• Transisting from Chemical engineering to software industry what to do??

  Hello all. Currently I am in my last semester of Engineering & has made my mind to switch to software field but given my knowledge of programming limited only to C. I am confused what to do next.Currently i have two choices. 1) Get good at C,Learn Python & write some good code/Apps & increase my employability chances. Or 2) Do some Java/.Net certifications to increase my employability chances. Any kind of advice/suggestion is highly welcomed. P.s:I am also good at Linux & have a above average knowledge of operating systems. P.p.s:An view from Indian Programmers would be beneficial.

• Why do software patches have to be accepted by a developer?

  In open source projects, why do software patches have to be accepted by a developer? Couldn't contributors just release their own patches and allow people to add the patch if they choose to. I'm wondering why there are so many Ubuntu programs that could use such obvious work but aren't updated. For instance, lots of people want Rhythmbox to be more attractive. Why can't the people who design themes on DeviantArt turn those into code and let users download those themes themselves, even if the developers at Rhythmbox won't accept different themes?

• What job is better for a newbie, one that requires you to create a new program frequently, or something like software maintenance?

  One of my friends has just completed his college degree and is ready to join the programmers' world. Today he has two offers, one with new projects every time, and another with software maintenance. The remaining factors are not important to him, what he wants to know is which option is better? My experience goes with second option because my first job was the maintenance one and I could learn how my fellow programmers made mistakes while coding . But I soon switched to a new job which required me to create new project every time. I enjoyed both but I must admit that my first job has given me a more advantage today. But it's not necessary that my experience can give benefit to him. But I want to know what is general approach? If I have to give him final verdict on these two, what should I tell him? • Lean/Kanban *Inside* Software (i.e. WIP-Limits, Reducing Queues and Pull as Programming Techniques)

  Thinking about Kanban, I realized that the queuing-theory behind the SW-development-methodology obviously also applies to concurrent software. Now I'm looking for whether this kind of thinking is explicitly applied in some area. A simple example: We usually want to limit the number of threads to avoid cache-thrashing (WIP-Limits). In the paper about the disruptor pattern[1], one statement that I found interesting was that producer/consumers are rarely balanced so when using queues, either consumers wait (queues are empty), or producers produce more than is consumed, resulting in either a full capacity-constrained queue or an unconstrained one blowing up and eating away memory. Both, in lean-speak, is waste, and increases lead-time. • Is it a good practice to use branches to maintain different editions of the same software?

  We have a product that has a few different editions. The differences are minor: different strings here and there, very little additional logic in one, very little difference in logic in the other. When the software is being developed, most changes need to be added to each edition; however, there are a few that don't and a few that needs to differ. Is it a valid use of branches if I have release-editionA and release-editionB (..etc) branches? Are there any gotchas? Good practices? Update: Thanks for the insight everyone, lots of good answers here. The general consensus seems to be that it is a bad idea to use branches for this purpose. For anyone wondering, my final solution to the problem is to externalize strings as configuration, and externalize the differing logic as plugins or scripts.

So, what significant lost advances that happened on a side track should be revived in the main stream of software? These would be ideas that worked well in their context but a different context appeared and became dominant the context, even though it lacked the idea. It maybe that in the new dominant context one just cannot do something or it requires great effort to be exerted.

• In C++, is it a reflection of poor software design if objects are deleted manually?

  With the advent of smart pointers, is it a sign of poor design if I see objects are deleted? I'm seeing some software components in our product that people are still doing this. This practice strikes me as un-idiomatic, but I need to be sure this is the industry consensus. I'm not starting a crusade but it'd be nice to be prepared theory wise. Edit: legit uses of delete, Klaim mentioned the object pool use case. I agree. Bad examples of using delete, I am seeing many new's in constructor or start() and corresponding delete's in the destructor or stop(), why not use scoped_ptr? It makes the code cleaner.

• What software is responsible for connecting to the wireless net specified in /etc/network/interfaces?

  I'm curious what software (package, utility in bin's) handle interface parameters in /etc/network/interfaces and decides to connect to the specified wireless net. I use wifi usb stick dlink DWL-110 attached to wlan0 with ndiswrapper driver. Sometimes wlan0 sees my wifi net - iwlist wlan0 scan shows it, but does not connect to it - iwconfig shows AP Not-Associated, until I replug the stick. Neither reinserting module with ndiswrapper, not ifdown/ifup or restarting networking helps. That is why I need to know what OS entity handles connection/reconnection to wireless net. EDIT: shame on me, I use wireless-tool package with wep encryption

  I am a software developer; in fact a mobile application developer with 4 years of experience. I am passionate about training. I have never been an official trainer but, I have trained freshers on mobile technologies. Now how do I become a professional technical trainer. • How can I get started installing Buddycloud software to a hosted site?

  I'm confused about how one hosts a Buddycloud (federated social networking software) channel. I downloaded the source code, but I'm not sure how to install it on my website. Most of the information seems to assume that the host is running their own server, but I have plain ol' paid web hosting. I know that you also need to set up an XMPP server to run Buddycloud, and I'm not sure how to do that on my hosted website—or if it's even possible. If it matters, my site is hosted on a Linux server through IX Web Hosting. I'd greatly appreciate it if you guys could point me in the right direction.

• OO Software Architecture - base class that everything inherits from. Bad/good idea?

  I am reviewing a proposed OO software architecture that looks like this: Base Foo Something Bar SomethingElse Where Base is a static class. My immediate thought was that every object in any class will inherit all the methods in Base which would create a large object. Could this cause problems for a large system? The whole architecture is hierarchical.. the 'tree' is much bigger than this really. Does this sort of architecture have a name (hierarchical?!). What are the known pros and cons?

• Is it normal to sometimes take a while to get even basic things working in software development?

  This is a little hard to explain because it's a really generic question, but bear with me... I find that when I am doing or recreating basic things from scratch (i.e. without the help of libraries), sometimes it feels as though I'm taking much more time to do the task than is actually needed. I am not new to programming or development & design concepts and have worked extensively with around 9 languages and various platforms and paradigms over 5/6 years. Although I don't yet have any academic qualification for programming and have learned almost exclusively from the Internet, I have been told that the quality of my code is excellent by those with qualifications. So, I don't think I'm a bad programmer because I really love doing it and working with software architecture, but maybe I'm slow? Or is it normal to take sometimes longer than it seems necessary to do basic tasks?

Now, let's say I decide to include a Javascript library which is GPL licensed: while I do not modify the downloaded JS file, I do write my own code making use of the library's functions.   Recently, Here at the company, more than one programmer was appointed in charge for a LightSwitch(C#) software development project and immediately there was a need of some sort of source control/sync. We have never used Team Foundation Server but we'd gladly use it if it's worth it. Is it the right tool to use for synchronising code between programmers? Does it have the needed features? • How to update all the installed software in Ubuntu without using any PPA?

  I've got many softwares installed. But when the new version is released I'm not getting notified from the application that an update is available. And I found that in most of Ubuntu applications the Update option is not available. I should wait for the next release for an updated version of the software. I've been updating Mozilla using the packages available from their PPA. In ubuntu is there any way to update the softwares without using any PPAs? Please don't recommend Build from source method since I don't like to do all those weird stuff like configuring the things manually etc.
