  Hi, I am using SQL server 2008 express and some of our columns are defined as varchar(255). Should I convert these columns to NvarChar(255) or nvarchar(max)? The reason I ask is I read that nvarchar(255) for unicode characters would actually store 1/2 the number of characters (since unicode characters are 2 bytes) whereas 255 with varchar() would allow me to store 255 characters (or is it 255 - 2 for the offset). Would there be any performance hits using nvarchar(max)? JDs

  As I know, from the relational database theory, a select statement without an order by clause should be considered has not particular order. But actually in SQL Server and Oracle (I've tested on those 2 platforms), if I query from a table without an order by clause multiple times, I always get the results in the same order. Does this behavior can be relied on? Anyone can help to explain a little? Thanks!

  I get my data from SQL to Dataset with Fill. It's just one table with two columns (CategoryId (int) and CategoryName (varchar)). When I look at my dataset after fill method, CategoryId Columns seems to be correct. But in the CategoryName I have a *System.Data.StrongTypingExceptio*n. What could that mean? Any Ideas?

  We have a server with a database that has a symmetric key (Database - Security - Symmetric Key). We have a backup duplicate databases that we are using as a test databases, but we don't have this key in there. How can I duplicate this symmetric key (or make a new one exactly like the old) and put it in the existing databases? It has to have the same value and key-name as the other one.   Hi, I've just installed a fresh copy of SQL 2008 Express. before I did anything I opened Management Studio and successfully connected using Window Authentication. However I tried to run the following on the command line "telnet localhost 1433" and got the error "Could not open connection to the host, on port 1433: Connect failed" I checked netstat and there is nothing listening on port 1433. Before I go any further, is there a problem with the install? thanks, Shane

I have had a request from the client, however, to make it possible to export the database as it stands, and be able to use it on a laptop without connectivity. They understand that updates to the parent server will not be reflected in these offline clients. Is there a way I can just save the DataSet's to a binary form and write them to a disk and send those files to the offline clients.

  Hi everyone, SELECT * FROM jobs WHERE (SELECT DISTINCT jobs.* FROM jobs, job_requests WHERE (jobs.user_id = 1) OR (job_requests.user_id = 1 AND job_requests.job_id = jobs.id)) This sql gives me Mysql::Error: Operand should contain 1 column(s). If i execute the select from the where clause it works SELECT DISTINCT jobs.* FROM jobs, job_requests WHERE (jobs.user_id = 1) OR (job_requests.user_id = 1 AND job_requests.job_id = jobs.id) Could somebody explain me why? This query is generated by rails activerecord so the main select is needed.

  Hi, I just noticed that if I have an identity column in a table, when I insert new rows MS SQL 2008 is automatically filling up the sequence if there are discontinuity. I mean, if in my identity column I have 1,2,5,6 if I insert other two rows in the table the system puts automatically 3,7 in the identity column. Do you know how to control this behavior? THANKS

In Oracle, I would say this: TO_DATE('10/15/2008 10:06:32 PM','MM/DD/YYYY HH:MI:SS AM') This question implies that I must parse the string into one of the standard formats, and then convert using one of those codes. That seems ludicrous for such a mundane operation. Is there an easier way?
