• Updating D3 column chart with different values and different data sizes

  Background I am attempting to create a reusable chart object with D3.js. I have setup a chart() function that will produce a column chart. On a click event on any of the columns, the chart will update with a new random data array that will contain a random number of data points (i.e. the original chart could have 8 columns, but upon update, could have 20 columns or 4 columns). Problem Say I have 8 data points (and thus 8 columns) in my original dataset. When I update the chart with random data, the columns appropriately adjust their height to the new values - but new bars aren't added. Additionally, while the width of the columns appropriately adjust to accommodate the width of the container and the new number of data points, if that number of data points is less than the original set, then some of those columns from the original dataset will linger until the number of data points is greater than or equal than the original. My end goal is to have new data dynamically added or old data outside of the range of the new data count dynamically removed. I've created a jsfiddle of the behavior. You may have to click the columns a couple of times to see the behavior I'm describing. Additionally, I've pasted my code below. (a) Is what I did in the Loan class to setClient correct given what I have in the Person class? (e.g.this.client = client) (b) Can I call super twice in a method? I have to set two attributes from the Loan class from the constructor in the CarLoan class and I thought that would be a way to do it. (c) Do you have to set attributes for enumeration types differently in a constructor or getter/setter methods? I get an error for (this.length = length) in my CarLoan class and I was unsure of how enumeration values should be set. Thanks!

• Rogue PropertyChanged notifications from ViewModel

  The following simple program is causing me a Databinding headache. I'm new to this which is why I suspect it has a simple answer. Basically, I have two text boxes bound to the same property myString. I have not set up the ViewModel (simply a class with one property, myString) to provide any notifications to the View for when myString is changed, so even although both text boxes operate a two way binding there should be no way that the text boxes update when myString is changed, am I right? Except... In most circumstances this is true - I use the 'change value' button at the bottom of the window to change the value of myString to whatever the user types into the adjacent text box, and the two text boxes at the top, even although they are bound to myString, do not change. Fine. However, if I edit the text in TextBox1, thus changing the value of myString (although only when the text box loses focus due to the default UpdateSourceTrigger property, see reference), TextBox2 should NOT update as it shouldn't receive any updates that myString has changed. However, as soon as TextBox1 loses focus (say click inside TextBox2) TextBox2 is updated with the new value of myString. My best guess so far is that because the TextBoxes are bound to the same property, something to do with TextBox1 updating myString gives TextBox2 a notification that it has changed. Very confusing as I haven't used INotifyPropertyChanged or anything like that. To clarify, I am not asking how to fix this. I know I could just change the binding mode to a oneway option. I am wondering if anyone can come up with an explanation for this strange behaviour? • Fastest way to pad a number in Java to a certain number of digits

  Am trying to create a well-optimised bit of code to create number of X-digits in length (where X is read from a runtime properties file), based on a DB-generated sequence number (Y), which is then used a folder-name when saving a file. I've come up with three ideas so far, the fastest of which is the last one, but I'd appreciate any advice people may have on this... 1) Instantiate a StringBuilder with initial capacity X. Append Y. While length < X, insert a zero at pos zero. 2) Instantiate a StringBuilder with initial capacity X. While length < X, append a zero. Create a DecimalFormat based on StringBuilder value, and then format the number when it's needed. 3) Create a new int of Math.pow( 10, X ) and add Y. Use String.valueOf() on the new number and then substring(1) it. The second one can obviously be split into outside-loop and inside-loop sections. So, any tips? Using a for-loop of 10,000 iterations, I'm getting similar timings from the first two, and the third method is approximately ten-times faster. Does this seem correct? • Trying to packetize TCP with non-blocking IO is hard! Am I doing something wrong?

  Oh how I wish TCP was packet-based like UDP is! But alas, that's not the case, so I'm trying to implement my own packet layer. Here's the chain of events so far (ignoring writing packets) Oh, and my Packets are very simply structured: two unsigned bytes for length, and then byte[length] data. (I can't imagine if they were any more complex, I'd be up to my ears in if statements!) Server is in an infinite loop, accepting connections and adding them to a list of Connections. PacketGatherer (another thread) uses a Selector to figure out which Connection.SocketChannels are ready for reading. It loops over the results and tells each Connection to read(). Each Connection has a partial IncomingPacket and a list of Packets which have been fully read and are waiting to be processed. On read(): Tell the partial IncomingPacket to read more data. (IncomingPacket.readData below) If it's done reading (IncomingPacket.complete()), make a Packet from it and stick the Packet into the list waiting to be processed and then replace it with a new IncomingPacket. There are a couple problems with this. First, only one packet is being read at a time. If the IncomingPacket needs only one more byte, then only one byte is read this pass. This can of course be fixed with a loop but it starts to get sorta complicated and I wonder if there is a better overall way. Second, the logic in IncomingPacket is a little bit crazy, to be able to read the two bytes for the length and then read the actual data. The problem is: if I run it for the first time everything work, but if I try to execute it another time I get and IndexOutOfBoundException, or a bad count of the occurrences, the odd thing is that if I get the error, and modify the code, after that it will works again just for once.   In my model (pins.rb), I have two sorting orders: default_scope order: 'pins.featured DESC' #for adding featured posts to the top of a list default_scope order: 'pins.created_at DESC' #for adding the remaining posts beneath the featured posts This sorting order (above) is how I want my 'pins view' (index.html.erb) to look. Which is just a list of ALL user posts. In my 'users view' (show.html.erb) I am using the same model (pins.rb) to list only current_user pins. HOWEVER, I want to sorting order to ignore the "featured" default scope and only use the second scope: default_scope order: 'pins.created_at DESC' How can I accomplish this? I tried doing something like this: default_scope order: 'pins.featured DESC', only: :index default_scope order: 'pins.created_at DESC' But that didn't fly... • linked list problem (with insert)

  The problem appears with the insert function that I wrote. 3 conditions must work, I tested b/w 1 and 2, b/w 2 and 3 and as last element, they worked. But b/w 3 and 4, it did not work.   I am using JavaScript to work out all the combinations of badminton doubles matches from a given list of players. Each player teams up with everyone else. EG. If I have the following players a, b, c & d. Their combinations can be: a & b V c & d a & c V b & d a & d V b & c I am using the code below, which I wrote to do the job, but it's a little inefficient. It loops through the PLAYERS array 4 times finding every single combination (including impossible ones). It then sorts the game out into alphabetical order and stores it in the GAMES array if it doesn't already exist. I can then use the first half of the GAMES array to list all game combinations. The trouble is if I have any more than 8 players it runs really slowly because the combination growth is exponential. Does anyone know a better way or algorithm I could use? • 501 Error during Libjingle PCP on Amazone EC2 running Openfire

  I am trying to implement Google's Libjingle (version: 0.6.14) PCP example and I am getting a 501: feature not implemented error during execution. Specifically, the error occurs after each "account" has connected, been authenticated and began communicating with the other. An abbreviated log of the interaction is provided at the end. I have set up my own jabber server (using OpenFire on an Amazon EC2 server), have opened all of the necessary ports and have added each "account" to the other's roster. • Python soap using soaplib (server) and suds (client)

  This question is related to: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/1751027/python-soap-server-client In the case of soap with python, there are recommendation to use soaplib (http://wiki.github.com/jkp/soaplib) as soap server and suds (https://fedorahosted.org/suds/) as soap client. My target is to create soap services in python that can be consumed by several clients (java, etc). I tried the HelloWorld example from soaplib (http://trac.optio.webfactional.com/wiki/HelloWorld). It works well when the client is also using soaplib. Then, I tried to use suds as client consuming the HelloWorld services and it fail. -Why this is happening? Does soaplib server has problems to consumed by different clients? • jQuery doesn't work in IE8?

  Hi, I am working on a site here: mfm.treethink.net All the jquery works fine in Firefox, Chrome and Safari but on IE8 it gives me errors and the banner at the top doesn't work (which uses the crossSlide jQuery plugin) and as well the image rollovers don't work with the colour change. IE8 is telling me that the errors are on lines 53, 134 and 149 in the source, all of those lines are where the jquery function is declared. $(document).ready(function(){ I am running jquery 1.4. Oddly enough, the other piece of jQuery I have on that page works, the artist browse/select menu on the right. But the banner and image rollovers don't.   I have my application designed with Repository pattern implemented and my code prepared for optional dependency injection in future, if we need to support another datastore. I want to create a custom validation attribute for my content objects. This attribute should perform some kind of datastore lookup. For instance, I need my content to have unique slugs. To check if a Slug already exist, I want to use custom DataAnnotation attribute in my Base content object (instead of manually checking if a slug exists each time in my controller's Insert actions). Attribute logic would do the validation. There's an error in line [UniqueSlug(ContentType1)] saying: "An attribute argument must be a constant expression, typeof expression or array creation expression of an attribute parameter type." Let me explain that I need to provide the ContentType1 parameter to the Constructor of UniqueSlug class because I use it in my data provider. It is actually the same error that appears if you try do to this on the built-in Required attribute: [Required(ErrorMessageResourceType = typeof (Localize), ErrorMessageResourceName = Resources.Localize.SlugRequired] It does not allow us to set it to dynamic content. In the first case ContentType1 gets known at runtime, in the second case the Resources.Localize.SlugRequired also gets known at runtime (because the Culture settings are assigned at runtime). This is really annoying and makes so many things and implementation scenarios impossible. So, my first question is, how to get rid of this error? The second question I have, is whether you think that I should redesign my validation code in any way?

• Binding a wpf listbox to a combobox

  Hi there, I have created a very basic wpf application that I want to use to record time entries against different projects. I havent used mvvm for this as I think its an overkill. I have a form that contains a combobox and a listbox. I have created a basic entity model like this What I am trying to do is bind the combobox to Project and whenever I select an item from the combobox it updates the listview with the available tasks associated with that project. This is my xaml so far. I dont have any code behind as I have simply clicked on that Data menu and then datasources and dragged and dropped the items over. The application loads ok and the combobox is been populated however nothing is displaying in the listbox. • firefox, jQuery ajax calls firing twice and never triggering success or error functions

  Hi, I am developing with the .NET framework, using jQuery 1.4.2 client side. When developing in Firefox version 3.6, every so often an one of the many ajax calls I make on the page will fire twice, the second will return successfully but will not trigger the success handler of the ajax call and the first never returns anything. So basically the data is all sent to the server and response is sent down but nothing happens with the response. Here is an example of the call I am making. It happens to any of the ajax calls, so there is not one particular that is causing the problem: $.ajax({ type:"POST", contentType : "application/json; charset=utf-8", data:"{}", dataType:"json", success:function(){ alert('success'); }, error:function(){ alert('error'); }, url:'/services.aspx/somemethod' }); }) From firebug, here are the headers of the first call which in firebug shows as never completely responding, meaning i see no response code and the loader gif in the firebug never goes away. I have seen this article about firefox 3.5+ and preflighted requests https://developer.mozilla.org/En/HTTP_access_control#Preflighted_requests In the article is says if a "POST" is made with any other content type than "application/x-www-form-urlencoded, multipart/form-data, or text/plain" than the request is pre-flighted. • .exe File becomes corrupted when downloaded from server

  Firstly: I'm a lowly web designer who knows just enough PHP to be dangerous and just enough about server administration to be, well, nothing. I probably won't understand you unless you're very clear! The setup: I've set up a website where the client uploads files to a specific directory, and those files are made available, through php, for download by users. The files are generally executable files over 50MB. The client does not want them zipped, as they feel their users aren't savvy enough to unzip them. I'm using the php below to force a download dialogue box and hide the directory where the files are located. It's Linux server, if that makes a difference. The problem: There is a certain file that becomes corrupt after the user tries to download it. It is an executable file, but when it's clicked on, a blank DOS window opens up. The original file, prior to download opens perfectly. There are several other similar files that go through the same exact download procedure, and all of those work just fine. Things I've tried: I've tried uploading the file zipped, then unzipping it on the server to make sure it wasn't becoming corrupt during upload, and no luck. I've also compared the binary code of the original file to the downloaded file that doesn't work, and their exactly the same (so the php isn't accidentally inserting anything extra into the file). Could it be an issue with the headers in my downloadFile function? • How Do I Prevent Rails From Treating Updated Nested Attributes Differently From New Nested Attribute

  I am using rails3 beta3 and couchdb via couchrest. I am not using active record. I want to add multiple "Sections" to a "Guide" and add and remove sections dynamically via a little javascript. I have looked at all the screencasts by Ryan Bates and they have helped immensely. The only difference is that I want to save all the sections as an array of sections instead of individual sections. Basically like this: "sections" => [{"title" => "Foo1", "content" => "Bar1"}, {"title" => "Foo2", "content" => "Bar2"}] So, basically I need the params hash to look like that when the form is submitted. When I create my form I am doing the following: <%= form_for @guide, :url => { :action => "create" } do |f| %> <%= render :partial => 'section', :collection => @guide.sections %> <%= f.submit "Save" %> <% end %> And my section partial looks like this: <%= fields_for "sections[]", section do |guide_section_form| %> <%= guide_section_form.text_field :section_title %> <%= guide_section_form.text_area :content, :rows => 3 %> <% end %> Ok, so when I create the guide with sections, it is working perfectly as I would like. The params hash is giving me a sections array just like I would want. The problem comes when I want edit guide/sections and save them again because rails is inserting the id of the guide in the id and name of each form field, which is screwing up the params hash on form submission. Do I have to create a custom form builder? Is there some other trick I can do to prevent rails from putting the id of the guide in there? I have tried a bunch of stuff and nothing is working. • Problem with displaying and downloading email attachments using the zend framework

  Hi guys I'm trying to display emails in my inbox and their respective attachments. At the same time I also wish to be able to download the attachments however I'm kinda stuck here. I did a var dump and noticed that in the for loop with the reverseiterator teh indexes $ii returned are 1 - 2 - 2 !! Whats going on here how can the indexes be repeated? How can I tell one part from the others?
