• A list of 'best practices' for extending the life between charges of a notebook battery.

  Hello Everyone, I'd like to compile a list of best practices for getting the most out of a single charge of a typical notebook battery (be it Li-Ion or Li-Poly). Sources would be great as well. I've heard, for instance, that the best things to do to improve battery performance (not the total lifetime of the battery, just single charge performance) are, in descending order of effectiveness: Turn your display all the way down. Turn off WiFi Turn off Bluetooth Spin down disks when they're not in use. etc… I'd like to get sources together for these and other tips for extending life-between-charge for any battery on any notebook (as these really are all about Demand Management rather than Life lime extension. • Chrome window controls in xubuntu 12.04

  I'm a long time ubuntu 10.04 LTS user, very used to having window controls on top left borders. New computer with new video card requires newer kernel. Unity doesn't suit and much googling turned up recommendations for xubuntu. Installed 12.04 and first aggravation is window controls at upper right a la Windows. No problem ... Settings Manager - Windows Manager - rearrange button layout Fixes everything until ... I abandoned firefox long ago because of memory leak issues and general fat. I fetch a current version of chrome (19.0.1084.52) and install. Once adblock is added and it's the default browser, everything's great. Except ... Alone among all applications, chrome will not honour the window manager's preferred button layout. Buttons are at upper right no matter what I try. Uninstall and then reinstall: nope. Trawl through /home/user/.config/google-chrome/* looking for a likely setting: nope. Search the web: nothing useful. How do I get chrome's window decoration in sync? Thanks very much for any and all help.

• MySQL Daemon failed to start

  THE SETUP I'm running Linux CentOS on an Amazon EC2 instance. The MySQL data files are on an EBS Drive mounted at /data/ ( symlink - /var/lib/mysql /data/mysql ). Everything works fine in this setup. THE PROBLEM I'm trying to move everything from this EBS drive to a new drive. I umounted the /data/ drive, and mounted it at /data2/. Then I mounted the new drive at /data/ and copied everything over to it from /data2/. Everything on the system works great, except MySQL. Every time I try to start the MySQL daemon ( /etc/init.d/mysqld start ) I get a MySQL Daemon failed to start error.

• How do you motivate peers to become better developers?

  In my experience there seems to be two kinds of developers (if we simplify matters a great deal of course). On the one hand we have the developers, who may do a perfectly acceptable job, but who do not really care about the computer science part of their craft. They usually know few languages / technologies and are happy to let things stay that way. For whatever reason, they don't try to improve their computer science skills unless this is required in their current position. On the other hand, we have the geeks or the pragmatic programmers if you subscribe to that idea. They play around with other languages and technologies and usually have knowledge about several topics outside the technical domain of their current job. I would like to see more developers, who are enthusiastic about software development. If you share this point of view, what do you do to push your peers in that direction? Edit: follow-up question inspired by one of the answers: As non-managers, should we really care about this? And why/why not?

• Visual Studio 2010 Pro Power Tools Screencast

  Microsoft just released the Visual Studio 2010 Pro Power Tools extension and it is awesome. A summary of all the features can be found here and it is available in the Visual Studio Gallery here. There are a bunch of great features but, in my opinion, the best one is the replacement for the Add Reference dialog. This gives sub-string search capabilities as well as the ability to add multiple references without having to continually re-open the dialog. For this feature alone, you should install the Pro Power Tools right now. There are a few blogs posts that do a good job describing all the features but what I wanted to do here was to post a quick screencast (7 minutes) that shows the features that I think are really cool. I show most (but not all) of the features focusing on the ones I think are the best. • C++ Numerical Recipes &ndash; A New Adventure!

  I am about to embark on a great journey – over the next 6 weeks I plan to read through C++ Numerical Recipes 3rd edition http://amzn.to/YtdpkS I'll be reading this with an eye to C++ AMP, thinking about implementing the suitable subset (non-recursive, additive, commutative) to run on the GPU. APIs supporting HPC, GPGPU or MapReduce are all useful – providing you have the ability to choose the correct algorithm to leverage on them. I really think this is the most fascinating area of programming – a lot more exciting than LOB CRUD !!! When you think about it , everything is a function – we categorize & we extrapolate. As abstractions get higher & less leaky, sooner or later information systems programming will become a non-programmer task – you will be using WYSIWYG designers to build: GUIs MVVM service mapping & virtualization workflows ORM Entity relations In the data source SharePoint / LightSwitch are not there yet, but every iteration gets closer. For information workers, managed code is a race to the bottom. As MS futures are a bit shaky right now, the provider agnostic nature & higher barriers of entry of both C++ & Numerical Analysis seem like a rational choice to me. Its also fascinating – stepping outside the box. This is not the first time I've delved into numerical analysis. 6 months ago I read Numerical methods with Applications, which can be found for free online: http://nm.mathforcollege.com/ 2 years ago I learned the .NET Extreme Optimization library www.extremeoptimization.com – not bad 2.5 years ago I read Schaums Numerical Analysis book http://amzn.to/V5yuLI - not an easy read, as topics jump back & forth across chapters: 3 years ago I read Practical Numerical Methods with C# http://amzn.to/V5yCL9 (which is a toy learning language for this kind of stuff) I also read through AI a Modern Approach 3rd edition END to END http://amzn.to/V5yQSp - this took me a few years but was the most rewarding experience.   It’s great to be back in Sao Paulo. I’m looking forward to a another buzzing JavaOne LAD conference and the energy of the Latin American Java community! • Java.net Reborn

  Java.net, the home of  Java community projects, has been re-launched with a new look and new tools for developers.  The move from CollabNet to the Kenai infrastructure offers more flexibility for developers who want to host or contribute to community projects.  Instead of the large, fixed infrastructure per project (for example, several mailing lists per project), Kenai's ala carte features allow users to take only what they need. "We will continue to have the great mix of blogs, forums, and editorial content as well as new tools on the project side, including Mercurial, Git, and JIRA for developers," Java.net Community Manager Sonya Barry explains.  The migration was huge effort. Over 1400 projects were migrated (and some 30 projects are left to go). A large part of the migration was a big cleanup of abandoned projects. With the high abandonment rate of open source projects, the was a lot to remove. The new java.net site is smaller, faster and now the percentage of good, current content is much higher. • Dell U271 monitor DisplayPort suddenly not working

  My new(ish) Dell U271 took a bit of a knock and it now suddenly doesn't recognise the Macbook plugged into it via DisplayPort - this had been working great for several months up until now. When I "Scan Sources", it doesn't find anything on DisplayPort. However, one suspicious behaviour leads me to think all might not be lost. When the Mac is woken from sleep, this used to kick the monitor in (as an monitor would) and while it no longer does that, the light on the monitor does go from standby orange to blue briefly, then the monitor says it's going into "power save" mode. It seems like it gets some kinda signal. Any ideas on how I can diagnose the problem? I'm trying to find another mac but no one near me has one ...

• Out of sync audio / video in 10.6.2 Snow leopard

  I have a PC with OSX86 on it. (10.6.2) Under Leopard my videos worked great, but now with VLC the audio is all garbled and video is way too fast. In Quicktime X video is too fast. MPlayer OSX Extended plays videos fine, but doesn't support many codecs. I have a Geforce 9800 GTX with qe ci ocl... If theres no solution, then are thereany other players for osx that support a lot of codecs? I don't like Windows so that's not an option. Thanks

• Is there any way to access the mp3 or other file type tags from within an ipod touch/iphone?

  I am just looking for an existing app that will let me read all the tags that are stored in a particular song on my ipod touch/iphone. I'm not much of a programmer, but would be willing to learn the iphone sdk (on windows) if I could build a program that would do this for me. I would love to be able to modify the tag while on the iphone, but just viewing them would be a great use to me. I'd like to read the Year tag, the comments tag, composer, etc. It's so annoying that I can't do this. Or can I already and I just don't know how. Yes, I know how to view the lyrics tag. • How to display/add play button on youtube image ?

  Hi all I am working in one project in wordpress environment and I have the opportunity to work with youtube video, fancybox etc. I have embedded the youtube image from youtube server which is "http://img.youtube.com/vi/0.jpg", now there is no play button shows up on middle of the image as we see usually any youtube videos! • Unity Greeter login screen cuts off login options

  I have a pretty newly installed Ubuntu 12.04, using Unity. My external monitor is 1920x1080 max resolution. In the Unity desktop itself everything looks great. I have an NVidia graphics card. When I start my computer and get to the Unity greeter login screen the display is oddly formatted and the resolution seems off. It looks like a zoomed view on the larger 1920x1080 screen. As such it crops the login options off to the left hand side of the screen. So I can only just see the edge of the password box for the user I want to log in with. I can log in with one account by default by blindly typing the password, but I am unable to switch to other accounts. Is there anything I can do to fix the log in screen display so that I can see the normal login options? Note: I first noticed it when I changed my desktop background and the next time I logged in I saw the issue.

• SPUtility.SendMail and the 2048 Character Limit

  We were in the middle of testing a web part responsible for gathering information from visitors to our Client's website and emailing it to someone responsible for responding to the request.  During testing, however, it was brought to our attention that the message was cutting off at 2048 characters.  Now, 2048 is one of those numbers that is usually indicative of some computational limit, but I was hopeful that Microsoft had thought through the possibility of emailing more than 2048 characters from SharePoint.  Luckily I was right. and wrong. As it turns out, SPUtility.SendMail is not limited to any specific character limit as far as I can tell.  However, each LINE of text that you send via SendMail cannot exceed 2048 characters.  Since we were sending an HTML email it was constructed entirely without line breaks, far exceeding the 2048 character limit and ultimately helping to educate me about this obscure technical limitation whose only benefit thus far is offering me something to rant about on my blog.  The fix is simple, just put in a carriage return and a line break often enough to avoid going past the 2048 character limit.  I'm sure someone can present a great technical reason for the 2048 character limit, but it seems fairly arbitrary since the "\r\n" that got appended to the string are ultimately just characters too.

• Google Docs: Tie the Form with a Spreadsheet to email addresses and responses?

  Hello. I'm just trying to figure out if I'm doing something wrong or it's not possible. I created a small form ( I'm trying to get current mailing addresses from my friends and relatives - since I lost my address book) and it ties to a Google Spreadsheet. I sent out a sample to my work address - filled out a form and saved it. However when I go to see the responses - in a spreadsheet - it has a time stamp but it has no email associated with a response - so I don't know who made it ( well in this case I know it's me - but when you have 100 replies?) I understand - it may be great for anonymous surveys - but in this case I'd like to know who responded with what - and I don't wan to make them fill out Email and First Name & Last Name - I already have this information. Any suggestions?

  i got an email from google a couple of hours ago (around 12AM EST today) that Google's TiSP service is now available in my area. this seems like a great deal compared to my cUrrent 16Mbps cable coNction at work, however i'm a lIttle nervous about the fact that linux support is "Coming soon". i was wOndering if anyone had successfully installed this system and gotten it woRking with their linux infrastructure? I'm assuming that there shouldn't be any issues siNce we have an ASA in front of our internet. TiSP Shouldn't care what is behind that. Any insight would be greatly appreciated!

• Personalized Pricing

  In past postings I've spent a fair amount of time talking about targeted promotions.  Using a complete view of the customer that includes purchase history, location history, and psychographics gleaned from social media, we can select the offer with the greatest chance of redemption.  This is done to influence shopping behavior, which might be introducing the consumer to a new product line, increasing their basket size, increasing frequency of purchases, etc. Safeway seems to be taking a slightly different approach with their personalized pricing.  In additional to offering electronic coupons and club card offers, they are also providing a personalized price for certain items based on purchase history.  So when Sally want to shop at Safeway, she first checks the "Just for U" website for three types of deals.  She starts by selecting manufacturer coupons to load into her loyalty card, then she checks the Club Card for offers like "buy one get one free." The third step is the interesting one.  Safeway will set a particular lower price for Sally good for 90 days on items she buys often.  Clearly this isn't enforcing a new behavior but rather instilling loyalty.  I would love to know exactly how they are determining the personalized price.  Of course bargain hunters can still stack the three offers so they can, for example, get their $4.99 Oatmeal for $0.72. I like this particular question and answer from their website's FAQ: My offers are not that great. Can I tell you what offers I need? That's a good idea. That functionality is not currently available, but we appreciate your input and are constantly improving our just for U program. Stay tuned for exciting enhancements! I suppose if Safeway is tracking all the purchases, they can easily determine whether the customer if profitable.  As long as the customer stays profitable, why not let them determine a few offers themselves?  Food for thought.

• Simple collision detection for pong

  I'm making a simple pong game, and things are great so far, but I have an odd bug which causes my ball (well, it's a box really) to get stuck on occasion when detecting collision against the ceiling or floor. It looks as though it is trying to update too frequently to get out of the collision check. Basically the box slides against the top or bottom of the screen from one paddle to the other, and quickly bounces on and off the wall while doing so, but only bounces a few pixels from the wall. What can I do to avoid this problem? It seems to occur at random.
