• How can I install Java SDK on Windows 7 without messing up the system?

  I've installed Java SE Development Kit 1.6.0_31 32bit on Windows 7 64bit system, but this installation messed up my system, e.g. when I start Google Chrome I get error Your preferences can not be read Visual Studio 2010 after launching shows error that The Application Data folder for Visual Studio could not be created The shortcut to the Downloads folder in Windows Explorer no longer works. BTW this is pretty clean install, on other occasions after Java installation I had problems like this http://forums.techguy.org/windows-vista/808717-solved-c-windows-system32-config.html Is there a way to install Java SDK without messing up Windows 7? Or maybe this mess can be cleaned up after installation of Java, but how?

• Imap subfolders not shown in list command - perhaps acls misconfiguration

  My goal is to copy the whole folder structure with all mails from one imap account to another. The tool I am using for this is imapcopy (the java based version from code.google.com since the unix/linux tool packaged with debian doesn't support imaps). Now, there is one problem: The tool only copies the top-level folders and not the nested ones. To narrow down the problem I have downloaded the source code of imapcopy and debugged into the code. There I noticed that the folder.list() (which is mapped to the list "%" imap command) returns an empty list. But when I do a getFolder(<subfoldername>) I can access those subfolders. After reading some documentation about the features of imap I think that the problem might be some misconfigured ACLs which prohibit the listing of those folders but allow to read ad write to them. How should I check this ACLs? which tools do I need for this task?

• Why can't I use %USERPROFILE% in %PATH%?

  On my Windows 7 machine, using the System Properties Environment Variables tool, I try to add %USERPROFILE%\Bin to the system variable PATH. For some reason, that doesn't work, even though %SystemRoot%\system32 works fine. When I try to run commands from the console, files in my Bin folder are not found, even though files in the System32 folder are found. The only difference between UserProfile and SystemRoot that I can see is that the former is a user variable while the latter is a system variable. I i write echo %USERPROFILE%\Bin it yields c:\Users\zano, and if I add c:\Users\zano\Bin explicitly, everything work fine. What's the problem here?

• Will there be data loss for upgrade?

  I am planning to upgrade from 8.10 to 10.04. But I am wondering if there will be data loss during the upgrade? For example: Will the application that I have installed on 8.10 still be there after upgrade? Will the settings of the applications such as the bookmarks for Firefox and for Google Chrome be preserved? Will all the personal files under my home directory be preserved? Thus if you could address the underlying cause of the boot failure, I would very much appreciate it. I'm trying to replicate the environment in my ubuntu installation (where the home folder is on a separate partition) in order to run make uninstall. I'm using a live cd. How to mount a dir in one partition (sda2, mounted in ubuntu as the home folder) into a directory on another mounted partition (sda3)? I did chroot /mnt/sda2 but I don't know how to mount sda3 to /home, and my various attempts didn't work. As I am unfamiliar with chroot, my approach could be wrong, so it would be great if you could suggest what I should do, given my circumstances.

• Horrible time with WAMP, Joomla and Windows 7 (Permissions)

  I have WAMP and Joomla installed on Windows 7. I have made a virtual host outside of the www directory that houses a test joomla site. I have also made a joomla component that I want to install and test on this virtual host. I am having constant problems with permissions. I have given all users full access to the folder containing the files under the security Tab in Win7. It seems to me that when (Apache/PHP) creates a file it put restrictions on the permissions which does not allow it to delete or edit the file anymore so I have to manually go and delete the files when I want to uninstall my component. Also, I cannot install the .zip - instead I have to unzip manually to the tmp folder because when I upload the zip in the Joomla Installer I get the same permissions problems as above. How can I get rid of these issues once an for all?

• Debian SMB share having permission issues in windows 7

  Hi Everyone, I setup a Debian squeeze server with samba. I then shared my /media directory with the following configuration: [media] comment=Hard Drives read only = no locking = no path = /media guest ok = yes browsable = yes directory mask = 0777 When the drives are mapped in Windows 7, the user can write to all of the subdirectories of media (sdb1, sdc1, etc), but cannot write to any folders that they create themselves in the subdirectories of media. For example, if the user mapped /media/sdb1 to Z:, and then creates a folder Z:\test, the folder is created successfully, but no files can be written to Z:\test. If the user ssh's into the server, they have no problems writing to these directories. I have included the screenshots, in order, of what happens on Windows. Default install. I've tried to add shared folder from command line - it does not work. How to enable shared folders or raw disk access? I have created new Windows 8 64 bit template from scratch - I cannot use physical HDD either, and no SharedFolder option. I think this is something about security policy of remote server.

• How to open the built-in task manager when it's replaced by Process Explorer?

  I want to open the built-in task manager with Process Explorer's Replace Task Manager option checked. I've tried: Running taskmgr.exe from the run dialog. PE was opened instead. Creating a copy of taskmgr.exe in the same folder. Then run it. The built-in task manager was opened, but not working properly(its window was blank). Creating a symbolic link (using mklink) of taskmgr.exe in the same folder. Then run it. PE was opened instead. Is there any other method I can try? Thanks.

• Building a Student Storage server

  I work for a school district. I've been put in charge of building a storage server for students. A place for them to work off of from school and home. My challenge is getting this to work from home. At school they login, authenticate, and they get a mapped drive to their folder on the server (S:\fileserver\studentname). My question is how can I make this available to students at home? The server is running Windows Server 2003 R1. I've got PHP, Apache, and MySQL working together. My idea is to write a script that will "crawl" through the directory containing all of the student folders, then create an instance of every file and folder in a MySQL DB. Create a login page that will use LDAP for authentication, and once they login to the server from home, they get a page with folders a files tied to their username. Has anyone out there ever put something like this together??

  Possible Duplicate: How do you manage your knowledge base? What do you use for personal note taking to keep track of everything you learn? Are you always Googling or searching StackOverflow to answer the same questions? Or searching for and copying and pasting existing code? I feel like I have a poor memory, especially remembering things like syntax. Are there any knowledge management systems that would work well for a programming language or operating system? It would be great if there were a way to save everything I learn in an easy to search system. Does such a thing exist? Maybe you would be able to search by question (How to sort an array?, How to set static IP?), or by tag (sort, array, enumeration, iterator, IP). I know it would be easy to develop my own system, but I thought it would be great to learn what works for other people.

• Access to certain files but not others

  Hoping someone can help me as I have, thus far, been unable to solve the issue. I am running a media center utilizing Ubuntu 12.04. I was initially successful accessing media files from the desktop running Ubuntu via my Windows 7 laptop and Roku device. I started backing up a new batch of DVD's I had (into MKV files, like everything else in my media folders) and noticed I cannot access the new files from either the Roku or the laptop. I have not changed any settings in the media folder and verified the shared permissions. The parent folder (Media) is shared (with permission flow-down) while the subfolders (Movies, TV Shows, Music) are not. I have changed the permissions on this to include shared when the access problem arose but with no success. I can only access the original files uploaded an not new files added. Any suggestions???   I want Windows 7 to synchronize two folders in real time (maybe running a service that monitors a folder)? Basically I want to monitor a folder and synchronize each change (new files, changed files, deleted files) to another drive. It has to be in real time, so it gets synchronized instantly when a change happens. A one-direction synchronisation is enough. I tried Microsofts SyncToy, but it does only syncing by hand or scheduled. Can this be achieved with Windows 7 itself or does anyone know a freeware application for this?

• Java EE @ NFJS Central Iowa Software Symposium Des Moines

  As some of you may be aware I recently joined the well-respected US based No Fluff Just Stuff (NFJS) Tour. The NFJS Central Iowa Software Symposium was held August 8 - 10 in Des Moines. The Des Moines show is one of the smaller ones but still was good overall. It is one of the few events of it's kind that take place this part the country so it is extremely important. I had five talks total over two days, more or less back-to-back. I had decent attendance for all my sessions and had many of the same folks staying for multiple sessions which is always a very good sign. I did talks on Java EE 7/Java EE 8, WebSocket, the Cargo Tracker Java EE Blue Prints, JavaScript + Java EE and NoSQL + Java EE. • messed System Files on Mac PPC

  My buddy deleted her System folder from her PPC Mac wanting to get that space for something else. She copied it first in another drive (she had partitioned disk).She haven't emptied the Trash Bin yet. The screen just froze right after she moved the folder to Trash. We tried to use the install disk but even if we try Power-C on booting,it would try to continue,display the apple logo page then quickly follow it with black screen filled with dumps of hex codes and "We are hanging here..." We have a Windows-based PC that we tried to connect using ethernet cable but we can't find her computer from there. What should we do now???

• Windows 7 Desktop slideshow

  I have my windows 7 (Home Professional if it matters) set to automatically change the background every 20 minutes with the source of the slideshow as a folder in the Pictures library. Recently, the slideshow has not been functioning. The pictures do not change while the computer is on; they only seem to change when it is shut down (i.e. there is a different desktop on each boot), or about 50% of the time when waking the computer from hibernation. I've changed the time settings, the folder location on the drive, and made sure to disable all programs that tweak the desktop with no luck. Any thoughts?

• Private downloads [on hold]

  I am setting up a personal website and I would like to be able to share certain files with friends (e.g. photo albums or documents). Of course, each of the files should only be accessible to certain people, for example with a password or a private address. I would like to have a simple system, easy to maintain. I'm quite sure that Wordpress would let me know do something but keeping a Wordpress installation just for sharing a few files per month seems too much work. I am thinking of using the Apache capabilities for folder or file password protecting. Is this the best idea? Or would it be better just to block the directory navigation so that only people with the full path for each of the files can download them? Thanks!

  NetBeans 7.1 RC 1 is here. Grab it from the usual place! As previously discussed, NetBeans 7.1 has full JavaFX 2.0 support but also a lot in store for Java EE and Web developers (CDI in particular is very neat). One of my personal favorite feature is that Deploy on Save is now set by default on Maven projects. Maybe one important part that didn't get proper coverage so far is CSS 3 support, an important feature which can be used from both Java EE and PHP but also from JavaFX. Java Downloads of NetBeans 7.1 start at 69 MB and a 166 MB download will get you everything you need to start coding right away with Java EE - a great tool and a fully integrated runtime (GlassFish 3.1.1). You really need to be not using Maven, not be interested in recent standards (Java EE 6, Java SE 7, Java FX 2.0, ...) and like to hand-craft assemble your IDE to afford ignoring NetBeans nowadays.

• How to setup complete file access and control on a network

  I have a media server running ubuntu 12.04 and I want it setup so that any PC on the network (windows etc) has complete access to all files, folders etc with read, write, edit, copy to, copy from permissions. No need for security (IE no password or user name, just select it on the network and start editing). I have samba installed and personal file sharing is enabled but my windows PC cannot see it on the network. I already set up another server as I described but unfortunately I can't remember how or where I found the guides for it. Any on know of a guide that covers what I want?
