• What is the benefit of the "download will begin shortly" page?

  I've noticed many websites that host files for downloads have an interstitial page between the download link/button and the actual start of the download. Terminology on the page may include "Your download will begin shortly. If it does not, try this direct link". What is the purpose of this page? It seems to draw away from the general experience of downloading a file. Is this beneficial for bookmarking? Less experienced users? Analytics?

  I'm starting up a Git repository for a group project. Does it make sense to store documents in the same Git repository as code - it seems like this conflicts with the nature of the git revision flow. Here is a summary of my question(s): Is the Git revisioning style going to be confusing if both code and documents are checked into the same repository? Experiences with this? Is Git a good fit for documentation revision control? I am NOT asking if a Revision Control System in general should or shouldn't be used for documentation - it should.   Possible Duplicate: What is duplicate content and how can I avoid being penalized for it on my site? I have two domains pointing to the same site. I want both domains to co-exist, they share most of the same content, but they differ in design and they are aimed at different markets / rivaling communities. Is there a way to let google know that these two domains are the same site and don't cause me to get hit with a duplicate content penalty?   Want to use h264 in my commercial program. What steps should I take? Here is what I see that needs to be done. I need to buy a license from VideoLan (x264licensing.com) to use the library to encode video into h264 format and I need to buy a license from the MpegLAGroup to use the h264 video encoding in general in my commercial product. Am I right in thinking that? How much do these cost? I don't see selling much since my target is very niche (video game screen capturing).

• Free Models and Related Animations for AI project in Unity [on hold]

  Does anybody know a good website where to find free models and animations for AI projects? I'm not talking about anything good looking, like stuff you would look for when building a proper game, but, for example, a bunch of male/female models that are able to walk around and that would substitute my ugly "capsules", just to give a better -yet, still rough - idea of what's going on in the scene. On the Unity Asset Store there are a bunch of nice male/female models, but i haven't found any free general-purpose(i.e. normal walking) animation attachable to them. Any tip would we appreciated, thanks :)

• Collision representation in game overworlds

  I'm implementing a 2D overworld where one can walk through an area that is not tile based. I was wondering the best way to implement collisions. In the past when I've done similar things, I've used one image (or set of images) to show an elaborately drawn world and then a second binary image that does nothing but differentiate "wall" and "not wall". Then, I'd use the first for all drawing to the screen, but the second for collision detection. Having another image of the same size to represent collisions seems like lots of overhead. Is there a better way to handle this? (I'm currently using C++ with SDL, although I'm more interested in general concepts)

• Why is not there a python compiler to native machine's code?

  As I understand, the cause of the speed difference between compiled languages and python is, that the first compiles code all way to the native machine's code, whereas python compiles to python bytecode, to be interpreted by the PVM. I see that this way python codes can be used on multiple operation system (at least in most cases), however I do not understand, why is not there an additional (and optional) compiler for python, which compiles the same way as traditional compilers. This would leave to the programmer to chose, which is more important to them; multiplatform executability or performance on native machine. In general; why are not there any languages which could be behave both as compiled and interpreted?

  not exactly sure where I should post this but I have a question about filing for software patents. If I have an idea for a UI feature, how do I go about patenting that feature. I don't have any code written and I'm afraid my coding skills aren't up to snuff in order to code the thing I imagined but aside from that, can anyone give me any general guidance and info? I've gone through the CIPO site (Canada's patent office) but haven't come away with enough information on what I'm trying to patent but what I have understood is that I have to very thorough in describing what I'm trying to patent and showing that it could work. If anyone has gone through the process of patenting software, can you tell me about your experience? I would like to hear about US and Canadian experiences Thank you!

  I'm really curious right now. I'm a Python programmer, and this question just boggled me: You write an OS. How do you run it? It has to be run somehow, and that way is within another OS? How can an application run without being in an OS? How do you tell the computer to run, say, C, and execute these commands to the screen, if it doesn't have an OS to run in? Does it have to do with a UNIX kernel? If so, what is a Unix kernel, or a kernel in general? I'm sure OSes are more complicated than that, but how does it work?

Now multiple documents can be opened at the same time, either from "File | Open File" or from the File Browser (i.e., the rebranded Favorites window). • Does it make sense to use jQuery in modern-webkit-only web applications?

  I'm lately working on a few mobile web apps for Android (2.3+) and iOS (4+). Their browsers support most of ECMAScript5, which is very powerful, and I wanted to use language features where possible, resorting to jQuery only when I had to. Turns out the only thing I use jQuery for is to have a shorter alternative for document.querySelectorAll. Might as well get rid of it. If I only have to support modern WebKit browsers, is it a good idea to get rid of jQuery (and other general-purpose libraries)? They are a layer of indirection, after all. (The apps don't have to make AJAX calls so far, I guess that's one thing that's going to get ugly. But is it worth keeping jQuery just for that?)

• Is there an effective way to test XSL transforms/BizTalk maps?

  Creating repeatable tests for BizTalk maps is frustrating. I can't find a way to handle testing them like I'd do unit testing, because I can't find ways to break them into logical chunks. They tend to be one big monolithic unit, and any change has the potential to ripple through the map and break a lot of unit tests. Even if I could break it up, creating XML test inputs is painful and error prone. Is there any effective way of testing these? I'd settle for recommendations for testing XSL transforms in general, but I specifically mention BizTalk maps primarily for the reason that when using the mapper, there really isn't any way to break your XSLT into templates (which I'd imagine you could use to break up your logic into testable chunks, but I've honestly never gotten that far with XSLT).

• Managing large downloadable content on mobile devices

  This is a general question of how to best manage large downloadable content on mobile devices. Lets consider a situation whereby a mobile app needs to download a number of very large content items, like HD videos, that are over 500MB but under 2GB. Now, lets assume this content delivery system should be scalable. Would it be a fair assumption that: A reputable cloud service would be needed - if so, what is a reliable and cost effective cloud service for mobile devices based on anyone's experience? Large content downloads should only be attempted over a wifi connection, so the end user doesn't incur large costs, e.g. when travelling. Downloads should carry on in the background if possible, as the user won't want to wait in an app for long periods. If the downloads don't finish, or the OS quits the app, all downloads should carry on when the app is next activated? Are there any other pitfalls anyone may have experienced when managing large content on mobile devices? Thanks.

• How do global cancel/exit commands work in bash?

  As I have done multiple times before, I've written bash scripts, and just general commands that go nowhere. They just blink the little command line cursor at me for infinity until I control+C the command. When I do cancel the command, what exactly is going on when I do this? Am I somehow stopping and killing the current PID I'm working on? Does it jump to a different run-level and execute something to terminate the command? On a slightly different note, I've never been able to figure out how to set up something like this in a script or program I've worked on. Since I mostly program in Ruby, can I setup something like a certain key press stops the program? Every time I've looked into doing something similar, I always end up getting hung up when it comes to user input, whether that is a loop waiting for a condition, or something like this: def Break() user_break = gets.strip end def Main() Function1() Break() Function2() Break() [...] end It seems and is incredibly bulky, and definitely isn't easily scaled up or down.

Seperate them in two series, an arithmetic sequence and geometric sequence. The given array is such that a solution do exist. The union of numbers of the two sequence must be the given array. Both series can have common elements i.e. series need not to be disjoint. The ratio of the geometric series can be fractional. Example: Given series : 2,4,6,8,10,12,25 AP: 2,4,6,8,10,12 GP: 4,10,25 I tried taking few examples but could not reach a general way. Even tried some graph implementation by introducing edges if they follow a particular sequence but could not reach solution.

• Error after installing Lubuntu 14.04 through liveUSB

  A friend asked me to install ubuntu on his toshiba NB 200 netbook to replace windows xp. I formatted the flash drive, ran an nb5sum check on the iso and after running netbootin , I checked the drive for errors. No problems so far. During the installation, while everything seemed normal, the installation regularly paused until I pressed a button or moved the mouse. After restarting, it doesn't boot and it starts a shell showing : "General error mounting filesystems A maintenance shell will now be started CONTROL-D will terminate this shell and reboot the system " Any ideas? Any help is appreciated!

I plan to develop a Python program that sends the URL of a given website to a virtual machine where the dynamic execution of the eventual malicious JavaScript embedded in the website's page is monitored. My questions: Should my VM be Windows or Linux ? What if the malware damages my VM: is there a hint how to avoid that ? Or launch a new VM automatically instead ?   Does Java have a built-in Vector class suitable for handling collision detection / response? It should have methods like subtract(Vector v), normalize(), dotProduct(Vector v), ... It seems logical to use java.awt.Rectangle and java.awt.Polygon to calculate collisions. Would I be right to use these classes for this purpose? I understand collision detection; I'm only wondering what approach to it is idiomatic in Java. I'm new to the language and to application development in general.
