• Should my colleagues review each others code from source control system?

  Hi everybody. So that's my story: one of my colleagues uses to review all the code, hosted to revision system. I'm not speaking about adequate review of changes in parts that he belongs to. He watches the code file to file, line to line. Every new file and every modified. I feel just like being spied on! My guess is that if code was already hosted to control system, you should trust it as workable at least. My question is, maybe I'm just too paranoiac and practice of reviewing each others code is good? P.S: We're team of only three developers, and I fear that if there will be more of us, colleague just won't have time to review all the the code we'll write.

• What should I learn to create web-services like ones listed? [closed]

  I am very inspired by websites like imgur, dropbox, screencloud, maybe w3schools...you get my point. Fresh web-services with some new idea, not big portals but something simple yet useful and used by many people, something simple and new. What aspects of my developer career should I focus to be able to build such things on my own if I have enough ideas? (Sure if it ends up being popular I can get more developers to help me and so on, but at first I can do it alone, right?) I am currently a PHP web-developer, I know HTML+CSS+JS+AJAX+JQuery. But even like that there still is web-design, there are a lot of paths: websites for enterprise, startups, webservices, entertainment websites and serious bank/document flow systems, frameworks used for big systems, different approaches for little ones, etcetcetc. Which path should I take to be able to start my own projects like the ones that I listed on top which inspire me?

• SEO optimisation problems after Google Panda [on hold]

  I am currently trying to improve a website's SEO after it took quite a hit from the Google Panda upgrades. What are the main things I need to look at improving when trying to improve its ranking in Google? I have already made sure that the pages validate to W3C Standards, minimized css and js and done the obvious meta tags and header optimization but this hasn't made any difference yet. It could possibly be a content issue as the pages currently read much like a brochure and there were some pages with just a video and no text content on them which is also an issue. I've added a rel="nofollow" attribute to the links to these pages although i'm told this doesn't really work anymore. If anyone has any ideas let me know. Cheers!

Maybe, some of old games were released as free or open source (I'm interested in the graphical assets only)? I heard something about Red Alert been released as free, but I'm not sure if it's permitted to reuse graphical assets in such manner. Do You know such games? Another question - can You please share Your thoughts, rough estimate - how much it will cost to pay an artist to create graphics similar to HoM&M 2?

• Apple Magic Trackpad multitouch configuration

  Today I installed the Ubuntu 10.10 release on my Desktop PC. I was running Ubuntu 10.04 LTS with an Apple Magic Trackpad and everything was working fine. After today's fresh installation of Ubuntu 10.10, I don't see my Apple Magic Trackpad's multitouch working. Two-finger scrolling and three-finger third mouse button clicking are completely broken. Has anyone else experienced a similar issue? Has anyone had success with Ubuntu 10.10 and an Apple Magic TrackPad? Please help me to fix this issue. Your help is highly appreciated...

• Transparency in XNA-4 primitives

  I'm using XNA 4 with Visual Studio 2010. I'm trying to create a simple 3D world with walls and doors in which the user to free to roam around. A wall is just a rectangle which is currently being rendered with four vertices using triangle strips. But to create a door, I'd have to split it into three rectangles as shown in the figure. Four quadrilaterals if I want to have the following door-style It will become more complex to have multiple doors on the same wall or if I have windows. Is there any shorter way to handle this? I am looking for something that will just make the wall transparent wherever I want. I found a solution but facing a problem here

• How does the GPL work in regards to languages like Dart which compile to other languages?

  Google's Dart language is not supported by any Web Browsers other than a special build of Chromium known as Dartium. To use Dart for production code you need to run it through a Dart-JavaScript compiler/translator and then use the outputted JavaScript in your web application. Because JavaScript is an interpreted language everyone who receives the "binary"(Aka, the .js file) has also received the source code. Now, the GNU General Public License v3.0 states that: "The “source code” for a work means the preferred form of the work for making modifications to it." Which would imply that the original Dart code in addition to the JavaScript code must also be provided to the end user. Does this mean that any web applications written in Dart must also provide the original Dart code to all visitors of their website even though a copy of the source code has already been provided in a human readable/writable/modifiable form?

  Have you ever wondered if the site you’re visiting is powered by WordPress or if the webapp you’re using is powered by Ruby on Rails?  With these extensions for Google Chrome, you’ll never have to wonder again. Geeks love digging under the hood to see what makes their favorite apps and sites tick.  But opening the “View Source” window today doesn’t tell you everything there is to know about a website.  Plus, even if you can tell what CMS is powering a website from its source, it can be tedious to dig through lines of code to find what you’re looking for.  Also, the HTML code never tells you what web server a site is running on or what version of PHP it’s using.  With three extensions for Google Chrome you’ll never have to wonder again.  Note that some sites may not give as much information, but still, you’ll find enough data from most sites to be interesting. Discover Web Frameworks and Javascript Libraries with Chrome Sniffer If you want to know what CMS is powering a site or if it’s using Google Analytics or Quantcast, this is the extension for you.  Chrome Sniffer (link below) identifies over 40 different frameworks, and is constantly adding more.  It shows the logo of the main framework on the site on the left of your address bar.  Here wee see Chrome Sniffer noticed that How-To Geek is powered by WordPress.   Click the logo to see other frameworks on the site.  We can see that the site also has Google Analytics and Quantcast.  If you want more information about the framework, click on its logo and the framework’s homepage will open in a new tab. As another example, we can see that the Tumblr Staff blog is powered by Tumblr (of course), the Discus comment system, Quantcast, and the Prototype JavaScript framework. Or here’s a site that’s powered by Drupal, Google Analytics, Mollom spam protection, and jQuery.  Chrome Sniffer definitely uncovers a lot of neat stuff, so if you’re into web frameworks you’re sure to enjoy this extension. Find Out What Web Server The Site is Running On Want to know whether the site you’re looking at is running on IIS or Appache?  The Web Server Notifier extension for Chrome (link below) lets you easily recognize the web server a site is running on by its favicon on the right of the address bar.  Click the icon to see more information. Some web servers will show you a lot of information about their server, including version, operating system, PHP version, OpenSSL version, and more. Others will simply tell you their name. If the site is powered by IIS, you can usually tell the version of Windows Server its running on since the IIS versions are specific to a version of Windows.  Here we see that Microsoft.com is running on the latest and greatest – Windows Server 2008 R2 with IIS 7.5. Discover Web Technologies Powering Sites Wondering if a webapp is powered by Ruby on Rails or ASP.NET?  The Web Technology Notifier extension for Chrome (link below), from the same developer as the Web Server Notifier, will let you easily discover the backend of a site.  You’ll see the technology’s favicon on the right of your address bar, and, as with the other extension, can get more information by clicking the icon. Here we can see that Backpack from 37signals is powered by the Phusion Passenger module to run Ruby on Rails.   Microsoft’s new Docs.com Office Online apps is powered by ASP.NET…   And How-To Geek has PHP running to power WordPress. • How to detect if a placement would be empty (Doubleclick for Publishers)?

  I want to use DFP for my ads. To display an ad I am calling GA_googleFillSlot(). My understanding of this is, that this function injects the ad code at the position where the JS call is placed. How can I detect if the placement is empty, e.g. no banner code will be injected because there is currently no banner. I need to know because the surrounding html needs to be adapted. Any ideas? Edit: Alternatively, is it possible to alter the injected html elements? DFP injects a div with id="google_ads_div_$PLACEMENT_ID". Is it possible to add a class attribute?

• What to choose API based server or Socket based server for data driven application

  I am working on a project which has a Desktop Application for MAC/COCOA, a native application for iPhone another native application in iPad. All the application do almost same thing. The applications are data driven applications. Every communication to server is made via a restful API developed in PHP. When a user logs in a lot of data is fetched from server. And to remain in sync with server pooling is done. As there are lot of data to pool it makes application slower and un-reliable. A possible solution that comes into my mind is to use Socket based server. My question is that will it reasonably improve the performance? And which technology (of sockets) will be good as a server side solution for data driven application? I have heard a lot about Node.js. Please give your suggestions.

• Keyboard shortcuts get randomly reset

  I'm facing a rather weird issue in the past few days after doing a clean install of Ubuntu Oneiric (w/ gnome-shell) on my recently-bought Asus U36SD. I set up my keyboard shortcuts using System Settings Keyboard Shortcuts, and some of them get randomly reset. Most of my shortcuts include the win key (otherwise listed in the keyboard shortcuts as Mod4), but those containing only Mod4 + get reset every two-three reboots. For instance, Mod4 + T (for terminal), gets reset to the standard Ctrl + Alt + T, while Shift + Mod4 + W (for browser) doesn't (I've set up the latter with the Shift key, because it seems that Mod4 + W didn't get intercepted at all. Something similar goes for Mod4 + E for gedit, which only worked once or twice). I have no idea if this is a Ubuntu specific issue, or it's related to gnome-shell or even with my current hardware. Has this happened to any of you? If so, did you manage to fix it?

• How to reset settings when Unity won't finish booting?

  I have a new 12.04 installation and I messed things up after trying to move /home to an NTFS partition, which I later learned was a bad idea. I removed references to the NTFS partition on fstab and created new users on the ext4 / partition. Now I can't get Unity to start up properly for any user. I get the GUI with only three Launch icons (none of which are clickable) and no bar at the top. The keyboard seems to the nonfunctional after I enter my credentials. The interesting thing is that I can boot when I go through recovery mode and select resume. I wonder whether I am creating the new users properly. What is the correct protocol for doing so in order to ensure that they can run Unity?

• Removing existing filtered pages from Google's index: noindex / 301 / canonical to non-filtered page?

  I've decided to remove some of my site's pages from the Google index to focus more of the indexed pages on higher quality pages. The pages I'm going to remove are already in the index. These removed pages are filtered pages which will continue to exist, I just don't want them in the google index because they add little quality to the same page without any filter selected. I've added in webmaster tools specification of narrow for the parameters that set these filters, but it doesn't seem this changes anything in how he handles these pages. So I'm considering three options: Adding <meta name="robots" content="noindex" /> to the html header of these filtered pages 301 to the non-filtered page that contains the most similar information and will remain in the index Canonical tag. Which I'm not sure is exactly the mainstream use case, as these aren't really the same pages. Which should I use?

  I guess I've got more than one ubuntu installation (either two or three) along with a windows 7 installation. Each of the ubuntu installations also list something extra (maybe like a safe mode?) within grub. Firstly, how do I remove the ubuntu installations I don't use? (how do I first identify the one I do use? I log into it after booting it, but how do I delete the others) Also, how do I leave just a Windows 7 option and an Ubuntu option?

• Organizing ASP.Net Single Page Application with Nancy

  As a personal project, I'm creating a single page, asp.net web application using Nancy to provide RESTful services to the single page. Due to the complexity of the single page, particularly the JavaScripts used, I've think creating a dedicated project for the client side of web development and another for service side will organize and simplify the development. solution | +-- web / client side (single html page, js, css) | - contains asp.net project, and nancy library | to host the modules in application project folder | +-- application / service (nancy modules, bootstrap for other layer) | . . . and other layers (three tier, domain driven, etc) . Is this a good way of organizing a complex single page application? Am I over-engineering the web app, incurring too much complexity?

• Project development without experience

  I'm a web developer who is part of a three-man team that has been tasked with a rather large and complex development project. Other than some direction and impetus from management, we're pretty much on our own to develop the new website. None of us have any project management experience nor do my two coworkers seem like they would be interested in taking on that role, so I feel like it's up to me to implement some kind of structure to the development process in order to avoid issues down the road. My question is: what can I do as a developer without project managment experience to ensure that our project gets developed successfully and avoid the pitfalls of developing a project without a plan?
