• How can Windows XP/7 users cleanly connect to Mac OS X Server 10.9.4 Mavericks with Active Directory integration?

  I’m a Linux/Unix systems admin who also manages a Macintosh server infrastructure & there is a lone Mac Mini in the mix running 10.9.4 that I would like Windows XP & Windows 7 users to connect to with little or no hassle. The problem? Windows users can’t seem to even get to the point of a password prompt yet connect. Mind you this server replaced a Mac OS X 10.6.8 server that had issues, but never had issues with Windows users connected. The gist of this post is: The tons of different messages out there about Mac OS X 10.9.4 Samba support are mind-numbingly confusing. Can anyone share some solid specifics here? I’ve read pieces like this one here that suggest turning off file sharing & then adding a share with AFP/SMB enabled would work. But the suggestion seems to apply to 10.8. And from what I know a lot has changed in Samba support in 10.9 let alone the iterations to 10.9.4. Then I found this great tutorial here that explains things step-by-step. Which seems like it should work, but the problem is the example given applies to a local user created on the Mac when I would like users in an Active Directory group—which the Mac is bound to—access the Mac Mini shares. There are also tons of great tips here on MacWindows.com but nothing seems solid to the issue I am facing. So from what I am reading these are my options: Local User Versus Active Directory: Setup a common local user on the Mac OS X 10.9.4 server to be used for Samba sharing since Active Directory won’t work. Is this really the case? Because loss of AD integration is a major pain. Do Extended File Attributes Get Retained from Windows Users: If this were to work, how do extended attributes come into play? Loss of metadata & related info is not an option. How Fragile is Any of this to Updates: How does any of this shake out with Mac OS X updates as well as Windows updates? Installing Official, Open Source Samba: Would upgrading the Samba install on the server to the official open source Samba via a package like SMBUp or via the Hombrew method described here help or make the issue worse? I fully understand there have historically been issues in mixed environments, but nowadays Windows users connecting to a Mac seem to have a truly hellish road ahead of them. Unless I am missing something?

• How to restore jump list for Windows Explorer pinned taskbar icon?

  I pinned Windows Explorer's icon to my taskbar months ago, and all worked fine, including jump lists. Note: I changed the default Explorer's folder using the usual trick of changing the GUID in the shortcut. Now, all of a sudden, the jump list is empty, and dropping folders on the pinned icon does not produce any effect, nor recently-opened folders show up in the list (although in the taskbar options I made sure to have it remember recently open items). How can I restore the original functionality, given that all other pinned applications jump lists work correctly? I'm running Windows 7 Ultimate x64, updated with the latest patches. The OS is in US English and my locale is Italian-Italy.

• Can I monitor active user count on my iis sites?

  We are having problems with performance on our server that host our websites that the processor gets upp to 90%. I would like to monitor the amount of users active on your sites that are published on the iis. My question, is this possible? is there any software for this? EDIT current (like this second) visitor count on all the active websites on our iis REASON FOR THIS if i can get the visitor amount on the days the CPU is not overloaded and and compare it to the days it is then i atleast know that this CAN be a reason why this is happening and i can take it from there. Otherwise i can focus on the code on the sites, or maybe google crawler is causing this, there are manythings that can cause this you know? for me this is just a simple way of troubleshooting.

  After issued command to stop pptpd, the pptpd won't stop until all the VPN client has disconnected. • Word 97 installed with Outlook XP - Cannot use Word for default editor from Windows Explorer.

  I am using Outlook 2002 (Office XP Update) with Word 97 and Excel 97. (The reason is that Microsoft refused to activate my legit copy of office 2003 when I got a new motherboard, Word XP crashed too much, and I prefer the newer Outlook. I would rather not send Microsoft more money to upgrade since they refuse to activate what I've already purchased. Please don't recommend an upgrade.) Now, I can tell Windows Explorer to use Word 97 to open, for example, a .txt file. But whenever I try to open the text file from Explorer, it either (a) started the Windows XP installer, or (b) tells me that the .txt file is an invalid Win32 application. Is there some way to straighten out the registry without reinstalling Windows XP? Excel 97 and Outlook 2002 are working fine.

• How to Remove Extensions From, and Force the Trailing Slash at the End of URLs?

  Example of current file structure: example.com/foo.php example.com/bar.html example.com/directory/ example.com/directory/foo.php example.com/directory/bar.html example.com/cgi-bin/directory/foo.cgi I would like to remove HTML, PHP and CGI extensions from, and then force the trailing slash at the end of URLs. So, it could look like this: example.com/foo/ example.com/bar/ example.com/directory/ example.com/directory/foo/ example.com/directory/bar/ example.com/cgi-bin/directory/foo/ I am very frustrated because I've searched for 17 hours straight for solution and visited more than a few hundred pages on various blogs and forums. I'm not joking. So I think I've done my research. Here is the code that sits in my .htaccess file right now: RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-d RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME}\.html -f RewriteRule ^(([^/]+/)*[^./]+)/$ $1.html RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-f RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-d RewriteCond %{REQUEST_URI} !(\.[a-zA-Z0-9]|/)$ RewriteRule (.*)$ /$1/ [R=301,L] As you can see, this code only removes .html (and I'm not very happy with it because I think it could be done a lot simpler). I can remove the extension from PHP files when I rename them to .html through .htaccess, but that's not what I want. I want to remove it straight. This is the first thing I don't know how to do. The second thing is actually very annoying. My .htaccess file with code above, adds .html/ to every string entered after example.com/directory/foo/. So if I enter example.com/directory/foo/bar (obviously /bar doesn't exist since foo is a file), instead of just displaying message that page is not found, it converts it to example.com/directory/foo/bar.html/, then searches for a file for a few seconds and then displays the not found message. This, of course, is bad behavior. So, once again, I need the code in .htaccess to do the following things: Remove .html extension Remove .php extension Remove .cgi extension Force the trailing slash at the end of URLs Requests should behave correctly (no adding trailing slashes or extensions to strings if file or directory doesn't exist on server) Code should be as simple as possible I would very much appreciate any help. • I'm using a compatible active DisplayPort to DVI adapter with EyeFinity, why does my monitor still flicker?

  I specifically chose an active DisplayPort <- DVI adapter for use with EyeFinity right out of my graphic card vendor's list of confirmed compatible adapters. Yet the screen fails horribly, it blinks on and off constantly, sometimes the graphics go screwy and the appropriate resolutions won't be available. Sometimes the resolution will be available but I'll discover it's only with interlaced refresh rates and bounces up and down. I have to switch the resolution back and forth, again and again, to get it to work correctly, and then it fails again and the process must be repeated the moment the monitor is turned off or I reboot. It's maddening. What is wrong? Is my GFX card supplying insufficient voltage? (Firmware tweaks allegedly help some people, but my card's isn't modifiable.) Could the adapter be defective? Is it not "active" enough for my card and I need an expensive powered adapter? Is this endemic to DisplayPort in general?

  I have a machine that has wifi and ethernet. I have wifi active, and am not using ethernet. My Windows firewall shows two active networks, one is the wifi network I connect to, and the other is "Unidentified network". What is this unidentified network? I can't seem to be able to get rid of it because I can't find where it is even defined. How can you detect this and know whether this is just something appropriate or possibly a security problem? • Permissions issue: how can Apache access files in my Home directory?

  I know file permissions have been covered on here before, but im struggling to get my head around the concept for my scenario. I created the files on an old ubuntu installation. Ive copied the files into my new ubuntu installation and put them in my webroot. When i attempt to run the files (theyre PHP files) i get an error relating to permissions in an attempt to fix this, i assumed that they must still be owned by the previous owner, so i ran chown -R on the directory, with my username as an argument, in order to take ownership of all of the files in the directory. It should be noted that the usernames between new and old ubuntu installations were the same. When i attempt to run the files again, same problem: 500 error due to permissions problems. Can anyone tell me what other steps i should take? The webroot for my apache installation is inside my home folder. If i create new files in my webroot, they also work as expected, its only the old files that are causing the problem.

  I am a novice in networking and I want to learn more about Windows Server 2008 and Active Directory. Basically I have serveral Windows 7 PC's in my home and an IBM server with Win Server 2008 installed. I have enabled Active Directory and set the server to have a static IP. Thats as far as I have got and I feel a little overwhelmed at the moment as I am not sure what to do next. What I eventually want to do is have the Windows 7 PC's to be able to be authenticated by the server - basically a mock up of what most large or medium sized businesses/organisations run. Sorry if I sound a bit sketchy, but I understand some things but not the whole picture, I guess I just need confirmation that I am sort of on the right track :) Also what are some good resources out there you can point me to, what are the absolute basics I need to to get started so I can further my learning?

• Is there an application that will move an active window to the system tray without minimizing it

  I have an active application (lets say an instant messaging client) whose buddy list I have up (active) on one side of my screen at all times in Windows 7. I would like to remove that icon from the taskbar either by moving it to the system tray (as happens when the app is minimized) or by just removing it altogether. To be clear: I do not want to minimize the window to the system tray (as described in Windows app to hide application from taskbar) I want to keep the window its NORMAL size and location and just get rid of the taskbar icon for the app. I'm looking for any tool, third party, native, registry hack, to accomplish this.

  We had a catastrophic failure where all that remains is a single edb file. No backups. No log files. The database that remains is on the "passive" copy. The "active" copy is missing, but the server is active. The Exchange console reports that the edb file needs to be reseeded, however there is no source to reseed from. How do I make the "invalid" database file (missing logs) valid? How do I make exchange recognize this as a valid database to use as a primary?

• Maximum number of files one ext3 directory while still getting acceptable performance?

  I have an application writing to an ext3 directory which over time has grown to roughly three million files. Needless to say, reading the file listing of this directory is unbearably slow. I don't blame ext3. The proper solution would have been to let the directory write to sub-directories such as ./a/b/c/abc.ext rather than just ./abc.ext. I'm changing to such a sub-directory structure and my question is simply: roughly how many files should I expect to store in one ext3 directory while still getting acceptable performance? Or in other words; assuming that I need to store three million files in the structure, how many levels deep should the ./a/b/c/abc.ext structure be? Obviously this is a question that cannot be answered exactly, but I'm looking for a ball park estimate.

  Is it possible to define a virtual directory in IIS and somehow make the files in that directory relative to the physical directory and not to the virtual directory ? For instance on my server I have the following folders: D:\WebSite\Css\myTheme.css, D:\WebSite\Images\image1.jpg I created a virtual directory on IIS resources.mysite: Inside my website I reference the sheet like this resources.mysite/myTheme.css But inside myTheme.css I reference pictures from ../Images/images1.jpg. So the problem is that image1.jpg is not found because it is relative to the physical folder and not the virtual folder on IIS. Can I solve this problem without modifying the style sheet ?

Currently I am using imagelists where I manually maintain the icons (like one for pdf, one for xls, ...) and when I need to display an icon for a filetype that I don't explicitly support I have a generic icon. Is there a way to retrieve the icon used by windows, like MyTImage := GiveMeDefaultIconForExtension('pdf'); In Vista and Seven this should be an icon with multiple resolutions I think. Moreover I would like to know if there is a way to get the preview used by windows explorer. For example windows explorer creates a small thumbnail for a pdf document for example, and displays it when the user chooses to view "big icons". Is there a way to retrieve that preview?   hi i am comletly new to iis and asp.net i am trying to setup bugNET on a godaddy server. i created a virtual directory and once i tried to launch the site i get this error: Parser Error Message: It is an error to use a section registered as allowDefinition='MachineToApplication' beyond application level. This error can be caused by a virtual directory not being configured as an application in IIS. here is complete detail of what i did. hosting: godaddy created virtual directory (child folder of root) - named: devbunk with these settings (anonymous access, directory browsing) that is all i can do to with iis on godaddy. the error tells me that i need to turn the virtual directory as an application. godaddy doesnt let me do that... how do i do it? btw, i have iis7 setup.

  I have a project in NetBeans which haven't used CVS until now. Let's say the directory with source files is called /www/source_files and directory with project files /www/project_files. Module in repository is called differently than source files directory. When I'm trying to check out CVS, it forces me to create a directory called exactly how module is called, which is fine by me in fact. Straight after it asks me if I wanted to create new project. And here the problem begins. I don't want to do that and I have no idea how to link newly created directory with CVS and checked out files with my project. I'd like to end up with following structure: /www /source_files /project_files /cvs_files Any ideas how to do this? I'm using NetBeans 6.8.

  By reading some tutorials online I used these commands: Make a local group: net localgroup CopsshUsers /ADD Deny access to this group at top level: cacls c:\ /c /e /t /d CopsshUsers Open access to the copSSH installation directory: cacls copssh-inst-dir /c /e /t /r CopsshUsers Add Copssh user to the group above: net localgroup CopsshUsers mysshuser /add simply put these commands will try to create a usergroup that has no permission on your computer and it only have access to the copSSH Installation directory. This is not true, since you cannot change the permission on your windows directory, the third command won't remove access to windows folder (it says access denied on his log). Somehow I achieved that by taking ownership of Windows folder and then i execute the third command so CopsshUsers has no permissions on windows folder from now on. Now i tried to SSH to the server and it simply can't login! this is kind of funny because with permission on windows directory you can login and without it you can't!! So if you CAN SSH to the server somehow you know that you have access to the windows directory! (Is this really true??) Simple task: Limiting ssh user account only to access his home directory on WINDOWS and nothing else! Guys please help!

  Hello! I have made a menu that adds class "active" on hover to each li, and removes the class when hovered out, except on li s that has a class "active" already. So far, this is done. However I have another .click() on every li that loads a content to somewhere with ajax. The problem starts here, when I click, I want to add class "active" to clicked element and remove class from all of them. I add the class, but the li that had class "active" before the click doesn't get "active" when hovered, I think the "active" class is not removed from it?   I have a problem that I can't seem to solve. We have a Ubuntu server setup with RAID-10 and two of the drives dropped out of the array.
