• How to set the preferred network interface in linux

  I have my network set up like this. http://docs.google.com/Doc?docid=0AZ1YxuLE4djaZGhqN2s1NmRfMjhjNjc0Ym1meg&hl=en In words: I have a machine (Calcium, running Arch Linux) that has two network interfaces. eth0 is hoooked up to a router, and is gigabit. Eth1 is hooked up directly to the university network over 10Megabit. The router's uplink is hooked up to the university network as well, and it is also 10Megabit. Currently (I believe) all traffic on Calcium is going through eth0, through the router, regardless of whether it is internal or external. (How can I confirm this?) Ideally, traffic that is destined for the internal network (192.168.10.0/24) would travel over eth0 to the router, and wherever it is going. ALL other traffic should go over eth1.

  I have created a simple batch file script for running Robocopy. It is set to make a backup of my user account folder to my external hard drive. The size of my user account directory is 18.3 GB but the backup of it occupies over 30 GB. After reading the contents of the log generated, it is obvious that it's copying files more than once. Why is this happening? I'm running Windows Seven Home Premium 64-bit.

• computer and User Account Migrated using ADMT but not sending mail

  I have successfully migrated a User and Computer account using ADMT. The user is able to login to the computer with the new account and is able to open outlook receive mail but is not able to send internal or external mail. The Exchange server is still in the Old domain. The bounce back message received was that the user doesn't have permissions to send to the recipient. When I migrated the user I did migrate the SID history so why is mail not being about to be sent? The body of the bounce back message is as follows: Your message did not reach some or all of the intended recipients. Subject: test Sent: 1/6/2010 4:17 PM The following recipient(s) could not be reached: User, user on 1/6/2010 4:17 PM You do not have permission to send to this recipient. • Installing Windows 7 on a BSOD Windows Vista (ASAP)

  On a previous question i posted, i asked for help on fixing my windows vista box because it keeps going to blue screen. No one seems to have the answer, so now i want to install Windows 7. I want to know if i can install 7 without having to reformat my hard drive and having to lose all my files. I've already confirmed the hardware is working because i installed Ubuntu 9.10 on my external hard drive and it runs on my system fine. • Site to Site VPN with ISA 2006 to a Dyndns Hostname?

  Hi all, i would like to create a site-to-site VPN between my ISA 2006 and a DLink router on the other side. My ISA got a fixed external IP Address, but the Dlink only has a dynamic one. So it makes use of DynDNS. Every "cheap router" supports making VPNs to a hostname. But in ISA 2006 I have to enter a IP Address in the VPN settings.   I am using a QNAP as an FTP server. Users access this NAS from their Mac OSX Lion clients and put files and folders inside the QNAP shares, which are later being accessed via FTP from external points. The problem is that inside the folders uploaded to the QNAP folders Mac OS leaves its .DS_Store and .* hidden files. I know that for a Samba share, for example, I need to add two lines to the /etc/samba/smb.conf file: veto files = /._*/.DS_Store/ delete veto files = yes But what can I do on a QNAP FTP service? • Unable to connect to mysql through JDBC connector through Tomcat or externally.

  I've installed a stock mysql 5.5 installation, and while I can connect to the mysql service via the mysql command, and the service seems to be running, I cannot connect to it through spring+tomcat or from an external jdbc connector. I'm using the following URL: jdbc:mysql://myserver.com:myport/mydb with proper username/password, but I receive the following message: server.com: Communications link failure The last packet sent successfully to the server was 0 milliseconds ago. the driver has not received any packets from the server. and tomcat throws: com.mysql.jdbc.exceptions.jdbc4.CommunicationsException: Communications link failure The last packet sent successfully to the server was 0 milliseconds ago. • Multiple WAN interfaces in same subnet on Sonicwall NSA220?

I see a bunch of related questions, so I'm hesitant to ask, but: I have a situation where I have a Sonicwall NSA220 serving as firewall/router for two internal subnets to two external WAN connections. In some locations this is two separate ISPs. In others, it's the same ISP but with multiple circuits. The problem is that one ISP has been unable to provide unique subnets for each WAN interface. Is there any possibility that I might be able to bond the two WAN interfaces into a single virtual interface, and then use source-routing to get internal subnets communicating out the appropriate physical interface? Or even just use traffic-shaping to give each internal network appropriate shared bandwidth? I haven't found anything in the docs, but it seemed like it might be worth asking. • Short USB cables not charging?

  I find this a strange problem but I can't find anything online about it. Recently I purchased a few short USB cables (20-30cm), to use in my car's USB connector to charge my phone. Strangely an older longer USB cable (1.2m), charges the phone fine (and the icon changes to show charging). With any of the short cables in the same USB slot no charging happens. Both the long and the short cables are USB2 compatible. I naturally assumed the short cables were faulty but connecting them to a PC or connecting to a high capacity external battery charging is successful using all the short cables and longer cables. Hopefully someone here is able to give me an explanation of the problem and how I can overcome this and use a short cable where it is most appropriate. Thanks

• Problem with Jumbo Frames

  Hello, I am trying to set up jumbo frames on my gigabit home LAN but no luck so far. My setup is: * D-Link DIR-655 router, HW Revision A3, Firmware 1.21 EU * Synology DS107+, Firmware 3.0-1337 * Laptop w/ Win7 x64, external PCIx NIC managed by "Generic Marvel Yukon 88E8053 based Ethernet Controller" The router is supposed to support jumbo frames but doesn't feature any relevant setting. I set the Jumbo Packet value to 9000 on both the NIC and the Synobox but it doesn't work, ping -f -l 8972 says "Packet needs to be fragmented but DF set". Is there any other setting I overlooked, the DIR-655 doesn't actually support jumbo frames, or what else could be the problem?

• PSQL 64bit driver error

  I have an Ubuntu 12.04 64bit server setup under Hyper-V. I have installed Pervasive 64bit SQL drivers so that a stock-updater script can run daily (Updates external MySQL database from another local server running Exchequer software / PSQL database). • Big IP F5 outbound HTTP issues

  We've tried upgrading from 9.x to 10.2 on our F5 Big IP 3400 and everything went over fine apart from one thing. We're unable to establish any outbound HTTP (80) connections from any servers that are assigned to a virtual server. This is something that worked before and is required for certain calls our servers need to make. Interestingly HTTPS (443) connections work fine, it's literally just anything outbound over port 80 seems to fail. Does anyone know if anything has changed between 9.4 and 10.2 that would mean additional config would need to be made to allow for external HTTP connections? Any advice would be appreciated, thank you

• P2V using Acronis True Image Home 10 and Windows 7

  I have a full system image using Acronis True Image Home 10 and want to run it as a virtual machine on Windows 7 Professional. I have created a virtual machine but Windows Virtual PC doesn't allow access to a USB external hard disk when booting from the Acronis Recovery CD. I've copied the backup onto the host machine and I can access it via the network using the Acronis boot CD but I'm wondering if there is an easier way? Does any other free Virtual Machine software support USB devices during boot (i.e. I can restore a backup image from the USB hard disk directly)

• Internet connection issue

  For some reason this laptop doesn't want to stay connected to the Internet... I have to restart the DHCP client service every time to fix the connection problem. Could someone tell me whats going on because I didn't have to usually do this? And I'm not sure if these problems are connected but the sound also disconnects itself and I have to enable it back, but everything that was using audio has to be restarted in order to hear it, even the browser? There are no external speakers and I didn't install any new software. My laptop is an XPS M1530, running Windows Vista.

  I have an external server and I installed a new Service on it. The service is running and I can access it locally. When I tried to get access to it locally, all worked just fine. but when I try to reach it from my laptop over the internet, I get the message, that the port is blocked. I added a rule to the windows firewall that all connections to that port are allowed but it still doesnt work. there is so many things in google that didnt help me, thats why I am asking specifically. I do acutally not know how to google for that right because i am not that into server configs and so on. Can anybody help me, what I have to do, to be able to access that port? From outside.

  I have a set of local RTMP stream servers in my network, but I want them to be reachable outside. The bandwidth is too narrow to serve multiple clients on the streamservers of my network, so the idea is to pull the local RTMP streams on a computer serving as a gateway, which pushes them on his turn to a hosted streaming provider. It is not possible to let the sources of the stream push their stream directly to the server outside due to network policy restrictions. Is there any work around? I followed the instructions in MS support here and tried: %windir%\system32\sysprep\sysprep.exe /generalize /oobe /shutdown /unattend:.\unattend.xml It did not work. Under certain circumstances, I need to tear down the VM Image from azure and re-deploy with some more changes. So sysprep has to run almost twice every week.

• Rework filename from mod_pagespeed back to normal files

  I am hoping someone can help me with this problem. I am moving to a new server and not using mod_pagespeed any more. However We not that we have lots of external links that link to images on our server using the strange mod_pagespeed filenames. This is not an issue but we do not want to have lots of 404 errors. • Puppet nodes cant' find master, ec2 public versus internal ip addresses and hosts files

  If I setup my hosts files such that they reference all other ec2 nodes using the internal ip addresses, will this work or do I have to use the external ip addresses? Do I need to specify anything in my security group to get internal ip addresses to work? e.g. /etc/hosts ip-10-11-12-13.internal some_node_name If I do this, can I reference some_node_name anywhere in my scripts where I would have used the ip address previously? On my puppet agent servers, I have a reference to my puppet master like: public-ip-here puppet When I reboot my puppet agent's, syslog shows they couldn't find the master with the message: getaddinfo : name or service not known I did get it to work by updating /etc/default/puppet and I added to the options: --server=public-ip-here From what I read, puppet will by default try using 'puppet', and I set this in my hosts file so why wouldn't it be picking this up?

• configure cisco catalyst 3560g with an egress uplink

  Currently my setup has our egress uplink connected directly to an external interface on a linux router/firewall/nat gateway. Since the linux box is a single point of failure, I've since setup two openbsd boxes using carp+pf+pfsync in order to gain some additional redundancy. the problem is, I only have one egress uplink (it's still a single point of failure) but need to get it to speak to the active carp node in my openbsd cluster which will server as my new router/firewall/nat cluster. Is there anything specific I need to do on a 3560G in order for me to be able to: 1) Drop the egress uplink into a port 2) Drop one link from the switch to a firewall 2) Drop a second link from a switch to the firewall This is so if one box dies, the other still has the egress link to the switch. Is putting them into one VLAN enough? Anything else that needs to go into the configuration for this setup to work?

• Why do msi installations use slower drives over faster ones in windows 7?

  I have noticed that the slowest drive in my system is used most during an msi installation. I mainly notice this when running windows updates but it seems to be msi installs in general. The setup I last saw this occur on was running Windows 7 with the following drives: Sata: 240GB SSD NTFS ~515MB/s Operating system drive 1TB NTFS ~110MB/s Firewire: 4TB ExFAT ~80MB/s I would think that windows would choose the fastest drive with available space for temporary files. But it will instead choose the external drive with the slowest transfer speed. I could also understand choosing the 1TB for not being an ssd in an attempt to preserve the longevity of the ssd write capacity. Why does this happen? Is there a way to force these installations to use the OS drive or a specific drive?

• Apache, modifying response codes from 404 to 301

  Hi, I'm running a magento installation on an apache server. There are many pages indexed in both google and linked to from external sites. I can't use 301 redirects in a .htaccess file as I can't be sure I will catch all the links. At the moment all requests are rewritten through magento and if a request isn't found magento returns a 404 File not Found. Is there a way of using one of the apache modules to filter the response* from magento and if a 404 Not Found is being sent back then replace the response with a standard 301 Redirect to the home page? E.g. Request to Magento -- Apache -- Rewrite to Magento index.php page -- page processed. Response if request exists -- return results (200) if request doesn't exist -- return 404 -- apache filter change response -- return 301 redirect to / I appreciate any help. Thanks, Jon as far as I am aware mod_rewrite is only used to rewrite requests and doesn't allow the modification of responses.

• Virus sending phishing emails through exchange server

  It appears that there is a virus on my network somewhere that is sending phishing emails through my exchange server. I can see the messages in message tracking and I see many SMTP errors for NDR's and rejected connections from external servers, but I do not see any SMTP authentications and I have logging up to MAX. How can I find the IP or hostname of the PC that is infected? Or is there some other explanation than virus? Anti-virus scan on server is clean. Server is not an open relay. Thanks

• FortiGate firewall configuration with /30 and /28 networks

  I have fiber coming in from a new ISP which is being handed off via Ethernet on a single physical port. I'm having doubts about how to approach the configuration on my FortiGate 200A firewall because I've been given a /30 containing the ISP's gateway and another /28 for external IPs I can use: x.y.76.12/30 (.13 is the GW) x.y.76.64/28 (public IP space) How do I configure the FG200A's WAN1 interface to be aware of the two networks? As I only have one physical ISP port, will I need to plug it into a switch to break-out two cables and use a DMZ port on the FG200A for setting up the /28? Thanks in advance for your insight!
