• IOGEAR KVM cannot reset admin account

  According to the manual you can do a cold reset by holding the reset button in for 3 seconds. This does seem to reset it but the username and password are not reset... I've tried the keyboard hotkeys - Num-Lock and minus sign (-) to get into hotkey mode and then use the "r" and "" to reset to factory defaults but that doesnt seem to do anything either. It just reverts to User1. I'm not sure what the default admin username should be but admin doesnt seem to work I need to get to the admin menu to name the ports but cannot get access. Any ideas? Using GCS1758 manual with no luck.

• Untar after uploading to linux from windows

  I have created tar.gz from my linux server, and I downloaded the same to my linux system and I successfully doen untar with tar -xvf package.tar.gz. And now my issue I downloaded same package.tar.gz to the windows system then uploaded to another linux server, and tried same command tar -xvf package.tar.gz. but it getting tar: This does not look like a tar archive tar: Skipping to next header tar: Exiting with failure status due to previous errors as response. I also tried filezill manual trnasfer with binary mode. How can I do the same ? Update When I directly download to the linux system its working fine. • Mapped commands in VIM starting with a Comma

  In my .vimrc, I defined this line: map ,ps <Esc>:!ps<Space>-a<CR> The mapping is set (which I controlled via :verbose map ,ps while inside vim). There is nothing else mapped to the comma. However, if I type the command in command mode, nothing is displayed in the status bar, the comma is ignored, the p movement and the s insert are triggered. (I.e., VIM reacts, as if there was no command ,ps.) Is there any magic that I have overlooked in enabling comma-started mapped commands?

• Winlogon.exe causes C++ runtime error

  Recently I've become unable to log into my Dell Precision M2400. It uses the Dell Controlpoint login GUI instead of the typical windows one, and has now started giving me a runtime error on winlogon.exe that ends with a c000021a BSOD. I have tried running through safe mode and a restore to the last known good setting with no success. Unfortunately by BIOS password is locked and the one IT guy with the password is on vacation and unreachable until after I leave for a business trip. Is there anyway to bypass the Dell logon screen and get to the default windows one? Thanks.

• Set Display Refresh Rate in OSX w/o External Utilities

  I have an iMac and an LG Flatron connected as a secondary monitor. The recommended resolution for the flatron is 1680x1050 @ 65.290 Hz (horiz), 59.954 Hz (vert). For some reason, OSX is choosing a slightly different set of scan rates and this is currently my best guess of why the monitor goes into power saving mode when connected to the iMac (but works fine on a PC). Now, I resolved this by installing switchResX and fudging the scan rates according to the specs in the manual. But how does one change these rates w/o 3rd party tools? Which config files need editing? Thanks

• bluetooth doesn't turn off during sleep in Windows 7

  I have a Bluetooth USB dongle on a Windows 7 laptop. I did not install any Bluetooth drivers, so I assume that the device is using the Microsoft stack. When the computer goes to sleep, the Bluetooth adapter stays on. I don't want Bluetooth devices to wake the computer, so I want sleep to turn off the dongle, but I can't find power management options for Bluetooth in the Control Panel and Device Manager. I also have an issue where the computer doesn't reach full sleep mode, I'm hoping that turning Bluetooth off will solve that problem, too. How can I turn off Bluetooth during sleep?

• Virtual PC - Display Issue with Ubuntu Server

  Hi Everyone, I just did a clean install of Ubuntu Server 9.04 in Virtual PC on the Windows 7 RC, and it seems to be having a bit of an issue with the virtual machine's display adapter. I've tried setting a VGA flag in the GRUB configuration to no avail. This is a guess, but I think it has something to do with the color console mode that gets enabled by default at boot time. The system starts booting just fine (i.e. the console looks "normal" when I'm asked to enter an LVM passphrase, etc.), but then the display goes wonky after a few seconds and I end up with this. Typing commands in bash works just fine: it's not like the system is frozen or anything, I just can't see anything that I type. The console looks exactly the way it does in the image below.

  I'm in need of an application that can manage multiple Internet Explorer instances (to be precise nomerge sessions) like you can in Remote Desktop Manager with RDPs. This app should host them in single window and arrange IE instances e.g. in tabs or lists. OK, in Remote Desktop Manager you can create Web session, but in embedded mode you cannot set the nomerge option - all windows and tabs share the same session. I've been searching the web, but with no results. So I put this question whether anyone know of such application or any workaround. Or I have to write my own app?

• what might cause a print error in perl?

  I have a long running script that every hour opens a file, prints to it and closes the file. I've recently found very rarely, the print is failing, not because I'm testing the status of the print itself but rather due to the fact of missing entries in the file until the system is actually rebooted! I do trap for file open failures and write a message to syslog when that happens and I'm not seeing any open failures so I'm now guessing it may be the print that is failing. I'm not trapping the print failures, which I suspect most people don't but am now going to update that one print. Meanwhile, my question is does anyone know what types of situations could cause a print statement to fail when there is plenty of disk storage and no contention for a file which has been successfully opened in append mode?

• bash code in rc.local not excuting after bootup

  Does anyone know why a system would not execute the script code within rc.local on bootup? I have a post configuration bash script that I want to run after the initial install of VMware ESX (Red Hat), and for some reason it doesn't seem to execute. I have the setup to log its start of execution and even its progress so that I can see how far it gets in case it fails at some point, but even when I look at that log, I am finding that didn't even started the execution of the script code. I already checked to see that script has execution permissions (755), what else should I be looking at? • Installing isolated instance of MySQL on Windows using silent install with .msi

  I'm trying to write an installer for an internal application we wrote. After it installs our application it then installs MySQL using the .msi installer in silent mode. I specify the install dir and data dir to that of a directory within my application's install directory, such as: msiexec /i @@MYSQL_INSTALLER_FILE@@ /qn INSTALLDIR="@@INSTALL_DIR@@\MySQL\" DATADIR="@@INSTALL_DIR@@\MySQL\" USERNAME="@@DB_USER@@" PASSWORD="@@DB_PASS@@" (the @@variable@@'s are replace by my installer routine using InstallJammer) Once installed, I use mysqld.exe to install a windows service with a custom service name and defaults file like so: mysqld.exe --install CustomMySQL --defaults-file="@@INSTALL_DIR@@\MySQL\my.ini" This works fine as long as there is not already another instance of MySQL installed. If there is it silently fails to install MySQL. Running the msi installer manually (double-click) shows an error that a previous version is already installed and just aborts. Is there a way to automate installing MySQL as an isolated instance, regardless of whether another version/instance is already installed?

• Can the Windows 8.1 update be applied without local terminal?

  It is possible to access the Windows Store from a remote desktop session and initiate the Windows 8.1 Update from the Windows Store, but the update hangs after the first reboot, likely waiting for the user to accept the license check. This leaves the computer unusable remotely. Is there a way to pre-accept the license terms so that the update can complete autonomously? Perhaps an UNATTEND.XML such as would be used for an unattended clean install? Failing that, is there a way to connect with remote desktop during that phase of the install (it appears to be GUI-mode setup running with the usual Windows kernel and full OS)?

• "Request not supported" in IPCONFIG (WinXP SP3)

  In a customer PC (Windows XP SP3), suddenly the network went down: the network adapter appears with an error mark. I replaced the network card, but the new one does the same thing. When I enter IPCONFIG, XP shows this error (in standard and safe mode): Internal error occurred Request not supported Unable to query host name If I start the system with a boot cd the PC runs fine, so the problem seems to be in the XP installation. I tried: uninstalling and reinstalling the network card in the Device Manager disabling and reenabling the card netsh int ip reset netsh winsock reset catalog and a couple of "reset" programs (WinsockxpFix.exe, etc) with no luck. Is there any way to fix it without reinstalling XP? TIA, Pablo

• WinXP keyboard input repeat rate problem

  I have problem similar to http://superuser.com/questions/33981/problems-with-kvm-switch-and-keyboard-repeat-rate-on-windows-xp: When I press and hold some key it's repeated random number of times, after that repeat stops and I need to release key and press it again to make repeat continue. If there's simultaneous sound playback and repeat is stopped, sound's stuck while I hold key with unpleasant drumming as if there's some audio problem. This issue is reproducible in WinXP Safe Mode. On the same config under Linux there's no issue. • Asp.net error messages when on server are not displayed

  I have been tasked with setting up asp.net websites on a windows server 2008 which are all in debug mode When browsing a website on the server and an error occurs, for example the database connection cannot be open I would expect as per normal to receive the Asp.net Server error page with an error dump Something like - http://www.codeproject.com/KB/books/1861005040/image091.gif However, what actually happens is I get random characters on the web page. For example: <?)=????*??2o????v??YK?WuZ,?6[N??f?O??b??@!???u]S??yQ?iN?&e???E???j??1z??x??????o?y????U??M???2d?i?4 This is not the correct or expected behaviour. The event log does however show what has gone wrong. How do I get the Server Error page to render properly, am I missing something in the servers asp.net setup?

• Sysprep on Windows 7 for a non-windows admin?

  I'm needing to use sysprep to deploy some Windows 7 machines. I can't find any resources that explain this very easily. In particular, I've loaded all of the programs I want for the image onto a computer. If I want to use prepares this for cloning onto 200 other machines, what steps would I need to take? Or do I need to start again, creating the image using 'audit' mode? The machines I'm using come pre-configured from the manufacturer with a host of custom drivers that wouldn't be fun to re-install - I'd rather use their base image to build upon. Cheers, Victor

  I cannot add an app to the list to manually set it to high performance (Radeon instead of Intel HD). When I browse for an exe, nothing happens, the list is still empty. So, maybe I can edit some .cfg or .ini? UPDATE This is NOT my screenshot... actually I've found it on the Net. The list with iexplore.exe is what I meant. When I click 'Browse' and choose any exe (Portal2.exe, for instance) nothing happens. The list is empty, so I cannot set mode for Portal2.exe.

• Physically moving a hard drive from older iMac (c2d) to new iMac (i7) ?

  Instead of my usual habit of using superduper to mirror my drive to a new computer, I just physically moved the hard drive from an older iMac to a new one. But... it now doesn't boot, getting stuck at the apple logo screen. Since the hard drive that came with the new iMac works well, and my old drive works well when I return it to the older iMac, I conclude that there is some problem at the system/kernel level due to the different hardware. In the past I did similar things (e.g. starting a C2D machine from a Core Duo in target disk mode), so perhaps the change in architecture to the i5/i7 is too problematic? The main point: do you know of any way to get the system to rebuild for itself the proper versions of the system components when booting? Are there certain directories that I can safely delete to make that happen? Thanks

  I'm trying to use Octave as a programmer's calculator. I want to input a 64-bit pointer, but when I do apparently the 64-bit value gets silently truncated to 32-bit: octave:44> base_ptr=0x1010101020202020 base_ptr = 538976288 octave:45> uint64(base_ptr) ans = 538976288 octave:46> printf("%lx\n", base_ptr) 20202020 So it seems like it's truncated the input value to the low 32-bits. I would use scanf, but the docs say it should only be used internally. How can I input the full 64-bit value? Alternately, is there some awesome free programmer's calculator out there for Windows? (I know Windows calculator has a programmer's mode but I would like arbitrary variable support). I tried using my ti-89 but it also doesn't support 64-bit hex.

  I regularly use Windows Explorer to browse my drives and data, and I notice little freezes and hiccups at times. It's especially noticable when browsing local or network folders with lots of video files (AVI, MKV, MPG, etc). I almost always browse in Details view, and the "Do not cache thumbnails" option is turned on. Even though I'm in "Details" mode, I'm convinced the sluggishness is due to Windows trying to generate thumbnails for the video files, so I want to disable thumbnail generation for these files. I occasionally use Thumbnails view for browsing image files, so I don't want to disable all thumbnails. But for future reference, this might be good to know. So I have three questions about disabling Windows thumbnail generation: How do I disable thumbnail generation for all non-image files? How do I disable thumbnail generation for all files? How do I disable thumbnail generation for one specific filetype? And finally, how do I undo (re-enable thumbnails) once I've performed one of the above?

• ssh login successful, but scp password gives me "Permission denied"

  I'm trying to get some blogging software up on an organizational remote server. I tried to set up a SSH Key but was having problems and decided that getting the blog up and running was more important than dealing with the SSH Key issue, so I ssh-keygen -R remoteserver.com. Now I can successfully login with ssh -v [email protected] and the correct password. Once logged in I can move around and read any file and directory that I should be able to read. But when I try to edit an existing -rw-r--r-- file with VIM, it shows up as read-only, if I try to edit permissions I get chmod: file.ext: Operation not permitted, and if I try to scp a new file from my local machine I'm prompted for the remote user's password, and then get scp: /home/path/to/file.ext: Permission denied. Since I didn't have any of these problems before I tried to set up the ssh key, I suspect these anomalies are a side effect of that, but I don't know how to troubleshoot this. So what does a foolish server-newb, such as myself, need to do to get edit capability back as a remote user? Addendum 1: My userids are different between my local machine and the remote server. • SCO UNIX problem: "Cannot create /var/adm/utmp or /var/adm/utmpx"

  Hey everyone, I have an old server that doesn't boot. I don't know the version of unix installed, but I see SCO UNIX. It stops with that error: UX:init: ERROR: Cannot create /var/adm/utmp or /var/adm/utmpx UX:init: ERROR: failed write of utmpx entry: " " UX:init: ERROR: failed write of utmpx entry: " " UX:init: INFO: SINGLE USER MODE After that message, it just stops. I cannot write or press anything. Even CTRL + ALT + DEL does not work. I cannot get into the system. I have tried booting with a DamnSmallLinux LiveCD but it does not recognize the file system on HDA. Is there a way to either log in as root or bypass this error? Thanks.

• Set 802.1Q tagged port on VLAN1 on Dell PowerConnect switch

  I'm having big troubles when adding this Dell switch to my network. Here we use several VLANs to segment traffic. All switches (3com and DLink mostly) have configured the same VLANs, most ports are 'untagged' and belong to a single VLAN, except for the ports used to join together the switches (in a star topology), these ports belong to all VLANs and use 802.1Q tags. So far, it works really well. But on this new switch (a Dell PowerConnect 5448), the settings are very different (and confusing). I have configured the same VLANs, an the uplink ports are set in 'general' mode (supposed to be fully 802.1Q compliant), I can set the VLAN membership as 'T' on these ports for all VLANs except VLAN 1. It always stay as 'U' on VLAN 1. Any ideas?

But today when i came back from college and started it , it was starting fine but after sometime it's getting restarted , again and again getting restarted at different points , so i tried to boot it in safe mode but same problem. Now after all this , i finally decided to format the drive C (it is in 80 GB) and load new OS windows XP3. After formatting (quick format) and loading xp3 sufficient files , when it was getting rebooted for copying the actual os files , it hung and a weird screen came.
