• Distribution upgrade (12.04 -> 14.04 LTS) halted while unpacking/installing packages

  As the title states...it just stopped unpacking/installing. "Preparing to unpack .../lirc_0.9.0-0ubuntu5_amd64.deb ..." then stopped in its tracks. Everything else is still running. The update manager process is still alive; if I hit ctrl-c, it gives me the warning message about leaving the system in a broken state. Also, if I run top, there is a process called "trusty" which is still running. I have NOT killed either process. lsb_release -a gives: LSB Version: core-2.0-amd64:core-2.0-noarch:core-3.0-amd64:core-3.0-noarch:core-3.1-amd64:core-3.1-noarch:core-3.2-amd64:core-3.2-noarch:core-4.0-amd64:core-4.0-noarch Distributor ID: Ubuntu Description: Ubuntu 14.04.1 LTS Release: 14.04 Codename: trusty I assume that if I try to restart update-manager, I won't be offered the option to upgrade again. Anyone have a way I can get the update-manager/dist-upgrade process to simply finish the upgrade? Thanks!

• Battery life low on notebook using ubuntu 11.10 vs. windows 7

  Im using a brand new Dell XPS notebook (bought mar 2012) which has 4.5 hrs battery life using a 6 cell battery-when i use windows 7. The machine uses an Intel core 17 2670qm processor, and a 64 bit operating system. I downloaded Ubuntu 11.10 and installed it on a USB drive, which is how i use it. I still have Windows 7 on the machine. When the machine is booting up I hit F12, and run Ubuntu from the flash drive instead of the machine booting Windows, as it normally would. On the Ubuntu menu, on the top right area, there is a battery menu, which shows how long to charge battery, or how much life left etc..with a fully charged battery the most Ubuntu will give me is 1.5 hrs. I've adjusted all power setting etc by clicking on the battery meter where i can make these adjustments, and have even turned down the brightness on the monitor. I've read through these questions here, and a user wrote to install Ubuntu 12(?)(the alpha version) when it's out this month(april), and this has better power management. Other forums (Ubuntu wiki) state that windows 7 controls power management effectively because it's configured to work with the hardware. I'd like to install Ubuntu and wipe windows but can't because of this issue. I need my notebook to go hours, not an hour and a bit. Can anybody recommend possibly a good software to use, that will work with the machines bios under Ubuntu? Another thought of mine, is- since I didn't yet wipe windows off my hard disk, is windows still possibly controlling the power mgmt aspect on the machine? I've thought of calling tech support at Dell and asking for help there, maybe Dell has something (a tweak?), I can download that'll work under Ubuntu. Looking forward to any help/suggestions i can get here, i'm really stuck on this..

• What is the preferred pattern when attaching a 'runtime object'?

  In my application I have the following: public class NeatObject { /* lots of static data, and configuration flags */ } public class NeatObjectConsumer { void DoCleverStuffWithObjectOnGPU(NeatObject obj); } Where NeatObject and its consumer are used to control the GPU. The idea being that, the configuration of an instance of NeatObject and its members, define how the consumer instance behaves. The object can be passed around, edited, and most importantly serialised/deserialised by the application, with and without knowledge of NeatObjectConsumer, then provided back to the consumer to do something else. The purpose of this seperation is: The consumer manages hardware resources, which change depending on the computer, and even on the execution of the application, making preserving the state of an object which does everything difficult. Avoids circular references if the assembly that contains the consumer needs to reference one that only needs to know about NeatObject. However, there is a complication in that the consumer creates hardware resources and needs to associate them with NeatObject. These don't need to be preserved, but still need to be retrieved. DoCleverStuffWithObjectOnGPU() will be called many, many times during execution and so any bottleneck is a concern, therefore I would like to avoid dictionary lookups. What is the preferred method of attaching this information to NeatObject? By preferred, I mean intuitive - other coders can see immediately what is going on - and robust - method doesn't invite playing with the resources or present them in such a way as to make them easily corruptible. Essentially, I want to add my own metadata - how should I do it? Try to use 'actual metadata' functionality like Reflection? A member of the type of an abstract class? Unmanaged pointers? If you took on a project that used this pattern, what would you have liked the previous developer to do?

• Drupal site Instant Messaging [migrated]

  I am trying to find a module or a standalone solution that I can turn into a module that will allow me to have an instant messaging system like Facebook does on a Drupal site that I am working on. I have never setup a chat system before. My particular requirements are rather stringent. It needs to be a solution where we host the chatting server (if one is needed separate from the website itself). It must use the site's login state (can't use an external system at all, that means no GTalk, Yahoo IM, or AIM). It also must be able to handle up to 1,000 users at any given time. I have looked through the Drupal community and I tried the DXMPP module, but it requires Jquery UI 1.8 and that doesn't work with all of the other things that my site uses (such as Homebox). We do have a Jabber server already setup and ready to go. Does anyone have any thoughts or options here? Thanks! EDIT: We are using Drupal 6.

• 3.2.0-31-generic version doesn't boot

  12.04 used to work just fine a month ago. Since August, I installed all of the available updates. Since then my mac-pro is acting weird. If I restart the computer, the screen gets stuck in the purple back ground without any texts. Then if I restart again, I can choose what versions of linux I want to run. If I select 3.2.0-31-generic, the machine gets stuck in a state of blinking cursor. If I boot again to run 3.2.0-31-generic recovery mode, the machine gets stuck in a "..... memory freed End of Stack" mode. I can't boot through this kernel. I have to choose an older version of linux like 3.2.0-12-generic to boot into my mac pro, but I have too boot twice to get into this version. I was wondering --if you could provide me a solution to boot the 3.2.0-31-generic version. -- if you could provide me a solution to boot into any version the first time I restart. (Usually I have to kill the first restart) --- If there is an option in linux to choose what version I want to run every time I restart so that I don't have to choose everytime. Thank you

• Interfaces: profit of using

  First of all, my ubiquitous language is PHP, and I'm thinking about learning Java. So let me split my question on two closely related parts. Here goes the first part. Say I have a domain-model class. It has some getters, setters, some query methods etc. And one day I want to have a possibility to compare them. So it looks like: class MyEntity extends AbstractEntity { public function getId() { // get id property } public function setId($id) { // set id property } // plenty of other methods that set or retrieve data public function compareTo(MyEntity $anotherEntity) { // some compare logic } } If it would have been Java, I should have implemented a Comparable interface. But why? Polymorphism? Readbility? Or something else? And if it was PHP -- should I create Comparable interface for myself? So here goes the second part. My colleague told me that it is a rule of thumb in Java to create an interface for every behavioral aspect of the class. For example, if I wanted to present this object as a string, I should state this behaviour by something like implements Stringable, where in case of PHP Stringable would look like: interface Stringable { public function __toString(); } Is that really a rule of thumb? What benefits are gained with this approach? And does it worth it in PHP? And in Java?

• Should I amortize scripting cost via bytecode analysis or multithreading?

  I'm working on a game sort of thing where users can write arbitrary code for individual agents, and I'm trying to decide the best way to divide up computation time. The simplest option would be to give each agent a set amount of time and skip their turn if it elapses without an action being decided upon, but I would like people to be able to write their agents decision functions without having to think too much about how long its taking unless they really want to. The two approaches I'm considering are giving each agent a set number of bytecode instructions (taking cost into account) each timestep, and making players deal with the consequences of the game state changing between blocks of computation (as with Battlecode) or giving each agent it's own thread and giving each thread equal time on the processor. I'm about equally knowledgeable on both concurrency and bytecode stuff, which is to say not very, so I'm wondering which approach would be best. I have a clearer idea of how I'd structure things if I used bytecode, but less certainty about how to actually implement the analysis. I'm pretty sure I can work up a concurrency based system without much trouble, but I worry it will be messier with more overhead and will add unnecessary complexity to the project.

Evrything is working fine but, only issue is coming when we are trying to apply custom formatter to column. This issue comes only when we are dynamically assign "colModel" to jqgrid. Now if I run both applications and observe opened TCP connections using netstat, I find that: If both client and server are running on same machine, number of tcp connections are equal to number of proxy objects. It means all requests are being served in parallel. Which is good. If I run server on a separate machine, I observed that maximum 2 TCP connections are opened regardless of the number of proxy objects I create. Only 2 requests run in parallel. It hurts the processing speed badly. If I switch to net.tcp binding, everything works fine (a separate TCP connection for each proxy object even if they are running on different machines). I am very confused and unable to make the basicHttpBinding use more TCP connections. I know it is a long question, but please help!

• WCF Publish/Subscribe and using callbacks to send data to specific users

  Hello thanks for looking, I'm working on a project at the moment and have become a little stuck. I'm creating a client server app, which allows a client to subscribe to the server to have messages forwarded to it. The issue I'm having is that when the client subscribes I wish for them to only recieve updates that relate to them. The system basically passes messages from a SQL server DB which the server monitors. When a new message is recieved the server should only forward the message to the clients that it applys to, based on whos logged on the client machine. I've had a look and found code samples which sign up for messages to be broadcast across all clients who have subscribed, but not any that show how to identify individual clients and if messages apply to them. If anyone could help or point me in the right direction it would be appreciated. • C# powershell output reader iterator getting modified when pipeline closed and disposed.

  Hello, I'm calling a powershell script from C#. The script is pretty small and is "gps;$host.SetShouldExit(9)", which list process, and then send back an exit code to be captured by the PSHost object. The problem I have is when the pipeline has been stopped and disposed, the output reader PSHost collection still seems to be written to, and is filling up. So when I try and copy it to my own output object, it craps out with a OutOfMemoryException when I try to iterate over it. Sometimes it will except with a Collection was modified message. • no namenode error in pseudo-mode

  I'm new to hadoop and is in learning phase. As per Hadoop Definitve guide, i have set up my hadoop in pseudo distributed mode and everything was working fine. I was even able to execute all the examples from chapter 3 yesterday. Today, when i rebooted my unix and tried to run start-dfs.sh and then tried http://localhost/50070....it is showing error and when i try to stop dfs (stop-dfs.sh) it says no namenode to stop. I have been googling the issue but no result. Also, when i format my namenode again...everything starts working fine and i'm able to connect to the localhost/50070 and even replicate files and directories in hdfs but as soon as i restart my linux and try to connect to hdfs the same problem comes up.   I'm using D2K9, Zeos 7Alpha, and Firebird 2.1 I had this working before I added the autoinc field. Although I'm not sure I was doing it 100% correctly.   I have tested code to call a method inside of a compiled DLL, and it works. I created a class to store the object, type, and loaded assembly, but something is lost in translation because it is unable to find the member I wish to invoke. If I create a type, object, and assembly, and properly load everything into these and perform InvokeMember on the type, it works just fine. However, when I use the things inside of my class, it throws a MissingMemberException and does not invoke the member, obviously. What am I doing wrong? The member in question is a subroutine which takes one argument, a string. This is quite frustrating. • Implementing touch-based rotation in cocoa touch

  I am wondering what is the best way to implement rotation-based dragging movements in my iPhone application. I have a UIView that I wish to rotate around its centre, when the users finger is touch the view and they move it. Think of it like a dial that needs to be adjusted with the finger. • Android - Saving an object in onSaveInstanceState?

  I have created a small XML parsing application for Android that displays information in a listview and then allows a user to click on the list view and a dialog with further info will pop up. The problem is that when the screen orientation is changed when a dialog screen is open I get a null pointer error.
