• JCP.Next - Early Adopters of JCP 2.8

  JCP.Next is a series of three JSRs (JSR 348, JSR 355 and JSR 358), to be defined through the JCP process itself, with the JCP Executive Committee serving as the Expert Group. The proposed JSRs will modify the JCP's processes  - the Process Document and Java Specification Participation Agreement (JSPA) and will apply to all new JSRs for all Java platforms.   The first - JCP.next.1, or more formally JSR 348, Towards a new version of the Java Community Process - was completed and put into effect in October 2011 as JCP 2.8. This focused on a small number of simple but important changes to make our process more transparent and to enable broader participation. We're already seeing the benefits of these changes as new and existing JSRs adopt the new requirements. The second - JSR 355, Executive Committee Merge, is also Final. You can read the JCP 2.9 Process Document .  As part of the JSR 355 Final Release, the JCP Executive Committee published revisions to the JCP Process Document (version 2.9) and the EC Standing Rules (version 2.2).  The changes went into effect following the 2012 EC Elections in November. The third JSR 358, A major revision of the Java Community Process was submitted in June 2012.  This JSR will modify the Java Specification Participation Agreement (JSPA) as well as the Process Document, and will tackle a large number of complex issues, many of them postponed from JSR 348. For these reasons, the JCP EC (acting as the Expert Group for this JSR), expects to spend a considerable amount of time working on. The JSPA is defined by the JCP as "a one-year, renewable agreement between the Member and Oracle. The success of the Java community depends upon an open and transparent JCP program.  JSR 358, A major revision of the Java Community Process, is now in process and can be followed on java.net. The following JSRs and Spec Leads were the early adopters of JCP 2.8, who voluntarily migrated their JSRs from JCP 2.x to JCP 2.8 or above.  More candidates for 2012 JCP Star Spec Leads! • Visual Studio reference x64 GAC

  How can one get Visual Studio 2005/2008 to reference assemblies in the 64-bit GAC instead of the 32-bit GAC? We are settin the target platfom to x64 and the compiler is throwing the error of Error 2 Warning as Error: Assembly generation -- Referenced assembly 'System.Data.dll' targets a different processor Common Error 3 Warning as Error: Assembly generation -- Referenced assembly 'mscorlib.dll' targets a different processor Common Error 4 Assembly signing failed; output may not be signed -- The system cannot find the file specified. Common Update 29 Dec 08 Been trying out Aaron Stebner's suggestions to place 64-bit assemblies onto an isolated location (e.g. C:\Windows\Microsoft.NET\Framework64\v2.0.50727\GAC_64) and creating additional entries in the registry like HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft.NETFramework\AssemblyFolders\GAC_64 or HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft.NETFramework\v2.0.50727\AssemblyFoldersEx\GAC_64 but Visual Studio 2005 is still not picking it up....

• Actionscrips/Flex4: Display cut-off datapoints differently in LineChart

  Dear Sirs, The issue arises when the user selects a range on the linechart that cuts off datapoints. When this happens, I would like the chart to tell the user somehow that there are data points three, just outside the range, perhaps by drawing a straight line across the top or bottom of the graph. • Remove Registry Keys for Windows Phone 7 Emulator

  I am trying to get the updated Windows Phone 7 tools installed, but can't get rid of the old ones. The uninstaller wouldn't run, so I had to try more extreme means. I got everything removed except for "Microsoft Windows Phone Emulator x64". Does anyone know what vm_web.exe (the tool installer) is checking for (registry, file, etc.) that prevents the installer from running. I tried Aaron Stebner's clean up tool, and it helped a lot, but couldn't get rid of the emulator.

• What ports does Advantage Database Server need?

  I have an application which uses ADS and I am attempting to deploy it in a Windows network environment with a rather restrictive firewall. I am having a problem configuring firewall ports appropriately. ADS lives on \server, and it's listening on port 1234. When \client tries to connect to \server\tables, I get Error 6420 (Discovery process failed). When \client tries to connect to \server:1234\tables, I get error 6097, bad IP address specified in the connection path. \server is pingable from \client, and I can telnet to \server:1234. If I try to connect from a client machine inside the firewall, either connection path works fine. It seems there must be something else I need to open in the firewall. Any ideas? Thanks, Aaron.

  I have a question regarding using KVO-compliant methods to insert/remove objects from an array. I'm working through Aaron Hillegass' Cocoa Programming for Mac OS X and I saw the following line of code (in the insertObject:inEmployeesAtIndex: method: [[undoManager prepareWithInvocationTarget:self] removeObjectFromEmployeesAtIndex:index]; Correct me if I'm wrong, but I always thought it was better to call mutableArrayValueForKey: and then removeObjectAtIndex:...so I tried changing the above line to this: [[undoManager prepareWithInvocationTarget:[self mutableArrayValueForKey:@"employees"]] removeObjectAtIndex:index]; And it didn't work. Can someone explain the difference and why the first line works but the second line doesn't?

• How to use Code Igniter to show Dynamic images via javascript(jQuery).

  You can use the URL helper in Code Igniter to load CSS and Javascript with the base_url() method, but what if you have images dynamically being placed into your HTML via javascript? for example in my javascript file I've got var arrowimages={down:['downarrowclass', 'images/down.png', 23], right:['rightarrowclass', 'images/right.png']} and those images will be placed into whatever menu item I've specified has a drop down menu. but that file is a .js file so obviously the server won't load php inside of it. so, how can I set the base url for the JS? • Xbox 360 formatting for MP4 h.264?

  For the life of me, I can't get the Xbox 360 to recognize anything other than a WMV. It's full updated with Xbox Live and I even added all the Video apps (Zune, Netflix, etc) just to see if it would force some sort of codec update. I'm using handbrake, at the moment, to try and convert an mkv with subtitles. Handbrake burns the subtitles into the video for me, which is important. I can't figure out what is missing though, as the Xbox refuses to acknowledge my MP4s. Here's the VLC codec info output: As far as I can tell, this is EXACTLY what the xbox supports. I don't want to convert every video twice by throwing it through Windows Movie Maker just to get it to WMV. None of the converters mentions above output to WMV and I don't like WMV since it's not as universal as MP4. I've tried changing the container name manually to M4V, MOV, and AVI to see if I can trick the Xbox... no beans. The video displays perfectly in WMP, of course. If I convert it to WMV, suddenly it works fine. But I don't find this acceptable, as I know the Xbox is supposed to support other filetypes. If anyone knows why my Xbox won't play anything but WMVs, I would be very appreciative to know why! It's driving me nuts. The only other information I can think to include is that it's about 3 years old and of the cheapest variety (Xbox Arcade). I've added a hard drive, xbox live, and have thoroughly updated it. Maybe there's a specific video update I'm unaware of??

• Fedora-13 not detecting USB HDD enclosure (with HDD)

  I recently purchased this enclosure: http://www.amazon.com/Inland-2-5-Inc.../dp/B003SZ2Y12 and this HDD: http://www.amazon.com/Seagate-Barrac...3811667&sr=8-1 Now, I let my brother in law use the enclosure with his 160GB disk to back some stuff up. He then gave me that disk in my enclosure and I backed up my computer and my fiances computer. So...obviously, i had no problem mounting that disk. I plan on keeping this disk as my "natural disaster backup" (in case my apartment building burns down, i still have that disk with my stuff backed up). I want to use the 1.5T disk as my regular/more frequent backup device, but it doesn't seem to be mounting to my F-13 machine. I searched through this forum and found someone advising to run the following: # mount -t vfat /dev/sda1 /mnt this is the output i get when I run that: mount: /dev/sda1 already mounted or /mnt busy mount: according to mtab, /dev/sda1 is mounted on /boot Thing is, shouldn't this disk automatically mount just like the LAST disk in the same enclosure with the same USB cable and power supply? Any help would be greatly appreciated. THANKS!

• DPM 2007 clashing with existing SQL backup job

  I've recently installed a DPM2007 server on Server 2003 and have set up a protection group against a server 2003 server running SQL 2005 SP3. The SQL server in question has a full backup (as a sql agent job) once a day and transaction log backups hourly. These are zipped up and FTP'd to a server offsite by a scheduled task. Since adding the DPM job I'm receiving many error messages: DPM tried to do a SQL log backup, either as part of a backup job or a recovery to latest point in time job. The SQL log backup job has detected a discontinuity in the SQL log chain for database SERVER_NAME\DB_Name since the last backup. All incremental backup jobs will fail until an express full backup runs. My google-fu suggests that I need to change the full backup my sqlagent job is running to a copy_only job. But I think this means that I can't use that backup with the transaction_logs to restore the database if the building (including the DPM server) burns down. I'm sure I'm missing something obvious and thought I'd see what the hivemind suggests. It is an option to set-up a co-located DPM server elsewhere and have DPM stream the backup but that's obviously more expensive than the current set up. Many thanks in advance

• Dealing with AVCHD. Any free software to extract or edit AVCHD video?

  I have a Panasonic HDC-SD5 video carmera which records in HD format to a memory card. It also came with a DVD burner which burns this format to DVD which I need a blu-ray player to view. I can get about 30 min worth of video on 1 DVD. My problem is the software that comes with the camera is not very good at all so I am constantly just using the 'backup' feature in the included burner (connect drive to camera, push backup, and it spits out up to 4 DVDs worth of HD video). Now that I have the video backed up on DVD in the HD format (blu-ray), is there any free software that I can use to edit this video and create other HD DVD's with my own menus, transitions, etc? I was considering buying Pinnacle Studio but I wanted to exaust any free options before biting the bullet. Any suggestions for software I could use or anything else I could do to make dealing with this AVCHD format any easier that I am unaware of? Edit: Sorry forgot to include that I am running Windows Vista 64-bit. Edit: Still haven't found anything that is truely free. Everything has limitations by either time, watermark the video or degrade the quality. Edit: So I still haven't found really anything, so is there some software I can use to convert the video to another format that I then could use to edit the video?

• Can I use a Windows Server 2003 Domain Controller but my home router for DNS?

  Hi All Probably easiest to start with a description of my current setup, which works (oh, and this is a home setup not an office or anything): I have an ADSL modem with a static IP address (192.168.128.1), and its DHCP capability is disabled. I have a permanently powered up Windows Server 2003 machine with a fixed IP (192.168.128.2) which provides my domain controller, dhcp, and dns. The default gateway for everything is my ADSL modem everything is setup to use the WS2003 machine as the primary DNS with the ADSL modem as Secondary DNS just in case the server goes down (everything includes the server itself). Lastly, just in case it's relevant, I have my DHCP leases set to infinite (or whatever the right term is). Everything is pretty hunky dory. Except, that is, for the fact that my server is ALWAYS on, and it isn't always used, so I'm burning juice that I don't need to - my server burns around 120W which isn't immense but isn't irrelevant either, so I'd like to put it into a stand-by state when it isn't being used (the more standby the better) and then get the clients to wake it up. Am I correct in assuming that this won't work at the moment - A given client would need an IP address to wake the machine up, and it needs to machine to be awake to get an IP - catch 22? Assuming I'm correct, can I move to using my router (which is always on) for DHCP? What impact will this have on DC and DNS? Alternatively, does anyone have a better way for me to achieve this? Can I get the server to wake up when it sees clients look for a DHCP server, etc? Wow, that came out longer than expected! Thanks for your help.

• Keeping Xv Overlay configuration throughout an X session.

  After upgrading my Linux system from Ubuntu 9.04 to Ubuntu 10.10, I suceeded correcting most problems (all related to Intel 82865G Integrated Graphics Adapter support and compiz is still not working but that's another matter) but for one I only have a partial solution. Whenever I play a video the colors are much too saturated. This is really a problem for tones of skins that appears reddish (everyone seems to be coming back from a ski vacation with deep sun burns). As this effect only occurs with videos, not with pictures, I finally figured out it was related to Video Overlays configuration and I can correct it typing: xvattr -a XV_SATURATION -v 120 This change the default saturation value, which is 500 and much too high in my case, at eye sight the correct value seems to be between 100 and 150. Now my problem is that I have to type the above command each time I run a video. If I type it before running the video it has no effect, if I close the video and open a new one, I have to type it again, etc. I tried to put it in Xsession and (logically) it has no effect either. How could I do to get the correct setting whenever I run a video without typing the above command every time ?

• Copying windows home server backup offsite

  What ways are there to copy a windows home server backup to an offsite location? I'm talking specifically (and only) about the automated backup of my entire machine, and not the shared network folders. I am 90% working away from home on my laptop which has a 640GB drive so the shared folders are essentially useless to me. I backup every night, but if my house burns down or broken into the I'm in serious serious trouble ! I'm really looking for some alternative way to back up my entire machine - which much not interfere with the reliability or speed by which my WHS backs up my laptop every night. Either a way to 'export' a complete machine backup from the server, or recommendations on non-conflicting software I can backup to a 1TB drive at work are what I'm looking for. Note: I believe that WHS uses its own completely proprietary backup and doesn't use things like any 'backup bit' or 'archive bit'. I just dont want to install some other backup software that will conflict. PS I'm now running Windows 7 and just realized that I should probably check out the backup functionality it gives me. I assume that won't conflict right! Edit: Thanks for the hosted solutions. I'd also appreciate ways to backup to an 'offsite' location that I control - like my office vs. my home. The hosted solutions I think will be too slow or expensive for my needs.

• DVD/CD burning .zip: is it more reliable, faster, longer lasting to burn a zip of files rather than the files as a folder?

  Is it more reliable, faster, longer lasting to burn to CD/DVD a zip (or a few large zips) of files rather than the files as a folder? Just thinking if 1000s of small files would not be as efficiently recorded compared with one or a few large zips. Also, even after the burning program verifies the disc, I also use Beyond Compare to compare the files with those on the disc. Always binary compares as identical but I hear the drive stuttering presumably as the head is being shifted only slightly each time to seek the next file, which leads me to think that its best to make one or more zips and copy those locally to compare. Or is it that burning invidual files to the disc is not as readable which causes the head to stutter. There aren't any problems, my disc burns are reliable, just thinking more of efficiency and longevity, the discs burn and verify fast enough on my 18x DVD burner. I'm using ImgBurn mostly. Also used Nero in the past. I burn whole discs closed, finalised. Not sure which write mode but would think Disc At Once from a temporary cached image made by the burning program would be the most reliable.

• Exploding maps in Reporting Services 2008 R2

  Kaboom! Well, that was the imagery that secretly appeared in my mind when I saw “USA By State Exploded” in the list of installed maps in Report Builder 3.0 – part of the spatial offering of SQL Server Reporting Server 2008 R2. Alas, it just means that the borders are bigger. Clicking on it showed me. Unfortunately, I’m not interested in maps of the US. None of my clients are there (at least, not yet – feel free to get in touch if you want to change this ‘feature’ of my company). So instead, I’ve recently been getting hold of some data for Australian areas. I’ve just bought some PostCode shapes for South Australia, and will use this in demos for conferences and for showing clients how this kind of report can really impact their reporting. One of the companies I was talking about getting shape files sent me a sample. So I chose the “ESRI shapefile” option you see above, and browsed to my file. It appeared in the window like this: Australians will immediately recognise this as the area around Wollongong, just south of Sydney. Well, apart from me. I didn’t. I had to put a Bing Maps layer behind it to work that out, but that’s not for this post. The thing that I discovered was that if I selected the Exploded USA option (but without clicking Next), and then chose my shape file, then my area around Wollongong would be exploded too! Huh! I think this is actually a bug, but a potentially useful one! Some further investigation (involving creating two identical reports, one with this exploded view, one without), showed that the Exploded View is done by reducing the ScaleFactor property of the PolygonLayer in the map control. The Exploded version has it below 1. If you set to above one, your shapes overlap. I discovered this by accident… I guess I hadn’t looked through all the PolygonLayer options to work out what they all do. • Software to automate website screenshot capture

  Do you know any software that can automate the process of getting screenshots of every page of a website? It would act like a spider/crawler/robot. You name it... For example: I developed a website and now I'd like to get a screenshot of every page of the site. I of course could do it manually (a lot of work). For each module of the site (Student, Payment, etc) I have different pages (Create, Edit, Details, Delete, etc) forms. The thing I'm looking for is a software that can visit every link of the site and then capture the screen - a software that can automate the whole process. It would also be good if the software allowed the user to pass a list of URLs to capture screenshots allowing even more fine grained configuration. EDIT: I tried Selenium mentioned by Aaron in his answer but I managed to find an app that does exactly what I needed. It's called Paparazzi!. • storing session data in mysql using php is not retrieving the data properly from the tables.

  I have a problem retrieving some data from the $_SESSION using php and mysql. I've commented out the line in php.ini that tells the server to use the "file" to store the session info so my database will be used. I have a class that I use to write the information to the database and its working fine. When the user passes their credentials the class gets instantiated and the $_SESSION vars get set, then the user gets redirected to the index page. The index.php page includes the file where the db session class is, which when instantiated calles session_start() and the session variables should be in $_SESSION, but when I do var_dump($_SESSION) there is nothing in the array. However, when I look at the data in mysql, all the session information is in there. Its acting like session_start() has not been called, but by instantiating the class it is. Any idea what could be wrong? • Regular Expressions Cookbook Is in The Money—Win a Copy

That’s not true because most authors get an advance royalty that is paid before the book is published. That’s the author’s main incentive for writing the book, at least as far as money is concerned. (If money is your main concern, don’t write books.) What is true is that most authors never see any money beyond the advance royalty. Royalty rates are very low. A 10% royalty of the publisher’s price is considered normal. The publisher’s price is usually 45% of the retail price. So if you pay full price in a bookstore, the author gets 4.5% of your money. If there’s more than one author, they split the royalty. It doesn’t take a math degree to figure out that a book needs to sell quite a few copies for the royalty to add up to a meaningful amount of money. But Steven and I must have done something right. Regular Expressions Cookbook is in the money. My royalty statement for the 3rd quartier of 2009, which is the 2nd quarter that the book was on the market, came with a check. I actually received it last month but didn’t get around to blogging about. The amount of the check is insignificant. The point is that the balance is no longer negative. • What I Expect From Myself This Year

  I am making it a point not to call them resolutions, because the word has become an institution and is beginning to have no meaning. That's why I end up not keeping my resolutions, I think. So in the spirit of holding myself to my own commitments, I will make a plan and some realistic goals. 1.) Lose weight. Everyone has this on their list, but I am going to be conservative and specific. I currently weigh 393lbs. (yeah, I know). So I want to plan to lose 10lbs per month, that's 1lb. every three days, that shouldn't be difficult if I stick to my diet and exercise plan. - How do I do this?     - Diet: vegetarian. Since I already know I have high blood pressure and borderline high cholesterol, a meat-free diet is in order. I was vegan for a little over 2 years in 2006-2008, I think I can handle vegetarian.     - Exercise: at least 3 times (preferably every day) a week for 30 minutes. It has to be something that gets my heart rate up, or burns in my muscles. I can walk for cardio to start and mild calisthenics (girly push-ups, crunches, etc.).         - Move: I spend all my time behind the computer. I have recently started to use a slight variation of the Pomodoro Technique (my Pomodoros are 50 minutes instead of 25). During my 10 minutes every hour to answer emails, chats, etc., I will take a few minutes to stretch. 2.) Get my wife pregnant. We've been talking about it for years. Now that she is done with graduate school and I have a great job, now's the time. We'll be the oldest parents in the PTA most likely, but I don't care. 3.) Blog More. Another favorite among bloggers, but I do have about six drafts for blog posts started. The topics are there all I need to do is flesh out the post. This can be the first hour of any computer time I have after work. As soon as I am done exercising, shower and post. 4.) Speak less. Most people want to speak more. I want to concentrate on the places that I enjoy and that can really use the speakers (like local code camps), rather than trying to be some national speaker. I love speaking at conferences, but I need to spend some more time at home if we're going to get pregnant. 5.) Read more. I got a Kindle for Christmas and I am loving it so far. I have almost finished Treasure Island, and am getting ready to pick my next book. I will probably read a lot of classics for 2 reasons: (1) they teach deep lessons and (2) most are free for the Kindle. 6.) Find my religion. I was raised Southern Baptist, but I want to find my own way. I've been wanting to go to the local Unitarian Church, so I will make a point to go before the end of March. I also want to add a few religious books to my reading list. My boss bought me a copy of Lee Strobel's The Case for Christ: A Journalist's Personal Investigation of the Evidence for Jesus , and I have a copy of Bruce Feiler's Abraham: A Journey to the Heart of Three Faiths (P.S.) . I will start there. Seems like a lot now that I spell it out like this. But these are only starters. I am forty years old. I cannot keep living like I am twenty anymore. So here we go, 2011.

• JCP Awards 10 Year Retrospective

  As we celebrate 10 years of JCP Program Award recognition in 2012,  take a look back in the Retrospective article covering the history of the JCP awards.  Most recently, the JCP awards were  celebrated at JavaOne Latin America in Brazil, where SouJava was presented the JCP Member of the Year Award for 2012 (won jointly with the London Java Community) for their contributions and launch of the Global Adopt-a-JSR Program. This is also a good time to honor the JCP Award Nominees and Winners who have been designated as Star Spec Leads.  Spec Leads are key to the Java Community Process (JCP) program. Without them, none of the Java Specification Requests (JSRs) would have begun, much less completed and become implemented in shipping products.  Nominations for 2012 Start Spec Leads are now open until 31 December. The Star Spec Lead program recognizes Spec Leads who have repeatedly proven their merit by producing high quality specifications, establishing best practices, and mentoring others. The point of such honor is to endorse the good work that they do, showcase their methods for other Spec Leads to emulate, and motivate other JCP program members and participants to get involved in the JCP program. Ed Burns – A Star Spec Lead for 2009, Ed first got involved with the JCP program when he became co-Spec Lead of JSR 127, JavaServer Faces (JSF), a role he has continued through JSF 1.2 and now JSF 2.0, which is JSR 314. Linda DeMichiel – Linda thus involved in the JCP program from its very early days. She has been the Spec Lead on at least three JSRs and an EC member for another three. She holds a Ph.D. in Computer Science from Stanford University. Gavin King – Nominated as a JCP Outstanding Spec Lead for 2010, for his work with JSR 299. His endorsement said, “He was not only able to work through disputes and objections to the evolving programming model, but he resolved them into solutions that were more technically sound, and which gained support of its pundits.” Mike Milikich –  Nominated for his work on Java Micro Edition (ME) standards, implementations, tools, and Technology Compatibility Kits (TCKs), Mike was a 2009 Star Spec Lead for JSR 271, Mobile Information Device Profile 3. David Nuescheler – Serving as the CTO for Day Software, acquired by Adobe Systems, David has been a key player in the growth of the company’s global content management solution. In 2002, he became Spec Lead for JSR 170, Content Repository for Java Technology API, continuing for the subsequent version, JSR 283. Bill Shannon – A well-respected name in the Java community, Bill came to Oracle from Sun as a Distinguished Engineer and is still performing at full speed as Spec Lead for JSR 342, Java EE 7,  as an alternate EC member, and hands-on problem solver for the Java community as a whole. Jim Van Peursem – Jim holds a PhD in Computer Engineering. He was part of the Motorola team that worked with Sun labs on the Spotless VM that became the KVM. From within Motorola, Jim has been responsible for many aspects of Java technology deployment, from an independent Connected Limited Device Configuration (CLDC) and Mobile Information Device Profile (MIDP) implementations, to handset development, to working with the industry in defining many related standards. Participation in the JCP Program goes well beyond technical proficiency. The JCP Awards Program is an attempt to say “Thank You” to all of the JCP members, Expert Group Members, Spec Leads, and EC members who give their time to contribute to the evolution of Java technology.
