• Connect 2 ubuntu computers into a LAN

• Ubuntu karmic doesn't have the version file?

  I was following this tutorial: http://articles.slicehost.com/2010/4/23/ubuntu-karmic-setup-part-2 On my ubuntu karmic version (on ec2, ami from elastic) I don't see this file: cat /etc/lsb-release It just isn't there. How can I see the version of the O/S? And shouldn't that file be there? Some people have told me ubuntu isn't really used as a server, is that true or is the trend making it more viable?

• Tool for logging NIC link state events.

  Intel NICs have a driver option (in Windows) that will log link state events to the system log, so if the network drops out periodically you can determine that fact. Does anyone know of a simple generic solution that does this, in other words one that is not part of the driver from a particular manufacturer? I know there are plenty of 'big iron' network monitoring tools out there but surely there's something really simple that runs as a service in Windows with minimal setup ? TIA

• XP Missing AD in secuirity location

  I have a few Window XP clients that are part of a domain, when trying to set the permissions on the security tab and pressing location to search the AD for users it only presents the local machine... So I follow this path Right click folder Properties Security Add in the locations field where I would normally see the windows domain, I am only seeing the local machine name??? So only users that have a local account can be added to the folders permissions... Any tips would be appreciated

I have about 930 pictures which are called like: 5210841 Tuinset Senator.jpg 5210898 Traptrede Premium.jpg etc. I'm looking for a way to rename these pictures, without losing the number part. So for the first one, its name would be: 5210841.jpg and the second 5210898.jpg Can you guys think about a program which can do this job? It's for a Windows platform.

  I have a Citrix Web Interface (as part of XenApp 6.0 on Windows Server 2008 R2) that is behind a NAT, I can access the web interface fine (via both SSL and standard port 80) but when I go to launch a application that connection is still being made over the server's internal IP address. How do I configure the web interface to default to the external IP address of the box instead of its internal LAN IP?

• Combine Windows 8 app and settings search?

  While I've adapted to most things in windows 8 quite easily, I miss the 'combined' search feature of win 7 where pressing Win then typing would bring up all of the applications, settings and files (not that I ever really used the files part). Now, if I want to search settings I press win, start typing, then have to press the down arrow twice, then enter, then find the setting I want (I know I could press win-w, but that's just another thing to remember). Is there any way to bring back the 'unified search'?

  I've red this article from howtogeek, but it didn't explain this one which is placed in the target portion when you right click on windows explorer and click properties: %windir%\explorer.exe shell:desktop\Inbox And why does local disk E: shows up when I have this one: %windir%\explorer.exe shell:E:\FINAL SAVE DATA I don't really get the code, especially the part in shell: desktop\Inbox.   Starting around the time I installed the Office 2010 Beta, Whenever I login, Windows tries to open a file named "Bob", coincidentally the first part of my username. Selecting Notepad to open it, and it contains TCP/IP network settings. I've looked for and deleted unrecognized entries in my StartUp folder, in HKLM/.../CurrentVersion/Run and in HKCU/.../CurrentVersion/Run with no luck. Is there any other place I should be looking for errant entries?

• What is a good way to render a site or portions of a site into a desktop gadget/widget?

  I guess a better way to ask this question (or an alternative to it, in my case) would be to first ask how to do this instead. Namely, I want to have a gadget on my desktop (not just in a browser window) with options such as overlaying on top of other windows, offline caching, etc. that is dedicated expressly to a given website (no browsing functions or menus). Be even more awesome if I could indicate a specific physical part of the website to show in the gadget.

• How to remove Reply List option in Thunderbird 3?

  I receive email as part of a mailing list that also CC's other people. T-Bird defaults the toolbar button to Reply List instead of Reply All, which strips away the CC's. That's bad, because they're not on the list. Is there a way I can stop T-Bird from presenting Reply List as an option, or at least make Reply All the default? Thanks!

  I have Microsoft Project Professional 2003 installed (11.2.2005.1801.15, SP2). I have been trying to open a MPP file created in a newer version so need the converter, which is part of SP3. But when I try to install the SP3 package (as downloaded from Microsoft's site) I get an error message box: --------------------------- Project 2003 Service Pack 3 (SP3) --------------------------- The expected version of the product was not found on your system. --------------------------- OK --------------------------- Project (and Office) are licensed and otherwise work correctly. Any advice?

  I'm wondering where to find detailed information regarding the Microsoft Advanced Windows Firewall command line settings. For instance, from reading a couple technet articles I've learned that I can run the following: netsh advfirewall firewall set rule group=”File and Printer Sharing” new enable=Yes The bit about 'group="File and Printer Sharing"' is the part I'm having trouble finding documentation for. • What is the correct PCI-X riser card for the IBM 3650 M2?

  I bought a IBM 3650 M2, and a riser card for that, Part Number 46M1074. This is the PCI-X riser card. Now, my admin team says that the card isn't fitting??
