Silverlight and WCF caching

There are scenarios where Silverlight client calls WCF (or REST) service for data. Now, if the data is cached on the WCF layer, the calls can take considerable resources at the server if NOT cached. Keeping that in mind along with the fact that cache is an cross-cutting aspect, and therefore it should be as easy as possible to put Cache wherever required. The good thing about the solution is that it caches based on the inputs. The input can be basic type of any complex type. If input changes the data is fetched and then cached for further used. If same input is provided again, data id fetched from the cache. The cache logic itself is implemented as PostSharp aspect, and it is as easy as putting an attribute over service call to switch on cache. Checking timeouts made more readable

I have several situations where I need to control timeouts in a technical application. Either in a loop or as a simple check. Of course – handling this is really easy, but none of these is looking cute. My goal is something that can be read like “If girlWentIntoBathroom is more than 10 seconds ago” 1st attempt if (girlWentIntoBathroom > (10).Seconds().Ago()) MessageBox.Show("Wait a little longer"); else MessageBox.Show("Knock louder"); So I wrote an extension for integer that converts the integer into a TimeSpan public static TimeSpan Seconds(this int amount) { return new TimeSpan(0, 0, amount); } After that, I wrote an extension for TimeSpan like this: public static DateTime Ago(this TimeSpan diff) { return DateTime.Now.Add(-diff); } This works fine so far, but has a great disadvantage. PHP Fingerprinting CMS Versions by their meta tags [migrated]

Hey guys I'm having some issues with the speed of my script. I'm a novice I know so getting past that - what suggestions would you have to speed up my script? I was originally just reading in the index.php and then searching the <head> of the page for an array of strings. Then I read about the get_meta_tags and went that way. Is it dangerous for me to give some of my Model classes Control-like methods?

In my personal project I have tried to stick to MVC, but I've also been made aware that sticking to MVC too tightly can be a bad thing as it makes writing awkward and forces the flow of the program in odd ways (i.e. some simple functions can be performed by something that normally wouldn't, and avoid MVC related overheads). So I'm beginning to feel justified in this compromise: I have some 'manager programs' that 'own' data and have some way to manipulate it, as such I think they'd count as both part of the model, and part of the control, and to me this feels more natural than keepingthem separate. For instance: One of my Managers is the PlayerCharacterManager that has these methods: void buySkill(PlayerCharacter playerCharacter, Skill skill); void changeName(); void changeRole(); void restatCharacter(); void addCharacterToGame(); void createNewCharacter(); PlayerCharacter getPlayerCharacter(); List<PlayerCharacter> getPlayersCharacter(Player player); List<PlayerCharacter> getAllCharacters(); I hope the mothod names are transparent enough that they don't all need explaining. I've called it a manager because it will help manage all of the PlayerCharacter 'model' objects the code creates, and create and keep a map of these. I may also get it to store other information in the future. I plan to have another two similar classes for this sort of control, but I will orchestrate when and how this happens, and what to do with the returned data via a pure controller class. This splitting up control between informed managers and the controller, as opposed to operating just through a controller seems like it will simplify my code and make it flow more. My question is, is this a dangerous choice, in terms of making the code harder to follow/test/fix? Is this somethign established as good or bad or neutral? I oculdn't find anything similar except the idea of Actors but that's not quite why I'm trying to do. Edit: Perhaps an example is needed; I'm using the Controller to update the view and access the data, so when I click the 'Add new character to a player button' it'll call methods in the controller that then go and tell the PlayerCharacterManager class to create a new character instance, it'll call the PlayerManager class to add that new character to the player-character map, and then it'll add this information to the database, and tell the view to update any GUIs effected. That is the sort of 'control sequence' I'm hoping to create with these manager classes.

How bad does it look to have left a job soon after starting? [closed]

I have a job I would like to leave. On advice from friends and parents I have stayed. Their primary concern is that it would look bad on my resume if I left only after a few months of joining. My concerns with the job are as follows: When I started it was preferred I provide and use my own equipment. Could be out of business in a few months from lack of cash flow Poor code quality: memory leaks and lack of error handling. The same mistakes continue to be made even though I have raised the issue. It has become evident that co-workers do not understand memory management rules of the platform and are not interested in learning them. Yet, there is still surprise from them when strange bugs continue to crop up. As a result don't feel I will learn from co-workers. Plus, fixing the the lingering bugs and trying to keep up on new feature development is like a game of whack-o-mole that never ends. I don't believe in the companies vision or its ability to execute on the ideas anymore. My ideas and suggestions for very small tweaks are quickly dismissed. And so more than half or so have come back as bugs that we end up needing to address. I have been told to wait on fixing bugs in codes until we can talk to the original author. I don't feel I am allowed to take initiative to just fix/change things and do what I think is best. Everything needs consensus even for a bug fix before any work is done. I am adopting a shut-up and just do what I am told approach to save myself from ulcers. Lots of meetings (I am personally not involved in all of them which is good) but the sheer amount reminds me of days at a big corporation. Why is everyone around me always meeting? It's a small company. I can count everyone on my toes and fingers. I can say with certainty I have no interest in working with any of them again. This is the first time I have truly worked with a group of so called "B and C players". Ultimately, I think it is my fault for not doing a better job evaluating the team and company before joining. But I have generated a better set of questions when probing companies in the future. My questions are: How bad does it look to have left a job soon (few months) after starting? What would be the best way to explain my concerns and reasons for leaving without badmouthing the company? Should I stick it out to what I believe will be the soon end of the company?

Looking for an algorithm to connect dots - shortest route

I have written a program to solve a special puzzle, but now I'm kind of stuck at the following problem: I have about 3200 points/nodes/dots. Each of these points is connected to a few other points (usually 2-5, theoretical limit is 1-26). I have exactly one starting point and about 30 exit points (probably all of the exit points are connected to each other). Many of these 3200 points are probably not connected to neither start nor end point in any way, like a separate net, but all points are connected to at least one other point. I need to find the shortest number of hops to go from entry to exit. There is no distance between the points (unlike the road or train routing problem), just the number of hops counts. I need to find all solutions with the shortest number of hops, and not just one solution, but all. And potentially also solutions with one more hop etc. I expect to have a solution with about 30-50 hops to go from start to exit. I already tried: 1) randomly trying possibilities and just starting over when the count was bigger than a previous solution. I got first solution with 3500 hops, then it got down to about 97 after some minutes, but looking at the solutions I saw problems like unnecessary loops and stuff, so I tried to optimize a bit (like not going back where it came from etc.). More optimizations are possible, but this random thing doesn't find all best solutions or takes too long. 2) Recursively run through all ways from start (chess-problem-like) and breaking the try when it reached a previous point. This was looping at about a length of 120 nodes, so it tries chains that are (probably) by far too long. If we calculate 4 possibilities and 120 nodes, we're reaching 1.7E72 possibilities, which is not possible to calculate through. This is called Depth-first search (DFS) as I found out in the meantime. Maybe I should try Breadth-first search by adding some queue? The connections between the points are actually moves you can make in the game and the points are how the game looks like after you made the move. What would be the algorithm to use for this problem? I'm using C#.NET, but the language shouldn't matter.

Translating multiple objects in GUI based on average position?

Help with DB Structure, vOD site

I have a video on demand style site that hosts series of videos under different modules. However with the way I have designed the database it is proving to be very slow. I have asked this question before and someone suggested indexing, but i cannot seem to get my head around it. But I would like someone to help with the structure of the database here to see if it can be improved. The core table is Videos: ID bigint(20) (primary key, auto-increment) pID text airdate text title text subject mediumtext url mediumtext mID int(11) vID int(11) sID int(11) pID is a unique 5 digit string to each video that is a shorthand identifier. Airdate is the TS, (stored in text format, right there maybe I should change that to TIMESTAMP AUTO UPDATE), title is self explanatory, subject is self explanatory, url is the hard link on the site to the video, mID is joined to another table for the module title, vID is joined to another table for the language of the video, (english, russian, etc) and sID is the summary for the module, a paragraph stored in an external database. The slowest part of the website is the logging part of it. I store the data in another table called 'Hits': id mediumint(10) (primary key, auto-increment) progID text ts int(10) Again, here (this was all made a while ago) but my Timestamp (ts) is an INT instead of ON UPDATE CURRENT TIMESTAMP, which I guess it should be. However This table is now 47,492 rows long and the script that I wrote to process it is very very slow, so slow in fact that it times out. A row is added to this table each time a user clicks 'Play' on the website and then so the progID is the same as the pID, and it logs the php time() timestamp in ts. Basically I load the entire database of 'Hits' into an array and count the hits in each day using the TS column. I am guessing (i'm quite slow at all this, but I had no idea this would happen when I built the thing) that this is possibly the worst way to go about this. So my questions are as follows: Is there a better way of structuring the 'Videos' table, is so, what do you suggest? Is there a better way of structuring 'hits', if so, please help/tell me! Or is it the fact that my tables are fine and the PHP coding is crappy?

Basic Android game loop having issues

I've set up a very basic game loop that should draw a circle, run 100 times, then draw another. I also have a text field that should display how many times the loop has ran. However, the screen seems to not update. It displays a different value for the tick count (different each time the app is ran) and simply stays there. After exiting the app, I get an error saying "Unfortunately, MyApp has stopped." Questions about TinyMCE. Or suggestions on a compariable product.

Hi I am using jquery 1.3.2 and asp.net mvc 1.0. Originally I was using some other rich html editor but I ran into one major problem when a user pasted in text from open office or MS office it would bring along tons of styling junk. If a user like wrote one sentence what was like 25 characters and pasted that into my current html editor the count would 25,000 characters and I don't want to store all that junk( I can't afford to). So tinyMCE seems to not have this problem. However I got some questions. It seems if you want to use for commercial use(what my site is but currently is not making very much at this time) you need to get a commercial license. However it does not say if it is free or if it will cost money. I am assuming it means that you will have to pay but I would like to confirm this. So do you have to pay for a license to use tinyMCe if your using it for commercial use? (Yes/ No) ------------------ Answer the following questions if you said "no" to the first question ----------- So would I use the jQuery package then or is it better to use the other versions? What is this .net compressor zip for? Do I need it? I only want a few of the buttons(like bold,font size) can I remove the other buttons? It seems to display a word count. I have a server with a LSI MegaRAID 9261-8i controller. Recently I started getting alerts like this one: Controller ID: 1 Consistency Check inconsistency logging disabled, too many inconsistencies on VD: 0 Generated on:Sat May 12 04:06:40 2012 SYSTEM DETAILS--- IP Address: 192.168.1.29 OS Name: Windows 7 x64 OS Version: 6.01 Driver Name: megasas.sys Driver Version: 4.5.1.64 IMAGE DETAILS--- BIOS Version: 2.120.33-1197 Firmware Package Version: 12.12.0-0045 Firmware Version: 3.21.00_4.11.05.00_0x05000000 VD 0 is a RAID mirror containing the system disk. I have searched and read, but cannot find any trace of how to actually do anything about this. I tried running a scandisk but that did not find anything (as I expected, since scandisk reads the disks as exposed by the controller, right?). The MegaRAID Storage Manager does not as far as I can see have any options for checking or fixing physical disks. The program claims the VD is "healty", and both disks have Error count 0. Also a bit strange is the System details in the message... The IP address is associated with the RAS (dial in) interface, and the OS should be Windows Server 2011 SBS. Has anyone else experienced this before? What can be done?

SCCM Report to identify machines with 64-bit capable hardware

Currently looking at deployment options for Windows 7. One of the questions we're looking into is 32 bit vs 63 bit. I'm trying to run a SCCM report against our estate to identify which machines are 64-bit capable (whether or not they're currently running a 64-bit OS). There seem to be a few resources out on the net for this (here, here and here) but none of them seem to work right on machines running 32-bit Windows XP. 32-bit XP machines seem to always report that they're running on 32-bit hardware. Out of these the Windows 7 (32 and 64-bit) report that the hardware is 64-bit capable, and the Windows XP machines report that they're only 32-bit capable. Does anyone know if there's another value I can query to get the hardware's capabilities correctly on XP, or is there a hotfix that will get it reporting the correct info?

Zabbix Log Monitoring - Duplicate alerts

I am configured Zabbix to monitor my Jboss Server logs for Erros and exclude some know errors. This setup is working with one issue. Zabbix will send me alerts when there is a new "ERROR" entry in the log file. But sometimes I get multiple alerts for the same event. For example, I got 5 alerts with the same time stamp "2012-06-25 07:55:56,864 ERROR". The duplicate alerts count is not constant, sometimes I get 2 sometimes 5 or 11. I checked the Monitoring Latest data in the GUI, and found that there is no duplicate entries. I have given my configuration of the log monitoring below. I am using latest version of zabbix server(2.0) Item configuration: Description: Server Error Monitoring. Performance analytics via DBMS "plugins", or other solution

I'm working on a systems monitoring product that currently focuses on performance at the system level. We're expanding out to monitoring database systems. Right now we can fetch simple performance information from a selection of DBMS, like connection count, disk IO rates, lock wait times, etc. However, we'd really like a way to measure the execution time of every query going into a DBMS, without requiring the client to implement monitoring in their application code. Some potential solutions might be: Some sort of proxy that sits between client and server. SSL might be an issue here, plus it requires us to reverse engineer and implement the network protocol for each DBMS. Plugin for each DBMS system that automatically records performance information when a query comes in. Other problems include "anonymising" the SQL, i.e. taking something like SELECT * FROM products WHERE price > 20 AND name LIKE "%disk%" and producing SELECT * FROM products WHERE price > ? AND name LIKE "%?%", though this shouldn't be too difficult with some clever parsing and regex. We're mainly focusing on: MySQL MSSQL Oracle Redis mongodb memcached Are there any plugin-style mechanisms we can utilise for any of these? Or is there a simpler solution?

Intel 1.83 Mac Mini upgraded to 1.5 gig for Snow Leopard

Even though I've upgraded countless video cards, RAM, harddrives, motherboards in PCs... this will be my first mac mini RAM upgrade. I've watched the classic "putty knife" video. (Absurd method... but I guess it's what I'm stuck with.) I have a 1.83 Intel-based Mac Mini from 2007-2008, with 1 gig of RAM. (Two 512 sticks) Can I install 1 gig + 512 ? (Or do I have to throw away my existing sticks and buy two 1 gig sticks?) This old machine is rarely used... so I want to spend the absolute minimum on this RAM upgrade. We ONLY use it to run xCode... nothing more. But wanted to increase the RAM so we can install Snow Leopard. I have no idea how many pins the memory has. I printed out over FORTY pages of specs about this machine from "About this Mac"... but didn't find what I needed. Does this sound right: DDR2 SDRAM (but no mention of SO-DIMM) 667MHZ (but don't know if I can use faster also) Pin count: Unknown Computer model number: Unknown (But I "think" it's an MB138/A) PC2 RAM (unknown... not mentioned) 5300 (unknown... not mentioned) Mfg date: (unknown... not mentioned) Number of slots: (unknown... not mentioned) Laptop or desktop RAM: (unknown... not mentioned)

haproxy and tomcat intermittent hangs

I am trying to run haproxy in front of tomcat on a Solaris x86 box, but I am getting intermittent failures. At seemingly random intervals, the request just hangs until haproxy times out the connection. I thought maybe it was my app, but I've been able to reproduce it with the tomcat manager app, and hitting tomcat directly there is no problems at all. Hitting it repeatedly with curl will cause the error within 10-15 tries curl -ikL http://admin:admin@<my server>:81/manager/status haproxy is running on port 81, tomcat on port 7000. haproxy returns a 504 gateway timeout to the client, and puts this into the log file: Sep 7 21:39:53 localhost haproxy[16887]: xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx:65168 [07/Sep/2009:21:39:23.005] http_proxy http_proxy/tomcat7000 5/0/0/-1/30014 504 194 - - sHNN 0/0/0/0/0 0/0 "GET /manager/status HTTP/1.1" Tomcat shows nothing, no error in the logs and no indication that the request ever makes it to the tomcat server. Heartbeat won't successfully start up resources from a cold boot when a failed node is present

I currently have two ubuntu servers running Heartbeat and DRBD. The servers are directory connected with a 1000Mbps crossover cable on eth1 and have access to an IP camera LAN on eth0. Now, let's say that one node is down and the remaining functional node is booting after having been shut down. The node that is still functioning won't start up heartbeat and provide access to the drbd resource from a cold boot. I have to manually restart heartbeat by sudo service heartbeat restart to get everything up and running. How can I get it to start fine from a cold start, when only one server is present? SuperMicro BMC on OpenSuSE Linux --cannot access from LAN

Hi, I have an (old) SMC-001 IPMI device on an (old) X6DVL-EG2 motherboard. My problem is that I cannot access the BMC from LAN. I'm also getting some interesting output from ipmitool. First, the setup. I enable Console Redirection in the BIOS, turn BIOS Redirection after POSt to "disabled". I then modprobe'ed for ipmi_msghandler, ipmi_devintf and ipmi_si. I then found ipmi0 under /dev. So far so good. Since I want console redirection over serial, I modified /boot/grub/menu.lst: http://pastebin.com/YYJmhusQ I then modified "/etc/inittab" as follows: S1:12345:respawn:/sbin/agetty -L 19200 ttyS1 ansi Networking I set as following, using "ipmitool" ipaddr: 192.168.3.164 netmask: 255.255.255.0 defgw: 192.168.3.1 The above are correct for my environment. To test it I do: ipmitool -I open chassis power off which responds by powering off the machine. zfs setup question

Currently I have a linux storage box and server with 4x750gb harddrives in raid-5 with ext3. I have ordered 3x1.5tb disks to upgrade this. Here is my planned upgrade: Backup: Format the 1.5 tb disks Copy all data from the raid-5 disks to the 1.5tb disks Destroy the raid-5 array. New setup: Create a VirtualBox system and install Nexenta (OpenSolaris + ubuntu) on it. Create a zfs pool with zraid1 with the 4 750gb disks. Copy from 1.5tb disks to the virtualbox zfs pool Format the 1.5tb disks. Replace 3 off the 750gb disks with 1.5tb disks. Reuse the 750gb disks elsewhere. The reason I wish to use one 750gb disk is since I can't grow the disk count in a raidz array, and this gives me the option off replacing that disk later for an extra 750gb storage. Would the ZFS performance be good running through virtualbox? Or will the performance overhead be too large? Will I get 1.5tb+1.5tb+750gb storage on the zraid? Or just 750gbx3 until all disks are 1.5tb?

frequent "SNMP error" with Cacti

When adding new devices to my Cacti instance, I get frequent "SNMP error" messages in the device screen. But the error is not consistent, not even for the same device. Here's what I already have checked: Sometimes a device shows that "SNMP error" message even when it did not had that error an hour before, and vice versa. I tried this with several different Cacti releases, installed on different OS (Debian squeeze: 0.8.7g-1+squeeze1, Debian Sid: 0.8.7i-3, CentOS 6.0: 0.8.7i-2.el6) tried both from a local (192.168.1.xy) network and from a different data center so I don't think it is a network problem reinstalled the Cacti database, rerun the scripts to install my devices. Now different devices have that error when executing a snmpwalk or snmpgetnext command from the command line, it is always successful increasing the timeout to 20000 (20 seconds) and the retry count to 10 does not make a difference The cacti.log says: 04/14/2012 02:10:19 PM - CMDPHP: Poller[0] WARNING: SNMP GetNext Timeout for Host:'s0026.mydomain.de', and OID:'.1.3.6.1.2.1.1.3.0' 04/14/2012 02:10:20 PM - CMDPHP: Poller[0] WARNING: SNMP GetNext Timeout for Host:'s0026.mydomain.de', and OID:'.1.3' However, when executing snmpget or snmpget with that from the command line a proper response is returned immediately.

MacBook Pro battery capacity 65K mAh

I have a 15" MacBook Pro 3.1 (that is Late 2007 model AFAIR). I've bought it new a couple of years ago. Recently its on-battery power lifespan became very short (30 to 10 minutes). When my notebook turns itself off due to "low battery" and I press the small button on the battery itself, all LED lights are alight, indicating full charge. When I plug in the power adapter, my Mac displays that "battery is fully charged, finishing charging process" (I have a Russian OS X 10.5.7, so that is a rough translation), but the LEDs on battery itself display (seemingly accurate) status that there are one or two "LEDs still not charged". My battery have as few as 37 recharge cycles (yes, I've neglected calibration over the time I've used it). Battery info programs like iBatt2 report battery capacity of 65 337 mAh (with by-design capacity of 5600 mAh). I get it that something went wrong with battery electronics. I've tried resetting my Mac's PRAM and SMC, it did not changed anything. Now I'm trying to recalibrate the battery, but looks like it does not help as well. Will try to recalibrate it several times in a row. I'd buy a new battery if I knew if it is battery fault, not a notebook's. Any suggestions? Update: After recalibration, my battery status now displays battery capacity of 1500 mAh. But with every recalibration (or simply when I use notebook without power adapter plugged in) this number changes in the range from 200 mAh to 1700 mAh. LEDs on battery now are synchronous with what nodebook thinks on the charge level. Also I've noticed that cycle count changes rather slowly. It is now 39, it was 37 when I've started recalibration, and I went through the process at least ten times... So, the main question is: does it look like that replacing the battery would help me (or does it look like this is notebook's problem)? I guess I should try replacing the battery.
