  In this MSDN Magazine article Peter Vogel describes Extension Objects partten. What is not clear is whether extensions can be later implemented by client code residing in a separate assembly. And if so how in this case can extension get acces to private members of the objet being extended? I quite often need to set different access levels for different classes. Sometimes I really need that descendants does not have access to the mebmer but separate class does. (good old friend classes) Now I solve this in C# by exposing callback properties in interface of the external class and setting them with private methods. This also alows to adjust access: read only or read|write depending on the desired interface. class Parent { private int foo; public void AcceptExternal(IFoo external) { external.GetFooCallback = () => this.foo; } } interface IFoo { Func<int> GetFooCallback {get;set;} } Other way is to explicitly implement particular interface. But I suspect more aspproaches exist.

• I'm a Subversion geek, why should I consider or not consider Mercurial or Git or any other DVCS?

  I try to understand the benefits of distributed version control system (DVCS). I found Subversion Re-education and this article by Martin Fowler very useful. Mercurial and others DVCS promote a new way of working on code with changesets and local commits. It prevents from merging hell and other collaboration issues We are not affected by this as I practice continuous integration and working alone in a private branch is not an option, unless we are experimenting. We use a branch for every major version, in which we fix bugs merged from the trunk. Mercurial allows you to have lieutenants I understand this can be useful for very large projects like Linux, but I don't see the value in small and highly collaborative teams (5 to 7 people). Mercurial is faster, takes less disk space and full local copy allows faster logs & diffs operations. I'm not concerned by this either, as I didn't notice speed or space problems with SVN even with very large projects I'm working on. I'm seeking for your personal experiences and/or opinions from former SVN geeks. Especially regarding the changesets concept and overall performance boost you measured. UPDATE (12th Jan): I'm now convinced that it worth a try. UPDATE (12th Jun): I kissed Mercurial and I liked it. The taste of his cherry local commits. I kissed Mercurial just to try it. I hope my SVN Server don't mind it. It felt so wrong. It felt so right. Don't mean I'm in love tonight. FINAL UPDATE (29th Jul): I had the privilege to review Eric Sink's next book called Version Control by Example. He finished to convince me. I'll go for Mercurial.

• Basic Puppet installation with Solaris 11.2 beta

  At the recent announcement we talked a lot about the Puppet integration. But how do you set it up? I want to show this in this blog entry. However this example i'm using is even useful in practice. Due to the extremely low overhead of zones i'm frequently seeing really large numbers of zones on a single system. Changing /etc/hosts or changing an SMF service property on 3 systems is not that hard. Doing it on a system with 500 zones is ... let say it diplomatic ... a job you give to someone you want to punish. Puppet can help in this case making of managing the configuration and to ease the distribution. You describe the changes you want to make in a file or set of file called manifest in the Puppet world and then roll them out to your servers, no matter if they are virtual or physical. A warning at first: Puppet is a really,really vast topic. This article is really basic and it doesn't goes more than just even toe's deep into the possibilities and capabilities of Puppet. It doesn't try to explain Puppet ... just how you get it up and running and do basic tests. There are many good books on Puppet. Please read one of them, and the concepts and the example will get much clearer immediately. (more)

• Having extreme issues getting Compiz working on Ubuntu 11.10 (32-bit)

  I have been working very hard the past few days to try to get Compiz configured and working correctly but I have been running into a lot of issues. I first installed the CompizConfig Settings Manager and tried different features such as the desktop cube and couldn't get any of them to work. Then I read that I may not have the right graphics card drivers installed (Nvidia GT540m). So I went into the Additional Drivers tool and it shows that 'no proprietary drivers are in use on this system', which struck me as a bit odd as when I very first installed Ubuntu it showed that my Nvidia drivers were installed an active until I downloaded and installed the updates to Ubuntu and since then it's shown empty. I then tried to install my graphics card drivers manually via this article How do I install the latest Nvidia drivers via the Additional Drivers tool?. I rebooted and had no issue although I tried to go back into the CompizConfig Settings Manager and couldn't get anything to work as well as my Additional Drivers tool still showed no drivers installed. I feel like I've tried about everything I can think of and any help would be much appreciated!

• Is The Ease Of Windows Phone Development Ruining Its Image

  I was reading an article on Mashable recently by a long time iPhone user who is living solely on a Lumia 920 at the moment and giving her assessment.  One thing that struck a nerve with me was her describing the Windows Phone ecosystem as immature.  She wasn’t saying this because of the number of apps or the big names like most people do.  She means the quality of the apps in the store. This hit a nerve with me.  I find it hard to believe that the majority of app on iOS are of any higher quality than any other platform.  I believe in any ecosystem you are going to find some high end, high quality apps, but the majority by default will be from people who are trying to solve a problem but do not have the resources to have top graphics and full blown testing.  There will also be a large number that are just there trying to trick you into giving up some cash. Does any of the mean that we shouldn’t take notice of this complaint?  Of course not!  We should always strive to publish the best quality apps possible.  Don’t do things like leaving default app icons and backgrounds.  Put a little effort into your design.  You should also spend as much time as possible ensuring against crashes and giving the user the best experience possible.  Think through your apps organization and navigation.  Go the extra step of putting it into beta and letting select people use it and give you feedback before going to full release. • Intermittent freezing on a Macbook Pro 7,1

  I recently installed Ubuntu 12.10 on my MacBook Pro 7, 1. I used to have 11.10 on it. I've encountered a problem were I can boot up and the login screen works flawlessly. When I attempt to log into my account I set up during install it would only show the default wallpaper and the mouse was frozen. In other words it was logging on but froze up. Is what it seems like. When I rebooted I attempted to log into the guest account. I was able to log in and it seemed everything worked so I tried to update everything figuring it may be the problem. After updating and restarting as prompted I tried to login to my account. It still froze up but this time showing "glitched up" (you can see the dock and status bar but they don't look like they should) and still freezes. This is all happening on the guest account to. I was unable to find a similar article on the Internet therefore I am asking; Any thoughts Ubuntu?

• A tip: Updating Data in SharePoint 2010 using REST API

  SharePoint 2010 Training: more information Here is a little tip that will save you hours of head scratching. See there are two ways to update data in SharePoint using REST based API. A PUT request is used to update an entire entity. If no values are specified for fields in the entity, the fields will be set to default values. A MERGE request is used to update only those field values that have changed. Any fields that are not specified by the operation will remain set to their current value.   Now, sit back and think about it. You are going to update the entire entity! Hmm. Which means, you need to a) specify every column value, and b) ensure that the read only values match what was supplied to you. What a pain in the donkey! So 99/100 times, a PUT request will give you a HTTP 500 internal server error occurred, which is just so helpful. Read full article ....

• Focusing and Selecting the Text in ASP.NET TextBox Controls

  When a browser displays the HTML sent from a web server it parses the received markup into a Document Object Model, or DOM, which models the markup as a hierarchical structure. Each element in the markup - the <form> element, <div> elements, <p> elements, <input> elements, and so on - are represented as a node in the DOM and can be programmatically accessed from client-side script. What's more, the nodes that make up the DOM have functions that can be called to perform certain behaviors; what functions are available depend on what type of element the node represents. One function common to most all node types is focus, which gives keyboard focus to the corresponding element. The focus function is commonly used in data entry forms, search pages, and login screens to put the user's keyboard cursor in a particular textbox when the web page loads so that the user can start typing in his search query or username without having to first click the textbox with his mouse. Another useful function is select, which is available for <input> and <textarea> elements and selects the contents of the textbox. • Object desing problem for simple school application

I'm trying to design objects for this problem and I'm little bit confused - because I'm not very experienced in class designing. But I'm sure it's not the best way. For example I want that one person could be a Teacher and also a Parent(Counselor) and present approach makes me to have two Person objects. I want that user after successful logging in get all roles that it has (Student or Teacher or (Teacher & Parent) ). I think I should make and use some interfaces but I'm not sure how to do this right. • Twitter "Authentication Error" Turpial & Choqok (latest versions)

  I use Turpial a lot, but Turpial isn't connecting at all. I can still connect to Twitter thru the OS app (no issues signing in through Online Accounts) and of course I can still sign in using the browser, but Turpial gives me an "Authentication Error" and Choqok fails to do anything. I've tried changing my password, revoking the Turpial and Ubuntu apps in Twitter and re-enabling them, but then it gives me an "Invalid Credentials" message. I've even removed and installed Turpial multiple times, still nothing. I can't find any information or resources for this type of error from Turpial online. I think it may be something recent after finding this message elsewhere: (article related to "Birdie") It looks promising i'm currently using it atm, since all the other twitter clients no longer work due to the API 1.0 shutdown (posted today) I've never used Choqok before today, so I don't even know if I've set it up properly. It's failing to retrieve or send Tweets it just blank screens, but at least it signs in. I've figured that this isn't an issue with Ubuntu, or Turpial or Choqok, or the router (already replaced it today), so I don't really know what I'm dealing with here. I hope it's not another API issue, Facebook did something similar just a few weeks ago

• maxItemsInObjectGraph limit required to be changed for server and client

  We have a wcf service, that expects to return a huge XML data. It worked ok in testing, but in production it failed with error  "Maximum number of items that can be serialized or deserialized in an object graph is '65536'. Change the object graph or increase the MaxItemsInObjectGraph quota."The MSDN article about   dataContractSerializer xml configuration  element  correctly  describes maxItemsInObjectGraph attribute default as 65536, but documentation for of the DataContractSerializer.MaxItemsInObjectGraph property and DataContractJsonSerializer.MaxItemsInObjectGraph Property are talking about Int32.MaxValue, which causes confusion, in particular because Google shows properties articles before configuration articles.When we changed the value in WCF service configuration, it didn't help, because the similar change must be ALSO done on client.There are similar posts:http://stackoverflow.com/questions/6298209/how-to-fix-maxitemsinobjectgraph-error/6298356#6298356You need to set the MaxItemsInObjectGraph on the dataContractSerializer using a behavior on both the client and service. • Content light website and Google - Tell google it's a listings site (as opposed shop, reviews or restaurants)

  I have a listings style website. Due to the nature of this (listings) the site is content light. Each page is typically less that 50 words but there are many pages. The site in question has had a ton of media coverage and so has some great inbound links from places like Wired, Fast Company, Canada Broadcasting Corporation and many many other bloggers, media websites and recycle related niche authors (It's a recycling site). But Google really ignores it. Traffic from search is very very low - less than 5% of all traffic. I know that using markup you can tell Google whether your site is a restaurant, article, review, shop, local business and a few other categories (https://www.google.com/webmasters/markup-helper/u/0/). Is there a way to tell Google that my site is a listings site? I suspect, but do not know for sure, that part of the problem is that Google simply does not know what my site is? It's a crowdmap where people post curbalerts. The information is useful to people but it is presented in a short, concise way - a pin on a map, a picture and a short description. Adding anything further is not necessary for the site's intended purpose. 1st question - how best to tell the search engines what y site is - listings and not some spammy website? • Gesture Based NetBeans Tip Infrastructure

  All/most/many gestures you make in NetBeans IDE are recorded in an XML file in your user directory, "var/log/uigestures", which is what makes the Key Promoter I outlined yesterday possible. The idea behind it is for analysis to be made possible, when you periodically pass the gestures data back to the NetBeans team. See http://statistics.netbeans.org for details. Since the gestures in the 'uigestures' file are identifiable by distinct loggers and other parameters, there's no end to the interesting things that one is able to do with it. While the NetBeans team can see which gestures are done most frequently, e.g., which kinds of projects are created most often, thus helping in prioritizing new features and bugs, etc, you as the user can, depending on who and how the initiative is taken, directly benefit from your collected data, too. Tim Boudreau, in a recent article, mentioned the usefulness of hippie completion. So, imagine that whenever you use code completion, a tip were to appear reminding you about hippie completion. And then you'd be able to choose whether you'd like to see the tip again or not, etc, i.e., customize the frequency of tips and the types of tips you'd like to be shown. And then, it could be taken a step further. The tip plugin could be set up in such a way that anyone would be able to register new tips per gesture. For example, maybe you have something very interesting to share about code completion in NetBeans. So, you'd create your own plugin in which there'd be an HTML file containing the text you'd like to have displayed whenever you (or your team members, or your students, maybe?) use code completion. Then you'd register that HTML file in plugin's layer file, in a subfolder dedicated to the specific gesture that you're interested in commenting on. The same is true, not just for NetBeans IDE, but for anyone creating their applications on top of the NetBeans Platform, of course.

• What gaming keyboard(s) will work with Ubuntu?

  I've been looking at gaming keyboards to use on Ubuntu system. Microsoft has a few popular ones (e.g., Sidewinder X4, X6), but the programmable function keys appear to be unusable without the Windows software. (Though here's a post from someone who has a more recent project that uses usbmon and xdotool to add functions to some keys.) Another choice in my budget is the Cyborg V.05. It seems about right for my needs, but I would be depressed having a bunch of useless, nonprogrammable keys on it. Logitech has some models (e.g., the Logitech G110), though again I expect that the extensive macro capabilities (which I don't need) would be lost under Linux. There's a project called g15tools which has some code to work with older Logitech gaming models, but I don't know what the current status is. Last entry there was in March 2010. There are also a number of very old posts around the internet with regard to the Logitech G11 and G15. Compatibility with the current keyboards, Ubuntu version, and Linux kernel are suspect. I'm in the U.S., and so it appears that few of the Roccat keyboards are available, and they're over-priced. Support might be OK for these, though -- there's a short Phoronix article about Roccat improving their Linux support, and there's also a project and webpage for "Using Roccat Hardware with Linux". Honestly, the only feature I have to have is good backlighting for the keys, and if it's not wired (which is fine), the wireless capability should function. I could probably live with dead function keys, as long as they weren't in places that would interfere with things like Unity/compiz shortcuts. Any experience or suggestions? I've not seen much to inspire confidence with programmable/macro keys. There is a thread (with no solutions) on the Sidewinder X4 on ubuntuforums here. I'm also considering the Logitech Illuminated Keyboard as a possibility, even though it's not specifically a gaming keyboard. It is backlit, and it's supposed to be a nice keyboard.

• Ubuntu 11.04 64bits Keeps Randomly Freezing

  This has been a real headache for me since the number of freezes has increase from twice a week to about 1 or twice a day. The system just halts and nothing can be done but hitting the restart button. At the beginning I thought it was related to Flash since I was getting random freezes when playing full screen flash videos online. I also thought it could be the wireless pci card. But the system has freezed using browsing around GNOME. The truth is, the freezes are really random and strange. I checked this thread Ubuntu keeps randomly freezing and try to ssh my computer using another one, but I could not ssh since it was really totally frozen. NumLock or CapsLock wasn't responding or blinking. Since I could not ssh I, also ignored this article https://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Troubleshooting/Freeze According to my wife, the system has also halted under Win7 Pro 64bit but with less frequency. Here is my system configuration Intel Core i7 2600k ASRock Z68 Extreme3 gen3 Motherboard Crucial M4 128GB CT128M4SSD2 SSD WD Caviar Green WD10EADS 1TB SATA II G.SKILL Ripjaws X Series 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR2 OCZ ModXStream 600W Power Supply Rosewill RNX-N300X PCI Wireless Adapter No external Graphics Card I remove the Wireless card and used Ethernet to see if the problem was the that, but I got a freeze after doing that. I also ran memtest86 and everything was ok. The only other thing I might suspect of is the SSD. I will try to clone the SSD to a HDD to see if that solve the problem. At this point I am stuck with the freezes. Do anyone have a clue of why this is happening and how can i solve this?

• Is there a better strategy than relying on the compiler to catch errors?

  I've been programming in C and C++ for some time, although I would say I'm far from being an expert. For some time, I've been using various strategies to develop my code such as unit tests, test driven design, code reviews and so on. When I wrote my first programs in BASIC, I typed in long blocks before finding they would not run and they were a nightmare to debug. So I learned to write a small bit and then test it. These days, I often find myself repeatedly writing a small bit of code then using the compiler to find all the mistakes. That's OK if it picks up a typo but when you start adjusting the parameters types etc just to make it compile you can screw up the design. It also seems that the compiler is creeping into the design process when it should only be used for checking syntax. There's a danger here of over reliance on the compiler to make my programs better. Are there better strategies than this? I vaguely remember some time ago an article on a company developing a type of C compiler where an extra header file also specified the prototypes. The idea was that inconsistencies in the API definition would be easier to catch if you had to define it twice in different ways.

• Directory Synchronization

  We’re using federated security with Office 365 and everything was running swimmingly and then I started getting the following error when trying to synchronize security information: “An unknown error occurred with the Microsoft Online Services Sign-in Assistant. Contact Technical Support.” Great.  Very descriptive.  In the event viewer, you get a bit more detail: GetAuthState() failed with -2147186688 state. HResult:0. Contact Technical Support.  (0x80048831) If you do some searching, you’ll find that there are a couple of MSDN articles about this error.  In KB2502710 you’re told to reinstall sign in assistant.  This one requires a reboot.  In KB2517393 you’re told to make sure that your proxy settings are working correctly.  I’m not using a proxy and everything was set up right. Rather frustrating and I couldn’t figure out what was going on.  What finally keyed me in was the error number being presented.  Rather than 80048800, which is listed in the second article, I was getting 80048831.  I did a quick search and found something that was seemingly unrelated here.  Could it really be so simple as the password having expired for my synchronization user? Turns out, it was that simple.  Once the password was reset and reentered, everything worked great again. Since this isn’t a user that humans use, I also don’t want the password to expire.  You can find the instructions for that (use Set-MsolUser –UserPrincipalName <user ID> –PasswordNeverExpires $true) here. • 1 ASPX Page, Multiple Master Pages

  So recently I had an ASPX page that could be visited by two different user types.  User type A would use Master Page 1 and user type B would use Master Page 2.  So I put together a proof of concept to see if it was possible to change the MasterPage in code.  I found a great article on the Microsoft ASP.net website. Specifying the Master Page Programmatically (C#) by Scott Mitchell So I created a MasterPage call Alternate.Master to act as a generic place holder.  I also created a Master1.Master and a Master2.Master.  The ASPX page, Default.aspx will use this MasterPage.  It will also use the Page_PreInit event to programmatically set the MasterPage.  1: protected void Page_PreInit(object sender, EventArgs e) { 2: var useMasterPage = Request.QueryString["use"]; 3: if (useMasterPage == "1") 4: MasterPageFile = "~/Master1.Master"; 5: else if (useMasterPage == "2") 6: MasterPageFile = "~/Master2.Master"; 7: }   In my Default.aspx page I have the following links in the markup: 1: <p> 2: <asp:HyperLink runat="server" ID="cmdMaster1" NavigateUrl="~/Default.aspx?use=1" Text="Use Master Page 1" /> 3: </p> 4: <p> 5: <asp:HyperLink runat="server" ID="cmdMaster2" NavigateUrl="~/Default.aspx?use=2" Text="Use Master Page 2" /> 6: </p> So the basic idea is when a user clicks the HyperLink to use Master Page 1, the default.aspx.cs code behind will set the property MasterPageFile to use Master1.Master.  The same goes with the link to use Master Page 2.  It worked like a charm!  To see the actual code, feel free to download a copy here: Project Name: Skyhook.MultipleMasterPagesWeb http://skyhookprojectviewer.codeplex.com

• ADF Logging In Deployed Apps

  Harking back to my series on using the ADF logger and the related  ADF Insider Video, I've had a couple of queries this week about using the logger from Enterprise Manager (EM). I've alluded in those previous materials to how EM can be used but it's evident that folks need a little help.  So in this article, I'll quickly look at how you can switch logging on from the EM console for an application and how you can view the output.  Before we start I'm assuming that you have EM up and running, in my case I have a small test install of Fusion Middleware Patchset 5 with an ADF application deployed to a managed server. Step 1 - Select your Application In the EM navigator select the app you're interested in: At this point you can actually bring up the context ( right mouse click) menu to jump to the logging, but let's do it another way.  Step 2 - Open the Application Deployment Menu At the top of the screen, underneath the application name, you'll find a drop down menu which will take you to the options to view log messages and configure logging, thus: Step 3 - Set your Logging Levels  Just like the log configuration within JDeveloper, we can set up transient or permanent (not recommended!) loggers here. In this case I've filtered the class list down to just oracle.demo, and set the log level to config. You can now go away and do stuff in the app to generate log entries. Step 4 - View the Output  Again from the Application Deployment menu we can jump to the log viewer screen and, as I have here, start to filter down the logging output to the stuff you're interested in.  In this case I've filtered by module name. You'll notice here that you can again look at related log messages. Importantly, you'll also see the name of the log file that holds this message, so it you'd rather analyse the log in more detail offline, through the ODL log analyser in JDeveloper, then you can see which log to download.
