• Visual Studio, .NET Framework, and language versions

  Every so often a question comes up about how Visual Studio, the .NET Framework, and a .NET programming language relate to each other. Mostly, these questions have to do with versions. The reality is that these are actually three different “products” that are versioned independently of each other but are related.   There’s been a lot of recent talk in the industry about “big data”.  Much can be said about the importance of big data and the results from it, but you need to always consider the customer experience when analyzing and applying customer data. Personalization and merchandising drive the user experience.  Big data should enable you to gain valuable insight into each of your customers and apply that insight at the moment they are on your Web site, talking to one of your call center agents, or any other touchpoint.  While past customer experience is important, you need to combine that with what your customer is doing on your Web site now as well what they are doing and saying on social networking sites.  It’s key to have a 360 degree view of your customer across all of your touchpoints in order to provide that relevant and consistent experience that they come to expect when interacting with your brand. Big data can enable you to effectively market, merchandize, and recommend the right products to the right customers and the right time.  By taking customer data and applying it to product recommendations, you have an opportunity to gain a greater share of wallet through the cross-selling and up-selling of additional products and services.  You can also build sustaining loyalty programs to continue to engage with your customers throughout their long-term relationship with your brand.

• Help find correct alsa model for onboard sound (alc887?) that will work with jack and have correct mixer setup

  I have a Gigabyte GA-MA74GMT-S2 motherboard. I am using Jack for sound - connected to ALSA. I am running Ubuntu 12.04. aplay -l reports card 0: SB [HDA ATI SB], device 0: ALC887 Analog [ALC887 Analog] The problem is that the default setup, that alsa decides to use, causes stuttering and xruns no matter how generous I set the frames/period or periods/buffer etc. Also, Jack works fine if I plug in an external USB sound system and use that. My processor is an AMD phenom x4 945, and I have 8GB ram, and Video card is Geforce GTX550 Ti, all of which should be quite capable enough. I also tried Pulseaudio and that works fine, but I need to use Jack At first I thought it might be an interrupt conflict, but I have found that adding "options snd-hda-intel model=generic" to /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf causes it to play correctly, but the limited mixer setup lacks controls I need - so this setup isn't good enough. Still, it seems to prove it isn't a hardware conflict. I have tried many other models, such as 3stack, 6stack, auto and even basic, and they all suffer from the stuttering. I eventually found "options snd-hda-intel model=3stack-6ch-intel" works without stuttering, and mixer is much closer to what it needs to be. Can anyone help on how to get a correct and accurate model for ALSA to use? • Oracle Sun Solaris 11.1 Completes EAL4+ Common Criteria Evaluation

  Oracle is pleased to announce that the Oracle Solaris 11.1 operating system has achieved a Common Criteria certification at Evaluation Assurance Level (EAL) 4 augmented by Flaw Remediation under the Canadian Communications Security Establishment’s (CSEC) Canadian Common Criteria  Scheme (CCCS).  EAL4 is the highest level achievable for commercial software, and is the highest level mutually recognized by 26 countries under the current Common Criteria Recognition Arrangement (CCRA).  Oracle Solaris 11.1 is conformant to the BSI Operating System Protection Profile v2.0 with the following four extended packages. (1) Advanced Management, (2) Extended Identification and Authentication, (3) Labeled Security, and (4) Virtualization. Common Criteria is an international framework (ISO/IEC 15408) which defines a common approach for evaluating security features and capabilities of Information Technology security products. • Is it reasonable to expect knowing the whole stack bottom up?

  I am an Sr. developer/architect/Product Manager for embedded systems. The systems that I have had experience with have typically been small to medium size codebases - typically close to 25-30K LOC in C, using 8-16 and 32 bit low end microcontrollers. The systems have been entirely bootstrapped by our team - meaning right from the start-up code to the end application code has either been written by the team, or at the very least, is thoroughly understood and maintained by us. Now, if we were to start developing more complex systems with complex peripherals, such as USB OTG et al. (think, low end cell phones), there are libraries and stacks available commercially and from chip vendors that reduce the task to just calling the right APIs and being able to use those peripherals. Now, from a habit point of view, this does not give me and the team a comfortable feeling, not being able to comprehend the entire code tree, with virtual black boxes at the lower layers. Is it reasonable to devote, and reserve, time getting into the details of how the APIs are implemented, assuming that the same would also entail getting into details of relevant standards (again, for USB as an example)? Or, alternatively, should a thorough understanding of the top level usage of the APIs be sufficient? This of course assumes that the source codes to all libraries are available, which they are, in almost all cases. Edit: In partial response to @Abhi Beckert, the documentation is refreshingly very comprehensive and meticulously maintained, AFAIK and been able to judge. I have not had a long experience with the same.

  When Apple releases any product, they just work irrespective of age, capability and ability of the users. It’s in the DNA of Steve Jobs and his colleagues at Apple to build products that just work with out any learning curve. The recent iPhone is loaded with Siri, an intelligent personal assistant. But can a 77 year old person quickly learn to use Siri for his day to day activities? Lets hear from a son who trained his 77 year old dad to use Siri on iPhone He caught on much faster than I thought he might. I was feeling proud of him and believed Siri would be a real productivity help in his life — seeing that, at 77, my dad still works full time as a realtor. I was encouraged that he really liked and would use his new personal assistant. Or at least I was until my mom called later that night. "Your father and I were just practicing with his new phone," Sigh. Well Siri will be great for my dad…if and when he remembers how to find her.   With the FIFA World Cup 2010 in South Africa almost a week underway, the soccer fans all around the World are talking about at least 2 things. When you're in a situation where you're introducing a new product, in IT terms, introducing a new application, you would like to test all possible scenarios that your end users could be using and experiencing. However, that's a very time and resource intensive process to do for every application change or update.  It's like getting ready for the big game but you have no game plan.That's why a new approach has been developed. One that's based on the 80/20 rule. Testing 80% of the application will cost about 20% of the efforts. The remaining 20% of your application will not be tested before deployment, but monitored with a real user monitoring solution immediately after deployment. These tools track all user experiences, including error messages and the performance and availability metrics from an end user perspective. • Creating a new project for Team Foundation Server Basic.

  We have installed and configured TFS, we have connected to it using Visual Studio.  Now it is time to get a project created. From Team Explorer, we will right click on the servername\Collection item in the tree to select New Team Project. Once selected, this will open the New Team Project dialog.  Provide a name, then click Next.   The next step is to select a Project Template.  By default you will have 2 available (but there are many downloadable options).  It is important to understand what the templates bring and what options we will live with in the Lifecycle Management option we select. Once selected, click Next. Now we are at the point to specify where our code will be collected, Source Code settings part of the wizard.  Since we are starting new, we will select an empty folder. Click Next. Next we get a Summary view of the options selected. Click Finish. Once the template is downloaded, applied and our choices processed, we have completed the project creation.   This should be our final product …

• How to learn & introduce scrum in small startup?

  In a few months, a friend will establish his startup software company, and I will be the software architect with one additional developer. Though we have no real day-to-day experience with agile methods, I have read much "overview" type of material on them, and I firmly believe they are a good - if not the only - way to build software. So with this company, I want to go for iterative, agile development from day 1, preferably something light-weight. I was thinking of Scrum, but the question is: what is the best way for me and my colleagues to learn about it, to introduce it (which techniques when etc) and to evaluate whether we should keep it? Background which might be relevant: we're all experienced developers around the same age with similar professional mindset. We have worked together in the past and afterwards at several different companies, mostly with a Java/.NET focus. Some are a bit familiar with general ideas from the agile movement. In this startup, I have great power over tools, methods and process. The startup's product will be developed from scratch and could be classified as middleware. We have some "customer" contacts in the industry who could provide input as soon as we get to an alpha stage.

Well, it’s a cool looking family of tablets designed for Windows 8. And I have to say: they look stunning and I can’t wait to have one. There’s just one thing.. The name..Where have I heard that before? Why, indeed! Yes, it is also the name of a new paradigm in computing: Surface Computing. You may have read something about that, here on this blog for instance. Well, in order to prevent confusion they have decided to rename Surface to Pixelsense.
