• How do I make a WiX 3.5 installer with a completely self-contained .NET 4.0 installer?

  Continuing a previous question I asked here, I now need to move to vs2010. I've gotten the most recent weekly build of WiX 3.5, the June 5th 2010 version. Here's the relevant lines from my installer: <ItemGroup> <BootstrapperFile Include="Microsoft.Net.Framework.4.0"> <ProductName>.NET Framework 4.0</ProductName> </BootstrapperFile> <BootstrapperFile Include="Microsoft.Windows.Installer.4.5"> <ProductName>Windows Installer 4.5</ProductName> </BootstrapperFile> </ItemGroup> and <GenerateBootstrapper ApplicationFile="MySetup.msi" ApplicationName="MyProgram" BootstrapperItems="@(BootstrapperFile)" Path="C:\Program Files\Microsoft SDKs\Windows\v7.0A\Bootstrapper\" ComponentsLocation="Relative" OutputPath="$(OutputPath)" Culture="en" /> However, it's just not working. In vs2010, there are exclamation points next to the .NET Framework 4.0 and Windows Installer 4.5 files, and the properties page lists them as 'Unknown BuildAction BootstrapperFile', and the build just does not appear to install .NET 4.0 at all. The relevant warning is: C:\source\depot\project\vs2010\WiXSetup\WiXSetup.wixproj(68,5): warning MSB3155: Item 'Microsoft.Net.Framework.4.0' could not be located in 'C:\Program Files\Microsoft SDKs\Windows\v7.0A\Bootstrapper\'.

• Android ViewFlipper + homescreen animation

  I am trying to use a ViewFlipper and make it act like the home screen(The layout will move with your finger). Check out this for an example. I want to do this with a ViewFlipper that only contains two children so the opposite view should be shown on either side of the current view depending on which way the user moves their finger. This code works but only for 1 direction at a time. This is in onTouchEvent. case MotionEvent.ACTION_MOVE: leftView.setVisibility(View.VISIBLE); rightView.setVisibility(View.VISIBLE); // move the current view to the left or right. currentView.layout((int) (touchEvent.getX() - oldTouchValue), currentView.getTop(), (int) (touchEvent.getX() - oldTouchValue) + 320, currentView.getBottom()); // place this view just left of the currentView leftView.layout(currentView.getLeft() - 320, leftView.getTop(), currentView.getLeft(), leftView.getBottom()); // place this view just right of the currentView rightView.layout(currentView.getRight(), rightView.getTop(), currentView.getRight() + 320, rightView.getBottom()); Which ever of the bottom two lines I put last that direction will work correctly but the other will not. • Impersonation in ASP.NET MVC

  I have an Action that needs to read a file from a secure location, so I have to use impersonation to read the file. But if I replace these 2 lines: var bytes = System.IO.File.ReadAllBytes(path); return File(bytes, "application/octet-stream", "FileName"); with this: return File(path, "application/octet-stream", "FileName"); It does NOT work and I get the error message: Access to the path 'c:\projects\uploads\1\aa2bcbe7-ea99-499d-add8-c1fdac561b0e\Untitled 2.csv' is denied. I guess using the File results with a path, tries to open the file at a later time in the request pipeline when I have already "undone" the impersonation. Remember, the impersonation code works because I can read the file in the bytes array. What I want to do though is stream the file to the client. Any idea how I can work around this?   My website, which was working before, suddenly started breaking with the error "ImproperlyConfigured at / The included urlconf resume.urls doesn't have any patterns in it" The project base is called resume. • Use RegEx in Java to extract parameters in between parentheses

  I'm writing a utility to extract the names of header files from JSPs. I have no problem reading the JSPs line by line and finding the lines I need. I am having a problem extracting the specific text needed using regex. After looking at many similar questions I'm hitting a brick wall. An example of the String I'll be matching from within is: <jsp:include page="<%=Pages.getString(\"MY_HEADER\")%>" flush="true"></jsp:include> All I need is MY_HEADER for this example. Any time I have this tag: <%=Pages.getString I need what comes between this: <%=Pages.getString(\" and this: )%> Here is what I have currently (which is not working, I might add) : String currentLine; while ((currentLine = fileReader.readLine()) != null) { Pattern pattern = Pattern.compile("<%=Pages\\.getString\\(\\\\\"([^\\\\]*)"); Matcher matcher = pattern.matcher(currentLine); while(matcher.find()) { System.out.println(matcher.group(1).toString()); }} I need to be able to use the Java RegEx API and regex to extract those header names. Any help on this issue is greatly appreciated. Thanks! EDIT: Resolved this issue, thankfully. The tricky part was, after being given the right regex, it had to be taken into account that the String I was feeding to the regex was always going to have two " / " characters ( (/"MY_HEADER"/) ) that needed to be escaped in the pattern. • How to use Excel VBA to extract Memo field from Access Database?

  I have an Excel spreadsheet. I am connecting to an Access database via ODBC. Something along then lines of: Set dbEng = CreateObject("DAO.DBEngine.40") Set oWspc = dbEng.CreateWorkspace("ODBCWspc", "", "", dbUseODBC) Set oConn = oWspc.OpenConnection("Connection", , True, "ODBC;DSN=CLIENTDB;") Then I use a query and fetch a result set to get some table data. Set oQuery = oConn.CreateQueryDef("tmpQuery") oQuery.Sql = "SELECT idField, memoField FROM myTable" Set oRs = oQuery.OpenRecordset The problem now arises. My field is a dbMemo because the maximum content length is up to a few hundred chars. It's not that long, and in fact the value I'm reading is only a dozen characters. But Excel just doesn't seem able to handle the Memo field content at all. My code... ActiveCell = oRs.Fields("memoField") ...gives error Run-time error '3146': ODBC--call failed. Any suggestions? Can Excel VBA actually get at memo field data? Or is it just completely impossible. I get exactly the same error from GetChunk as well. ActiveCell = oRs.Fields("memoField").GetChunk(0, 2) ...also gives error Run-time error '3146': ODBC--call failed. Converting to a text field makes everything work fine. However some data is truncated to 255 characters of course, which means that isn't a workable solution.

• Help with entity frame work error. Error 0194: All artifacts loaded....

  This is a c#/asp.net project. The full error message I get is:Error 0194: All artifacts loaded into the item collection must have the same version. Multiple versions were encountered. This project was started as a 3.5 and upgraded to 4.0. When I try to test any of the methods I get the error that I posted in the subject line. I am going to include the actual lines that it throws the exception on. If there is anything in people need to see to try to help let me know and I post it as well. • .htaccess - RewriteRules working, but browser address bar displaying full (unfriendly) URL

  Hey there, Haven't been able to find a solution to this around the net or these forums - apologise if I've missed something! My .htaccess RewriteRules are working well - have search-engine and user -friendly links in my web pages, and unfriendly database URLs running hidden in the background. Except when I added a RewriteRule to add "www." to the front of URLs if the user didn't enter it - to ensure only one appears in search engines. Here's what now happening, and I can't figure out why! My friendly URL structure for content is like this, and the database query string uses the first "importantword": www.example.com/importantword-nonimportantword/ .htaccess snippet: Options +FollowSymLinks Options -Indexes RewriteEngine on RewriteOptions MaxRedirects=10 RewriteBase / RewriteRule ^/$ index.php [L] RewriteRule ^(.*)-(.*)/overview/$ detail.php?categoryID=$1 [L] RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} !^www.example.com$ RewriteRule ^(.*)$ http://www.example.com/$1 [L] What's happening since I added the last 2 lines: CASE 1: user types (or clicks) www.example.com/honda-vehicle/overview/ - Works correctly - They are taken to the correct page and the browser URL bar says: www.example.com/honda-vehicles/overview/ CASE 2: user types example.com - Works correctly - They are taken to www.example.com and the browser URL bar says: www.example.com CASE 3: user types (or clicks) example.com/honda-vehicles/overview/ i.e. without the prefix "www" - Does NOT work correctly - They are taken to the right page, but the browser URL bar displays the unfriendly URL: www.example.com/detail.php?categoryID=honda I figure there's some issue with the order of the RewriteRules, but it's doing my head in trying to logically step through it and figure it out! I'm surprised because again and again I check urls.py and there is no ^polls/randomTest/$ in it, but there is ^polls/randomTest1/' It seems like Django is somehow storing the previous contents of urls.py and I just don't know how to make my latest changes effective. Any ideas? Why do I keep on seeing some old version of regexes when I try to load that page even though I changed my urls.py?

I've tried using something along the lines of: CGContextSetShadowWithColor(context, CGSizeMake(2, 2), 2, [[UIColor grayColor] CGColor]); CGContextFillPath(context); But this only works when the image has transparent areas, if the image isn't transparent at all, it won't even draw a shadow around the border. I'm wondering if there is something I'm doing wrong?

I know this is inefficient and can be done with a couple of lines of code. It seems like there is a way of saying: when this is clicked, hide the rest. • MVP, WinForms - how to avoid bloated view, presenter and presentation model

  When implementing MVP pattern in winforms I often find bloated view interfaces with too many properties, setters and getters. An easy example with be a view with 3 buttons and 7 textboxes, all having value, enabled and visible properties exposed from the view. Adding validation results for this, and you could easily end up with an interface with 40ish properties. Using the Presentation Model, there'll be a model with the same number of properties aswell. How do you easily sync the view and the presentation model without having bloated presenter logic that pass all the values back and forth? (With that 80ish line presenter code, imagine with the presenter test that mocks the model and view will look like..160ish lines of code just to mock that transfer.) Is there any framework to handle this without resorting to winforms databinding? (you might want to use different views than a winforms view. According to some, this sync should be the presenters job..) Would you use AutoMapper? Maybe im asking the wrong questions, but it seems to me MVP easily gets bloated without some good solution here..

  Is there any way to indicate to ReSharper that a null reference won't occur because of Design-by-Contract Requires checking? For example, the following code will raise the warning (Possible 'null' assignment to entity marked with 'NotNull' attribute) in ReSharper on lines 7 and 8: private Dictionary<string, string> _Lookup = new Dictionary<string, string>(); public void Foo(string s) { Contract.Requires(!String.IsNullOrEmpty(s)); if (_Lookup.ContainsKey(s)) _Lookup.Remove(s); } What is really odd is that if you remove the Contract.Requires(...) line, the ReSharper message goes away. Update I found the solution through ExternalAnnotations which was also mentioned by Mike below. Here's an example of how to do it for a function in Microsoft.Contracts: Create a directory called Microsoft.Contracts under the ExternalAnnotations ReSharper directory. Next, Create a file called Microsoft.Contracts.xml and populate like so: <assembly name="Microsoft.Contracts"> <member name="M:System.Diagnostics.Contracts.Contract.Requires(System.Boolean)"> <attribute ctor="M:JetBrains.Annotations.AssertionMethodAttribute.#ctor"/> <parameter name="condition"> <attribute ctor="M:JetBrains.Annotations.AssertionConditionAttribute.#ctor(JetBrains.Annotations.AssertionConditionType)"> <argument>0</argument> </attribute> </parameter> </member> </assembly> Restart Visual Studio, and the message goes away!

  All I want is a command-line tool that can extract files from a merge module (.msm) onto disk. I looked up Orca (version 3.1), whose documentation states: Many merge module options can be specified from the command line... Extracting Files from a Merge Module Orca supports three different methods for extracting files contained in a merge module. Orca can extract the individual CAB file, extract the files into a module tree and extract the files into a source image once it has been merged into a target database... Extracting Files To extract the individual files from a merge module, use the ... -x ... option on the command line, where is the desired path to the new directory tree. The specified path is used as the root path for the extracted files. All files are extracted from the CAB file embedded in the module and placed in the specified path. The directory layout for the extracted files is based on the directory tree of the merge module. It mostly sounds like exactly what I need. But when I try it, orca simply opens up an editor (with info on the msm I specified) and then does nothing. I've tried a variety of command lines: orca -x theDirectory theModule.msm orca theModule.msm -x theDirectory ...and others. I get nowhere. The closest I've gotten was this: orca -q -x theDirectory -m theModule.msm ...but then it complains that I didn't specifiy a database to merge into. But I'm not trying to merge anything, no less into a database. I just want the files extracted. Can someone explain what I'm doing wrong with the command line options?

• R and version control for the solo data analyst

  Many data analysts that I respect use version control. A brief overview: I'm a social scientist who uses R to analyse data for research publications. I don't currently produce R packages. My R code for a project typically includes a few thousand lines of code for data input, cleaning, manipulation, analyses, and output generation. Publications are typically written using LaTeX. With regards to version control there are many benefits which I have read about, yet they seem to be less relevant to the solo data analyst. Backup: I have a backup system already in place. Forking and rewinding: I've never felt the need to do this, but I can see how it could be useful (e.g., you are preparing multiple journal articles based on the same dataset; you are preparing a report that is updated monthly, etc) Collaboration: Most of the time I am analysing data myself, thus, I woudln't get the collaboration benefits of version control. There are also several potential costs involved with adopting version control: Time to evaluate and learn a version control system A possible increase in complexity over my current file management system However, I still have the feeling that I'm missing something. General guides on version control seem to be addressed more towards computer scientists than data analysts. Thus, specifically in relation to data analysts in circumstances similar to those listed above: Is version control worth the effort? What are the main pros and cons of adopting version control? What is a good strategy for getting started with version control for data analysis with R (e.g., examples, workflow ideas, software, links to guides)?

  Hi I have this matrix A, representing similarities of pixel intensities of an image. For example: Consider a 10 x 10 image. Matrix A in this case would be of dimension 100 x 100, and element A(i,j) would have a value in the range 0 to 1, representing the similarity of pixel i to j in terms of intensity. I am using OpenCV for image processing and the development environment is C on Linux. Objective is to compute the Eigenvectors of matrix A and I have used the following approach: static CvMat mat, *eigenVec, *eigenVal; static double A[100][100]={}, Ain1D[10000]={}; int cnt=0; //Converting matrix A into a one dimensional array //Reason: That is how cvMat requires it for(i = 0;i < affnDim;i++){ for(j = 0;j < affnDim;j++){ Ain1D[cnt++] = A[i][j]; } } mat = cvMat(100, 100, CV_32FC1, Ain1D); cvEigenVV(&mat, eigenVec, eigenVal, 1e-300); for(i=0;i < 100;i++){ val1 = cvmGet(eigenVal,i,0); //Fetching Eigen Value for(j=0;j < 100;j++){ matX[i][j] = cvmGet(eigenVec,i,j); //Fetching each component of Eigenvector i } } Problem: After execution I get nearly all components of all the Eigenvectors to be zero. I tried different images and also tried populating A with random values between 0 and 1, but the same result. Few of the top eigenvalues returned look like the following: 9805401476911479666115491135488.000000 -9805401476911479666115491135488.000000 -89222871725331592641813413888.000000 89222862280598626902522986496.000000 5255391142666987110400.000000 I am now thinking on the lines of using cvSVD() which performs singular value decomposition of real floating-point matrix and might yield me the eigenvectors. But before that I thought of asking it here. Is there anything absurd in my current approach? Am I using the right API i.e. cvEigenVV() for the right input matrix (my matrix A is a floating point matrix)? cheers

• Getting Response from TIdHttp with Error Code 400

  I have been writing a Delphi library for StackApps API. I have run into a problem with Indy. I am using the version that ships with Delphi 2010. If you pass invalid parameters to one of the StackApps API it will return a HTTP Error Code 400 and then in the response it will contain a JSON object with more details. By visiting http://api.stackoverflow.com/0.8/stats/?Key=BadOnPurpose in Chrome Browser you can see an Example. I.E. and Firefox hide the JSON. • Recommendations on developing a WPF application without using MVVM or similar

  We were building out the next version of an in-house thick-client application using WPF/Prism (Composite Application Library). As we were nearly done with the client our team was put under new management and shortly thereafter: We were then directed to drop the Prism framework to keep things simple. This includes not using any type of Inversion of Control. We were directed to build out the WPF application without using MVVM or similar; and more along the lines of a traditional WinForm application. The idea is that if a developer sees a control in Visual Studio’s designer view, then (s)he should be able to click on the control and see exactly what it's doing without having to traverse through a view-model (or similar). We have now been tasked with building out the WPF application using one primary Window, use a Frame Control to contain the content, and use a Ribbon outside of the frame for the menu items. Reason we were provided to use Frame Control: a. We will show a view in the Frame with a Page (not a user control) and then load the page in the Frame. b. When a new view is to be shown in the Frame, the current view (Page) will be closed/disposed and the new view (Page) will take its place in the Frame. c. When a developer looks at the Page in design view, (s)he will be able to click on any control and see exactly what is being done. Given the restrictions of 1 and 2 above, we’d like to present another method of building out the application that: Can be presented as an alternative to using the “Frame Methodology” (item 3 above) but still provides the same type of functionality. Does not use MVVM (see #1 and #2 above). Provided the direction we’ve been given, any suggestions as to an alternative we can present? • WCF Named Pipe IPC

  I have been trying to get up to speed on Named Pipes this week. The task I am trying to solve with them is that I have an existing windows service that is acting as a device driver that funnels data from an external device into a database. Now I have to modify this service and add an optional user front end (on the same machine, using a form of IPC) that can monitor the data as it passes between the device and the DB as well as send some commands back to the service. My initial ideas for the IPC were either named pipes or memory mapped files. So far I have been working through the named pipe idea using WCF Tutorial Basic Interprocess Communication . My idea is to set the Windows service up with an additional thread that implements the WCF NamedPipe Service and use that as a conduit to the internals of my driver. I have the sample code working, however I can not get my head around 2 issues that I am hoping that someone here can help me with: In the tutorial the ServiceHost is instantiated with a typeof(StringReverser) rather than by referencing a concrete class. Thus there seems to be no mechanism for the Server to interact with the service itself (between the host.Open() and host.Close() lines). Is it possible to create a link between and pass information between the server and the class that actually implements the service? If so, how? If I run a single instance of the server and then run multiple instance of the clients, it seems that each client gets a separate instance of the service class. I tried adding some state information to the class implementing the service and it was only retained within the instance of the named pipe. This is possibly related to the first question, but is there anyway to force the named pipes to use the same instance of the class that is implementing the service? Finally, any thoughts on MMF vs Named Pipes? Thanks for you help

• How do I convert some ugly inline javascript into a function?

  I've got a form with various inputs that by default have no value. When a user changes one or more of the inputs all values including the blank ones are used in the URL GET string when submitted. So to clean it up I've got some javascript that removes the inputs before submission. It works well enough but I was wondering how to put this in a js function or tidy it up. Seems a bit messy to have it all clumped in to an onclick. Plus i'm going to be adding more so there will be quite a few. Here's the relevant code. There are 3 seperate lines for 3 seperate inputs. The first part of the line has a value that refers to the inputs ID ("mf","cf","bf","pf") and the second part of the line refers to the parent div ("dmf","dcf", etc). • Compiling a program with a legacy version of gcc

  This is probably a very difficult problem to troubleshoot with the information I can practically provide, but I'm hoping someone might be able to at least point me in a possible direction. I'm trying to install HTK (http://htk.eng.cam.ac.uk/), which, according to this page needs to be installed using gcc 3.4. Their method of implementing backwards compatibility: #yum install compat-gcc-34-c++ compat-gcc-34 won't work for me as I'm running Ubuntu (On that note, I take it I can't simply install YUM and the subsequent package, since it's an entirely different distro, but if I'm wrong I'd love to hear it). I instead installed two versions of gcc 3.4 - 3.4.0 and 3.4.6 using instructions from this site. I then added the lines suggested by that page to the top of the makefile (on this note, what's the difference between makefile and makefile.in? I tried adding the lines to the top of both files regardless), both for version 3.4.0 and 3.4.6, but both failed. I also tried, on the off-chance, compiling it with my current version (4.4.1), but that also failed. • Draw Bitmap with alpha channel

  I have a Format32bppArgb backbuffer, where I draw some lines: var g = Graphics.FromImage(bitmap); g.Clear(Color.FromArgb(0)); var rnd = new Random(); for (int i = 0; i < 5000; i++) { int x1 = rnd.Next(ClientRectangle.Left, ClientRectangle.Right); int y1 = rnd.Next(ClientRectangle.Top, ClientRectangle.Bottom); int x2 = rnd.Next(ClientRectangle.Left, ClientRectangle.Right); int y2 = rnd.Next(ClientRectangle.Top, ClientRectangle.Bottom); Color color = Color.FromArgb(rnd.Next(0, 255), rnd.Next(0, 255), rnd.Next(0, 255)); g.DrawLine(new Pen(color), x1, y1, x2, y2); } Now I want to copy bitmap in Paint event. I do it like this: void Form1Paint(object sender, PaintEventArgs e) { e.Graphics.DrawImageUnscaled(bitmap, 0, 0); } Hovewer, the DrawImageUnscaled copies pixels and applies the alpha channel, thus pixels with alpha == 0 won't have any effect. But I need raw byte copy, so pixels with alpha == 0 are also copied. So the result of these operations should be that e.Graphics contains exact byte-copy of the bitmap. How to do that? Summary: When drawing a bitmap, I don't want to apply the alpha channel, I merely want to copy the pixels.

• Properly registering JavaScript and CSS in MVC 2 Editor Templates

  How do I properly register javascript blocks in an ASP.NET MVC 2 (RTM) Editor template? The specific scenario I'm in is that I want to use Dynarch JSCal2 DateTimePicker for my standard datetime picker, but this question is in general to any reusable javascript package. I have my template working properly now but it has my JS and CSS includes in my master page and I would rather only include these things if I actually need them: <link rel="stylesheet" type="text/css" href="../../Content/JSCal2-1.7/jscal2.css" /> <link rel="stylesheet" type="text/css" href="../../Content/JSCal2-1.7/border-radius.css" /> <script type="text/javascript" src="../../Scripts/JSCal2-1.7/jscal2.js"></script> <script type="text/javascript" src="../../Scripts/JSCal2-1.7/lang/en.js"></script> So obviously I could just put these lines into my template, but then if I have a screen that has 5 DateTimePickers, then this content would be duplicated 5 times which wouldn't be ideal. Anyways, I still want my View's Template to trigger this code being put into the <head> of my page. • python sqlite3 won't execute a join, but sqlite3 alone will

  Using the sqlite3 standard library in python 2.6.4, the following query works fine on sqlite3 command line: select segmentid, node_t, start, number,title from ((segments inner join position using (segmentid)) left outer join titles using (legid, segmentid)) left outer join numbers using (start, legid, version); But If I execute it via the sqlite3 library in python I get an error: >>> conn=sqlite3.connect('data/test.db') >>> conn.execute('''select segmentid, node_t, start, number,title from ((segments inner join position using (segmentid)) left outer join titles using (legid, segmentid)) left outer join numbers using (start, legid, version)''') Traceback (most recent call last): File "<stdin>", line 1, in <module> sqlite3.OperationalError: cannot join using column start - column not present in both tables The (computed) table on the left hand side of the join appears to have the relevant column because if I check it by itself I get: >>> conn.execute('''select * from ((segments inner join position using (segmentid)) left outer join titles using (legid, segmentid)) limit 20''').description (('segmentid', None, None, None, None, None, None), ('html', None, None, None, None, None, None), ('node_t', None, None, None, None, None, None), ('legid', None, None, None, None, None, None), ('version', None, None, None, None, None, None), ('start', None, None, None, None, None, None), ('title', None, None, None, None, None, None)) My schema is: CREATE TABLE leg (legid integer primary key, t char(16), year char(16), no char(16)); CREATE TABLE numbers ( number char(16), legid integer, version integer, start integer, end integer, prev integer, prev_number char(16), next integer, next_number char(16), primary key (number, legid, version)); CREATE TABLE position ( segmentid integer, legid integer, version integer, start integer, primary key (segmentid, legid, version)); CREATE TABLE 'segments' (segmentid integer primary key, html text, node_t integer); CREATE TABLE titles (legid integer, segmentid integer, title text, primary key (legid, segmentid)); CREATE TABLE versions (legid integer, version integer, primary key (legid, version)); CREATE INDEX idx_numbers_start on numbers (legid, version, start); I am baffled as to what I am doing wrong.
