• Decent FREE Web Based FTP Alternatives?

  Like the subject mentions, I'm looking for a free FTP Alternative that's web based. What I need is the ability to grant people like our marketing team the ability to upload marketing images and instantly have those images show up in ourdomain.com/images/newimage.jpg. I have found plenty of excellent file sharing programs that are essentially drop box and sharepoint alternatives but have yet to find an FTP Alternative. Also ideally multiple account authentication would be great. If anyone is familiar with cPanel I'm essentially looking for their File Manager or something very similar to it (obviously stand alone and preferably free). Does anybody know if anything like this exists?

• Security Alert for CVE-2011-5035 Updated

  Hi, this is Eric Maurice again.  Oracle has just updated the Security Alert for CVE-2011-5035 to announce the availability of additional fixes for products that were affected by this vulnerability through their use of the WebLogic Server and Oracle Container for J2EE components.  As explained in a previous blog entry, a number of programming language implementations and web servers were found vulnerable to hash table collision attacks.  This vulnerability is typically remotely exploitable without authentication, i.e., it may be exploited over a network without the need for a username and password.  If successfully exploited, malicious attackers can use this vulnerability to create denial of service conditions against the targeted system. A complete list of affected products and their versions, as well as instructions on how to obtain the fixes, are listed on the Security Alert Advisory.  Oracle highly recommends that customers apply these fixes as soon as possible.

  One of things I do in my Resume is try to quantify the impact my work has had in the particular company I was with at the time. The reason is it shows the value my work had added to the business. Is this what you guys do as well or am I the only one? In my previous job this was easy as I worked on short/medium internal applications and it was fairly easy to measure end result. For example, external consulting company quoted $50,000 for an application Business Services department wanted I completed it in 3 days so I say I saved the company $48,000. I have been in my current job for 3 years but all of it has been on 1 single well established product. About 30% work is maintenance and 70% work is on new modules. I have worked on various modules like API (WCF), Security (2 factor authentication), etc. How should I quantify work on modules? Many thanks.

  I am going to buy Logitech C510 HD webcam and I just checked on other questions here on AskUbuntu that it works out of the box with cheese. Jorge's response also confirm this and I feel confident buying it now. My question is can it be limited in any functionality that I would like to do with it? I would like it to be used with everything - Skype, Gtalk video chat, Facebook, Youtube etc. Also this may sound lame but I need to know whether I could record or do a video call in lesser resolution video (its a 720p one)? • What frameworks are available for cross device 2d game development?

  I'm about to embark on a 2D gaming project. Initially, I'll be targeting iPhone and Facebook, but would like to expand the rollout to include Android (and possibly Windows Phone) in a future phase. Flash and Unity seem to be the most likely suspects, but is one better than the other? Are there pros/cons that may not be obvious at first glance? Are there frameworks that I have not considered? I am primarily a .NET developer, so the Unity C# integration is appealling. But I also have experience with AS3, JavaScript and Objective-C. Rich

  If you get "Receive Anonymous Level Security token" message in IE8 when trying to access Shared Services or Workspace URL.Workaround:a. Go to Start > Run and enter dcomcnfgb. Expand Component Services, Expand Computers and right click on My Computer and select Propertiesc. Click on the Default Properties tab.  Change the Default Authentication Level to Connect.  Click apply and then OK.d. Launch the IE browser again and you will be able to access the URL.

• Can't login to Ubuntu One

  I uninstalled Ubuntu One about two months ago and now I re-installed it. I can still login with my account through the site (Ubuntu One) but the client keeps telling me "The authentication failed". If I try to use the Recover password option it also fails with telling me that my email address is not recognized (while I can use it with zero issues through the site) If I attempt to create a new account from the client, it also fails to load the captcha every time. Something is clearly broken here but I can't figure out what it is. Any ideas?

• $ON_USER returning root instead of $USER

  Hello everybody! With Natty coming out soon, I've been at work updating my deployment and self-config script to make my desktop on 11.04 run and look the way I want it to. One bummer is that dbus seems to have changed and does not permit, in the same manner Lucid and Maverick did, the authentication of the current user by terminal call using grep and cat. Ideally, to run the script, I would sudo -s and then launch it as # chmod +x install && ./install Instead of returning my user name.. it now returns root and applies changes to the root profile and aborts whenever paths do not correspond. Here is my script header: #!/bin/bash ON_USER=$(echo ~ | awk -F'/' '{ print $1 $2 $3 }' | sed 's/home//g') export $(grep -v "^#" ~/.dbus/session-bus/`cat /var/lib/dbus/machine-id`-0) if sudo -u $ON_USER test -z "$DBUS_SESSION_BUS_ADDRESS" ; then eval `sudo -u $ON_USER dbus-launch --sh-syntax --exit-with-session` fi RELEASE=$(lsb_release -cs) How could I make it return the actual user now that natty is coming? • Forum that integrates into CMS and has curated category pages with tagged threads

  I'm looking for a forum that meets these requirements: Login using Facebook/Twitter/OpenID etc. User profiles with reward system Voting/thumbs up function Categories and tags for sorting threads Custom category pages with moderated static header Embeddable threads and categories (For example, a whole category or single thread can be integrated into wordpress) API to users, discussions etc. I've looked at forums like Vanilla, Disqus, OSQA etc, but none seem to match the above "hybrid criteria". Hosted or self-hosted doesn't matter but I'm really looking for something that can be integrated into an existing CMS to replace comments while at the same time have curated category pages and user profiles. • Why does the sudo command not work in chroot?

  I just installed a 32-bit chroot to run on my 64-bit system. In the chroot environment, the sudo command doesn't work, it says sudo: command not found Also, when I try the su root command, my password doesn't work (su: authentication failure). What password do they want? I'm quite new to Ubuntu, so actually I don't really know what I'm doing. I am just trying to follow instructions. I solved this particular problem simply by starting the chroot by the command: katarina@ubuntu:~$ schroot -c oneiric_i386 -u root instead of the one I used the first time: katarina@ubuntu:~$ schroot -a I still have some other problems, but I guess that's not for this question.

• Expected salary for software engineer? Am I under or over paid? [closed]

  I work for a reasonably large tech company in Boston, MA. My company has about 1.2 billion in revenue and around 3500 employees. I have 6 years of industry experience and my current pay package is as follows: Base salary: 97,000 bonus: 10,000/year (everyone always gets 100% of this... i don't know why they bother call it bonus) RSU stock: 8000/year at present day valuation. My vesting schedule covers me for the next 5 years. that brings my total pay to ~ 115,000/year Given that, would folks say I am under/average/over paid? I read so much about how engineers at google and facebook are making ridiculous sums of money (almost 200k with bonuses included) and it makes me question my pay package. thanks

I recently discussed & visited some of the websites which states that java is better then .net, a I also discussed with some of the experience persons all suggested me to switch to java of course spring, struts etc. As Java developer is being paid high then .net one. I personally think I should go for web services SOAP, XML etc. thanks to all for response I also want to know if I can only move to webservices ex. • FatCow and iPage real deal?

  I need a cheap host that I can upgrade if needed for a startup. From searching, FatCow and iPage seem reliable and inexpensive web hosting services with a Unix OS and good bandwidth + disk space. I suspect they were bought from the same company. They propose to offer unlimited bandwidth/disc space and perks like AdSense/Facebook credit however, they're packages range from 1-3 years @ 3.15 USD/mo, there isn't a monthly package but they do allow you to cancel at anytime and there servers run on wind-mill generated energy which is a plus. I was suspicious because I couldnt seem to find one negative review about them, just affiliate pages until I read a review explaining they're strict policies on copywritten data. Has anyone experience with one of these two hosts?

• A Better Way To Extract Date From DateTime Columns [SQL Server]

  Quite a long ago I wrote about a SQL Server programming tip on how to extract date part from a DATETIME column. The post discusses about using of T SQL function convert() to get date part. One of the readers of the post, tipped me about a better way of extracting date part and here is the SQL query he sent to us SELECT DateAdd(day, DateDiff(day, 0, getdate()), 0); In clean way this query trims off time part from the DATETIME value. I rate this solution better than the one I wrote long ago as this one does not depend on any string operations. According the commenter, this method is faster compared to the other. What do you say?
