• Will Windows Barf on Constant Video Driver Overwrite?

  So, I've got a Win7 64-bit gaming PC with GTX 260's. Recently, StarCraft 2 had an issue with flickering, which NVidia fixed with a new set of drivers. However, these new drivers induce unplayable graphical errors with Neverwinter Nights 2, something me and my friends still play from time to time. I am seeking advice on the "best" way to rectify this situation, to be able to switch between two driver releases, without compromising the stability of my system (if Windows stability isn't an oxymoron). I'm wondering if Windows 7 is structured in such a way that I can constantly reinstall these two sets of drivers back and forth overtop each other, possibly six or eight times a day, without very quickly driving myself to reformat to maintain that "just like new" performance. I'm loathe to have to reformat the drive and maintain two copies of the operating system, but I'll do it if I have to.

  I am rebuilding my work computer from scratch and need to add my domain user as a local admin on my computer. I have successfully added my PC to the domain, but I cannot add my domain user account to the local admins. I have tried to do the following: Connect to the work domain using a Windows VPN Add my computer to the work domain Start right click on Computer Manage - go to Users and Groups right click on Administrators group and add my domain user The problem is that after adding my domain user to the Administrators group, I don't see my domain user under the Local Users group. When I try to log on as my domain user I get the following error message: There are currently no logon servers available to service the logon request Any ideas?

• HDMI and DVI connected monitors not in dual view on Windows 7 (Intel onboard Gigabyte)

  I have a HDMI to DVI cable which is connected to one monitor (HDMI is on PC side) and DVI-DVI connected to other monitor. This seems to work up until the system is fully loaded (the startup logo animation is shown on two screens). When and after I log in only one monitor is active (HDMI-DVI). I'm also unable to detect the other monitor (DVI-DVI). Any ideas what might be wrong with the setup? Also when I uninstall the Intel Graphics driver both screens are on, but only duplication works. GA-Z68A-D3H-B3, Intel Z68 Chipset, with fresh VGA driver (15.26.1.64.2618).

• How do I start control panel with runas in Windows XP?

  Sometimes I need to make a config change on another user's PC. The user doesn't have admin rights so I try to start control panel using the runas command. I can start other stuff with the command but if I try to start control panel nothing happens. It doesn't even give me an error message. Alternatively I start another command prompt as admin (using the runas command again) and from that try to start control panel. Still no joy. Is control panel designed not to be startable from a non-admin profile as an admin user?

Then everything froze and locked when userlist showed. I could not move mouse pointer nor do anything with keyboard. Both, mouse and keyboard work fine, because this Ubuntu is dual-booting with a Windows XP install which loads/works fine. Here is my .xsession-errors file, but I don't have a clue what may be wrong. • Setting up scripts in Amazon EC2 Cloud

  Hello, I am currently running a few perl and python scripts on a windows pc and would like to port over to the Amazon EC2 servers running 64-bit LINUX. The scripts are basic web scrapers that go to a variety of websites, get data and then save daily as csv files. I would like to install these in the cloud and get them running in an automated way so that they will run without my intervention. Also given that I don't want to lose all the data if the instance crashes, I should also upload the csv files to Amazon S3. Any idea how I can do this? It's still "correcting" my texts. Searching for 'spelling correction' addons: The indicated option in the following borrowed screensnot does not exist on my PC. Is there any way of disabling it?   Hi all, I recently re-installed XP on my PC. I had a vpn set up on the old system and remember being advised to change one setting so that it wasn't the preferred route for all network traffic. This was ideal as only connections to the target network would be made through the vpn and all normal traffic would go through the regular path unmolested. i remember thinking "why isn't this the default setting!?". now i've formatted my drive and lost the config for that vpn (besides host, username, passwd). does anyone know of the setting i'm referring to? thanks, paul.

• vmware workstation - virtual network adapters missing from ipconfig, still show in networking (XP host)

  Hi Folks - here's a new one for me, and my first time posting here: I installed VMWare workstation 7.1 on a new PC. VMWare properly installs the virtual network adapters under the Network Connections control panel, however for some reason they do not show up under ipconfig, which is very weird. They also don't appear anywhere in "route print". I don't have network connectivity to the VM. My guesses are perhaps some conflict with Symantec AntiVirus or Symantec Client Firewall. Tried the following things: enabling TCP/IP in the virtual network adapters (they often get installed with it disabled for some reason) Restoring defualts in the VMnetcfg gui tool (this causes an uninstall and reinstall of the virtual network adapters on the host) Re-installing vmware workstation Uninstalling checkpoint secureremote and then reinstalling vmware Just to be clear, this problem is totally on the host. In my searching for stuff about (non-vmware) adapters missing from ipconfig, I see some posts about resetting the TCP/IP stack using netsh. Looking into that next... Thanks!

I connected my iPad to some new PC, Synced, then ticking Sync Apps from Devices-Apps will give me warning that all existing apps on my iPad will be replaced with those from Library-Apps. But in Library I have just couple old apps, which long time ago I used. So how I can sync the library in iTunes with my existing apps from iPad? EDIT: I have tried to click on Transfer Purchases, but not all of the items went to the library, just few of them.

• USB connection issue

  Currently Im facing an issue when Im trying to connect any usb flash drive to my pc. ok, below is what happens to me: 1) I can connect usb keyboard and mouse without any issue. 2) however when i connect usb flash drive, there are 2 situations that are occuring randomly a) there is no usb drive mount in my computer, when device manager is checked, it shows error code 10, but is shown in disk management. b) my computer will have usb drive mounted, but when I click on it, it is empty. on right click the properties, the disk space show 0. (there are files within the usb) what i have done is: 1) run CCleaner to repair the registry, restart and try, but still not working. 2) uninstall the drive in device manager, restart and try, but still not working. 3) tried the port that connects mouse and keyboard, but does not work. anyone who experienced these problems before please guide me. any suggestions or solutions would be greatly appreciated. • Software to replicate one computers display onto many other displays

  We have a classroom setup with one teachers pc at the front. I am looking for some software, preferably open source although this is not a deal breaker, to force all displays in the room to replicate the teachers display. Also if this software could be locked so the students could not exit this software while it was running. Does anyone know of any software that could perform this task? I have googled around for a solution but haven't found anything suitable as yet. It would be running on Windows 7 Flavours of the software I have found are: Lanschool and NetOp. Open source alternatives would be better.

• Is a computer's DRAM size not as important once we get a Solid State Drive?

  I am thinking of getting a Dell X11 netbook, and it can go up to 8GB of DRAM, together with a 256GB Solid State Drive. So in that case, it can handle quite a bit of Virtual PC running Linux, and Win XP, etc. But is the 8GB of RAM not so important any more? Won't 2GB or 4GB be quite good if a Solid State Drive is used? I think the most worrying thing is that the memory is not enough and the less often used data is swapped to the pagefile on hard disk and it will become really slow, but with an SSD drive, the problem is a lot less of a concern? Is there a comparison as to, if DRAM speed is n, then SSD drive speed is how many n and hard disk speed is how many n just as a ball park comparison?

  I'm aware of how to use VNC to share screens or grant remote control of your machine over the internet by using VNC or one of the web-based "go to my pc" type services. If two computers are connected to a router (i.e. standard home network), is there an easier way of viewing and controlling one computer from the other? I'd like to avoid going outside the LAN, onto the internet, then back in if possible. Both machines are Windows XP, but I'm not looking for Remote Desktop by the way.

• Batch Convert .mkv to .mp4 with VLC

  i want to batch convert all .mkv file in a folder into .mp4 with vlc. it should use the original video-/audio-stream and if possible the .ass subtitle of the .mkv. so its not really a convert, its more changing the container. (my player cant read the mkv) if i do this conversion by hand (manually) it works, but i have a lot of mkv to convert, so it would take a lot of time. i have searched the internet for a batch file to do this and i found a few and tried to modify them to my wish, but all attempts i tried just created a .mp4 file that doesn't contain the audio-stream and the video-stream also cannot be rendered by all my mediaplayers on the pc. so i would be very thankful, if you could tell me how the batch have to look like, so it works with original video-/audio-stream (maybe .ass subtitle)

• Printing documents on HP printer very slow

  I have a strange problem with HP drivers. I have configured a HP printer 2025dn with LAN connection, on 3 pc, using the cd rom of HP driver. All works well, but sometimes for certain documents the time for printing is very slow and long. I observe during this situation, in task manager, a process called rundll32.exe loads CPU at 100%. If I kill that process the printer starts printing fast the document in the queue. I wondering the reason of this strange behaviour.

• Windows 7 keeps losing drive letters

  Windows 7 loses its drive letters and I have to keep manually assigning a drive letter everytime I plug in a hard drive, whether it's internal or external. The only way to get around it is to reinstall Windows 7 but the problem will come back after a few months. We are a PC repair company and plug in many drives during the say and it can be very frustrating having to keep assigning a drive letter every time a drive is plugged in. Windows Updates are turned off so it can't be that. Any reason why this would have happened?

• Transferring filesystem-structured music collection to ipod

  I have a rather large music collection organized like music/<artist>/<album>/<track>-<title>.<fmt>, mostly mp3. However, the tagging is rather inconsistent, as on the PC or with better old players (Cowon D2+) I don't care and use the filesystem view. However, in the iTunes this all gets messed up because it doesn't care about file locations and looks at tags. What's worse though, it consistently splits compilations into single-track artist-albums. So, is there a way to take the existing filesystem artist-album structure and bring it to the form compatible with iTunes/iPod? Again, I don't care about tags. Automated approach is most welcome, but at least please direct me to some document specifying all the little details about iTunes' metadata requirement for compilations.

  My Windows XP PC has stopped booting. On start up, before Windows boots a screen appears saying: Windows Could Not Boot: Could Not Find or Corrupted file <Windows root>\Sytem32\Hal.dll Please Reinstall the file... From that I understand that I have to reinstall the OS but my computer is so old that I have lost the backup and recovery disk. My Computer's Info: 32Bit Computer Pentium 4 Windows XP Service Pack 2 HP History: My Computer has 4 hard drives 2 internal 40 GB drives (C And D) 2 external 8GB drives (E And F) Additional Info: I need the files inside C And E The computer reads my flash drive as a hard drive (8.45GB)(I have never booted while my USB pluged in while I was troubleshooting) With some test I discovered that the C drive wasn't detected by the computer I have already configured the boot order of BiOS I have Set The SATA to IDE The Question: I have a setup for windows 8 32 bit how can I boot from my USB to run that setup? If that isn't the proper way to handle this problem please tell me the proper way.

  I have installed Windows XP Virtual PC on Windows 7 to test a site that is having issues in IE7 on windows xp - the website loads up but you cannot click on hyperlinks - its like the website has frozen - now is this a browser support issue or OS issue? Can anyone shed any light on this? Is there any browser tools i can use to spot any problems? Sorry if i have been too vague - not much else to say really - completely lost.. Maybe this might help a little; Any guidance is appreciated UPDATE: I think i know what the problem maybe - its the jQuery UI reference that is causing issues with the site. • I need a few minutes of dedicated server a week, but not for hosting, just to convert ogg etc

  I'm completely happy with my webhosting, it's just that I need to do one little thing they won't allow, and that's run an instance of Sox to convert about 30 mp3s to ogg files, in various directories, a couple of times a week, to be done automatically in response to the detection of the upload of an mp3. Probably looking at a minute of server time over the whole week. I've had unhelpful suggestions on other forums like "why not leave your home PC on 24 hours a day and then use all your isp bandwidth to do this", which doesn't work for me. I know that I can host files on, say, Amazon S3, but is there something similar for my needs? All it would need to do would be: wget/ftp the mp3 files, convert them to ogg, ftp the files back to my hosting. Of course, all this wouldn't be needed if there was such a thing as a compiled binary of Sox (or any mp3ogg converter) for Centos which I could upload without needing root access, but I've given up asking that one, but always open to suggestions!

• Windows app that can stream video over local net with remote browsing

  What I want: An app that runs on a windows 7 computer that can stream movies to the other computers in the house. I want to be able to brows the movies on my "server" from the other computers and start streaming. I'm aware that VLC can do some (all?) of this but it's looks to complicated for my 6year old to use. Ideally I'd like something "Air Video Server" but for mac/win computers with a native client for browsing the movies on the PC running as server.
