• What are the advantages and limitations of using Qt for game development? [on hold]

  I know there is already a thread asking for example 3d games written using Qt. What I'd like to have a discussion about is whether or not Qt is a good framework for game development. In my experience Qt is a joy to work with and thanks to QML and QML/3d it's looking like it could be a viable framework for game development. The thought of using signals and slots for gamedev is exciting. I'd like to hear some opinions on Qt in general as a game development platform. What are it's limitations? What are it's advantages? • Could multiple uses of the same word in image alt tags hurt SEO?

  Let's say on an e-commerce site that sells unique pens, on a particular pen's product page, the image of the pen has an alt tag of "unique red-striped pen"... and another product has "unique blue-spotted pen", etc. The key words across all products being "unique" and "pen", which would also be helpful when it comes to SEO. However, if the person just goes to the general "unique pens" category page and sees a list of thumbnail images, each with the words "unique" and "pen" in the alt tag, would that potentially have a negative impact with regards to SEO by having the words too many times?

• Charakter coding / programming

  lately I tryed a few times to create charakters for some games, but at some certain point (especially when collision detection came in) everything became messy and the interaction between chars, the world and certain items had a lot of bugs. So here is my question, how do you ussualy keep track of actions that your charakter is allowed to do, or more in general do you have some links / advices how to set up a char efficiantly? I´m working on a char right now, who should at least be able to run, jump, pick items up and use different fighting animations. Most ideas I came up with until now use some kind of action.priority / action.duration system to determain whats possible and what not, or a "action-manager" which defines for every action what is possible from that action on but it all doesnt work that well together =\ thx in advance for some input

• How does Google store search trends in backend?

  Google trends shows what query has been searched how many times and some other properties of the said query. But how is this data stored in a database? Storing a new row for every search does not seem right. They also tell the query on a time graph, so they must have some way to look for individual searches made by users, but the number of queries they get every day, it does not feel right that they would store every search in a database row along with a time-stamp. This does not apply to just Google trends or Google in general but any other big site that gets awful number of queries and then has tools to see them in depth. I am not an expert on this but I am interested to know some high level structure of how things work behind the scenes.

• How can robots beat CAPTCHAs?

  I have a website e-mail form. I use a custom CAPTCHA to prevent spam from robots. Despite this, I still get spam. Why? How do robots beat the CAPTCHA? Do they use some kind of advanced OCR or just get the solution from where it is stored? How can I prevent this? Should I change to another type of CAPTCHA? I am sure the e-mails are coming from the form, because it is sent from my email-sender that serves the form messages. Also the letter style is the same. For the record, I am using PHP + MySQL, but I'm not searching for a solution to this problem. I was interested in the general situation how the robots beat these technologies. I just told this situation as an example, so you can understand better what I'm asking about.

• Math behind multivariate testing for website optimization

  I am looking for theoretical resources (books, tutorials, etc.) to learn about making sound statistical inferences given (plenty of) multivariate website conversion data. I'm after the math involved, and cannot find any good non-marketing stuff on the web. The sort of questions I want to answer: how much impact does a single variable (e.g. color of text) have? what is the correlation between variables? what type of distribution is used for modelling (Gaussian, Binomial, etc.)? When using statistics to analyze results - what should be considered as a random variable - the web-page element that gets different variations or the binary conversion-or-no-conversion outcome of an impression? There's plenty of information about different website optimization testing methods and their benefits\pitfalls, plenty of information about multivariate statistics in general, do you guys know of resources that discuss statistics in this specific context of website optimization ?   I'm really curious right now. I'm a Python programmer, and this question just boggled me: You write an OS. How do you run it? It has to be run somehow, and that way is within another OS? How can an application run without being in an OS? How do you tell the computer to run, say, C, and execute these commands to the screen, if it doesn't have an OS to run in? Does it have to do with a UNIX kernel? If so, what is a unix kernel, or a kernel in general? I'm sure OSes are more complicated than that, but how does it work? It would be really brilliant to know this! Thanks.

I use 3d Max and Photoshop on a daily basis, and I was thinking about aiming for a career in videogames, starting as a level/environment designer. How should approach it? Is it worthy to spend some time learning UDK or CryEngine? Should I try a smaller but more general software? I know some programming already. • Advice on approaching a significant rearrangement/refactoring?

  I'm working on an application (hobby project, solo programmer, small-medium size), and I have recently redesigned a significant part of it. The program already works in it's current state, but I decided to reimplement things to improve the OO design. I'm about to implement this new design by refactoring a big part of the application. Thing is I'm not sure where to start. Obviously, by the nature of a rearrangement, the moment you change one part of the program several other parts (at least temporarily) break. So it's a little 'scary' to rearrange something in a piece of software that already works. I'm asking for advice or some general guidelines: how should I approach a significant refactoring? When you approach rearranging large parts of your application, where do you start? Note that I'm interested only in re-arranging the high-level structure of the app. I have no intention of rewriting local algorithms.

• Good book about advanced programming techniques [closed]

  I am looking to a book covering adavnced programming techniques, covering different practical scenarios and describing the different challanges with the relative solutions. As example, which are the best ways to implement a module for buying on a web application with credit card or how to manage responsivenes for the frontend of the web application itself (dealing with cache, optimeze plugins, etc). On the web there are tons of tutorials about these topics, but I am looking for a book where such cases are collected all together and treated by real professionists. If the book would provide some code samples, that would be a plus (especially if C# .NET), but I am more interested in the approach/solution rather than the code details. I could not find any of these cases in the general book about programming, therefore I hope someone might point me in the right direction. EDIT: I have 4 years experience as web developer, mainly with Microsoft (C#, ASP.NET, SQL Server) and client side technologies (jQuery, HTML/CSS).

  I'm looking at a new chapter in my career. I'm a web developer, but now I'm starting to play around with C, compilers, and things I didn't have to work with before. It's all very intriguing! As I'm getting more and more into the "lower level" arena, I'm wondering how devices (mice, printers, webcams, microphones, etc...) are controlled, managed, detected, or used in general with software. I ask because I'm really having a hard time finding straightforward documentation online describing or giving examples of how hardware interacts with software. From looking at popular open-source frameworks for both front-end and back-end, I have a general idea of what the modern full-stack web setup looks like: Database <- Back-end language ~ REST API <- Front-end Notes: The back-end language (Python, Ruby, PHP, Java) generates the API, which is the only layer between the back and the front. The API will have authentication to protect private data. The front-end sends GET and POST requests to the API. A MVC framework can be used, such as Backbone, Angular, or Ember.js. Does this align with best practices for web development?

  I'm looking for a label to describe the practice of using human-based computation methods or other means of "faking" an algorithm for the sake of getting a product or demo off the ground quickly without spending the time to develop an technical/scalable/analytical solution? Eg: using Amazon Turk to count the number of empty tables in a restaurant. I'm also looking to learn more about this subject, but not sure what to search for. • How can I ensure reasonably spaced out enemies

  I have a simple javascript game and I'm initializing their positions on the y axis using random numbers. How can I ensure that they are reasonably spaced apart? My simple algorithm is: y = (Math.random()*1000%600); However I frequently get enemies almost directly on top of each other. This is a huge problem for the game, since it's a word game and the enemies have text on their center, that if overlapped makes them impossible to kill since you can't see the words. Any advice would be appreciated! I'm pretty new to making games in general so this has all been a learning experience for me!

• Connection make b/w iphone to windows pc-rajay [on hold]

  I Need to create connection between ios to windows by using socket programming in ios. I'm trying to to use an application to communicate with Windows via sockets. At the minimum, I'm trying to at least figure out how I can create a connection from the iPhone (maybe using the iPhone to ping the Windows machine?) I'm not really clear on where I need to start. I'm pretty new to iOS development in general, and brand new to socket/network programming. I've tried several tutorials that haven't gotten me far. My goal is: Connect to a server via sockets (the server will be a Windows machine with a service waiting for incoming connections from the iPhone) If possible, I would like to write/build the client piece first, but I have been lost thus far. Hopefully the nice folks in the SO community can lend a hand and point me in the right direction.

• Googling query from anywhere

  Some times when I am trying out stuff on my terminal, I get some blockade or some error to resolve which I have to copy the error or last message then open my browser and then Google the query. Is it possible for me that I select the message via mouse and when I right click I get a Google it option as I get when I select some text on a browser? PS : I am not asking how to do Google search via terminal or how to browse web via terminal.These were the results I got when I goggled my question. what I want is something more general. Whenever I select a piece of text I should get a "Google me" option with the right click of my mouse(or maybe with pressing of a key or something). I would prefer that the query takes place in a browser and not in a terminal.

• What class structure allows for a base class and mix/match of subclasses? (Similar to Users w/ roles)

  I have a set of base characteristics, and then a number of sub-types. Each instance must be one of the sub-types, but can be multiple sub-types at once. The sub-types of each thing can change. In general, I don't care what subtype I have, but sometimes I do care. This is much like a Users-Roles sort of relationship where a User having a particular Role gives the user additional characteristics. Sort of like duck-typing (ie. If my Foo has a Bar, I can treat it like a ThingWithABar.) Straight inheritance doesn't work, since that doesn't allow mix/match of sub-types. (ie. no multi-inheritance). Straight composition doesn't work because I can't switch that up at runtime. How can I model this?

  I have a rather large collection of classes which check and mutate a given data structure. They can be composed via the composition pattern into arbitrarily complex tree-like structures. The final product contains a lot of these composed structures. My question is now: How can I test those? Albeit it is easy to test every single unit of these compositions, it is rather expensive to test the whole compositions in the following sense: Testing the correct layout of the composition-tree results in a huge number of test cases Changes in the compositions result in a very laborious review of every single test case What is the general guideline here?

• Would it be possible to make an android app like this?

  I'm fairly new to android development and I'm not sure if the functionality I have in mind for my next project is actually feasible. I wanted to make a simple study guide app...when a user is browsing the web on their phone and they come across information they want to save to their study guide they would be able to highlight the sentence,long-click the highlighted text, and see an option to add it to their study guide(a pop-up list would appear). there would be more functionality than just this, for instance with-in the app you could create different study guide topics (biology,math, English..ect). But in general is it possible to have an app that is accessible by long-clicking when your browsing the web (as opposed to opening the App manually in order to use it.) -- If not, could I make it so you can open a browser within the app to do what I've described? This is going to be a school project so I don't care if it's totally original, I just want to make something simple and practical for practice. -- Thanks in advanced to anyone who helps!! :D
