• Oracle Communications Calendar Server: Upgrading to Version 7 Update 3

  It's been some time since I have posted an entry. Now, with the release of Oracle Communications Calendar Server 7 Update 3, it seems high time to jump start this blog again. To begin with, check out what's new in this release: Authenticating Against an External Directory Booking Window for Calendars Changes to the davadmin Command Enable and Disable Account Autocreation LDAP Pools New Configuration Parameters New Languages New populate-davuniqueid Utility New Schema Objects Non-active Calendar Accounts Are No Longer Searched or Fetched Remote Document Store Authentication The upgrade is a bit more complicated than normal, as you must first apply some new schema elements to your Directory Server(s). To do so, you need to get the comm_dssetup 6.4 patch, patch the comm_dssetup script, and then run the patched comm_dssetup against your Directory Server(s) instances. In addition, if you are using the nsUniqueId attribute as your deployment's unique identifier, you'll want to change that to the new davUniqueId attribute. Consult the Upgrade Procedure for details, as well as DaBrain's blog, before forging ahead with this upgrade. • How can I connect to a Windows (7) running in VirtualBox from the network with RDP?

  I have a Windows7 guest running in a VirtualBox hosted by Precise (Ubuntu 12.04 LTS). In the settings of the virtual machine I have activated the 'Remote Display' (Enable Server) with default settings (server port, authentication method). The network of the guest is attached to NAT. I try to use Remmina to connect from the host to the guest. I tried 127.0.0.1, 127.0.0.2, the internal IP of Win7 (10. ...). Did not work so far. Do I have to active something and what on Win7 (home premium)? I would like to connect to the Win7 remote desktop from the local network. Can I stay in NAT mode (preferred due to our network policy), or do I have to go for 'bridged'? Thanks!

• Reasons for Pair Programming

  I've worked in a few shops where management has passed the idea of pair programming either to me or another manager/developer, and I can't get behind it at all. From a developer stand-point I can't find a reason why moving to this coding style would be beneficial, nor as a manager of a small team have I seen any benefit. I understand that it helps on basic syntax errors and can be helpful if you need to hash something out, but managers that are out of the programming loop seem to keep seeing it as a way of keeping their designers from going to Facebook or Reddit than as a design tool. As someone close to the development floor that apparently can't quite understand from a book tossed my way or a wiki page on the subject... from a high level management position, what are the benefits of Pair Programming when dealing with Scrum or Agile environments?

  I have a client and their traffic from social media reads thus: 80% from facebook 1% from Twitter This suggestsd they are not exploiting twitter at all and this was in my presentation but my boss took it out claiming twitter stats are under reported in google analytics. I can't substantiate this claim and wonder where she got this idea from. Can anyone shed light on this? Are my stats wrong and should I disregard these figures? but 80-1 seems like one hell of an under report! thanks c

• Is there an open source alternative to "Adobe Digital Editions"?

  For the moment I run Adobe Digital Editions under Wine to download ebooks burdened with ditigal restriction management. I only use it to open .acsm files supplied by ebook-shops, which contain authentication information required to download the actual DRM'ed ebook files, which I then transfer to my reader-device with calibre. My question is, if there exist open source alternatives to Adobe Digital Editions. They don't need much functionality. I just want to put the .acsm-file in and get the .epub out (no, I don't want to remove the drm, that'd be illegal afaik).

  Recently I have been having a lot of fun building a competition Slice of Kevin intended in part to teach people about Web Slices in New Zealand. The competition has been very successful and has created a loyal group of users. Since launch 2 months ago we have had 26,843 users of the slice. Each of those users have spent on average 4.1 hrs each engaged inside the web slice over that time.   I have a profile page with a URL like so: localhost/profile.php/?username=Bob I was wondering, if I had a separate <title> which changed according to the username, would they produce separate pages in the google search results? How do I tell Google to only use the username string or does it search within the title? On a similar note, how would I create a separate page with the username like so: localhost/bob instead of a query string like facebook does. Do that make a new file for each user?

  Given a public site with no logins: I let people post links to public Facebook profiles, and my site fetches the profile picture and displays it. Would it be ok if I just told people to post profiles of which they had the owner’s permission? Does such a statement exonerate me from copyright infringements and place the burden on the user?   My goal is to be able to create online apps and dynamic, database driven websites. For instance, if in the future I get the idea for the next Digg or Facebook, I want to be able to code it myself. To arrive there I think I have basically two paths: Path 1 Start at a basic level, learning C, then C++ for OOP, then algorithms and data structures, with the goal of getting a solid grasp of computer programming. Only then move to PHP/MySQL/HTTP and start working on practical programming projects. Path 2 Start directly with PHP/MySQL/HTTP and getting my hands dirty with practical projects right away. What would you guys recommend?

• Decent FREE Web Based FTP Alternatives?

  Like the subject mentions, I'm looking for a free FTP Alternative that's web based. What I need is the ability to grant people like our marketing team the ability to upload marketing images and instantly have those images show up in ourdomain.com/images/newimage.jpg. I have found plenty of excellent file sharing programs that are essentially drop box and sharepoint alternatives but have yet to find an FTP Alternative. Also ideally multiple account authentication would be great. If anyone is familiar with cPanel I'm essentially looking for their File Manager or something very similar to it (obviously stand alone and preferably free). Does anybody know if anything like this exists?
