• Looking for pros/cons of using GWT or JSF

  I'm a long time Java developer who has been building UI with Adobe Flex for the past few years. I'm looking to broaden my repertoire with a RIA technology that runs in a plain-old browser, no plug-ins required. I've read a lot about GWT but don't know much about JSF, especially given the varying implementations. Below are some criteria that are important to me as a developer. I'm hoping that the community might be able to tell me about the strengths and weaknesses of GWT and JSF in each: Layout: is it declarative, programmatic or a mix of both? Control library: how rich is the available control library? How easy is it to extend or write custom controls that "play nice" with the built-ins? Javascript: how much of it do I need to write in order to be successful with the framework? Cross-browser: assuming I'm not writing a lot of my own HTML and JS, do the frameworks function equally well in all modern browsers? Tooling: is a rapid edit/refresh cycle available? How easy is it to debug the client and server code? Bookmarking / Browser Navigation: this is a common problem in Flex; does the framework play nicely with these? I would love to hear any other important pros / cons I might not have covered. Thanks!

• How can I overlay images over one another in Java?

  So I have been posting all over and have yet to get a solid answer: I have created an image resizing class, with a crop method. The cropping works great. The issue that I am having is the background color that I specify in the drawImage function of Graphics is not working correctly. It defaults to black as the background regardless of what I supply (in this case Color.WHITE). Also, the overlaying image or top most image (comes from a file) is being inverted (I think it is) or otherwise discolored. Just so you can conceptualize this a little bit better, I am taking a jpeg and overlaying it on top of a new BufferedImage, the new buffered image's background is not being set. • Jquery and PHP rating function problem

  I know that I was already posted similar question but I just can't find the answer and figure it out how to solve this problem. I'm trying to customize Jquery Star Rating plugin (link text) but I do not know what to do to show the message based on response of PHP script. Jquery script successfully send rating data to PHP scripts that query the database and based on that echo message of proper or improper rating. What should I add to an existing JS code so I can get echo from PHP and base on that write a message on some DIV beside rating star? • Pthread-ed filetransfer application crash

  I am developing a file transfer application and am using pthreads on the receiver side for receiving multiple files. The function which is passed to pthreads calls the following function and at the end of this function I get a SIGABRT error and stack-smashing error appears on the terminal.   Hello, I am writing a class that opens an AudioQueue and analyzes its characteristics, and then under certain conditions can begin or end writing out a file from that AudioQueue that is already instantiated. • How do I correctly decode unicode parameters passed to a servlet

If in SERVLET I do: Writer writer = response.getWriter(); writer.write(request.getParameter("external_title")); I get Yahoo!â„¢ in the browser. If I manually switch the browser character encoding to UTF-8, it changes to Yahoo!TM (which is what I want). So I figured the encoding I was sending to the browser was wrong (it was Content-type: text/html; charset=ISO-8859-1). I changed SERVLET to: response.setContentType("text/html; charset=utf-8"); Writer writer = response.getWriter(); writer.write(request.getParameter("external_title")); Now the browser character encoding is UTF-8, but it outputs Yahoo!â?¢ and I can't get the browser to render the correct character at all. My question is: is there some combination of Content-type and/or new String(request.getParameter("external_title").getBytes(), "UTF-8"); and/or something else that will result in Yahoo!TM appearing in the SERVLET output?

• Zend_Auth and database session SaveHandler

  I have created Zend_Auth adapter implementing Zend_Auth_Adapter_Interface (similar to Pádraic's adapter) and created simple ACL plugin. Everything works fine with default session handler. So far, so good. As a next step I have created custom Session SaveHandler to persist session data in the database. My implementation is very similar to this one from parables-demo. Seems that everything is working fine. Session data are properly saved to the database, session objects are serialized, but authentication does not work when I enable this custom SaveHandler. I have debugged the authentication and all works fine up till the next request, when the authentication data are lost. I suspected, that is has something to do with the fact, that I use $adapter->write($object) instead $adapter->write($string), but the same happens with strings. I'm bootstrapping Zend_Application_Resource_Session in the first Bootstrap method, as early as possible. Does Zend_Auth need any extra configuration to persist data in the database? Why the authentity is being lost?

• How to create closed areas (convex polygons) from set of line segments ?

  The following problem is in 2D, so some simplifications can be made when suggesting answers. I need to create closed areas (defined either by line segments or just set of points - convex polygon) from a set of points/line segments. Basically I used Voronoi to generate "roads". Then I changed some of the data. Now I need a way to loop through that data (which is still line segments but doesn't comply with Voronoi anymore) and generate "neigbourhoods" that are bordered with the "roads". I looked at some graph diagrams and shortest path theories, but I could not figure it out. Logically it could be done by starting at left edge from one point, finding the way back to that point using the shortest path with available lines (using only clockwise directions). Then mark this line set down and remove from the data. Then you can repeat the same process and get all the areas like that. I tried to implement that but it did not get me anywhere as I could not figure out a way to write a C++ code that could do that. Problem was with choosing the most counterclockwise line from available lines from a specific point. All angle based math I did gave wrong answers because the way sin/cos are implemented in c++. So to summarize - if you can help me with a totally new approach to the problem its good, if not could you help me find a way to write the part of the code that finds the shortest clockwise path back to the beginning point using the line segment set as paths back. The master Azure SQL table structure columns are approximated to [UserId, col1, col2, ... , col N, beingProcessed, lastTimeProcessed ] beingProcessed is boolean and lastTimeProcessed is DateTime. • How do I retrieve an automated report and save it to a database?

  I've got a web server that will take scripts in Python, PHP or Perl. I don't know much about any of those languages, but of the three, Python seems the least scary. It has a MySql database set up, and I know enough SQL to manage it and write queries for it. I also have a program that I want to add automated error reporting to. Something goes wrong, it sends a bug report to my server. What I don't know how to do is write a Python script that will sit on the web server and, when my program sends in a bug report, do the following: Receive the bug report. Parse it out into sections. Insert it into the database. Have the server send me an email. From what little I understand, this seems like it shouldn't be too difficult if I only knew what I was doing. Could someone point me to a site that explains the basic principles I'd need to create a script like this?

  I am trying to write a Spider Solitaire player as an exercise in learning Clojure. I am trying to figure out how to deal the cards. I have created (with the help of stackoverflow), a shuffled sequence of 104 cards from two standard decks. Each card is represented as a (defstruct card :rank :suit :face-up) The tableau for Spider will be represented as follows: (defstruct tableau :stacks :complete) where :stacks is a vector of card vectors, 4 of which contain 5 cards face down and 1 card face up, and 6 of which contain 4 cards face down and 1 card face up, for a total of 54 cards, and :complete is an (initially) empty vector of completed sets of ace-king (represented as, for example, king-hearts, for printing purposes). The remainder of the undealt deck should be saved in a ref (def deck (ref seq)) During the game, a tableau may contain, for example: (struct-map tableau :stacks [[AH 2C KS ...] [6D QH JS ...] ... ] :complete [KC KS]) where "AH" is a card containing {:rank :ace :suit :hearts :face-up false}, etc. How can I write a function to deal the stacks and then save the remainder in the ref?

• Python's asyncore to periodically send data using a variable timeout. Is there a better way?

  I wanted to write a server that a client could connect to and receive periodic updates without having to poll. The problem I have experienced with asyncore is that if you do not return true when dispatcher.writable() is called, you have to wait until after the asyncore.loop has timed out (default is 30s). The two ways I have tried to work around this is 1) reduce timeout to a low value or 2) query connections for when they will next update and generate an adequate timeout value. However if you refer to 'Select Law' in 'man 2 select_tut', it states, "You should always try to use select() without a timeout." Is there a better way to do this? Twisted maybe? I wanted to try and avoid extra threads. Probably on POST I should not render <div> around form in partial view or render the div without id. What else can I do in this situation? I was thinking that maybe I should write a helper, something like Ajax.DivBeginForm, which will render form inside div on GET and hide the div on POST. Can somebody provide a good advice how to write such helper (Ajax.DivBeginForm)? I'd like it to work with using keyword: <% using (Ajax.DivBeginForm(new AjaxOptions { UpdateTargetId = "myId" })) { ... }%>

• PHP/MySQL - Working with two databases, one shared and one local to an instance of application

  The situation: Using a off-the-shelf PHP application, I have to add in a new module for extra functionality. Today, it is made known that eventually four different instances of the application are to be deployed, but the data from the new functionality is to be shared among those 4 instances. Each instance should still have their own database for users, content and etc. So the data for the new functionality goes into a 'shared' database. The data for the application (user login, content, uploads) go into a 'local' database To make things more complex, the new module I am writing will fetch data from the local DB and the shared DB at the same time. A re-write of the base application will take too long. I only have control over the new module which I am writing. The ideal solution: Is there a way to encapsulate 2 databases into one name using MySQL? I do not wish to switch DB connections or specifically name the DB to query from inside my SQL statements. The application uses a DB wrapper, so I am able to change it somehow so I can invisibly attempt to read/write to two different DB. What is the best way to handle this problem?

• Some clarification needed about synchronous versus asynchronous asio operations

  As far as I know, the main difference between synchronous and asynchronous operations. I.e. write() or read() vs async_write() and async_read() is that the former, don't return until the operation finish -or error-, and the last ones, returns inmediately. Due the fact that the asynchronous operations are controlled by an io_service.run() that does not finish until the controlled operations has finalized. It seems to me that in sequencial operations as those involved in TCP/IP connections with protocols such as POP3, in which the operaton is a sequence such as: C: <connect> S: Ok. C: User... S: Ok. C: Password S: Ok. C: Command S: answer C: Command S: answer ... C: bye S: <close> The difference between synchronous/asynchronous opperatons does not make much sense. Of course, in both operations there is allways the risk that the program flow stops indefinitely by some circunstance -there the use of timers-, but I would like know some more authorized opinions in this matter. I must admit that the question is rather ill-defined, but I like hear some advices about when use one or other, because I've problems in debugging with MS Visual Studio, asynchronous SSL operations in a POP3 client in wich I'm working now -about some of who surely I would write here soon-, and sometimes think that perhaps is a bad idea use asynchronous in this. Not to say that I'm an absolute newbie with this librarys, that additionally to the difficult with the idioma, and some obscure concepts in the STL, must suffer the brevity of the asio documentation.

• Logging exceptions to database in NServiceBus

  If an exception occurs in my MessageHandler I want to write the exception details to my database. How do I do this? Obviously, I cant just catch the exception, write to database, and rethrow it since NSB rollbacks all changes. (IsTransactional is set to true) I tried adding logging functionality in a seperate handler, which I caledl using SendLocal if an exception occured, but this does not work: public void Handle(MessageItem message) { try { DoWork(); } catch(Exception exc) { Bus.SendLocal(new ExceptionMessage(exc.Message)); throw; } } I also tried using Log4Net with a custom appender, but this also rolled back. • Need Help finding an appropriate task asignment algoritm for a collage project involving coordinatin

  Hello. I am a long time lurker here and have found over time many answers regarding jquery and web development topics so I decided to ask a question of my own. This time I have to create a c++ project for collage which should help manage the workflow of a company providing all kinds of services through in the field teams. The ideas I have so far are: client-server application; the server is a dispatcher where all the orders from clients get and the clients are mobile devices (PDAs) each team in the field having one a order from a client is a task. Each task is made up of a series of subtasks. You have a database with estimations on how long a task should take to complete you also know what tasks or subtasks each team on the field can perform based on what kind of specialists made up the team (not going to complicate the problem by adding needed materials, it is considered that if a member of a team can perform a subtask he has the stuff needed) Now knowing these factors, what would a good task assignment algorithm be? The criteria is: how many tasks can a team do, how many tasks they have in the queue, it could also be location, how far away are they from the place but I don't think I can implement that.. It needs to be efficient and also to adapt quickly is the human dispatcher manually assigns a task. Any help or leads would be really appreciated. Also I'm not 100% sure in the idea so if you have another way you would go about creating such an application please share, even if it just a quick outline. I have to write a theoretical part too so even if the ideas are far more complex that what i outlined that would be ok ; I'd write those and implement what I can.

Here I can read your thoughts: "Write custom model binder, man". I do. However, the question is How to avoid magic strings within custom model binder? • Ignore folders with certain filetypes

  I'm trying in vain to rewrite my old Powershell script found here - "$_.extension -eq" not working as intended? - for Python.I have no Python experience or knowledge and my 'script' is a mess but it mostly works. The only thing missing is that I would like to be able to ignore folders which don't contain 'mp3s', or whichever filetype I specify. Here is what I have so far - import os, os.path, fnmatch path = raw_input("Path : ") for filename in os.listdir(path): if os.path.isdir(filename): os.chdir(filename) j = os.path.abspath(os.getcwd()) mp3s = fnmatch.filter(os.listdir(j), '*.txt') if mp3s: target = open("pls.m3u", 'w') for filename in mp3s: target.write(filename) target.write("\n") os.chdir(path) All I would like to be able to do (if possible) is that when the script is looping through the folders that it ignores those which do NOT contain 'mp3s', and removes the 'pls.m3u'. I could only get the script to work properly if I created the 'pls.m3u' by default. The problem is that that creates a lot of empty 'pls.m3u' files in folders which contain only '.jpg' files for example. You get the idea. I'm sure this script is blasphemous to Python users but any help would be greatly appreciated.
