Fast lighting with multiple lights

How can I implement fast lighting with multiple lights? I don't want to restrain the player, he can place an unlimited number and possibly overlapping (point) lights into the level. The problem is that shaders which contain dynamic loops which would be necessary to calculate the lighting tend to be very slow. I had the idea that if it could be possible at compiletime to compile a shader n times where n is the number of lights. If the number n is known at compiletime, the loops can be unrolled automatically. Is this possible to generate n versions of the same shader with just a different number of lights? At runtime I could then decide which shader to use for which part of the level.

Do I have to learn html and javascript to create web applications?

I am an experienced Java programmer, and I want to create a complex web application requiring dynamic pages, drawings, etc (take SO as an example). Do I have to learn javascript/html in order to create such an application? It is not that I don't want to learn another language (I've done this before), but technology on the javascript environment seems to change so fast that when you finish learning one framework it is already obsolete. I have checked a number of java framework for web development (spring, play), but not deeply. So can these frameworks (or other possible java frameworks that I'm not aware of) be used without learning html/javascript? I also have some python experience. So if I can do the app in python it is also an option.

3D RTS pathfinding

I understand the A* algorithm, but I have some trouble doing it in 3D to suit the needs of my RTS Basically, in the game I'm making, there will be agents with different sizes of OBB collision boxes. I can use steering behaviours for avoiding other agents, so I don't need complete dynamic pathfinding. However, there is a problem because different agents have different collision geometry, and structures can be placed in almost any place. This means that there might be a gap between two structures where some agents can go through and some can't. A solution I have found to this problem is to do a sweep of the collision geometry of the agent from start node of the edge the pf algorithm is currently testing, to the end node of that edge. But this is probably a bit overkill since every edge the algorithm tests would also have to create and test with a collision geometry sweep. What are some reasonable approaches to this problem? I should mention that I'd prefer not to use navmeshes, I prefer waypoints because my entire system is based on it atm.

what is the purpose of arrows?

I am learning functionnal programming with Haskell, and I try to grab concepts by first understanding why do I need them. I would like to know the goal of arrows in functional programming languages. What problem do they solve? I checked http://en.wikibooks.org/wiki/Haskell/Understanding_arrows and http://www.cse.chalmers.se/~rjmh/afp-arrows.pdf. All I understand is that they are used to describe graphs for computations, and that they allow easier point free style coding. The article assume that point free style is generally easier to understand and to write. This seems quite subjective to me. In another article (http://en.wikibooks.org/wiki/Haskell/StephensArrowTutorial#Hangman:_Main_program), a hangman game is implemented, but I cannot see how arrows makes this implementation natural. I could find a lot of papers describing the concept, but nothing about the motivation. What I am missing?

Hello, I want to use domains like xxx.abc.domain.tld. The xxx is my folder to access. I tried it with the rewrite rules, but I can't get it working, because I don't know how to get the part xxx from the SERVER_NAME into my RewriteRule. Print to file in Black and White [not printer specific]

Hi all, I have these pdf files of c++code and they are colored which would be cool, except that the network printer here is b&w and the printed out codes come in various shades of pale grey which makes them essentially unreadable (specially the comments). I would like everything (text, codes, commands,...) to be printed in the same (black) color. i've tried fuddling with the printer's properties, but the closest thing i see is the 'level of grey' tab, and there i have the choice between 'enhanced' and 'normal' (and it doesn't make a difference in my case). i've tried 'print to file', but i don't see any options there to print to b&w, I've tried installing the 'generic cups printer', but again no options to print to b&w. any idea ? (i'm on 10.10)

ubuntu-overlay-scrollbars set to false shows no arrows in several cases

I'm running 12.04, and prefer the more conservative style "normal" scrollbars over the overlay scrollbars. I have set them to false in the terminal: gsettings set org.gnome.desktop.interface ubuntu-overlay-scrollbars false However after doing so, with some apps (e.g. Nautilus, Document Viewer) my scrollbars only view a vertical bar, but no arrows on the top and bottom to scroll up and down. With some programs these are shown though, for instance Gummi and Texmaker. It would make a big difference (for instance when having to scroll pdf documents containing several hundreds of pages) to have those arrows reinstated. Is there any way to make this work?

networkprinting with cups in ubuntu 13.10

I upgraded from Ubuntu 13.04 to Ubuntu 13.10. The printer configurations were transferred correctly. I have an USB laser printer, which still works if I connect my laptop directly. Usually I used this printer by wlan or bluetooth, where an old laptop works as server (cups 1.3.X). If I now want to print some pdf or postscript file, one or the other way I only obtain a header printed, not the content of the file. Curiously the Ubuntu 13.10 test page is printed correctly.

And following the Texture to Polygonmsample i used this line to create the shape, where farseerObject is a list of vertices of the triangles: _compound = BodyFactory.CreateCompoundPolygon(World, farseerObject, 1f, BodyType.Dynamic); But I have to update the body each frame (like 30 fps) and this is very slow. I get just 2 or 3 fps. There's another (faster) way to create the Body from a list of triangles or the contour vertices?

it started with a broken package

all started when i tried to updated to the latest lts, but the problen is that the update interumpted and some broken packages apeared, i used synaptics to repair, but it wont repair, iv tried some console from some forum topic ... and in the end when i try to open synaptic or update managre this is what apears any ideas : E: Dynamic MMap ran out of room. Announcement: How-To Series Explaining Customizations Step By Step

Today we are announcing another initiative that we have been working on for a while: to help you learn common customization tasks, we are going to publish a series of detailed How-To documents with lots of screenshots. Many of these will also be the script for a YouTube video, giving you the choice to see it in action or go through the steps yourself guided by a PDF document. The focus of the initial set of How-Tos will be JDeveloper/ADF customizations, but over time we will expand into other areas. Easy Server-Side Language

Most of programming languages (Server-side languages for web development) needs a learning curve and requires some time to learn. However, I'm sure there is a difference between them. So, for example you can master the 'X' language in less time than the 'Y' language. I'm a beginner in web development, meaning that I just know HTML and CSS and now want to choose the right tool for building dynamic sites. What I'm looking for is a language that is easy to master in less time than other languages. So, is there a language that can suit my needs? If so, please let me know about what should I learn in it? (for example, which frameworks?, libraries?, IDEs?, databases?, etc). In the end, I don't want to regret my choice of the language and want to learn solid basics in it and in programming in general.

C++ compiler structures such as Virtual method Table etc

I am aware of the C++ Virtual Table which allows dynamic dispatch for doing things at runtime (although if I am honest I am not completely sure of the full list of things it achieves). I am wondering what other "low level" aspects of C++ are there, which one doesnt usually come across when learning the C++ language? Things like: -How is multithreading and locking on objects performed? -Overloading/overwriting functions -Generics Are there other "structures", similar to the vtable, which assist with these types of things on a lower level? (and if anyone can help with what the VTable actually does it would be most appreciated!)

Disqus 2012 comments NOT being indexed by Google

We run a high-traffic website at http://www.onedirection.net and we've been using Disqus throughout this year, initially to great effect. We accepted the upgrade to Disqus 2012 back in June, loving the increased user experience and the better community feel - albeit back to an Iframe again. However the fact we were specifically told that the comments are now being indexed by Google was great, and the dynamic nature of the iFrame suited our site (all our pages are cached, so by using Disqus the comments are updated straight away). However, it seems that the Disqus 2012 comments are not being indexed, and we've noticed an obvious fall in traffic over the last few months. Initially we didn't put this down to Disqus and focused on other issues (Google algorithm updates etc). But we're quickly coming down the reasoning that our pages now contain less indexable text, and we are getting less traffic because of this. We've tried emailing Disqus directly but they're very slow and don't seem keen to help. Any thoughts on this?

Possible Duplicate: What things required to host a website at home I want to create a temporary staging server which can be accessed (i.e. via browser) by other people that I want to show the website to (a business partner who is half way accross the world). IIRC, my ISP issues dynamic addresses so I may need to register with a (DNS server?) - not sure about this. Although I'm a software developer, I don't know much about the hardware side of things - and would appreciate help in getting me setup so I can show a website to a business partner. Mobile traffic of my second site redirected to my base site [Edited,have a look]

I have a strange issue with my website and it seems i am unable to understand what cauese the problem.I would highly appreciate your help.The Scenario is I have two websites. Website A Website B Website A is simply hosted within the root directory of my hosting account.Within this root *directory* i have a sub folder " subfolder A " and within which is another subfolder " subfolder B " that contains my site Website B so the path looks like root/sublfolder_A/subfolder_B/ that contains my **Website B ( i.e subfolder_B) ** All goes fine.When i access the website B from my desktop/Laptop Website B is loaded normally. but when i access the Website through a mobile device , mobile site of Website A is loaded while as it should load website_B Also , to let you know , both websites have different URL's and not subdomain's or anything. What could be the problem ? htaccess of website B or website A ? or something else ? I'm working on my resume for a job fair this week; any tips? [closed]

This will change as I update the document, but here is my resume. The job fair I'm going to is really huge (very good chance that it will determine where I intern this summer), so I would definitely appreciate any possible assistance in polishing this up. Any advice possible will be appreciated, ranging from spacing or absurdly minor formatting issues, to rearranging bullet points, to browser incompatibilities, to major changes in anything I've organised or written. At the moment, my only specific question is whether easter eggs are acceptable (specifically, if representatives who understand the reference will generally frown upon my inclusion of "Hacked The Gibson", given the context). Also, if anyone wants to evaluate it (e.g. font size, final arrangement, etc.), here is a PDF snapshot of the document at the time this question was submitted (the final version will have a different file name and appropriate metadata, for the record). Will Ubuntu be releasing an update for Cedar Trail Processors?

There is a file available on the Intel web site with the file name "cdv-gfx-drivers-1.0.1_bee.tar.bz2" and a date of July 6, 2012. It can be found by searching the Intel Download Center for the filename or the string "Linux* PowerVR Graphics/Media Drivers". The download page links to the file, release notes and a link, Enabling hardware accelerated playback that takes one to a page containing links to two pdf documents titled "Enabling Hardware Accelerated Playback for Intel® AtomTM Processor N2000/D2000 Series", one for Ubuntu and one for Fedora. The instruction and release notes speak to working with kernel 3.1.0 and since I do not feel I have the skills, knowledge or training to do anything else but, follow the instructions to the "T", I am very reluctant to try anything on my freshly updated 3.2.0 kernel. I would much rather use a Ubuntu supported kernel that applies these drivers and doesn't break anything in the process. Is it a case where this is so new that Canonical has not yet included these drivers but, soon will do so?

How to cache on CloudFlare images that are served to client as JSON?

I am using a gallery on my website that gets list of images from a JSON sent by a php script. So, the javascript gallery calls PHP backend and it replies with complex JSON where images are specified as object fields. These fields not necessarily include full URLs, merely a path to needed images. I'd like to use Cloudflare and want these images to be cached there. How I could learn whether these are cached or not, and make sure that these would be cached and not considered some sort of dynamic content?

Allow visitor to print something they bought only 1 time

I am doing a website that needs to only let the customer print out what they bought 1 time. There are websites that currently do this and they mentioned Adobe Flash Player, Adobe AIR and the Sheet Music Plus AIR application. We would need to block programs like adobe distillation and any virtual printers while only allowing an instant print after purchase. I am not an adobe air developer. Would their be any other ways to accomplish this and what would be the easiest. Thank you. Would their be a way to not allow printing to a virtual printer ie adobe pdf?
