  • Use Seagate hard drive for both mac and windows

    I recently bought a seagate for mac 1tb external hard drive. When I connect to my macbook through the fire wire it works fine, but I also have media on my dell laptop which is running vista. When I connect the hard drive to that laptop using the usb cable vista doesnt recognize it. What am I doing wrong?

    I plan on creating a Windows software RAID 5 array but need to know when a drive goes bum. I don't plan on wanting to check the server every so often, so how can I have an email sent when a drive goes kapüt or otherwise has problems? Keying off the event log would be OK, but how does one set up notifications on it when the exact event ID(s) may not be known?

  • Cannot establish XMPP server-to-server connection to gmail

    My jabber-server fails to connect to gmail.com giving the error: outgoing s2s stream myserver.com.ua-bot.talk.google.com closed: undefined-condition (myserver.com.ua is a Google Apps Domain with Talk service enabled.) I am using the Prosody XMPP server. It works just fine with other jabber-servers I tested so far (e.g. jabber.ru). As for the Google services, I did have a google account where I added the domain name under question to the Webmasters tools page. However, I deleted my account long ago, so now it is unclear, how any of the Google services can relate to my domain name. So my question is: What is the real cause of this problem (my jabber-server configuration or imaginary Google account or something else) and how can I make my Prosody server connect to gmail.com jabber service?

  • Google Programmers

    As a soon-to-be software engineer, I have studied some languages during my time in college. I can name C, C++, Java, Scheme, Ruby, PHP, for example. However, one of the main principles in my college (recognized by many as the best in my country) is to teach us how to learn for ourselves and how to search the web when we have a doubt. This leads to a proactive attitude, when I need something, I go get it and this has worked so far for me. Recently, I started wondering though, how much development would I be able to do without internet access. The answer bugged me quite a bit. I know the concept of the languages, mostly I know what to do, but I was amazed by how "slow" things were without having the google to help in the development. The problem was mostly related to specific syntax but it was not without some effort that i solved some of the SPOJ problems in C++. Is this normal? Should I be worried and try to change something in my programming behaviour? UPDATE: I'll give a concrete example. Reading and writing to a file in java. I have done this about a dozen times in my life, yet every time I need to do it, I end up googling "read file java" and refreshing my memory. I completely understand the code, i fully understand what it does. But I am sure, that without google, it would take me a few tries to read and write correctly (if I had to sit in front of the screen with a blank page and write this without consulting any source whatsoever).

  • 12.10 does not boot sometimes from the hard drive, but it does consistently from the CD

    I have recently switched from Windows 7 to Ubuntu 12.10. I have installed Ubuntu 12.10 and I cleared everything from my computer, but it randomly stops at different screens. Only a purple screen comes up. I can choose Ubuntu from a list and a blinking white dot appears in the top left corner. The previous things happen and the Ubuntu login screen appears an I can log in. It is random. and I have not changed anything. I can always insert the bootable CD and it will work every time.

  • Why won't my Western Digital My Book Home 500GB drive mount on my Macbook Pro via Firewire?

    I can connect the drive via USB and it mounts correctly. However, when I connect via FireWire, the drive powers down. The drive realizes that it is plugged in. When I plug in via FireWire, the lights on the front of the drive flash the same as when it it mounting via USB, but then the drive powers down. I've upgraded the firmware on the drive, but it still won't mount via FireWire.

  • Assign a drive letter to a Solaris disk in a Windows box

    I need some way to map a UFS Solaris drive (ie, assign a drive letter to it) while it is in a Windows XP box. I've found utilities that will let me transfer files from a Solaris disk to a NTFS disk on the Windows box, but nothing that will let me map/share that Solaris disk. And no, putting the Solaris disk in a Solaris box and using something like Samba to share the disk is unfortunately not an option. Cat

  • Why is <my site url> not indexed by search engines? [closed]

    was indexed fine until about a year ago. The only thing I can think of is that search engines throw up at using h5 before h4, or that some person (fantasizing now) has reported my site as unsafe to every search engine. However, I'm not here to speculate. The site validates, and has an RSS feed on the front page, for Pat Morita's sake! To me, it looks like the kind of site search engines would feast on. It's got more than a dozen blogs on it, if nothing else. Hah. :) I was thinking you could identify basically what has changed in search engines (currently, google, yahoo, bing which used to work fine) the last year to make them not find news and blog articles on this site. The site was submitted to Google, oh, way back in 2006. With online crawler tests I get mixed results, some crawlers index fine, some go blank. I don't really know which ones are reliable and am looking to you guys for advice on that. Yes, I am prepared to again verify my site with Google and upload a sitemap, but that's not the topic here. I really would first like to know what change on the site last year could make search engines not index it. (Yees, the robots.txt is fine. Should be nothing to discourage bots there.) It's a very intriguing problem. One which I have yet to find the reason for but would like to know the reason for. Any and all input appreciated, but I would heavily enjoy pertinent advice the most. ;) Edit: Some google searches that don't show up include - aca630 All of which are posted in the news and blogs that are on the front page there. Now, these search terms are extremely specific as the term in is almost unique on the web and ACA630 is also a very qualified search term that can't be confused with mainstream search terms.

  • My Ubuntu drive is running out of space, how to fix, something is wrong

    I'm moving from windows and am having trouble figuring this out: I'm getting a message that pops up saying disk space is low. It says I have 800MB free. I click on the disk usage analyzer and it shows 24.6 total capacity and 22.5 used. When I look in GParted it shows a partition at 72.6GB where I have Ubuntu installed. It also shows that 70.65GB used and 1.94 free in that partition. How do I figure out what else is in that partition? It's the only ext4 format. What am I missing?

  • IIS SMTP server (Installed on local server) in parallel to Google Apps

    I am currently using free version of Google Apps for hosting my email.It works great for my official mails my email on Google is [email protected]. In addition I'm sending out high volume mails (registrations, forgotten passwords, newsletters etc) from the website (www.mydomain.com) using IIS SMTP installed on my windows machine. These emails are sent from [email protected] My problem is that when I send email from the website using IIS SMTP to a mail address [email protected] I don’t receive the email to Google apps. (I only receive these emails if I install a pop service on the server with the [email protected] email box). It seems that the IIS SMTP is ignoring the domain MX records and just delivers these emails to my local server.     We have websites with multilingual content. e.g. http://www.example.com/about-us/ http://www.example.com/en-HK/about-us/ http://www.example.com/en-GB/about-us/ http://www.example.com/zn-CH/about-us/ We need to configure the hreflang tags in sitemap for Google to know that there are alternate links for the same pages in different languages. I know for the above example that my sitemap url tag would look like this: <url> <loc>http://www.example.com/about-us</loc> <xhtml:link rel="alternate" hreflang="en-GB" href="http://www.example.com/en-GB/about-us"/> <xhtml:link rel="alternate" hreflang="en-HK" href="http://www.example.com/en-HK/about-us"/> <xhtml:link rel="alternate" hreflang="zn-CH" href="http://www.example.com/zn-CH/about-us"/> <changefreq>daily</changefreq> <priority>0.8</priority> </url> However, if I don't have the main url but just the last three ones with en-HK, en-GB and zn-CH, then how should my url tag look? Should I just skip the loc tag and keep the three xhtml:link tags? Or can I specify any url in the loc tag and put the remaining two in xhtml:link tags? I am new to Google sitemaps. Any help is greatly appreciated.   • Grub failure after cat removed USB drive

    I had a perfectly working Ubuntu Server system with U12.4 and Server installed and was setting up the mail system. When I was absent from my computer room my cat (furry type) apparently got to play with a USB dongle on an extension cable and removed it. The system went berserk and now will not boot. I ran Ubuntu 12.4 on the install disk and the directory structure and every thing appears to still be on the drives. How do I recover the GRUB boot section without the system repartitioning everything and wiping everything else? Please I am a total newb when it comes to Linux errors and fixing them.

    Hi All, I have a few external hard drives (SSDs and Platters (SATA), is this possible that I can install Kubuntu 10.10 x64 or Ubuntu 10.10 x64 onto one of these external hard drives? My System supports booting off a usb, it will just give me a learning playground without spoiling my existing operating environment. I know I can install as Virtual machines, but installing U/Kubuntu on a External HDD and booting off it would be easier. Will be grateful for your insights....and steps to do so. Thanks
