• OT: Fixing choppy video playback on OS X

  This is a bit off-topic but I wanted to share because it seems a lot of people are running into issues with choppy video playback and stutter on Mac OS X. I am using a Mac Mini with Snow Leopard (10.6.8) as a home media center and it has worked great in the past, playing back music and videos from multiple sources (web, quicktime, VLC, EyeTV). A few weeks ago the video playback from all my sources started to become choppy, to stutter, and often the picture would hang for seconds at a time. Totally unusable. Drove me nuts for two weeks. After much research and trial-and-error it turns out the problem was an outdated Flash Player which seems to have messed up the video pipeline for the entire system. The short is, I updated the Flash Player to version 11 directly from the Adobe web site, rebooted the Mac Mini, and all is well again! Judging from the various posts across the web, video playback appears to be a fairly widespread problem for Mac users and I hope this helps some of you out there! And I can’t wait to get rid of Flash altogether – I can’t remember the times it has crashed my browser, hung my system, and screwed up things. • Getting a lot of postmaster undeliverable notices for non-existent users

  I've had my domain (straightpathsql.com) for a few years now. I host my e-mail with Google Accounts for business and have for awhile. ALl of the sudden in the past week I am starting to get a lot of postmaster delivery fail notices from various domains, most of them involving bogus e-mail addresses at my domain ([email protected], for example)... My assumption here is that someone is trying to relay on some other host (not my hosts which are secure through google apps for business, I presume) and there isn't much I can do to stop it. But I just want to make sure there isn't something else I need to be looking at here.. An example delivery fail notice is below.. I know nothing of those addresses below and they look like garbage... (Quick edit: the reason I get these messages is I set myself up as a catch all, so it doesn't matter what e-mail you send a note to at my domain, I'll get it if the account isn't setup... All of the failure messages are sent to bogus addresses on my domain) The following message to <[email protected]> was undeliverable. • Change the Integrated Weblogic Port number

  There came a situation where I wanted to work with two JDevelopers simultaneously and start two different applications in two JDEVs. (Both of them have to in separate installation location, else it will create a problem because of system directory).Now, when we want to start WLS in JDEV, only the first one will be started and the other one fails with an exception of port conflict. Until few days back, $1million dollar question was how to change the integrated WLS port number?So, heres the answer after some R&D. In the view menu, click on "Application Server Navigator". Right click on Integrated Weblogic server.1) If it is the first time that you are trying to start the server, then there is a menu "Create Default Domain". If you click on this, a window will be displayed where it asks for the preferred port number. Change it here.2) If the domain is already created, then click on Properties and change the preferred port number.Again, if you want to change the port before starting JDEV from the file system, then goto $JDEV_USER_HOME/systemxxx/o.j2ee and open the file adrs-instances.xml and change the http-port in the startup-preferences:<hash n="startup-preferences">   <value n="http-port" v="7111"/></hash>Note 1: adrs-instances.xml will be created ONLY after you create the default domain.Note 2: systemxxx - refers to system.<JDEV version> like system.11.1.1.3.56.59 for PS2.Note 3: $JDEV_USER_HOME - in windows - would be C:\Documents and Settings\[user_name]\Application Data\JDeveloper"Now, you can run multiple Integrated WLS simultaneously. • reinstalling phpmyadmin

  EDIT:: installed mysql-server but no phpmyadmin (since phpmyadmin was installed before mysql, that resulted an error). How to reinstall phpmyadmin with database (there is no phpmyadmin datbase)? unstalling it and reinstalling it didn't help. i was trying to install phpmyadmin (and zend framework) through synaptic manager but in the middle i was prompted for password i thought it was phpmyadmin password and i proceeded but i got error and i aborted. and then again i tried to reinstall, it reinstalled but i am not getting phpmyadmin. • Use Network-Manager to Connect to a wifi Access Point on the command-line

  I'd like to connect to a wireless access point from the command-line. ideally, I'd only need the name of the AP. But the hardware-address would work as well. I know I can use nmcli to connect to a managed network connection, but in my case, the access point may not be configured for Network-Manager yet (See the difference between the output of nm-tool and nmcli con). • Source-control your BI Publisher reports

  Version control systems (VCS) like Subversion, Git and the others has been widely adopted and became the must-have tool in any software development project. Source artifacts and checked out, modified, checked in, all the history of changes is tracked by the VCS.  But what if the development tool stores the source/configuration artifacts not in your laptop's hard drive, but in some shared repository instead? Well, we definitely need a way for export/import our artifacts from/to this repository.   Oracle BI Publisher report development approach is based on such a shared repository model (catalog), and starting from BI Publisher 11.1.1.5 Oracle ships Catalog Utility, which can be utilized to export/import the reports from the command line.  To start using the BI Publisher Catalog Utility you should: Go to the file system of the server where BI Publisher binaries has been installed and locate the following file: <MW_HOME>/Oracle_BI1/clients/bipublisher/BIPCatalogUtil.zip Copy the file to your local filesystem and unzip it. I will refer to this unzipped directory as <BIP_CLIENT_DIR> below If you do not want to pass server BI Publisher server URL, username and password during each invocation, modify the corresponding values inside <BIP_CLIENT_DIR>/config/xmlp-client-config.xml Open the terminal window and go to <BIP_CLIENT_DIR>/bin Make sure that the following environment variables are set: JAVA_HOME, ORACLE_HOME Now it's time to run the utility: if you are on Linux - just run BIPCatalogUtil.sh and pass the parameters according to the utility documentation if you are on MS Windows the bad news are that the command script for MS Windows is missing, and support.oracle.com note 1333726.1 says that a temporary solution is "create a .cmd file by setting up a classpath and copying the same commands from the .sh script". • Problems with icons and shutting down Ubuntu 12.04

  I recently upgraded from 11-10 to 12.04 as a dual boot (Windows 7) and am having problems with shutting down. I installed from a CD that I burned from the iso file, and to get it to boot from the CD, I needed to install the special help program from Windows that would then recognize the CD as the system booted.The installation gave me my own user account as well as a guest account. For the User account there is no "gear" icon (in the upper RH side) from which to access the shut down menu. Interestingly the icons for the Home folder, the Ubuntu One folder, and the System Settings folder are missing, although there are blank places shows these names if the mouse cursor is positioned over these areas. They will even launch with the press of a key - but no icons are visible. For the Guest account, all of these icons are visible and usable. The problem that occurs in shutting down is that I need to leave the User account, move to the Guest account (so that I can access the top right "gear" icon that has the shut down menu item) and press the shut down button. The problem here is that when the shut own menu appears and I press the confirmation that I wish to shut down the computer, the page blanks (as one might hope in the process of closing down), and then pops up with the log in menu, giving the option of logging in as a User or as a Guest. So the questions are: 1) how do you reinstate the far right top icon from which you can access the shut down drop down menu in the User account page. 2) how do you get the icons to display properly on the Left hand side (Home, Ubuntu One, System Settings, and Workspace Switcher) 3) how do you get the system to turn of when you press the shut down button!   Chrome: Bookmark Sentry, a free Chrome extension, takes the hard work out of checking your bookmark file for bad links and duplicates. Install it, forget about it, and get scheduled reports on the state of your bookmarks file. It’s that simple. Once you install the extension, open the options to toggle some basic settings to your liking (like the frequency of the scan, how long you want it to wait for a response, and whether you want it to look for bad links and/or duplicates). Once it finishes scanning you’ll get a report indicating the status of the links (why they are marked as missing or duped) and the ability to selectively or mass delete them. The only caveat we’d share is that it will tell you links behind any sort of security are unavailable. If you bookmark pages that you use for work, behind your corporate firewall for example, if the scanner runs when you’re not authenticated then it won’t be able to reach them. • EBS Seed Data Comparison Reports Now Available

  Earlier this year we released a reporting tool that reports on the differences in E-Business Suite database objects between one release and another.  That's a very useful reference, but EBS defaults are delivered as seed data within the database objects themselves. What about the differences in this seed data between one release and another? • How to blend multiple normal maps?

  I want to achieve a distortion effect which distorts the full screen. For that I spawn a couple of images with normal maps. I render their normal map part on some camera facing quads onto a rendertarget which is cleared with the color (127,127,255,255). This color means that there is no distortion whatsoever. Then I want to render some images like this one onto it: If I draw one somewhere on the screen, then it looks correct because it blends in seamlessly with the background (which is the same color that appears on the edges of this image). If I draw another one on top of it then it will no longer be a seamless transition. For this I created a blendstate in directX 11 that keeps the maximum of two colors, so it is now a seamless transition, but this way, the colors lower than 127 (0.5f normalized) will not contribute. I am not making a simulation and the effect looks quite convincing and nice for a game, but in my spare time I am thinking how I could achieve a nicer or a more correct effect with a blend state, maybe averaging the colors somehow? I I did it with a shader, I would add the colors and then I would normalize them, but I need to combine arbitrary number of images onto a rendertarget. (PS. I considered rendering each one with a separate shader incementally on top of each other but that would consume a lot of render targets which is unacceptable)
