  I am currently trying to implement a Swing component, inheriting from JLabel which should simply represent a label that can be oriented vertically. However, placement and size are off: Actually, the width of the background (orange in this case) is identical with the height of the surrounding JFrame which is ... not quite what I had in mind. Any ideas how to solve that in a proper way? Is delegating rendering to superclasses even encouraged?

• How to get image's coordinate on JPanel

  This question is related to my previous question http://stackoverflow.com/questions/2376027/how-to-generate-cartesian-coordinate-x-y-from-gridbaglayout I have successfully get the coordinate of each pictures, however when I checked the coordinate through (System.out.println) and the placement of the images on the screen, it seems to be wrong. e.g. if on the screen it was obvious that the x point of the first picture is on cell 2 which is on coordinate of 20, but the program shows x=1. I'm positive that filter.value is defined and available on the scope even though Angular thinks it's not for some reason. I'm not quite sure what I'm doing wrong. Any help is much appreciated.

  I am using miglayout to create a form in which there are JTextFields (short input answers) as well as JTextAreas (Longer answers). The problem is twofold. The border placed around a Scrollpane wrapped text area does not match that of a Text Field. The width and placement of the textarea/textfield differ, causing them not to line up correctly.   I am preparing a short tutorial for level 1 uni students learning JavaScript basics. The task is to validate a phone number. The number must not contain non-digits and must be 14 digits long or less. The following code excerpt is what I came up with and I would like to make it as readable as possible. if ( //set of rules for invalid phone number phoneNumber.length == 0 //empty || phoneNumber.length > 14 //too long || /\D/.test(phoneNumber) //contains non-digits ) { setMessageText(invalid); } else { setMessageText(valid); } A simple question I can not quite answer myself and would like to hear your opinions on: How to position the surrounding (outermost) brackets? It's hard to see the difference between a normal and a curly bracket. Do you usually put the last ) on the same line as the last condition? Do you keep the first opening ( on a line by itself? Do you wrap each individual sub-condition in brackets too? Do you align horizontally the first ( with the last ), or do you place the last ) in the same column as the if? Do you keep ) { on a separate line or you place the last ) on the same line with the last sub-condition and then place the opening { on a new line? Or do you just put the ) { on the same line as the last sub-condition? Community wiki. EDIT Please only post opinions regarding the usage and placement of brackets. The code needs not be re-factored. This is for people who have only been introduced to JavaScript a couple of weeks ago. I am not asking for opinions how to write the code so it's shorter or performs better. • Passing arguments to objects created using the new operator?

  Hi guys, I have a small C++ problem to which I don't know the best solution. I have two classes A and B as follows: class A { int n; B* b; public: A(int num): n(num) { b = new B[n]; for (int i = 0; i < n; i++) { b[i].setRef(this); } } ~A() { delete [] b; } }; class B { A* a; public: B() { } B(A* aref) { a = aref; } void setRef(A* aref) { a = aref; } }; I am creating an object of class A by passing to its constructor the number of objects of class B I want to be created. I want every object of class B to hold a pointer to the class A object that creates it. I think the best way to do this would be by passing the pointer to the class A object as a constructor argument to the class B object. However, since I'm using the new operator, the no-args constructor for class B is called. As a result, the only solution I can see here is calling the setRef(A*) method for every object of class B after it has been constructed using the new operator. Is there a better solution/design pattern that would be more applicable here? Would using placement new for class B be a better solution? Thanks in advance for your help.

  Microsoft JScript runtime error: 'txtGivenName_OnFocus' is undefined After adding what I thought was unrelated javascript code to a web page, I am suddenly getting errors that suggest that the browser cannot locate a javascript function that, to me, appears plain as day in design mode. I'm thinking that this is a load sequence order problem of some sort. Originally, my script was at the bottom of the page. I did this with the intent of helping my site's SEO ranking. When I moved the function to the top of the web page, the error went away. Now it is back. I have a feeling someone is going to suggest a jQuery solution to execute some code only when the page is fully loaded. I'm I ignorant of jQuery. IfjQuery is given in the answer, please explain what I need to do (references, placement of script files) for VS 2010 RTM. • Open a buffer as a vertical split in VIM

  If you are editing a file in VIM and then you need to open an existing buffer (e.g. from your buffer list: :buffers) how can you open it in a vertical split? I know that you already can open it with a normal split like: :sbuffer N Wehere N is the buffer number you want, however, the above opens that N buffer horizontally, not vertically. I'm also aware that you can change the window placement after opening and have a Vertical Split like so: Ctrl-W H Ctrl-W L Which will vertically split the window to the right or the left. It seems to me that if there is a sbuffer there should be a vsbuffer but that doesn't exist (not that I am aware of) Also, please note that I am not looking for a plugin to solve this question. I know about a wealth of plugins that will allow you to do this. I am sure I might be missing something that is already there. EDIT: In the best spirit of collaboration, I have created a simple Function with a Mapping if someone else stumbles across this issue and do not want to install a plugin: Function: " Vertical Split Buffer Function function VerticalSplitBuffer(buffer) execute "vert belowright sb" a:buffer endfunction Mapping: " Vertical Split Buffer Mapping command -nargs=1 Vbuffer call VerticalSplitBuffer(<f-args>) This accomplishes the task of opening a buffer in a right split, so for buffer 1, you would call it like: :Vbuffer 1

• Why is creating a ring buffer shared by different processes so hard (in C++), what I am doing wrong?

  I am being especially dense about this but it seems I'm missing an important, basic point or something, since what I want to do should be common: I need to create a fixed-size ring buffer object from a manager process (Process M). This object has write() and read() methods to write/read from the buffer. The read/write methods will be called by independent processes (Process R and W) I have implemented the buffer, SharedBuffer<T&>, it allocates buffer slots in SHM using boost::interprocess and works perfectly within a single process. I have read the answers to this question and that one on SO, as well as asked my own, but I'm still in the dark about how to have different processes access methods from a common object. The Boost doc has an example of creating a vector in SHM, which is very similar to what I want, but I want to instantiate my own class. My current options are: Use placement new, as suggested by Charles B. to my question; however, he cautions that it's not a good idea to put non-POD objects in SHM. But my class needs the read/write methods, how can I handle those? Add an allocator to my class definition, e.g. have SharedBuffer<T&, Alloc> and proceed similarly to the vector example given in boost. This sounds really complicated. Change SharedBuffer to a POD class, i.e. get rid of all the methods. But then how to synchronize reading and writing between processes? What am I missing? Fixed-length ring buffers are very common, so either this problem has a solution or else I'm doing something wrong.

• Putting a C++ Vector as a Member in a Class that Uses a Memory Pool

  Hey, I've been writing a multi-threaded DLL for database access using ADO/ODBC for use with a legacy application. I need to keep multiple database connections for each thread, so I've put the ADO objects for each connection in an object and thinking of keeping an array of them inside a custom threadInfo object. Obviously a vector would serve better here - I need to delete/rearrange objects on the go and a vector would simplify that. Problem is, I'm allocating a heap for each thread to avoid heap contention and stuff and allocating all my memory from there. So my question is: how do I make the vector allocate from the thread-specific heap? (Or would it know internally to allocate memory from the same heap as its wrapper class - sounds unlikely, but I'm not a C++ guy) I've googled a bit and it looks like I might need to write an allocator or something - which looks like so much of work I don't want. Is there any other way? I've heard vector uses placement-new for all its stuff inside, so can overloading operator new be worked into it? My scant knowledge of the insides of C++ doesn't help, seeing as I'm mainly a C programmer (even that - relatively). It's very possible I'm missing something elementary somewhere. If nothing easier comes up - I might just go and do the array thing, but hopefully it won't come to that. I'm using MS-VC++ 6.0 (hey, it's rude to laugh! :-P ). Any/all help will be much appreciated.

• Inconsistent height of text input elements between Firefox and WebKit

  OK, I realize that this is something of an eternal question, but here goes: I've got a single text input, <input type="text" name="whatever" /> and I've specified its font-family, font-size and padding. Yet, even on the same machine (my Mac, let's say), the input has a different height in Firefox (3.6) than it does in Chrome or Safari. Specifically, Firefox adds a little bit more padding below the text. And no, specifying height in pixels doesn't achieve consistency either. Is there any way to achieve text input height consistency across Gecko- and WebKit-based browsers (let alone IE and Opera) without resorting to JavaScript? And if I must use JavaScript, has someone already devised a jQuery plugin or something to easily do this? Update: Here's what not to do. The jqTransform plugin lets you skin form elements and promises that they'll look the same across browsers. Here's how the demo input looks in Chrome 5 on my Mac: and here's how the same input looks in Firefox 3.6.4: I haven't altered these screenshots in any way, just cropped them. Now, my first reaction is, "Ugh, I don't want to support Firefox." But there are currently more Firefox users than Safari and Chrome users combined, so that's not an option. Someone, please help! I just want my forms to look the same across modern, standards-compliant browsers! And by "look the same," I'm not talking about the outline on selection or anything like that; I'm just talking about having the same width, height, and text placement!

• UITableViewCell imageView images loading small even when they are the correct size!

  Im having an issue whilst loading images into a UITableViewCell after an asynchronous download and placement into an UIImage variable.. The images appear smaller than they actually are! But when scrolled down and scrolled back up to the image, or the whole table is reloaded, they appear at the correct size...   I have a method in a Ruby script that is attempting to rename files before they are saved. It looks like this: def increment (path) if path[-3,2] == "_#" print " Incremented file with that name already exists, renaming\n" count = path[-1].chr.to_i + 1 return path.chop! << count.to_s else print " A file with that name already exists, renaming\n" return path << "_#1" end end Say you have 3 files with the same name being saved to a directory, we'll say the file is called example.mp3. The idea is that the first will be saved as example.mp3 (since it won't be caught by if File.exists?("#{file_path}.mp3") elsewhere in the script), the second will be saved as example_#1.mp3 (since it is caught by the else part of the above method) and the third as example_#2.mp3 (since it is caught by the if part of the above method). The problem I have is twofold. 1) if path[-3,2] == "_#" won't work for files with an integer of more than one digit (example_#11.mp3 for example) since the character placement will be wrong (you'd need it to be path[-4,2] but then that doesn't cope with 3 digit numbers etc). 2) I'm never reaching problem 1) since the method doesn't reliably catch file names. At the moment it will rename the first to example_#1.mp3 but the second gets renamed to the same thing (causing it to overwrite the previously saved file). This is possibly too vague for Stack Overflow but I can't find anything that addresses the issue of incrementing a certain part of a string. Thanks in advance!

  I've picked up Programming Challenges and found a Yahtzee! problem which I will simplify: There are 13 scoring categories There are 13 rolls by a player (comprising a play) Each roll must fit in a distinct category The goal is to find the maximum score for a play (the optimal placement of rolls in categories); score(play) returns the score for a play Brute-forcing to find the maximum play score requires 13! (= 6,227,020,800) score() calls. I choose simulated annealing to find something close to the highest score, faster. Though not deterministic, it's good enough. I have a list of 13 rolls of 5 die, like: ((1,2,3,4,5) #1 (1,2,6,3,4),#2 ... (1,4,3,2,2) #13 ) And a play (1,5,6,7,2,3,4,8,9,10,13,12,11) passed into score() returns a score for that play's permutation. How do I choose a good "neighboring state"? For random-restart, I can simply choose a random permutation of nos. 1-13, put them in a vector, and score them. In the traveling salesman problem, here's an example of a good neighboring state: "The neighbours of some particular permutation are the permutations that are produced for example by interchanging a pair of adjacent cities." I have a bad feeling about simply swapping two random vector positions, like so: (1,5,6,7, 2 , 3,4,8,9,10, 13, 12,11) # switch 2 and 13 (1,5,6,7, 13, 3,4,8,9,10, 2 , 12,11) # now score this one But I have no evidence and don't know how to select a good neighboring state. Anyone have any ideas on how to pick good neighboring states?

  It is nice when there isn't a DB to maintain and users to authenticate. My professor has asked me to convert a recent research project of his that uses Bespin and calculates errors made by users in a code editor as part of his research. The goal is to convert from MySQL to using HTML5 localStorage completely. Doesn't seem so hard to do, even though digging in his code might take some time. Question: I need to store files and state (last placement of cursor and active file). I have already done so by implementing the recommendations in another stackoverflow thread. But would like your input considering how to structure the content to use. My current solution Hashmap like solution with javascript objects: files = {}; // later, saving files[fileName] = data; And then storing in localStorage using some recommendations localStorage.setObject(files): Currently I'm also considering using some type of numeric id. So that names can be changed without any hassle renaming the key in the hashmap. What is your opinion on the way it is solved and would you do it any differently?

  I will be entering my third year of university in my next academic year, once I've finished my placement year as a web developer, and I would like to hear some opinions on the two modules in the Title. I'm interested in both, however I want to pick one that will be relevant to my career and that I can apply to systems I develop. I'm doing an Internet Computing degree, it covers web development, networking, database work and programming. Though I have had myself set on becoming a web developer I'm not so sure about that any more so am trying not to limit myself to that area of development. I know HCI would help me as a web developer, but do you think it's worth it? Do you think Neural Network knowledge could help me realistically in a system I write in the future? Thanks. EDIT: Hi guys, I thought it would be useful to follow-up with what I decided to do and how it's worked out. I picked Artificial Neural Networks over HCI, and I've really enjoyed it. Having a peek into cognitive science and machine learning has ignited my interest for the subject area, and I will be hoping to take on a postgraduate project a few years from now when I can afford it. I have got a job which I am starting after my final exams (which are in a few days) and I was indeed asked if I had done a module in HCI or similar. It didn't seem to matter, as it isn't a front-end developer position! I would recommend taking the module if you have it as an option, as well as any module consisting of biological computation, it will open up more doors should you want to go onto postgraduate research in the future.
