moving into an IT group and need to ramp up on CM practices from that standpoint. Are there any good references (books, websites, blogs whatever) out there comparing Software CM practices to IT CM practices? Basically I'm in learning mode and am trying compare things I already know from the software development side to things on the IT side.
