• Is it possible to use theme colors in Windows Forms apps?

  I normally make use of System Colors whenever possible when designing Windows Forms applications just so that it'll fit in with the user's preferences. But is it possible to use Theme Colors? I realize that this limits you in several ways (must be running Windows that supports it and has the Themes service running), so I would certainly like it if it could fall back on some other default, but since I'm fairly sure 99% of my users will have it available, I'd like to make use of it if possible. Specifically, for newer Windows versions (Vista and 7), things like hyperlinks have a softer more pastel-ish blue. The old System Colors do not define anything for links and the like, and in general are much more limited (coming from the 95 days) in choices and variety. Though WPF probably has better support, I'm not at liberty to use it. If some third party utility, assembly, or the like is necessary, it would also need to be free to use. I don't need anything that fancy, but in a perfect world I would be able to do something like this: linkLabel1.LinkColor = System.Drawing.ThemeColors.Hyperlink; Am I stuck just using the default Blue (0,0,255) and having them look out of place in Vista and above? I'll even settle for ugly p/invoke interop methods if need be...

  I am trying to do an accumulator in IBasic for a college assignment and I have the general stuff down but I cannot get it to accumulate. The code is below. My question is how do I get it to accumulate and pass to the different module. I'm trying to calculate how many right answers the user gets. Also, i need to calculate the percentage of right answers. so if the user gets 9 out of 10 right theyed answer 90% right. • Trying to build a Drupal-like CMS in ASP.NET MVC - Newbie Questions

  I am new to ASP.NET MVC, and the ASP.NET technology in general, so, please, excuse the stupidity of my questions. I have a lot of experience with php development and CMS customization (Drupal and Wordpress mainly), and I wanted to know whether some techniques could be applied in asp.net mvc. I want to know what exactly could be modified without recompiling an already built application Can I edit the views without recompiling the app. Can I create custom themes ? Can I add plugins compiled as dlls and use them at runtime. Can I "mark" the assembly in such a way that the web application will check on the next request and will reference it, without me manually adding it to the project and recompiling. I've heard that this is possible. I will make sure to add more when something comes up. The reason I am asking is because I'd like to try and develop a Drupal-like CMS (custom types, views, etc) in asp.net mvc. The dynamism of php will be quite a challenge to replicate in a compiled technology, yet I am ready to try.

• Has anyone used Rational Team Concert (RTC)?

  The company I work for is currently evaluating replacements for SourceSafe, and for various reasons, I think RTC will be chosen. I'm a little scared that we're going to end up with a solution that isn't the best for us in our situation. I've tried researching a little bit about what it is, but all I have been able to find are marketing things, but nothing about how it actually works (any of the paradigms it uses, etc). Our team is around 8 developers and 2 QA people on a single project (and 4-5 more people that would be using it for their independent project). It seems like RTC is targetted for larger teams, but our team is relatively small. Does anyone has experience using RTC in a smaller team? The project that would be using it is a .NET/WPF application, so we would be using primarily Visual Studio. Is the Visual Studio integration any good, or are we stuck having to have Eclipse open on top of Visual Studio? Personally, I have been using Bazaar as my personal source control (and checking out/into sourcesafe from a branch), as well as on personal projects. Does RTC incorporate features of "third generation" version control systems, such as first class branching/merging and changesets rather than file changes, and good visualization of where changes come from? Also, what are the general pros and cons for it?

• Java NIO (Netty): How does Encryption or GZIPping work in theory (with filters)

  Hello Experts, i would be very thankfull if you can explain to me, how in theory the "Interceptor/Filter" Pattern in ByteStreams (over Sockets/Channels) work (in Asynchronous IO with netty) in regard to encryption or compression of data. Given I have a Filter that does GZIPPING. How is this internally implemented? Does the Filter "collect" so many bytes form the channel, that this is a usefull number of bytes that can then be en/decoded? What is in general the minimal "blocksize(data to encode/decode in a chunk)" of socket based gzipping? Does this "blocksize" have to be negotiated in advance between server and client? What happens if the client does not send enough data to "fill" the blocksize (due to a network conquestion) but does not close the connection. Does this mean the other side will simply wait until it gets enough bytes to decode or until a timeout occoures...How is the Filter pattern the applied? The compression filter will de/compress the blocksize of bytes and then store them again in the same buffer would (in the case of netty) i normally be using the ChannelHanlderContext to pass the de/encoded data to the next filter?... Any explanations/links/tutorials (for beginners;-) will be very much appreciated to help me understand how for example encryption/compressing are implemented in socket based communication with filters/interceptor pattern. thank you very much tom

• How to correctly set the ORACLE_HOME variable on Ubuntu 9.x?

  I have the same problem as listed here: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/52239/oracle-lost-sysdba-password although I did not lose the password, I entered it twice in the configure script originally, and then when I went to login (localhost:8080/apex, password not accepted. I don't have anything in the database, I just want to install and use Oracle-XE. I have tried apt-get removing it twice and reinstalling, but if I try to run /etc/init.d/oracle-xe configure again and I get "Oracle Database 10g Express Edition is already configured" despite the second time removing any folders I could find for Oracle XE. I tried running sqlplus "/ as sysdba" but all I get is: "Error 6 initializing SQL*Plus Message file sp1.msb not found SP2-0750: You may need to set ORACLE_HOME to your Oracle software directory" I tried setting the variable via export. (also tried set). Tried: "export ORACLE_HOME=/usr/lib/oracle/xe/app/oracle/product/10.2.0/server/bin/sqlplus" and all the subdirectories of that. Same error every time. What is the ORACLE_HOME supposed to be set to? The only reference I have seen either just say general or say the above up to the version number then "/db_1". I do no thave a db_1. Let me know if need any clarification. Don't understand what I did wrong in this process.

• WinForms databind to collection property (such as count)

  I want to databind to a collection property, such as Count. in general, when I data bind I specify data member for the object property in the collection, not for the actual properties collection itself exposes. for example, I have a list of custom objects. I show them in datagridview. but I also want to show their total count using a separate label. is there a way to do this through databinding? I imagine that somehow I need to force PropertyManager to be used, instead of CurrentyManager? I get the following exception. Notice that DataSource is collection and has TotalValue property. System.ArgumentException: Cannot bind to the property or column TotalValue on the DataSource. • Why is Available Physical Memory (dwAvailPhys) > Available Virtual Memory (dwAvailVirtual) in call G

  I am playing with an MSDN sample to do memory stress testing (see: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/magazine/cc163613.aspx) and an extension of that tool that specifically eats physical memory (see http://www.donationcoder.com/Forums/bb/index.php?topic=14895.0;prev_next=next). I am obviously confused though on the differences between Virtual and Physical Memory. I thought each process has 2 GB of virtual memory (although I also read 1.5 GB because of "overhead". My understanding was that some/all/none of this virtual memory could be physical memory, and the amount of physical memory used by a process could change over time (memory could be swapped out to disc, etc.)I further thought that, in general, when you allocate memory, the operating system could use physical memory or virtual memory. From this, I conclude that dwAvailVirtual should always be equal to or greater than dwAvailPhys in the call GlobalMemoryStatus. However, I often (always?) see the opposite. What am I missing. I apologize in advance if my question is not well formed. I'm still trying to get my head around the whole memory management system in Windows. Tutorials/Explanations/Book recs are most welcome! • iPhone offline reading

  Hi, first of all - I am quite new to iPhone App development (3 months). I am working for a software company that offers a content management system. Our customers are for the main part publishing houses for magazines. They use our software to write articles to their homepages. Now we want to offer iPhone Applications to go with our cms. What I have accomplished so far is an RSS reader that shows newly published articles in a list view. The user selects one article and is redirected to a specially formatted detail view of this article. The next step is to add offline reading capabilities. I have searched the internet up and down but couldn't find anything like a best practice for that. I get it that there are two possibilities in general: Store the contents of the uiwebview locally on the iPhone/iPad (including css, images, js and so on). There would be the need to rework the basic html to use the downloaded css, images and js. Also I would have to somehow edit hyperlinks to following pages in multipage articles - Sounds like a lot of work ;) Create a PDF on the server side and download that to the mobile device. Rework the RSS Source to point to the locally saved pdf instead of the website on the server. My question is - what is the better way to go? Are there any downsides for either of the possibilities? Are there other (simple ;)) ways to implement offline reading features? Are there possibly any howto's that I could've missed? Thanks y'all!

• Is a VCS appropriate for usage by a designer?

  I know that a VCS is absolutely critical for a developer to increase productivity and protect the code, no doubts about it. But what about a designer, using say, Photoshop (though it's not specific to any tools, just to make my point clearer). VCSs uses delta compression to store different versions of files. This works very well for code, but for images, that's a problem. Raster image files are binary formats, though vector image files are text (SVG comes to my mind) and pose to problem. The problem comes with .psd files (and any other image "source" file) - those can get pretty big and since I'm not familiar with the format, I'll consider them as binary files. How would a VCS work in this condition? The repository could be pretty darned big if the VCS server isn't able to diff the files efficiently (or worse, not at all) and over time this can become a really big pain when someone needs to check out the repository (or clone it if using a DVCS). Have any of you used a VCS for this purpose? How well does it work? I'm mostly interested in Mercurial, though this is a general situation that applies to any VCS.

• .NET WF4: Should it be in the middle of everything?

  I am aware that WF4 (Windows Workflow 4.0, part of .NET 4.0) is a significant rework and redesign of WF3, where much of what made WF3 a poor technology choice has been cleaned up in WF4. For example, as far as I can tell, WF4 (Windows Workflow 4.0) activities are more or less testable with [TestMethod] and mocking. This among other things, like improved performance, has grabbed my attention about the technology again, whereas I had previously pooh-poohed WF3. I'm working on a new architecture for essentially an n-tier collaborative application (not enterprise-class, just a smallish project with potential to grow significantly) where I'm already trying to discipline myself to use IoC and, to some extent, TDD, and I'm wondering, in general terms, whether it is wiser to just hand-code workflow logic or if I should delve into learning and integrating WF4 so that WF becomes literally the controller of the entire application, i.e. the practical C in "MVC" (not ASP.NET MVC but rather the pattern). So should workflow activities in WF4 be the primary controller for a highly expandable/growable web-based collaborative application? Or am I asking entirely the wrong question? This is a vague question, I'm sure, so abstract answers are as welcome as specific ones.

• How to create Fibonacci Sequence in Java

  I really suck at math. I mean, I REALLY suck at math. I'm trying to make a simple fibonacci sequence class for an algorithm I'll be using. I have seen the python example which looks something like this: a = 0 b = 1 while b < 10: print b a, b = b, b+a The problem is that I can't really make this work in any other language. I'd like to make it work in Java, since I can pretty much translate it into the other languages I use from there. This is the general thought: public class FibonacciAlgorithm { private Integer a = 0; private Integer b = 1; public FibonacciAlgorithm() { } public Integer increment() { a = b; b = a + b; return value; } public Integer getValue() { return b; } } All that I end up with is doubling, which I could do with multiplication :( Can anyone help me out? • Call Multiple Stored Procedures with the Zend Framework

  I'm using Zend Framework 1.7.2, MySQL and the MySQLi PDO adapter. I would like to call multiple stored procedures during a given action. I've found that on Windows there is a problem calling multiple stored procedures. If you try it you get the following error message: SQLSTATE[HY000]: General error: 2014 Cannot execute queries while other unbuffered queries are active. Consider using PDOStatement::fetchAll(). Alternatively, if your code is only ever going to run against mysql, you may enable query buffering by setting the PDO::MYSQL_ATTR_USE_BUFFERED_QUERY attribute. I found that to work around this issue I could just close the connection to the database after each call to a stored procedure: if (strtoupper(substr(PHP_OS, 0, 3)) === 'WIN') { //If on windows close the connection $db->closeConnection(); } This has worked well for me, however, now I want to call multiple stored procedures wrapped in a transaction. Of course, closing the connection isn't an option in this situation, since it causes a rollback of the open transaction. Any ideas, how to fix this problem and/or work around the issue.   I am currently learning F# and functional programming in general (from a C# background) and I have a question about using .net CLR objects during my processing. Note XslCompiledTransform.Load works on an object, and returns void. Also the XslCompiledTransform.Transform requires a memorystream object and returns void. The above strategy used is to add the object at the end (the ; mem) to return a value and make functional programming work. When we want to do this one after another we have a function on each line with a return value at the end: let myFunc = new XmlDocument("doc") |> fun a -> a.Load("report.xml"); a |> fun a -> a.AppendChild(new XmlElement("Happy")); a Is there a more correct way (in terms of functional programming) to handle .net objects and objects that were created in a more OO environment? • Strategies for Accessing a Application with a COM API From PHP

  Background: Experienced PHP developer with a mostly *nix background. I'm writing a PHP application that needs to interact with a proprietary 3rd party system. The 3rd party system is Windows only. The PHP application will be living on a separate Linux based system The 3rd party application has been described as having a "COM API" that I'll need to talk to from the PHP application. What does this look like architecturally speaking? I'm starting with the COM section of the PHP manual, but I have specific questions. Specific Questions: Can I talk directly to a COM API from a PHP application running on another server? If so, how? (what PHP extensions would I need, or what protocols/PHP functions would I be using to talk to the API) If the answer to number 2 is no, I'd assume I'd need some kind of application on the Windows machine that can talk to COM, and then a service on the windows machine I can hit with PHP. Are there prebuilt frameworks for this kind of thing? Is this all nonsense and/or did I say something exceedingly stupid? (Quite possible, as I'm a little fuzzy on what "COM" does and doesn't cover) I'm obviously not looking for a full solution here, I'm just trying to get a general idea of what is and isn't possible and what kind of things I'll want to Google for.   I am hoping to make this question and the answers to it the definitive guide to dealing with daylight saving time, in particular for dealing with the actual change overs. Many systems are dependent on keeping accurate time, the problem is with changes to time due to daylight savings - moving the clock forward or backwards. For instance, one has business rules in an order taking system that depend on the time of the order - if the clock changes, the rules might not be as clear. How should the time of the order be persisted? There is of course an endless number of scenarios - this one is simply an illustrative one. How have you dealt with the daylight saving issue? What assumptions are part of your solution? (looking for context here) As important, if not more so: What did you try that did not work? Why did it not work? I would be interested in programming, OS, data persistence and other pertinent aspects of the issue. General answers are great, but I would also like to see details especially if they are only available on one platform.

• Graph colouring algorithm: typical scheduling problem

  Hi, I'm training code problems like UvA and I have this one in which I have to, given a set of n exams and k students enrolled in the exams, find whether it is possible to schedule all exams in two time slots. Input Several test cases. Each one starts with a line containing 1 < n < 200 of different examinations to be scheduled. The 2nd line has the number of cases k in which there exist at least 1 student enrolled in 2 examinations. Then, k lines will follow, each containing 2 numbers that specify the pair of examinations for each case above. (An input with n = 0 will means end of the input and is not to be processed). Output: You have to decide whether the examination plan is possible or not for 2 time slots. Example: Input: 3 3 0 1 1 2 2 0 9 8 0 1 0 2 0 3 0 4 0 5 0 6 0 7 0 8 0 Ouput: NOT POSSIBLE. POSSIBLE. I think the general approach is graph colouring, but I'm really a newb and I may confess that I had some trouble understanding the problem. Anyway, I'm trying to do it and then submit it. Could someone please help me doing some code for this problem? I will have to handle and understand this algo now in order to use it later, over and over. I prefer C or C++, but if you want, Java is fine to me ;) Thanks in advance

• python / sqlite - database locked despite large timeouts

  Hi, I'm sure I'm missing something pretty obvious, but I can't for the life of me stop my pysqlite scripts crashing out with a database is locked error. I have two scripts, one to load data into the database, and one to read data out, but both will frequently, and instantly, crash depending on what the other is doing with the database at any given time. I've got the timeout on both scripts set to 30 seconds: cx = sqlite.connect("database.sql", timeout=30.0) and think I can see some evidence of the timeouts in that i get what appears to be a timing stamp (e.g 0.12343827e-06 0.1 - and how do I stop that being printed?) dumped occasionally in the middle of my curses formatted output screen, but no delay that ever gets remotely near the 30 second timeout, but still one of the other keeps crashing again and again from this. I'm running RHEL5.4 on a 64 bit 4 cpu HS21 IBM blade, and have heard some mention about issues about multi-threading and am not sure if this might be relevant. Packages in use are sqlite-3.3.6-5 and python-sqlite-1.1.7-1.2.1, and upgrading to newer versions outside of RedHat's official provisions is not a great option for me. Possible, but not desirable due to the environment in general. I have had autocommit=1 on previously on both scripts, but have since disabled on both, and am now cx.commit()ing on the inserting script and not committing on the select script. Ultimately as I only ever have one script actually making any modifications, I don't really see why this locking should ever ever happen. I have noticed that this is significantly worse over time when the database has gotten larger. It was recently at 13mb with 3 equal sized tables, which was about 1 day's worth of data. creating a new file has significantly improved this, which seems understandable, but the timeout ultimately just doesn't seem to be being obeyed. • Retrieve 2 last posts for each category.

  Hello, Lets say I have 2 tables: blog_posts and categories. Each blog post belongs to only ONE category, so there is basically a foreign key between the 2 tables here. I would like to retrieve the 2 lasts posts from each category, is it possible to achieve this in a single request? GROUP BY would group everything and leave me with only one row in each category. But I want 2 of them. It would be easy to perform 1 + N query (N = number of category). First retrieve the categories. And then retrieve 2 posts from each category. I believe it would also be quite easy to perform M queries (M = number of posts I want from each category). First query selects the first post for each category (with a group by). Second query retrieves the second post for each category. etc. I'm just wondering if someone has a better solution for this. I don't really mind doing 1+N queries for that, but for curiosity and general SQL knowledge, it would be appreciated! Thanks in advance to whom can help me with this.

• Asynchronously populate datagridview in Windows Forms application

  howzit! I'm a web developer that has been recently requested to develop a Windows forms application, so please bear with me (or dont laugh!) if my question is a bit elementary. After many sessions with my client, we eventually decided on an interface that contains a tabcontrol with 5 tabs. Each tab has a datagridview that may eventually hold up to 25,000 rows of data (with about 6 columns each). I have successfully managed to bind the grids when the tab page is loaded and it works fine for a few records, but the UI freezes when I bound the grid with 20,000 dummy records. The "freeze" occurs when I click on the tab itself, and the UI only frees up (and the tab page is rendered) once the bind is complete. I communicated this to the client and mentioned the option of paging for each grid, but she is adament w.r.t. NOT wanting this. My only option then is to look for some asynchronous method of doing this in the background. I don't know much about threading in windows forms, but I know that I can use the BackgroundWorker control to achieve this. My only issue after reading up a bit on it is that it is ideally used for "long-running" tasks and I/O operations. My questions: How does one determine a long-running task? How does one NOT MISUSE the BackgroundWorker control, ie. is there a general guideline to follow when using this? (I understand that opening/spawning multiple threads may be undesirable in certain instances) Most importantly: How can I achieve (asychronously) binding of the datagridview after the tab page - and all its child controls - loads.   I've got a few questions related to the use of MonoRail Testing Does everyone tend to use NUnit for their testing? I haven't worked enough with testing to know if this is a good testing framework to use. I'm just looking to get more into testing my applications a lot more than before and wanted to know if there's any general guidelines. Are you supposed to copy the controller over to a test area and just rename it with test in the name and re-run it? How do you ensure your test project and main project coincide with one another? Is it just a case of copying everything over again or are there tools available to do it for you? Route Extensions MonoRail tends to use <action>.rails, can you omit the .rails part if you configure your routing correctly? Why does this seem to be the standard? Folder Structures I haven't found anywhere which really points out your standard folder structure. Sure, you have Controllers, Models, and Views. But your Models folder should contain your data access objects as well. I've seen some have something like -> Models -> DaoClasses -> Entities But what about custom structures used to get data out of views? And if you're using NHibernate, where's a good place to stick the mappings? I know it's entirely dependent on the developer, but I haven't really seen any standard approach. Cheers

  I'm using Crystal Reports 11's RDC (COM) API to print. Why does crystal reports show a print dialog even when I pass false for promptUser? And how, then, can I suppress crystal reports' internal printer selection dialog and force it to use my values? Edit: Whoops, CR11, not CR9. Some further information: The reports that work properly (ie, do not show the print dialog) are generated internally using the RDC API; we create a new report object, import subreports into it, then print the result. No problem there. The reports that do not work properly (ie, force the print dialog to open) have been created with a previous version of crystal reports; however, opening and saving the report does not seem to help. Sample reports in the Crystal Reports installation directory show the same problem.   Hi there, I have a simple application to store address details and edit them. I have been away from VB for a few years now and need to refreash my knowledge while working to a tight deadline. I have a general Sub responsible for displaying a form where user can add contact details (by pressing button add) and edit them (by pressing button edit). This sub is stored in a class Contact. The way it is supposed to work is that there is a list with all the contacts and when new contact is added a new entry is displayed. If user wants to edit given entry he or she selects it and presses edit button Public Sub Display() Dim C As New Contact C.Cont = InputBox("Enter a title for this contact.") C.Fname = frmAddCont.txtFName.Text C.Surname = frmAddCont.txtSName.Text C.Address = frmAddCont.txtAddress.Text frmStart.lstContact.Items.Add(C.Cont.ToString) End Sub I call it from the form responsible for adding new contacts by Dim C As New Contact C.Display() and it works just fine. However when I try to do something similar using the edit button I get errors - "Unable to cast object of type 'System.String' to type 'AddressBook.Contact'."
