• What do encrypted files' data look like?

  I know there are a lot of encryption programs available, that I would guess use different methods for encryption, and thus have different types of output files (.fve .tc .cha .dmg (bitlocker, truecrypt, challenger, ect.)), but if someone didn't know what the file was and just looked at the data, what would it look like? Does it just look like random bits, or can you still pick out a pattern? If it does look random, how is it if I moved the encrypted file to another computer, the other computer can tell it's a file, and is able to decrypt it (how would it even know where to start or stop, if it all looked random)? Also, how is the structure affected by encrypting files twice, using the same method, or a different one? Thanks for any help, and if you know any books or site about encryption for complete idiots, I'd appreciate it!

• Is there a way to correct wrongly typed password / abort the operation while on password prompt in the console in MINGW32?

  I sometimes mistype a password when being asked for it, e.g. by Git when pushing to remote repository. The password is not displayed (even masked as asterisks) in the console. Is there a way either to correct the password, or to abort the operation? Backspace for editing and CtrlC for aborting do not seem to work. I want to save some time instead of waiting for the remote authentication to fail, or providing a bad password, then Enter, CtrlC. Edit: Unfortunately CtrlU doesn't work for me (MINGW32 @ Windows XP). Any other guesses?

• How to store etckeeper repositories on a central server via git

  Hello, I would like to have one central git repository for all my servers' etckeeper .git repos. Here the suggestion was to use a file in /etc/etckeeper/commit.d, which basically looks like this, assuming that a git repo had been set up in somedir on somehost: #!/bin/sh cd /etc git push faruser@farhost:somedir The problem with this is, that it would be really nice to have all servers in the same repo on the central server. I tried git push faruser@farhost:somedir/server1 but that failed. As you can see, I've never worked with git before ... • Unix tool for splitting archives

  I'm dumping an svn repository to a giant USB disk that is formatted FAT due to necessity (treat this as unchangeable). It conks out when you try to create a file larger than 4 gb. I need a tool that I can pipe data to that will create files of arbitrary size that when catted together will be the original file. I can write a tool to do this, but if one already exists I'd rather use it. Cheers EDIT: A second look at the split man page looks like it might work.

• Redmine Subversion: LDAP _and_ local auth

  I need to set up a subversion repository with apache authentication against both an external LDAP server as well as the local Redmine database. That is, we have users whose accounts exist only in the LDAP directory and some users whose accounts only exist in the local Redmine db - all should be able to access the repo. I can't quite seem to get the apache config right for this. I know I saw a how-to for this at some point, I think using Redmine.pm, but I can't seem to find it anymore.. Thanks.

• Using inheritance and polymorphism to solve a common game problem

  I have two classes; let's call them Ogre and Wizard. (All fields are public to make the example easier to type in.) public class Ogre { int weight; int height; int axeLength; } public class Wizard { int age; int IQ; int height; } In each class I can create a method called, say, battle() that will determine who will win if an Ogre meets and Ogre or a Wizard meets a Wizard. Here's an example. If an Ogre meets an Ogre, the heavier one wins. But if the weight is the same, the one with the longer axe wins. public Ogre battle(Ogre o) { if (this.height > o.height) return this; else if (this.height < o.height) return o; else if (this.axeLength > o.axeLength) return this; else if (this.axeLength < o.axeLength) return o; else return this; // default case } We can make a similar method for Wizards. But what if a Wizard meets an Ogre? We could of course make a method for that, comparing, say, just the heights. public Wizard battle(Ogre o) { if (this.height > o.height) return this; else if (this.height < o.height) return o; else return this; } And we'd make a similar one for Ogres that meet Wizard. But things get out of hand if we have to add more character types to the program. This is where I get stuck. One obvious solution is to create a Character class with the common traits. Ogre and Wizard inherit from the Character and extend it to include the other traits that define each one. public class Character { int height; public Character battle(Character c) { if (this.height > c.height) return this; else if (this.height < c.height) return c; else return this; } } Is there a better way to organize the classes? I've looked at the strategy pattern and the mediator pattern, but I'm not sure how either of them (if any) could help here. My goal is to reach some kind of common battle method, so that if an Ogre meets an Ogre it uses the Ogre-vs-Ogre battle, but if an Ogre meets a Wizard, it uses a more generic one. Further, what if the characters that meet share no common traits? How can we decide who wins a battle?

  I recently unticked the "pre-released updates" option in Software Sources on my Ubuntu Lucid 10.04.1 installation. The Ubuntu wiki states the following regarding this source: The proposed updates are updates which are waiting to be moved into the recommended updates queue after some testing. They may never reach recommended or they may be replaced with a more recent update. Roughly 20 installed packages have indeed not made it into recommended updates, and occasionally cause conflicts when I install new software, as related packages of the newer version are unavailable now that I've disabled the source. How can I force a downgrade of all packages for which an earlier version exists in a enabled repository?

• mailsend not sending to (or qmail not receiving from) the same machine

  A web applications sends two emails: to the user of the webapp to the administrator the administrators mailbox (qmail) is on the same machine as the web application (php, apache, /usr/sbin/sendmail). email 1 works, email 2 sometimes doesn't work. I don't see any pattern in the mails that don't work. Also because I don't exactly know WHICH emails failed (since the email itself would be the only notification). email 2 looks like this: from: <[email protected]> #changes for each user to: <[email protected]> What could be the problem? Are rejected emails stored somewhere? (if they are rejected.. how do I check this?)

• Can you specify git-shell in .ssh/authorized_keys to restrict access to only git commands via ssh?

  I'd like to be able to use a ssh key for authentication, but still restrict the commands that can be executed over the ssh tunnel. With Subversion, I've achieved this by using a .ssh/authorized_keys file like: command="/usr/local/bin/svnserve -t --tunnel-user matt -r /path/to/repository",no-port-forwarding,no-agent-forwarding,no-X11-forwarding,no-pty ssh-rsa AAAAB3NzaC1yc2EAAAABIetc... I've tried this with "/usr/bin/git-shell" in the command, but I just get the funky old fatal: What do you think I am? A shell? error message.

  I'm trying to set up a batch file to automatically deploy a php app to a web server. Basically, what I want is an entirely automated process: I would just give it a revision number from the repository and it would then export the files, upload via ftp and then update deployment info at the repo host (codebase). However, I'm starting from scratch here. How would I set up a batch file to accept a variable when it was run? For example, the command myfile.bat /revision 42 should deploy revision 42 to my server. If anyone can point me in the right direction I'd appreciate it.

  I am trying to use checkinstall to build a package from source code. However, when i run checkinstall , it ask : /root/rpmbuild has no source directory, please write the path to the rpm source directory tree. i am running on fedora 12 and system was installed through kickstart via repository of dvd of fc12. I was not aware of the rpm source directory during the installation. so how can i check whether rpm source has been installed or not. if not, how to make the rpm source directory so that i can please the checkinstall and build the package successfully. or can i bypass it? thanks a lot

• log-back and thirdparty writing to stdout. How to stop them getting interleaved.

  First some background. I have a batch-type java process run from a DOS batch script. All the java logging goes to stdout, and the batch script redirects the stdout to a file. (This is good for me because I can ECHO from the script and it gets into the log file, so I can see all the java JVM command line args, which is great for debugging.) I may not I use slf4j API, and for the backend I used to use log4j, but recently switched to logback-classic. Although all my application code uses slf4j, I have a third party library that does it's own logging (not using a standard API) which also gets written to stdout. The problem is that sometimes log lines get mixed up and don't cleanly appear on separate lines. So logback must be doing something different. The problem seems to be that although PrintStream.write(byte buf[], int off, int len) is synchronized, however I can see in ch.qos.logback.core.joran.spi.ConsoleTarget that System.out.write(int b) is the only write method called. So inbetween logback outputting each byte, the thirdparty library is managing to write a whole string to the stdout. (Not only is this cause me a problem, but it must also be a little inefficient?) Is there any other fix to this interleaving problem than patching the code to ConsoleTarget so it implments the other write methods? Any nice work arounds. Or should I just file a bug report? These are all Windows boxes which includes XP with various SP levels, Vista both RTM and SP1, and several 2000 and 2003 servers. How can I determine: Whether ANY AV product is installed? • Mac sees mangled filenames from Linux SAMBA share

  Certain filenames in my SAMBA shares from Linux are not getting transmitted properly. It's certain files in certain folders and it doesn't affect all folders or all files within a single folder. I can find no discerning pattern to the mangling but hoping that this is a known problem. No amount of reboot, restart, etc. will fix this problem. The filenames, when they get mangled, all end up in this form: 0JY4B3~H.M4V 0MBS1O~M.M4V 0NKDX9~R.M4V 0O0ZTA~A.M4V These are MPEG4 files. The extension remains intact. Any ideas?

• Outlook Replies with Inline Comments

  I have a user who uses Word as his e-mail editor. Often when replying to an e-mail, he'll insert his comments into the body of the original e-mail. Since he is using Word as the editor, these show as [User Name] Comment Text in a contrasting color. However, some users see the comments in their Outlook, and others do not. I've tried Selecting/DeSelecting Word as the e-mail editor on the recipients, and it does not seem to make a difference. We are using Exchange 2007 with Outlook 2003 and Outlook 2007 clients along with a few Entourage Clients. There does not seem to be a pattern related to which client is used, but Entourage seems to be more likely to have the problem. TIA, Bill

• Ubuntu server hangs on reboot "could not stat resume device file"

  Instead of booting into the running system this machine stops and on the terminal I can see a message: could not stat resume device file /dev/sdb5 When I attach a keyboard and press enter the boot continues and the machine comes up like normal. But it's essential that this machine comes up under most circumstancs alone. There never was something like a "resume" on this machine. I tried several times to reboot, but this does not happen on all boots, I can not find a pattern here. There is a software raid running on the box. • How do I install automake and autoconf on RedHat Enterprise 5?

  I am attempting to install "uploadprogress" for a PHP application, and have failed on dependencies. Firstly, on phpize, then php-devel, then on autoconf and automake. I have tried yum, and various repositories, with no luck. I think it's to do with the ultra-tight but annoying set up they have on Rackspace Cloud servers. Does anyone know where I can find a repository that I can tell yum to look at that will contain php-devel, autoconf, automake, etc? Thanks ever so much. • Retrieve a domain name based on an IP Address?

  I'm reviewing some apache logs, specifically with respect to downloaded files. I'm interested in knowing, if possible, which domain is responsible for the download, given an IP address. I've given nslookup a try and it seems to (mostly) get the job done but it returns all sorts of extraneous information. Ideally, I pass in an IP and receive a domain back. Before I write a shell script to parse the output of nslookup to capture the domain, I'd like to know if this is the best way of approaching this problem, or if there is a more tried-and-true method of doing this. Specifically, I'd like to know if an address resolves to an amazonaws.com domain. I understand that this might be difficult because EC2 machines are dynamically created and destroyed - I'd like to know if the IP addresses for AWS/EC2/EMR machines fit any sort of addressing pattern.

  I have need of installing a Java 7 development environment on a RHEL 6.3 (system details are below). Following the official OpenJDK directions I tried yum install java-1.7.0-openjdk-devel (as root). This yields the error message: No package java-1.7.0-openjdk-devel available. The Java6 JDK java-1.6.0-openjdk-devel and the Java7 JRE java-1.7.0-openjdk are both available, but the Java7 JDK does not appear. Is there a non-default repository from which I can install this? If so what is it? Distribution: Red Hat Enterprise Linux Server release 6.3 (Santiago) Kernel: 2.6.32-279.5.2.el6.x86_64

• Getting error while running apt-get update

  I am getting the following error while running apt-get update on all of the servers. W: A error occurred during the signature verification. The repository is not updated and the previous index files will be used. Release: The following signatures couldn't be verified because the public key is not available: NO_PUBKEY 8B48AA6247928553 W: Some index files failed to download, they have been ignored, or old ones used instead. The solutions available are: To login into each of the server and run the following command to import the gpg key for that repo. sudo gpg --keyserver hkp://subkeys.pgp.net --recv-keys 8B48AA6247928553 sudo gpg --export --armor 8B48AA6247928553 | sudo apt-key add - But this requires logging into all of the individual servers and run the above two commands. I am looking for a way to correct by working on apt-repo server. Is there any way to do that.

• http server connectivity puzzle

  I have been seeing some strange connection issue in the production environment. The setup has two IBM Http Server's (IHS) and a network IP load-balancer in front of them (round-robin). One instance the system is working fine, the next requests stop arriving at the IHS. Telnet directly to port 80 of the IHS is established sucessfully, but connection to the port 80 through the IP of the load-balancer fails! The puzzle comes next, the network admins say the load-balancer is working fine. When we finally reboot the IHS servers and request start flowing... The situation happened three times the last month and no obvious pattern was found. Any debug ideas?
