• Looking for open-source solutions for a knowledge sharing website

  There is a need in my workplace to setup a knowledge sharing site, a place where users can discuss projects they are working share documentation ask questions I am looking for a open-source system that answers these needs, and that can be setup in a week, and requires only PHP and MySQL. I am a Wordpress fan and developer and could easily implement such a system in Wordpress, however this system needs to be very simple to use for the technically challenged. Without customization, Wordpress users would still need to login to the "back-end" to post. I like the Stackexchange (OSQA) format, but these do not allow for file uploading out of the box. I do not have experience with Buddy Press, would this be an alternative?

  Is there an easier way to wait for an element to load ( by independant script/mootools/other ). For example: I am waiting for a google map to load, but I don't want to use its API for checks. So I made two functions: function checkIfexist() { if(jQuery('#container').length) return 0; else reload(1); } function reload(mode) { setTimeout(function(){ do stuff . . . if(mode==1) checkIfexist(); }, 400); } I am starting it with reload(1); Is there an easier way to use setTimeout in such a way? I don't want to use delay, wait or whatever.

• SimpleViewer + lightbox

  Is it possible to integrate any kind of Lightbox with SimpleViewer? But I don't want to display SimpleViewer in Lightbox. I want to Lightbox show when I click on one of the images in SimpleViewer. Does anyone tried that with success? EDIT I have a SimpleViewer page now. I just want to bind handler to clicking an image (as normally in HTML based pages), fetch big image url and show that image (not SimpleViewer!) in Ligthbox/ThickBox/FancyBox etc.

Godaddy's staff said there is nothing they can do to prevent that site cloning the look and feel of my site. Is there anything I can do to stop another site from effectively cloning my site? I recently tried A Small Orange, whose GUI was not compelling, and I quickly learned to loathe c panel. I looked into using GoDaddy, but reviews of their service have been very negative. I was satisfied with iPower's control panel, so something similar would be appropriate. • Cloud just for hosting big files?

  I need a solution to store my big files (50MB+ each). Currently I am using an european dedicated server (100MBits) with 8000GB/motnh at 60USD. I would like to use a cloud service that autmatically fetches my files from my server the first time users request it (like a classic cdn) (So I can have all files stored within 1 server) I was looking at Amazon CloudFront and, to get the same bandwidth 8'000 GB/month, I have to pay like 2000 USD vs my 60 USD of my dedicated server. Is there a cheaper alternative?

• SEO and search result changes when switching to SSL on Joomla site?

  I am thinking about purchasing an SSL certificate for a website. The most noticeable difference for the user would be the http now becomes https and there is that lock icon in most browsers. Will there be any adverse affects on the website's current SEO or recognition by search engines when I make the switch? Also this is a Joomla site, which has an option in the settings to use SSL. It is supposed to make it easier but not sure if it takes care of everything. Thanks!

• How can you identify duplicate CSS rules?

  I'm not talking about used/unused here. I have two stylesheets and some rules differ (either in selectors, rules or both) and some are exactly the same. So I'm looking for a way to extract and move those rules, which are the same in both files, into a third stylesheet. In other words: an intersection of two stylesheets. Strangely, I couldn't find a software for this. Would have expected this to be a more common problem. Background, for those who care: I'm converting a desktop website into a mobile one and I've started by duplicating the desktop stylesheet and changing it (throwing stuff out, adding to it).

• Are there disadvantages an literal + instead of an encoded + (%2B) in an URL?

  A client of mine has a product ending with a plus-sign (e.g. Google+) and would like the webpage of this product to have an URL that is human-readable (i.e. an URL that doesn't contain %2B). Since our projects use the following .htaccess RewriteRule RewriteRule ^(.*)$ index.php?$1 it is possible to use an urlencoded space in an URL like that. However, while the url would read like /google+, the actual meaning of the URL would be /google[space]. (The markup won't let me place a real space there.) Now my concern is that this would have disadvantages for SEO. Is this concern valid and/or are there other culprits to this approach?

• Is the php method md5() secure? Can it be used for passwords? [migrated]

  So executing a php script causes the form values to be sent to the server, and then they are processed. If you want to store a password in your db than you want it to be a cryptographic hash(so your client side is secure, can you generate an md5 using php securely( without submitting the user:password pair in the clear), or is there an alternative standard method of doing this, without having the unecrypted pasword leaving the clients machine? Sorry if this is a stupid question I'm kind of new at this. I think this can be done somehow using https, and on that note if a site's login page does not use https, does that mean that while the databse storage is secure, the transportation is not?

• Is it possible to grant access to a folder in a SVN server using SVN's API?

  I need to develop a web application (Using any language but I'm familiar with Frameworks Symfony2 and Rails), that is able to grant access to a user to a determined folder on another server on the same network from the application's front-end. I found out that SVN has an API and that I could interact with it with PHP or Ruby (Apparently), although I would be willing to program the application on another language, the server where the files are stored is using Windows and I thought on using Virtual SVN server, however I can't find any function on the API to grant users access to files and/or folders or access of any kind, like you usually do using the GUI (VirtualSVN on Windows). Am I missing anything? Is this even possible?

  Possible Duplicate: Titles in Google results contain spammy prefixes I have a webshop online and I have some problems with redirecting from Google. Case 1 When I Google for my site at google.com in Iron SWR (safe Chrome version) and I click the first link I get the correct page. Case 2 When I Google for my site at google.nl in Iron SWR (safe Chrome version) and I click the first link Google will redirect me to a spam site. Case 3 When I Google for my site in Google Chrome and I click the first link Google will redirect me to a spam site. Case 4 When I Google for my site in FireFox and I click the first link Google will redirect me to a spam site. Case 5 When I Google for my site in Internet Explorer and I click the first link Google will redirect me a page that tells me the site is offline. HELP WHAT TO DO? I checked the .htaccess but this file is correct. I checked the index.php file but this one is also correct. What can I do? Hacked or does Google has trouble?

• Do I really need to remove special characters in a URL?

  I have an FTP account shared with friends where we upload underground music albums and then we use the links to share the downloads in a music forum. The problem is that the album names are in french so there is a lot of special characters in the name. So the URL looks like http://www.mydomain.com/downloads/Some Band - En français avec des caractères spéciaux (2013) [7'' EP].zip For me it works perfectly and I can download the file by using this URL, but I have read everywhere that special chars are bad in URL. Is there any reason why I must remove the special characters or encode the URL? Is everyone able to access a URL with special characters or will some older browsers not be able to download the files? I really don't care about SEO or anything else. I just want the download links to work for everyone. Since the files are uploaded through FTP, I can't use PHP to remove the special characters with a regex, so I really don't know what to do.

• When Google gives up recrawling 301 that led to 404?

  I've transferred a domain and made a mistake in the redirects (the URL structure is identical). Even though they went to the new domain, the error caused a 404 when crawled by Google bot. 10 days after I saw and corrected my redirect mistake, and now the site should (hopefully) redirect to proper pages. Q1: The URLs of the 404 pages in the Webmaster Tools all bear the mistake and will never be available at the new site. I marked them as fixed in the tools. Do I need to do something about that, like 301 rewrite them with a condition to fix the error? Q2: Does Google bot attempt to recrawl 301 pages that pointed to a 404?

• VPNs - The ins and outs of IPSec & VPNs in general [on hold]

  I have to decided to mess around with VPNs on my home router, to access a couple of servers in the back room of my house, however, I went into this thinking happy thoughts and easy-peasy-lemon-squeezy... Now I feel like doing drugs, as if maybe that will help me understand the myriad of terms which come with this nifty little tool. Basically, I do understand WHAT a VPN is, but I have no idea how to set one up. I have a Cisco router ( will supply more info if needed ), and would prefer to use IPSec for this ordeal. I'd like to have the following terms explained ( and yes, I have used the famous Google to help, close but no cigar ) : "Local Secure Group", "Remote Secure Group", "Remote Secure Gateway", how different types of "Keys" work ( again, I know the basics ), and for the "Add VPN Config" screen on the connecting device: "Server, does it have to be an address, or just an IP?", "Account; is this the tunnel name?", I am going to assume 'Password' means the Key, "Group Name; or is THIS the tunnel name?", and "Secret; I halfish know what this is..." I would really appreciate any contribution made, no matter how small, even if it includes a redirect. I just want to learn. Thanks in advance! Magus

• Images from remote source - is it possible or is really a bad practice?

  I'm building a management system for websites and I had an idea related to image galleries that I'm not sure it's a good approach. Since images might need good deals of space depending on how much images a user uploads an so on, I thought on using cloud services like dropbox, mega and google drive to store images and load then when needed. The obvious problem is that for me this seems a useless solution because it would be slow to download the images from the remote source, making the user experience not so good. Is there any way to save images of a image gallery on remote source without getting the user experience bad because of speed? Or this is really not a good practice?

• What is the best taxonomy from Google's perspective?

  I was wondering what the best way is to structure a new website in Google's eyes. Currently, it contains two top-level categories (X & Y), and clicking a term under either one will result in the URL: www.nameofsite.com/X/X type term, or /Y/Y type term Technically, it is correct to group all "X type terms" under X and "Y type terms" under Y, but we could probably be more granular and break all articles into 5-6 top-level categories by breaking Y up into more specific categories. Given that the current URL structure will eventually result in 1000's of "X type terms" and "Y type terms" under just two top-level categories, would it be more advisable to have several of these, as suggested? • Redesigning my website has destroyed my SEO

  Unfortunately i read an article on how to avoid destroying your websites SEO from a redesign article AFTER its was too late! We get ALL our customers from our website as we do not have a shop. Since that dreaded day a month ago the phone pretty much stopped, basically no emails, Google rankings down and Google analytics have halved by 50%. Yesterday i did some research into as as i had no idea that a re-design of a website could have such a damaging effect - yes i am a novice and use a WYSIWYG type web builder. There are lots of info on how to AVOID this from happening BUT what do i do as i have already made the mistake? Yesterday i reloaded my OLD site with my new pages in the background hoping this would be a start. I really have no idea of how to get out of this mess. Please please help. Thanks in Advance. • Is it possible to force a tab/window to take focus without an alert()? [migrated]

  I've been working to solve some form / session timeout issues on our site. I'd like to get the users attention BEFORE this happens so that they don't lose data that they've entered into long forms. I'm using jquery's .get to confirm with my server when the users session is set to timeout, and warn them 5 minutes before then. I've found that if I pop an alert(), it will bring the focus back to that tab / page -- but this seems 'heavy handed'. Is there a better way to do this?

• What kind of redirect (301 or 302) for an email links tracker?

  We are developing an email sending application ("à la" Mailchimp). Hyperlinks inserted by our users, in the emails they want to send, are replaced by a tracking URL on our application (https://ourdomain.com/trackingurl?blablabla) which then redirects the email reader to the original URL our users included in their emails. This allows us to record statistics about link clicks. Until now, we used 301 for those redirections, but we noticed that Google began indexing pages on our application which are in fact redirects to other domains. (The title and snippet in Google results are from the other domain, but the link in green is from our application). We took action by adding those urls to our robots.txt, but Google seems to take forever (months!) before removing them for its index and removing them by hand in Webmaster Tools would take a lot of time since there are lot. I would like to know which kind of HTTP redirect (301 or 302) is best suited for this kind of opreation ? Do you think switching to 302 redirects could improve this situation since we don't really want Google to index redirected links from our clients emails ?

We would be building a Facebook application in Django (Python), but still not sure of where to host it economically, and with a good provision to scale in case the app gets viral. Some details about the app: Would be HTML based like a website,using django as a framework. 100K is the number of expected pageviews in a day, if the app is viral. The users will not generate any media content, only some database data will be generated by them. It would be great if someone with more experience can guide on following points: A) Hosting on Google app engine or Amazon EC2 or some other cloud like RackSpace : Preferable points found in AppEngine were ease of deployment, cost effectiveness and easy scaling. For EC2: Full hold of the virtual machine,Amazon NoSQL and RDMBS database services in case we decide to use them. B) Does backend technology affect monthly cost? eg. would CPU and memory usage difference of Django over , for example , PHP framework like CodeIgnitor really make remarkable difference in running costs. • Unable to access media wiki pages from another computer?

  I have set up a web server in my Windows 7 with easyPHP. The website works fine when I browse the locally via localhost or 127.0.0.1. But, unable to open the site from another computer which is in the same LAN or in connected to my LAN. My local IP is in the 10.x.x.x range. The firewall turned off on my private network. I've also tried by changing Listen 127.0.0.1:80 to Listen 80 In httpd.conf but still i'm unable to access the media wiki from other machines. Unable to browse the pages from other machines using localhost or using IP address (Ex: 10.x.x.x). Could you please let me know your suggestions and comments?
