Creating models in 3ds max and exporting as .x for XNA

I have created a few models in 3DS max which contains textures, geometry and animations . .however .fbx doesnt really support textures.. So im planning to use .x format.. I have seen a few converters in pandasoft but once i unzip the file and place the .dle file in the plugins folder of 3D max gives an error saying failed to initialize.. Is there any way to convert my .max models into .x format ? ? I dont know blender so that isnt an option. . I'm currently using 3ds max 2013 After adding the .3DS object content importer. . i get the following error:

Does Hauppauge WinTV HVR-900 (r2) [USB ID 2040:6502] work with ubuntu 12.04 LTS?

I have this DVB+Analog usb tv tuner Hauppauge WinTV HVR-900 (r2) [USB ID 2040:6502]. This used to work under ubuntu 10.04 LTS. But in 12.04 there seems to be a problem. I have linux-firmware-nonfree and ivtv-utils installed. I am running Ubuntu 12.04.1 LTS 64 bit with all updates installed and the default unity environment. When I run mplayer tv:// -tv driver=v4l2:device=/dev/video1:input=1:norm=PAL I get a solid green screen and no picture. Here input 1 is the composite input of the card. Can't convert .iso to .img on iMac G5

So I'm trying to create a bootable USB stick in order to install Ubuntu 12.04.1 on my iMac G5 running Mac OS X 10.4.11 but whenever I try to convert the downloaded .iso file into a .img, the .img.dmg file that the terminal creates just suddenly dissapears no matter where I select the output file to be. I tried hdiutil convert -format UDRW -o /path/to/target.img /path/to/ubuntu.iso and also hdiutil convert /path/to/ubuntu.iso -format UDRW -o /path/to/target.img but the exact same thing happens. I tried becoming root before I do all of this with sudo su but I still get the same results. The totally weird thing is that it works perfectly with Ubuntu Minimal .iso files. Could it be that the .iso I downloaded is corrupt?

How can I play AMR files in Firefox on Ubuntu?

I use Evernote to keep voice and text notes. Unfortunately, I've just discovered that I can't take full advantage of the cloud storage capabilities of Evernote, because support for Android's native sound file format, AMR, is deficient in Ubuntu. When I view my voice notes in Firefox in Ubuntu, I get a "missing plugin" error. The problem is discussed on the Evernote forums, but the solutions offered there are really lacking. They all involve saving and converting files, which seems like an unreasonable amount of fiddling. Surely an AMR file is just a sound file, and surely Ubuntu could (and should) have a way of playing it? There is some suggestion that Media Player can play AMR format, and I thought there was a Media Player plugin for Firefox. But I can not find any specifics. How can I get Ubuntu to play AMR file directly in Firefox in Ubuntu?

The Direct I/O feature has been available for LDoms customers since LDoms2.0. Apart from the latest SR-IOV feature in LDoms2.2, it is worth noting a few enhancements to the Direct I/O feature. These are: Support for Metis-Q and Metis-E cards. These cards are highly requested for support and are worth mentioning because they are the only combo cards containing both FibreChannel and Ethernet in the same card. With this support, a customer can have both SAN storage and network access with just one card and one PCIe slot assigned to a logical domain. This reduces cost and helps when there are less number of slots in a given platform. The following are the part numbers for these cards. Interpreting Munin graphs showing available entropy and MySQL slow queries in sync

We're experiencing performance issues on our website, and after reviewing our munin graphs, the only metrics we've found in sync are Available entropy and MySQL slow queries, with the latter influenced by our number of logged in users: Based on the wikipedia entropy page, my understanding is that entropy is the amount of randomness (here measured in bytes) that the system can use for various tasks, mainly cryptography and functions that require random input. Since the peaks in available entropy and MySQL slow queries are occurring in sync and at regular interval, that the number of MySQL slow queries is proportional to our number of Drupal users whereas the peaks in available entropy seem to be much more constant and less proportional to these 2 metrics, we're thinking available entropy is the reflect of a root cause which, combined with the traffic to our website, is causing those slow queries (and not the opposite, slow queries influencing the entropy). Accordingly: Q: What underlying problem do you think could cause regular peaks in available entropy that could have an influence on MySQL's ability to process queries?

Have you ever heard: "My Oracle WebCenter Content instance is running slow. I checked the memory and CPU usage of the application server and it has plenty of resources. What could be going wrong?An Oracle WebCenter Content instance runs on an application server and relies on a database server on the back end. If your application server tier is running fine, chances are that your database server tier may host the root of the problem. While many things could cause performance problems, on active Enterprise Content Management systems, keeping database statistics updated is extremely important.The Oracle Database have a set of built-in optimizer utilities that can help make database queries more efficient. It is strongly recommended to update or re-create the statistics about the physical characteristics of a table and the associated indexes in order to maximize the efficiency of optimizers. These physical characteristics include: Number of records Number of pages Average record length The frequency with which you need to update statistics depends on how quickly the data is changing. Typically, statistics should be updated when the number of new items since the last update is greater than ten percent of the number of items when the statistics were last updated. If a large amount of documents are being added or removed from the system, the a post step should be added to gather statistics upon completion of this massive data change. In some cases, you may need to collect statistics in the middle of the data processing to expedite its execution. What are some good resources for learning about file systems? [closed]

I'd like to learn about file system design at a very detailed level. I'm currently in a graduate level operating systems course, and we're currently going over file systems. We mostly discuss papers and such, but our semester long project is to implement a log-structured file system using fuse and a virtual disk. Are there any good books that focus heavily on file system design and implementation? I have some conceptual clouding on things that seem very basic such as "when we say that an inode has pointers to blocks, do we mean anything besides the inode keeping track of block numbers? Is there any other format for 'disk pointers'?" I'm actually looking at file system design to start my career, so I'm probably going to try to implement a more traditional file system with fuse and our virtual disk format after this course is over.

Changing Word mail merge data source locations in bulk?

I've just moved a number of Word mail merge files, and a number of Excel spreadsheets that are the data sources for the mail merges, from a Windows XP computer to a Windows 7 computer, and now all the paths for the merge sources are incorrect (used to be c:\documents and settings\user\my documents.... now c:\users\documents....). While I can correct the path of the data source in each file individually, I was hoping that there would be some way of updating the files in bulk, as there are a relatively large number of them. Word 2007 is what is being used, but the documents are all in the previous DOC format (not DOCX).

Is it normal to these Xcode prompts/errors when you deploy to IOS Simulator from Unity?

Just trying out the IOS build process.... Is it normal to see: Q1 - "upgrade to latest project format - project currently in Xcode 3.1 format, this will upgrade to 3.2" - just click OK and let Xcode do it's stuff? Q2 - same as Q1 but this time for the message "Remove obsolete build settings - will remove the build setting PREBINDING" Q3 - also when deploying to "Lastest IOS Simulator" you get the Simulator target produced, but also a non-simulator target which has lots of errors. So I assume you just ignore this target and not use it in Xcode correct? (i.e. just use the simulator target that is produced) Q4 - get a lot of warning after the simulator target is built? program works ok however.... schema.org 'reviewRating' tag not recognized by google snippet testing tool

I'm trying to add more structural information to my webpages by using the microdata format suggested in www.schema.org. The procedure seems straight forward but I'm having issues validating my results in the Google Rich Snippets Testing Tool. Check out this review page, here I'm using the 'reviewRating' property item to specify rating values for that particular review. I followed the same format as defined in schema.org/Rating but this markup fails validation in Google's rich snippet testing tool with the following error info. Item Type: http://schema.org/rating reviewrating = 5 ratingvalue = 5 Warning: Property "reviewrating" was not found.

Why is Double.Parse so slow?

I was recently investigating a bottleneck in one of my applications, which read a CSV file from disk using a TextReader a line at a time, split the tokens, called Double.Parse on each one, then shunted the results into an object list. I was surprised to find it was actually the Double.Parse which seemed to be taking up most of the time.Googling turned up this, which is a little unfocused in places but throws out some excellent ideas:It makes more sense to work with binary format directly, rather than coerce strings into doublesThere is a significant performance improvement in composing doubles directly from the byte stream via long intermediariesString.Split is inefficient on fixed length recordsIn fact it turned out that my problem was more insidious and also more mundane -- a simple case of bad data in, bad data out. Since I had been serialising my Doubles as strings, when I inadvertently divided by zero and produced a "NaN", this of course was serialised as well without error. And because I was reading in using Double.Parse, these "NaN" fields were also (correctly) populating real Double objects without error. The issue is that Double.Parse("NaN") is incredibly slow. In fact, it is of the order of 2000x slower than parsing a valid double. For example, the code below gave me results of 357ms to parse 1000 NaNs, versus 15ms to parse 100,000 valid doubles. const int invalid_iterations = 1000; const int valid_iterations = invalid_iterations * 100; const string invalid_string = "NaN"; const string valid_string = "3.14159265"; DateTime start = DateTime.Now; for (int i = 0; i < invalid_iterations; i++) { double invalid_double = Double.Parse(invalid_string); } Console.WriteLine(String.Format("{0} iterations of invalid double, time taken (ms): {1}", invalid_iterations, ((TimeSpan)DateTime.Now.Subtract(start)).Milliseconds )); start = DateTime.Now; for (int i = 0; i < valid_iterations; i++) { double valid_double = Double.Parse(valid_string); } Console.WriteLine(String.Format("{0} iterations of valid double, time taken (ms): {1}", valid_iterations, ((TimeSpan)DateTime.Now.Subtract(start)).Milliseconds )); I think the moral is to look at the context -- specifically the data -- as well as the code itself. Once I had corrected my data, the performance of Double.Parse was perfectly acceptable, and while clearly it could have been improved, it was now sufficient to my needs.

Limit maximum incoming connections to a port using iptables

I have a server that has apache listening on a number of ports. Some ports are used for configuring the server, and another is used to download large files. My problem is that when I have a large number of clients downloading files, the web interface is uncontactable. I would like to limit the number of clients connecting on the "large file" port so that apache always has available connections to configure the server. A REJECT is fine, the client trying to download the file will back off and retry later. Each client only has one connection open to the server at a time, so limiting by IP won't work. I know I could put something in front of apache to manage this, but I'd really like to do it in iptables, without adding more software.

Error loading PCX image in FreeImage library

I'm using FreeImage in C++ for loading texuture from the PCX image. My FreeImage code is as following: FREE_IMAGE_FORMAT fif = FIF_UNKNOWN; //pointer to the image data BYTE* bits(0); fif = FreeImage_GetFileType(m_fileName.c_str(), 0); if (FreeImage_FIFSupportsReading(fif)) dib = FreeImage_Load(fif, m_fileName.c_str()); //retrieve the image data bits = FreeImage_GetBits(dib); //get the image width and height width = FreeImage_GetWidth(dib); height = FreeImage_GetHeight(dib); My problem is the width and height variable are both 512, while the bits array is an empty string, which make the following OPENGL call corrupt: glTexImage2D(m_textureTarget, 0, GL_RGB, width, height, 0, GL_RGBA, GL_UNSIGNED_BYTE, bits); While debugging, I notice that the "fif" variable (which contains the format of the image) is JPEG, while the Image is actually PCX. I wonder whether or not the FreeImage recognize the wrong format (from PCX to JPEG), so tha the bits array is an empty string. I hope to see your explanation about this problem. Thanks so much

Hiding a column from a pivot table without removing it from the chart

I have a pivot table with two columns: number of users who visited a website (impressions) and number of users who registered on the site (regs). The rows are for dates. I want to visualize the percentage of users who registered after visiting the site. Thus, I have the number of users for each cell as a value field, displaying it as percentage of impressions. Generating a pivot chart from the table, impressions and regs are plotted over date as a percentage of impressions. This means there is one line at 100% for impressions (always 100% of itself) and the graph for registrations below that. I'd like to remove the line for impressions, but when I set a filter to do so, registrations vanish as well, since the column for impressions is filtered from the pivot chart as well, turning the value field invalid. How can I just show registrations as a percentage of impressions in the chart?

How do you apply development practices like version control, testing and continuous integration/deployment to system administration?

Imagine you're going to manage a number of servers with a number of different services that's used by a number of people. Now say you want to reconfigure or replace some software on one of those servers. Obviously you don't want to work on servers that are in production. If this was a code change, as a developer, I would make the change on my local development machine, test it locally and commit the change to a version control system. The changes could then be deployed in a staging environment, tested further and finally deployed in a production environment. It would also be easy for me to roll back, if necessary. Generally, or specifically, how do you achieve this in system administration? (The first thing that comes to mind is to use virtual machines and put virtual machine images in version control, but I'm sure there is a lot of literature and clever solutions I'm not presently aware of.)

Ok. We know database size, number of concurrent users, number of transactions per minute; should choose number of processors, RAID, RAM, mirroring and clustering. There are no exact rule.. but may be there are no rules at all? In my practice in every case I have "legacy" system, and after some inspections and interview I can form an opinion how hardware and design can be improved. But every time when I meet "absolutely" new system (I guess there are no new systems, but sometimes are such tasks) I can't say anything trustful. So I'm interesting how people deal with such tasks? They map task on theirs experience or have some base formulas?

Maya Animated Character export for XNA 4.0 problem

To begin with, I'm trying to export an animated character in .fbx format from Maya 2013 to XNA 4.0 In Maya, The Model has a basic rig and the animations are in clips made in the Trax editor. so the issue i'm having is after selecting the model and the root joint and then hitting export in .fbx format, for some reason when i open the exported .fbx file the joint system is detached from the model with no animation. Btw, i have the animations in clips so that they can be called in code, for example "run","walk","attack". So, what can i do to solve this problem? Thank you.
