  Mit einer Veranstaltung zum Thema ""Virtualisierung mit LDOMs in der Praxis" beginnen wir in der Oracle Geschäftstelle Stuttgart eine Veranstaltungsreihe Red Hardware Cafe rund um Themen aus der Praxis des Einsatzes von Oracle Hardware Produkten.  Auf der technischen Ebene (z.B. • How do I properly set up and secure a production LAMP Server?

  It's very hard to find comprehensive information on this subject. Either I found short tutorials on how you perform the installation, as simple as "apt-get install apache2", or outdated tutorials. So I was hoping I could get some professional information from my fellow members of the Ubuntu community :D I have performed a normal Ubuntu Server 11.04 with LAMP, SAMBA and SSH installed through the system installation. But I'm having some trouble setting up virtual hosts and to make the system secure enough to expose the server to the web. I've somewhat followed this tutorial this far. I have 3 sites in /etc/apache2/sites-available which all looks like this except for different site names: <VirtualHost example.com> ServerAdmin webmaster@localhost ServerAlias www.edunder.se DocumentRoot /var/www/sites/example CustomLog /var/log/apache2/www.example.com-access.log combined </VirtualHost> And I have enabled them with the command a2ensite so I have symbolic links in /etc/apache2/sites-enabled. My /etc/hosts file has these lines: 127.0.0.1 localhost 127.0.1.1 Ubuntu.lan Ubuntu 127.0.0.1 localhost.localdomain localhost example.com www.example.com 127.0.0.1 localhost.localdomain localhost example2.com www.example2.com 127.0.0.1 localhost.localdomain localhost example3.com www.example3.com And I can only access one of them from the browser (I have lynx installed on the server for testing purposes) so I guess I haven't set them up properly :) How should I proceed to get a secure and proper setup? I also use MySQL and I think that this tutorial will be enough to set up SSH securely. Please help me understanding Apache configuration better since I'm new to setting up my own server (I've only run XAMPP earlier) and please advise regarding how I should setup a firewall as well :D

• Hide email adress with JavaScript

• Open source clone for Starcraft

  Two questions about a SC:Broodwar clone. Is there one yet? How likely is legal pursuit? Since almost all games I usually play now have an FOS alternative from alpha to way polished, I was wondering why can't I find one for SC, one of the biggest titans of the gaming community? So my first question is, is there a game that was made with the intention to emulate SC? Is it that I didn't look well enough? Could it really be that no one tackled what seems like a small effort compared to the creation of a game engine like Spring or games like Rigs of Rod or Minetest? And since SC is not being maintained at all shouldn't the incentive to see a bug free modable balanced version huge? What am I not getting here? In the event that there is none, is it a legal problem? Could it be that people expect Blizzard to release sources themselves? Or that developers don't see the point in having SC mechanics without the patented lore and aesthetics? And the trickier question, if I were to make SC an open source game, a total clone of it for the purposes of maintenance, modability, etc. Would Blizzard really sue a team of developer fans that just do them a favour knowing they don't lose any money from Korea broadcasts? Or would they do it not to set precedents. So thanks for reading all that, hope I'm not the only one to think it's weird that no one talks about it. See you.

• Can I re-license Academic Free License code under 2-Clause BSD / ITC?

  I want to fork a piece of code licensed under the Academic Free License. For the project, it would be preferable to re-license it under the ISC License or the 2-Clause BSD license, which are equivalent. I understand that the AFL grants me things such as limitation of liability, but licensing consistency is much more important to the project, especially since we're talking about just 800 lines of code, a quarter of which I've modified in some way. And it's very important for me to give these changes back to the community, given the fact that this is software relevant to security - I need the public scrutiny that I'll get by creating a public fork. In short: At the top of the file I want to say this, or something like it: # Licensed under the Academic Free License, version 3 # Copyright (C) 2009 Original Author # Licensed under the ISC License # Copyright (C) 2012 Stefano Palazzo # Copyright (C) 2012 Company Am I allowed to do this? My research so far indicates that it's not clear whether the AFL is GPL-Compatible, and I can't really understand any of the stuff concerning re-licensing to other permissive licenses. As a stop gap, I would also be okay with re-licensing under the GPL, however: I can find no consensus (though I can find disagreement) on whether this is allowed at all, and I don't want to risk it, of course. He actually makes some interesting points, but you'd basically have to ship Richard Dawkins off to Utah, if you wanted to go further out of your way to aggravate your audience. It does give an engaging account of running a large tech comms project, and raise some questions about how we propose to understand a world where increasing amounts of our stuff gets done by increasingly many increasingly complicated tissues of APIs. • How to prevent 2D camera rotation if it would violate the bounds of the camera?

  I'm working on a Camera class and I have a rectangle field named Bounds that determines the bounds of the camera. I have it working for zooming and moving the camera so that the camera cannot exit its bounds. However, I'm a bit confused on how to do the same for rotation. Currently I allow rotating of the camera's Z-axis. However, if sufficiently zoomed out, upon rotating the camera, areas of the screen outside the camera's bounds can be shown. I'd like to deny the rotation assuming it meant that the newly rotated camera would expose areas outside the camera's bounds, but I'm not quite sure how. I'm still new to Matrix and Vector math and I'm not quite sure how to model if the newly rotated camera sees outside of its bounds, undo the rotation. Here's an image showing the problem: http://i.stack.imgur.com/NqprC.png The red is out of bounds and as a result, the camera should never be allowed to rotate itself like this. This seems like it would be a problem with all rotated values, but this is not the case when the camera is zoomed in enough. Here are the current member variables for the Camera class: private Vector2 _position = Vector2.Zero; private Vector2 _origin = Vector2.Zero; private Rectangle? _bounds = Rectangle.Empty; private float _rotation = 0.0f; private float _zoom = 1.0f; Is this possible to do? If so, could someone give me some guidance on how to accomplish this? Thanks. EDIT: I forgot to mention I am using a transformation matrix style camera that I input in to SpriteBatch.Begin. I am using the same transformation matrix from this tutorial.

• SQLAuthority News – My Evaluation of Singapore SharePoint Conference

  Earlier this year I presented at SQLAuthority News – Presenting at South East Asia SharePoint Conference – Oct 26, 27, 2010 – Singapore. I felt very good to be presenting at Singapore as SharePoint Conference as I was the only SQL Speaker at the event. The event was filled with SharePoint enthusiasts and lots of other experts from all around the globe. The event was one of the best organized event, I attended in subcontinent. I just received my feedback score of the event. I was very much surprised and stunned. My ratting are very high as well, my demo were considered as one of the best demo of the whole event. I am not sure how much feedback I can share with community as organizer did not specify to me but I am very certain that I am allowed to share my own feedback. Speaker – 4.39 (best score 4.74, average 3.84) Contents – 4.37 (best score 4.39, average 3.65) Demo – 4.48 (best score, 4.48, average 3.61) I am very glad that all of my efforts to do presentations at SharePoint Conference are finally paid up. • New database profiling support in ANTS Performance Profiler

  In May last year, the ANTS Performance Profiler team added the ability to profile database requests your application makes to SQL Server or Oracle. The really cool thing is that you’re shown those requests in the application’s call tree, so you can see what .NET code caused those queries to run. It’s particularly helpful if you’re using an ORM which automagically generates and runs queries for you, but which doesn’t necessarily do it in the most efficient way possible. Now by popular demand, we’ve added support for profiling MySQL (or MariaDB) and PostgreSQL, so you can see queries run against those databases too. Some of you have also said that you’re using the Devart dotConnect data providers instead of the native .NET ones, so we’ve added support for those drivers too. Hope it helps! • SSIS Dashboard v0.4

  Following the post on SSISDB script on Gist, I’ve been working on a HTML5 SSIS Dashboard, in order to have a nice looking, user friendly and, most of all, useful, SSIS Dashboard. Since this is a “spare-time” project, I’ve decided to develop it using Python since it’s THE data language (R aside), it’s a beautiful & powerful, well established and well documented and with a rich ecosystem around. Plus it has full support in Visual Studio, through the amazing Python Tools For Visual Studio plugin, I decided also to use Flask, a very good micro-framework to create websites, and use the SB Admin 2.0 Bootstrap admin template, since I’m all but a Web Designer. The result is here: https://github.com/yorek/ssis-dashboard and I can say I’m pretty satisfied with the work done so far (I’ve worked on it for probably less than 24 hours). Though there’s some features I’d like to add in t future (historical execution time, some charts, connection with AzureML to do prediction on expected execution times) it’s already usable. Of course I’ve tested it only on my development machine, so check twice before putting it in production but, give the fact that, virtually, there is not installation needed (you only need to install Python), and that all queries are based on standard SSISDB objects, I expect no big problems. If you want to test, contribute and/or give feedback please fell free to do it…I would really love to see this little project become a community project! Enjoy!

• Future of WPF and free controls ? [closed]

  I am willing to work on a personal project that I would like to release publicly. I am working with Silverlight and have experience with XAML, as it is my full-time job. It is enjoyably for me to create UIs in Blend and XAML. I am also a big fan of C# language. I don't know what I would do without LINQ now. Anyways, I was looking at using WPF for my personal project. It seems that a lot of the controls out on the web are pay for items. The only place I have found to have a significant number of free controls is the WPF extended framework on codeplex. I want to make a financial application and need a powerful datagrid type of control that will allow me to enter transaction data. I haven't found such control for free in the net. It doesn't seem like there is much free community libraries/controls out there for Microsoft products. So, I was wondering if WPF would be the right way for me to go. I couldn't find any information on WPF usage in Windows 8, which coming very soon. I don't know Microsoft's plans for this technology. Would it be a better idea to use something different for the UI instead of WPF?

• Introducing Elke Phelps, Guest Author

  I'm very pleased to welcome Elke Phelps as a new contributor to this blog.  Elke needs little introduction to most long-time readers, as she's been a pillar of the E-Business Suite sysadmin community for years.  What's special about this announcement is that Elke is joining this blog's panel of guest authors as a member of my Product Management team in the Oracle E-Business Suite Applications Technology Group.  I am thrilled to have her as part of my team and look forward to her contributions to this blog. Here's a short bio: Elke is a Product Manager in the Oracle E-Business Suite Applications Technology Group.  She joined Oracle in 2011 after having been an Oracle customer and Oracle Technologist (Oracle Database Administrator, Oracle Applications DBA, Technical Architect and Technical Manager of an Oracle Applications DBA Team) since 1993. Elke is the lead author of the Oracle Applications DBA Field Guide (Apress 2006) and Oracle R12 Applications DBA Field Guide (Coqui Tech and Press 2010).  Elke is also the founder of the Oracle Applications User Group (OAUG) E-Business Suite Applications Technology Special Interest Group (SIG) and served as President of the SIG from February 2005 - August 2011.  Elke has been a speaker at Oracle OpenWorld and Collaborate since 2004.  Prior to joining Oracle, Elke was designated an Oracle ACE (2007) and Oracle ACE Director (2009).   Elke has a Computer Science Degree and a Masters of Business Administration from the University of Oklahoma.  In her spare time, Elke enjoys traveling especially to Europe, Puerto Rico and the amazing US National Parks.  Elke also enjoys hiking, antiquing, gardening and cooking.

• Ubuntu won't boot after initializing the Build Environment for Android

  My laptop worked perfectly util I initialized the build environment for Android. The GUI won't start. It looks like some kinds of graphics card problems. I tried to fix it but after trying a lot of solutions on the internet nothing worked. (I only know basic linux stuffs.) I've already reinstalled the OS. However, I still want to build the Android from source. Any idea what might cause the problem? any workaround? • How do I boot into console mode (redux)

  I'm running Ubuntu 12.04. This question was asked some time ago How do I disable the boot splash screen? but the answers didn't work for me. The standard way to boot into console mode used to be to edit /etc/default/grub and set GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="text" This worked fine until I ran the fix proposed in https://help.ubuntu.com/community/SoundTroubleshootingProcedure in order to get sound to work. Since then, I have disabled the boot-splash-screen, but I can avoid what I presume is the lightdm login prompt screen. All I want to do is disable this gui and be prompted with a console login prompt. (Shouldnt be so hard should it???) I read in three 33416 mentioned above that there was a bug in lightdm (it wasn't recognizing "text" properly as an option for GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT.) But this discussion happened more than a year ago, and it's surely been fixed. Yet my lightdm is uptodate (so I'm told when I try to update it with apt-get). As suggested in one of the above, I tried sudo update-rc.d -f lightdm remove which resulted in a hung machine. I managed to recover using recovery mode, but now I still get the gui again. Another suggestion is to edit /etc/init/lightdm.override. I've done this and set it to "manual" as suggested, but lightdm simply ignores this. Could somebody suggest how to proceed please? • I don't know C. And why should I learn it?

  My first programming language was PHP (gasp). After that I started working with JavaScript. I've recently done work in C#. I've never once looked at low or mid level languages like C. The general consensus in the programming-community-at-large is that "a programmer who hasn't learned something like C, frankly, just can't handle programming concepts like pointers, data types, passing values by reference, etc." I do not agree. I argue that: Because high level languages are easily accessible, more "non-programmers" dive in and make a mess, and In order to really get anything done in a high level language, one needs to understand the same similar concepts that most proponents of "learn-low-level-first" evangelize about. Some people need to know C. Those people have jobs that require them to write low to mid-level code. I'm sure C is awesome. I'm sure there are a few bad programmers who know C. My question is, why the bias? As a good, honest, hungry programmer, if I had to learn C (for some unforeseen reason), I would learn C. Considering the multitude of languages out there, shouldn't good programmers focus on learning what advances us? Shouldn't we learn what interests us? Should we not utilize our finite time moving forward? Why do some programmers disagree with this? I believe that striving for excellence in what you do is the fundamental deterministic trait between good programmers and bad ones. Does anyone have any real world examples of how something written in a high level language--say Java, Pascal, PHP, or Javascript--truely benefitted from a prior knowledge of C? Examples would be most appreciated. (revised to better coincide with the six guidelines.)

• Identity Propagation for Web Service - 11g

  I came across this post from Beimond on how to do identity propagation using OWSM.As I have mentioned in the past here, here and here - Beimond has a number of excellent posts on OWSM. However I found one part of his comment puzzling. I quote: "OWSM allows you to pass on the identity of the authenticated user to your OWSM protected web service ( thanks to OPSS ), this username can then be used by your service. This will work on one or between different WebLogic domains. Off course when you don't want to use OWSM you can always use Oracle Access Manager OAM which can do the same." The sentence in red highlights the issue i find puzzling. In fact I just discussed this particular topic recently here. So let me try and clarify on a few points: a) OAM is used for Web SSO. b) OWSM is used for securing Web Services. You cannot do identity propagation using OAM for Web Services. c) You use SAML to do identity propagation across Web Services. OAM also supports SAML - but that is the browser profile of SAML relevant in the context of Web SSO and is not related to the SAML Token Profile defined as part of the WS-Security spec.

  Few months ago I am looking for a editor to doing simply edit on html,css,javascript.  Before it I tried notepad++ which is quite awesome to do all works I want to get done with him.  I choose 2 editor on my list. first is sublime text and second is phpstorm. both are cross-plateform. I tried both and both is working fine. I finally go with sublime text 2.   Here is the reason why sublime text 2 is awesome. phpstorm and sublime text 2 both is licensed  software. In sublime text 2 you can use it for unlimited time when phpstorm is available for 30 days only. Sublime text 2 is very memory efficient and lightweight software this is first thing people found best in sublime text 2. in phpstorm problem for me is sometime it’s goes unresponsive when I tried html5 boilerplate. sublime text 2 is never hang depend on memory size of project compare to phpstorm. in Sublime text 2 you can got better speed at coding after learning some shortcut and basic thing applied specially sublime text 2. Sublime text 2 come with distraction free mode when phpstorm have nothing with full-screen. Sublime text 2 support almost every language. I have seen many people in community who has move from their PHP IDE to sublime text 2. You can use LESS and coffeescript in it. There are many kind of customization out in github regarding sublime text 2.   In past I also have also tried webmatrix. the latest version of webmatrix have nothing good as sublime text 2.
