Configure 27" 2560x1440 for a monitor with corrupt EDID

I am trying to get a monitor work with my Ubuntu laptop. The monitor is this cheap 27" Korean monitors which has a 2560x1440 resolution -- and nothing else. Here are some specifications of this monitor: 2560x1440 @60Hz Only one dual link DVI-D input -- no other input port (no HDMI or display port) no OSD no scalar reports corrupt EDID does 2560x1440 @60Hz, did I say that already? Anyways, the monitor works beautifully with my Ubuntu desktop which has an nVidia card with DVI output. However, I am having problem using this monitor with my laptop. After some searching around I found a few posts suggesting to use an active adaptor for mini display port, so I went and bought a mini display to dual link DVI-D adaptor.. When using this adaptor the monitor is recognized by nvidia-settings tool but with incorrect resolution information. As you can see the monitor is incorrectly recognized and there are no other resolution available to set. This post on ubuntu forums and this other post on overclock both suggest that the monitor is reporting corrupt EDID file. I have tried following their instructions, but so far I have not been able to display any image on the monitor from my laptop. The laptop I am using is an ASUS G75VW with a 1920x1080 screen. It has a VGA, an HDMI 1.4a, and a mini display port. The graphic card is an nvidia gforce gtx 660M with 2GB dedicated memory. I am running Ubuntu 12.10 on here which I upgrade from 12.04 a few weeks ago. As I said I have tried several suggestions, including specifying Modeline in xorg.conf and also linking to EDID files I found from those forum posts above. However, I am not sure if the EDID files I found are suitable for my monitor. I think the solution to my problem consist of obtaining the EDID file of my monitor and then fixing it and modifying xorg.conf to force nvidia driver to load the correct resolution. However, I am not sure what steps I need to take to do this. Here is the part of sudo xrandr --prop output that is related to this monitor: DP-1 connected 800x600+1920+0 (normal left inverted right x axis y axis) 0mm x 0mm SignalFormat: DisplayPort supported: DisplayPort ConnectorType: DisplayPort ConnectorNumber: 3 (0x00000003) _ConnectorLocation: 3 (0x00000003) 800x600 60.3*+ I was expecting to see the EDID file in this output as was mentioned in this post, but it is not there. After several hours of tweaking X configurations, I decided it was time to ask for help here. I would really appreciate if someone with experience regarding EDID and X configuration could give me a hand to solve this issue.

SOA, Empowerment and Continuous Improvement

It was a lively, open and positive discussion of pace layered architectures and Oracle’s AppAdvantage approach to a unified view of Applications and Middleware. Rick Hassman from Pella was one of the customer panelists and during the pre event prep, Rick and I shared backgrounds and found that we had both been plant managers and led ERP deployments prior to leading IT itself. During the panel conversation I explored this with him, discussing the unique perspectives that this provides to CIO’s. He then hit on a point that I wasn’t able to fully appreciate until a week later. First though, some background. The week after the Forum, one of the participants emailed me with the following thoughts: “I am 150% behind this concept……but we are struggling with the concept of web services and the potential use of the Oracle Service Bus technology let alone moving into using the full SOA/BPM/BAM software to extend our JD Edwards application to both integrate and support business processes”. After thinking a bit I responded this way: While I certainly appreciate the degree of change and effort involved, perhaps I could offer the following: One of the underlying principles behind Oracle AppAdvantage is that more often than not, the choice between changing a business process and invasively customizing ERP represents a Hobson's Choice: neither is acceptable. In this case the third option, moving the process out of ERP, is the only acceptable one. Providing this choice typically requires end to end, real time interoperability across applications and/or services. This real time interoperability, to be sustainable over time requires a service oriented architecture. There's just no way around this. SOA adaptation is admittedly tough at the beginning. New skills, new technology and new headaches. But, like any radically new technology, it has a learning curve that drives cost down rather dramatically over time. Tough choices to be sure, but not entirely different than we face with every major technology cycle. Good points of course, but I felt that something was missing. The points were convincing, perhaps even a bit insightful, but they didn’t get at the heart of what Oracle AppAdvantage is focused upon: how the optimization of technology, applications, processes and relationships can change the very way that organizations operate. And then I thought back to the panel discussion with Rick Hassman at Oracle OpenWorld. Rick stressed that Continuous Improvement is a fundamental business strategy at Pella. I remember Continuous Improvement well as I suspect does everyone who was in American manufacturing during the 80’s. Pioneered by W. Edwards Deming in Japan (and still known alternatively as Kaizen), Continuous Improvement sets in place the business culture that we must not become complacent with success and resistant to the ongoing need for change. Many believe that this single handedly drove the renaissance in American manufacturing through the last two decades, which had become complacent during the 70’s and early 80’s. But what exactly does this have to do with SOA? It was Rick’s next point. He drew the connection that moving those business processes that need to continually change over time out of ERP and into edge applications and services enables continuous improvement by empowering people to continually strive for better ways of doing things rather than be being bound by workflows that cannot change. A compelling connection: that SOA, and the overall Oracle AppAdvantage framework of which it is an integral part, can empower people towards continuous improvement in business processes and as a result drive business leadership and business excellence. What better a case for technology innovation?

How to set conditional activation to taskflows?

This article describes implementing conditional activation to taskflows.Use Case Description Suppose we have a taskflow dropped as region on a page & this region is enclosed in a popup .By default when the page is loaded the respective region also gets loaded.Hence a region model needs to provide a viewId whenever one is requested. A consequence of this is the TaskFlowRegionModel always has to initialize its task flow and execute the task flow's default activity in order to determine a viewId, even if the region is not visible on the page.This can lead to unnecessary performance overhead of executing task flow to generate viewIds for regions that are never visible. Web application / Domain model integration using JSON capable DTOs [on hold]

I'm a bit confused about architectural choices for the web-applications/java/python world. For c/c++ world the available (open source) choices to implement web applications is pretty limited to zero, involving java or python the choices explode to a,- hard to sort out -, mess of available 'frameworks' and application approaches. I want to sort out a clean MVC model, where the M stands for a fully blown (POCO, POJO driven) domain model (according M.Fowler's EAA pattern) using a mature OO language (Java,C++) for implementation. The background is: I have a system with certain hardware components (that introduce system immanent active behavior) and a configuration database for system meta and HW-components configuration data (these are even usually self contained, since the HW-components are capable to persist their configuration data anyway). For realization of the configuration/status data exchange protocol with the HW-components we have chosen the Google Protobuf format, which works well for the directly wired communication with these components. This protocol is already used successfully with a Java based GUI application via TCP/IP connection to the main system controlling HW-component. This application has some drawbacks and design flaws for historical reasons. Now we want to develop an abstract model (domain model) for configuration and monitoring those HW-components, that represents a more use case oriented view to the overall system behavior. I have the feeling that a plain Java class model would fit best for this (c++ implementation seems to have too much implementation/integration overhead with viable language-bridge interfaces). Google Protobuf message definitions could still serve well to describe DTO objects used to interact with a domain model API. But integrating Google Protobuf messages client side for e.g. data binding in the current view doesn't seem to be a good choice. I'm thinking about some extra serialization features, e.g. for JSON based data exchange with the views/controllers. Most lightweight solutions seem to involve a python based presentation layer using JSON based data transfer (I'm at least not sure to be fully informed about this). Is there some lightweight (applicable for a limited ARM Linux platform) framework available, supporting such architecture to realize a web-application? UPDATE: According to my recent research and comments of colleagues I've noticed that using Java (and some JVM) might not be the preferable choice for integration with python on a limited linux system as we have (running on ARM9 with hard to discuss memory and MCU costs), but C/C++ modules would do well for this (since this forms the native interface to python extensions, doesn't it?). I can imagine to provide a domain model from an appropriate C/C++ API (though I still think it's more efforts and higher skill requirements for the involved developers to do with these languages). Still I'm searching for a good approach that supports such architecture. I'll appreciate any pointers!

SQL SERVER – LOGBUFFER – Wait Type – Day 18 of 28

At first, I was not planning to write about this wait type. The reason was simple- I have faced this only once in my lifetime so far maybe because it is one of the top 5 wait types. I am not sure if it is a common wait type or not, but in the samples I had it really looks rare to me. From Book On-Line: LOGBUFFER Occurs when a task is waiting for space in the log buffer to store a log record. Consistently high values may indicate that the log devices cannot keep up with the amount of log being generated by the server. LOGBUFFER Explanation: The book online definition of the LOGBUFFER seems to be very accurate. On the system where I faced this wait type, the log file (LDF) was put on the local disk, and the data files (MDF, NDF) were put on SanDrives. My client then was not familiar about how the file distribution was supposed to be. Once we moved the LDF to a faster drive, this wait type disappeared. Reducing LOGBUFFER wait: There are several suggestions to reduce this wait stats: Move Transaction Log to Separate Disk from mdf and other files. (Make sure your drive where your LDF is has no IO bottleneck issues). Avoid cursor-like coding methodology and frequent commit statements. Find the most-active file based on IO stall time, as shown in the script written over here. You can also use fn_virtualfilestats to find IO-related issues using the script mentioned over here. Check the IO-related counters (PhysicalDisk:Avg.Disk Queue Length, PhysicalDisk:Disk Read Bytes/sec and PhysicalDisk :Disk Write Bytes/sec) for additional details. Read about them over here. If you have noticed, my suggestions for reducing the LOGBUFFER is very similar to WRITELOG. Although the procedures on reducing them are alike, I am not suggesting that LOGBUFFER and WRITELOG are same wait types. From the definition of the two, you will find their difference. However, they are both related to LOG and both of them can severely degrade the performance. Note: The information presented here is from my experience and there is no way that I claim it to be accurate. I suggest reading Book OnLine for further clarification. All the discussion of Wait Stats in this blog is generic and varies from system to system. It is recommended that you test this on a development server before implementing it to a production server. Add Global Hotkeys to Windows Media Player

Do you use Windows Media Player in the background while working in other applications? The WMP Keys plug-in for Media Player adds global keyboard shortcuts that allow you to control Media Player even when it isn’t in focus. Windows Media Player has a slew of keyboard shortcuts that work only when the media player is active, but these shortcuts stop working once WMP is no longer in focus or minimized. WMP Keys add the following default global hotkeys for Windows Media Player 10, 11, and 12. Ctrl+Alt+Home – Play / Pause Ctrl+Alt+Right – Next track Ctrl+Alt+Left – Previous track Ctrl+Alt+Up Arrow Key – Volume Up Ctrl+Alt+Down Arrow Key – Volume Down Ctrl+Alt+F – Fast Forward Ctrl+Alt+B – Fast Backward Ctrl+Alt+[1-5] – Rate 1-5 stars Note: Tapping Ctrl+Alt+F and Ctrl+Alt+B will skip ahead or back in 5 second intervals. Close out of Windows Media Player and then download and install WMP Keys (link below). After you’ve installed WMP Keys, you’ll need to enable it. Select Organize and then Options… In the Options window, select the Plug-ins tab, click Background in the Category window, then check the box for Wmpkeys Plugin. Click OK to save and exit. You can also enable the plug-in by selecting Tools > Plug-ins and clicking Wmpkeys Plugin. You to view and edit the global hotkeys in the WMPKeys settings window. Select Tools > Plug-in properties and click Wmpkeys Plugin. Below you can see all the default WMP Keys shortcuts. To change any of the shortcuts, select the text box then press the new keyboard shortcut. Click OK when finished. NoSQL is not about object databases

NoSQL as a movement is an interesting beast. I kinda like that it’s negatively defined (I happen to belong myself to at least one other such a-community). It’s not in its roots about proposing one specific new silver bullet to kill an old problem. it’s about challenging the consensus. Actually, blindly and systematically replacing relational databases with object databases would just replace one set of issues with another. No, the point is to recognize that relational databases are not a universal answer -although they have been used as one for so long- and recognize instead that there’s a whole spectrum of data storage solutions out there. Why is it so hard to recognize, by the way? You are already using some of those other data storage solutions every day. Let me cite a few: The file system Active Directory XML / JSON documents The Web e-mail Logs Excel files EXIF blobs in your photos Relational databases And yes, object databases It’s just a fact of modern life. Notice by the way that most of the data that you use every day is unstructured and thus mostly unsuitable for relational storage. It really is more a matter of recognizing it: you are already doing NoSQL. So what happens when for any reason you need to simultaneously query two or more of these heterogeneous data stores? Well, you build an index of sorts combining them, and that’s what you query instead. Of course, there’s not much distance to travel from that to realizing that querying is better done when completely separated from storage. So why am I writing about this today? Well, that’s something I’ve been giving lots of thought, on and off, over the last ten years. When I built my first CMS all that time ago, one of the main problems my customers were facing was to manage and make sense of the mountain of unstructured data that was constituting most of their business. The central entity of that system was the file system because we were dealing with lots of Word documents, PDFs, OCR’d articles, photos and static web pages. We could have stored all that in SQL Server. It would have worked. Ew. I’m so glad we didn’t. Today, I’m working on Orchard (another CMS ;). It’s a pretty young project but already one of the questions we get the most is how to integrate existing data. One of the ideas I’ll be trying hard to sell to the rest of the team in the next few months is to completely split the querying from the storage. Not only does this provide great opportunities for performance optimizations, it gives you homogeneous access to heterogeneous and existing data sources. For free.

How to export ECC key and Cert from NSS DB and import into JKS keystore and Oracle Wallet In this blog I will write about how to extract a cert and key from NSS Db and import it to a JKS Keystore and then import that JKS Keystore into Oracle Wallet. 1. Set Java Home I pointed it to JRE 1.6.0_22 $ export JAVA_HOME=/usr/java/jre1.6.0_22/ 2. Create a self signed ECC cert in NSS DB I created NSS DB with self signed ECC certificate. If you already have NSS Db with ECC cert (and key) skip this step. $export NSS_DIR=/export/home/nss/ $$NSS_DIR/certutil -N -d . $$NSS_DIR/certutil -S -x -s "CN=test,C=US" -t "C,C,C" -n ecc-cert -k ec -q nistp192 -d . 3. Export ECC cert and key using pk12util Use NSS tool pk12util to export this cert and key into a p12 file $$NSS_DIR/pk12util -o ecc-cert.p12 -n ecc-cert -d . -W password 4. Use keytool to create JKS keystore and import this p12 file 4.1 Import p12 file created above into a JKS keystore $JAVA_HOME/bin/keytool -importkeystore -srckeystore ecc-cert.p12 -srcstoretype PKCS12 -deststoretype JKS -destkeystore ecc.jks -srcstorepass password -deststorepass password -srcalias ecc-cert -destalias ecc-cert -srckeypass password -destkeypass password -v But if an error as shown is encountered, keytool error: java.security.UnrecoverableKeyException: Get Key failed: EC KeyFactory not available java.security.UnrecoverableKeyException: Get Key failed: EC KeyFactory not available at com.sun.net.ssl.internal.pkcs12.PKCS12KeyStore.engineGetKey(Unknown Source) at java.security.KeyStoreSpi.engineGetEntry(Unknown Source) at java.security.KeyStore.getEntry(Unknown Source) at sun.security.tools.KeyTool.recoverEntry(Unknown Source) at sun.security.tools.KeyTool.doImportKeyStoreSingle(Unknown Source) at sun.security.tools.KeyTool.doImportKeyStore(Unknown Source) at sun.security.tools.KeyTool.doCommands(Unknown Source) at sun.security.tools.KeyTool.run(Unknown Source) at sun.security.tools.KeyTool.main(Unknown Source) Caused by: java.security.NoSuchAlgorithmException: EC KeyFactory not available at java.security.KeyFactory.<init>(Unknown Source) at java.security.KeyFactory.getInstance(Unknown Source) ... 9 more 4.2 Create a new PKCS11 provider If you didn't get an error as shown above skip this step. Since we already have NSS libraries built with ECC, we can create a new PKCS11 provider Create ${java.home}/jre/lib/security/nss.cfg as follows: name = NSS nssLibraryDirectory = ${nsslibdir} nssDbMode = noDb attributes = compatibility where nsslibdir should contain NSS libs with ECC support. Add the following line to ${java.home}/jre/lib/security/java.security : security.provider.9=sun.security.pkcs11.SunPKCS11 ${java.home}/lib/security/nss.cfg Note that those who are using Oracle iPlanet Web Server or Oracle Traffic Director, NSS libs built with ECC are in <ws_install_dir>/lib or <otd_install_dir>/lib. 4.3. Now keytool should work Now you can try the same keytool command and see that it succeeds : $JAVA_HOME/bin/keytool -importkeystore -srckeystore ecc-cert.p12 -srcstoretype PKCS12 -deststoretype JKS -destkeystore ecc.jks -srcstorepass password -deststorepass password -srcalias ecc-cert -destalias ecc-cert -srckeypass password -destkeypass password -v [Storing ecc.jks] 5. Convert JKS keystore into an Oracle Wallet You can export this cert and key from JKS keystore and import it into an Oracle Wallet if you need using orapki tool as shown below. Make sure that orapki you use supports ECC. Also for ECC you MUST use "-jsafe" option. $ orapki wallet create -pwd password -wallet . -jsafe $ orapki wallet jks_to_pkcs12 -wallet . -pwd password -keystore ecc.jks -jkspwd password -jsafe AS $orapki wallet display -wallet . -pwd welcome1 -jsafeOracle PKI Tool : Version 11.1.2.0.0Copyright (c) 2004, 2012, Oracle and/or its affiliates. Add Artistic Effects to Your Pictures in Office 2010

Do you ever wish you could add cool effects to images in your Office document pictures, but don’t have access to a graphics editor? Today we take a look at the Artistic Effects featire which is a new feature in Office 2010. Note: We will show you examples in Excel, but the Artistic Effect are available in Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. To insert a picture into your Office document, click the Picture button on the Insert tab. Once you import your picture, the Picture Tools format ribbon should be active. If not, click on the image. In the Adjust group, click on Artistic Effects. You will see a selection of effects previews images in the dropdown list. Hover your cursor over the effects to use Live Preview to see what your picture will look like if that effect is applied. When you find an effect you like, just click to apply it to the image. There are also some additional Artistic Effect Options. Each effect will have a it’s own set of available options that can be adjusted by moving the sliders left or right. If you find you want to undo an effect after it has been applied, simply select the None option from the previews under Artistic Effects. Exitus Acta Probat: The Post-Processing Module

Sometimes, one has to make certain ethical compromises to ensure the success of a corporate IT project. Exitus Acta Probat (literally 'the result validates the deeds' meaning that the ends justify the means)It was a while back, whilst working as a Technical Architect for a well-known international company, that I was given the task of designing the architecture of a rather specialized accounting system. We'd tried an off-the-shelf (OTS) Windows-based solution which crashed with dispiriting regularity, and didn't quite do what the business required. After a great deal of research and planning, we commissioned a Unux-based system that used X-terminals for the desktops of the participating staff. X terminals are now obsolete, but were then hot stuff; stripped-down Unix workstations that provided client GUIs for networked applications long before the days of AJAX, Flash, Air and DHTML. I've never known a project go so smoothly: I'd been initially rather nervous about going the Unix route, believing then that Unix programmers were excitable creatures who were prone to indulge in role-play enactments of elves and wizards at the weekend, but the programmers I met from the company that did the work seemed to be rather donnish, earnest, people who quickly grasped our requirements and were faultlessly professional in their work.After thinking lofty thoughts for a while, there was considerable pummeling of keyboards by our suppliers, and a beautiful robust application was delivered to us ahead of dates.Soon, the department who had commissioned the work received shiny new X Terminals to replace their rather depressing lavatory-beige PCs. I modestly hung around as the application was commissioned and deployed to the department in order to receive the plaudits. They didn't come. Something was very wrong with the project. I couldn't put my finger on the problem, and the users weren't doing any more than desperately and futilely searching the application to find a fault with it.Many times in my life, I've come up against a predicament like this: The roll-out of an application goes wrong and you are hearing nothing that helps you to discern the cause but nit-*** noise. There is a limit to the emotional heat you can pack into a complaint about text being in the wrong font, or an input form being slightly cramped, but they tried their best. The answer is, of course, one that every IT executive should have tattooed prominently where they can read it in emergencies: In Vino Veritas (literally, 'in wine the truth', alcohol loosens the tongue. A roman proverb) It was time to slap the wallet and get the department down the pub with the tab in my name. It was an eye-watering investment, but hedged with an over-confident IT director who relished my discomfort. To cut a long story short, The real reason gushed out with the third round. We had deprived them of their PCs, which had been good for very little from the pure business perspective, but had provided them with many hours of happiness playing computer-based minesweeper and solitaire. There is no more agreeable way of passing away the interminable hours of wage-slavery than minesweeper or solitaire, and the employees had applauded the munificence of their employer who had provided them with the means to play it. I had, unthinkingly, deprived them of it.I held an emergency meeting with our suppliers the following day. I came over big with the notion that it was in their interests to provide a solution. They played it cool, probably knowing that it was my head on the block, not theirs. In the end, they came up with a compromise. they would temporarily descend from their lofty, cerebral stamping grounds in order to write a server-based Minesweeper and Solitaire game for X Terminals, and install it in a concealed place within the system. We'd have to pay for it, though. I groaned. How could we do that? "Could we call it a 'post-processing module?" suggested their account executive.And so it came to pass. The application was a resounding success. Every now and then, the staff were able to indulge in some 'post-processing', with what turned out to be a very fine implementation of both minesweeper and solitaire. There were several refinements: A single click in a 'boss' button turned the games into what looked just like a financial spreadsheet. They even threw in a multi-user version of Battleships. The extra payment for the post-processing module went through the change-control process without anyone untoward noticing, and peace once more descended. Only one thing niggles. Those games were good. Do they still survive, somewhere in a Linux library? If so, I'd like to claim a small part in their production.

Today I passed Microsoft exam 70-541: Microsoft Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 - Application Development. This exam gives you MCTS certificate. In this posting I will talk about the exam and also give some suggestions about books to read when preparing for exam. About exam This exam was good one I think. The questions were not hard and also not too easy. Just enough to make sure you really know what you do when working with SharePoint. Or at least to make sure you how things work. After couple of years active SharePoint coding this exam needs no additional preparation. The questions covered very different topics like alerts, features, web parts, site definitions, event receivers, workflows, web services and deployments. There are 59 questions in the exam (this information is available in internet) and you have time a little bit more than two hours. It took me about 40 minutes to get questions answered and reviewed. I strongly suggest you to study the parts of WSS 3.0 you don’t know yet and write some code to find out how to use these things through SharePoint API. Good reading For guys with less experience there are some good books to suggest. Take one or both of these books because there are no official study materials or training kits available for this exam. One of my colleagues who is less experienced than me suggested Inside Microsoft Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 by Ted Pattison and Daniel Larson. He told me that he found this book most useful for him to pass this exam. When I started with SharePoint Services 3.0 my first book was Developer’s Guide To The Windows SharePoint Services v3 Platform by Todd C. Bleeker. It helped me getting started and later it was my main handbook for some time. Of course, there are many other good books and I suggest you to take what you find. Of course, before buying something I suggest you to discuss with guys who have read the book before. And make sure you mention that you are preparing for exam. Conclusion If you are experienced SharePoint developer then this exam needs no preparation. Okay, some preparation is always good but if you don’t have time you are still able to pass this exam. If you are not experienced SharePoint developer then study before taking this exam – it is not easy stuff for novices. But if you pass this exam you can proudly say – yes, I know something about SharePoint! :)

The proposal was for a dedicated caching layer which all app servers and service providers can hook into, sharing resources and common data. The architecture might end up like this: I'll update this post with a link to the slide deck once it's available. The next session will have Udi Dahan walking through nServiceBus, register on EventBrite if you want to come along. Synopsis Looked at the benefits and drawbacks of app-centric isolated caches, compared to an enterprise-wide shared cache running on dedicated nodes; Suggested issues and risks around caching including staleness of data, resource usage, performance and testing; Walked through a generic service cache implemented as a WCF behaviour – suitable for IIS- or BizTalk-hosted services - which I'll be releasing on CodePlex shortly; Listed common options for cache providers and their offerings. Discussion Cache usage. Different value propositions for utilising the cache: improved performance, isolation from underlying systems (e.g. service output caching can have a TTL large enough to cover downtime), reduced resource impact – CPU, memory, SQL and cost (e.g. caching results of paid-for services). Dedicated cache nodes. Preferred over in-host caching provided latency is acceptable. Depending on cache provider, can offer easy scalability and global replication so cache clients always use local nodes. Restriction of AppFabric Caching to Windows Server 2008 not viewed as a concern. Security. Limited security model in most cache providers. Options for securing cache content suggested as custom implementations. Obfuscating keys and serialized values may mean additional security is not needed. Depending on security requirements and architecture, can ensure cache servers only accessible to cache clients via IPsec. Staleness. Generally thought to be an overrated problem. Thinking in line with eventual consistency, that serving up stale data may not be a significant issue. Good technical arguments support this, although I suspect business users will be harder to persuade. Providers. Positive feedback for AppFabric Caching – speed, configurability and richness of the distributed model making it a good enterprise choice. .NET port of memcached well thought of for performance but lack of replication makes it less suitable for these shared scenarios. Replicated fork – repcached – untried and less active than memcached. NCache also well thought of, but Express version too limited for enterprise scenarios, and commercial versions look costly compared to AppFabric.

To me, this simple and elegant quote from the great English author Samuel Johnson is a reflection of Oracle's knowledge base strategy. The knowledge base in the My Oracle Support portal (https://support.oracle.com) hosts nearly a half million documents, including how-to instructions, problem-solution descriptions, code samples, FAQs, critical alerts, technical whitepapers, and so on. AutoVue's footprint in the Oracle knowledge base - although relatively small at just around 400 documents - is a steadily-expanding assortment of valuable info. This information is designed to complement what you have already learned from the AutoVue documentation, or in some cases, to examine topics not yet covered in the documentation. Similar to the documentation, the knowledge base is one of the highest-value self-service avenues, since it delivers answers in real-time and is driven by the topics most relevant to customers. There are many different ways to leverage the AutoVue knowledge content, or what Oracle often refers to as "KM Notes": 1. Knowledge Browser: To browse the knowledge hierarchy, click on the 'Knowledge' tab at the top of the My Oracle Support webpage. In the list of product areas at the left, click on 'More Applications', then on 'Oracle AutoVue'. From here, you can either view the full set of KM Notes under the AutoVue product family (AutoVue, VueLink, Web Services, Document Print Services, etc) by clicking on 'All of Oracle AutoVue', or you can drill down further by clicking on 'Enterprise Visualization'. 2. Then, click on the pencil icon at the top-right of the widget to customize it by product. This allows you to keep an active monitor on the most recently updated KM Notes across any product: 5. Oracle’s Sun Server X4-8 with Built-in Elastic Computing

We are excited to announce the release of Oracle's new 8-socket server, Sun Server X4-8. It’s the most flexible 8-socket x86 server Oracle has ever designed, and also the most powerful. Not only does it use the fastest Intel® Xeon® E7 v2 processors, but also its memory, I/O and storage subsystems are all designed for maximum performance and throughput. Like its predecessor, the Sun Server X4-8 uses a “glueless” design that allows for maximum performance for Oracle Database, while also reducing power consumption and improving reliability. The specs are pretty impressive. Sun Server X4-8 supports 120 cores (or 240 threads), 6 TB memory, 9.6 TB HDD capacity or 3.2 TB SSD capacity, contains 16 PCIe Gen 3 I/O expansion slots, and allows for up to 6.4 TB Sun Flash Accelerator F80 PCIe Cards. The Sun Server X4-8 is also the most dense x86 server with its 5U chassis, allowing 60% higher rack-level core and DIMM slot density than the competition. There has been a lot of innovation in Oracle’s x86 product line, but the latest and most significant is a capability called elastic computing. This new capability is built into each Sun Server X4-8. Elastic computing starts with the Intel processor. While Intel provides a wide range of processors each with a fixed combination of core count, operational frequency, and power consumption, customers have been forced to make tradeoffs when they select a particular processor. They have had to make educated guesses on which particular processor (core count/frequency/cache size) will be best suited for the workload they intend to execute on the server.Oracle and Intel worked jointly to define a new processor, the Intel Xeon E7-8895 v2 for the Sun Server X4-8, that has unique characteristics and effectively combines the capabilities of three different Xeon processors into a single processor. Oracle system design engineers worked closely with Oracle’s operating system development teams to achieve the ability to vary the core count and operating frequency of the Xeon E7-8895 v2 processor with time without the need for a system level reboot. Along with the new processor, enhancements have been made to the system BIOS, Oracle Solaris, and Oracle Linux, which allow the processors in the system to dynamically clock up to faster speeds as cores are disabled and to reach higher maximum turbo frequencies for the remaining active cores. What is hogging my connection?

At times it seems like dozens, if not hundreds of root-owned HTTP connections spring up. This is not much of a problem on LAN or WLAN as each of them seems to transfer very little, but if I use GPRS link, my ping times go into minutes (seriously, 80000ms is not infrequent!) and all connections grind to a halt waiting till these end. This usually lasts some 15 minutes and ends about when I start troubleshooting it for real. Oracle Social Network Developer Challenge Winners

Maybe you recall that Noel (@noelportugal) and I were running a modified hackathon during the show, the Oracle Social Network Developer Challenge. Without further ado, congratulations to Dimitri Gielis (@dgielis) and Martin Giffy D’Souza (@martindsouza) on their winning entry, an integration between Oracle APEX and Oracle Social Network that integrates feedback and bug submission with Oracle Social Network Conversations, allowing developers, end-users and project leaders to view and discuss the feedback on their APEX applications from within Oracle Social Network. Update: Bob Rhubart of OTN (@brhubart) interviewed Dimitri and Martin right after their big win. Money quote from Dimitri when asked what he’d buy with the $500 in Amazon gift cards, “Oracle Social Network.” Nice one. In their own words: In the developers perspective it’s important to get feedback soon, so after a first iteration and end-users start to test, they can give feedback of the application. Previously it stopped there, and it was up to the developer to communicate further with email, phone etc. With OSN every feedback and communication gets logged and other people can see the discussion immediately as well. For the end users perspective he can now communicate in a more efficient way to not only the developers, but also between themselves. Maybe many end-users (in different locations) would like to change some behaviour, by using OSN they can see the entry somebody put in with a screenshot and they can just start to chat about it. Some key technical end users can have lighten the tasks of the development team by looking at the feedback first and start to communicate with their peers. For the project manager he has now the ability to really see what communication has taken place in certain areas and can make decisions on that. Later, if things come up again, he can always go back in OSN and see what was said at that moment in time. Integrating OSN in the APEX applications enhances the user experience, makes the lives of the developers easier and gives a better overview to project managers. Incidentally, you may already know Dimitri and Martin, since both are Oracle Ace Directors. I ran into Martin at the Ace Director briefings Friday before the conference started, and at that point, he wasn’t sure he’d have time to enter the Challenge. After some coaxing, he and Dimitri agreed to give it a go and banged out their entry on Tuesday night, or more accurately, very early Wednesday morning, the day of the Challenge judging. I think they said it took them about four hours of hardcore coding to get it done, very much like a traditional hackathon, which is essentially a code sprint from idea to finished product. I’ll be posting the details of their work this week. The one guy who finished an entry, but couldn’t make the judging, Bex Huff (@bex). Bex rallied from a hospitalization due to an allergic reaction during the show; he’s fine, don’t worry. I’ll post details of his work next week, too.
