  • How to troubleshoot a hardware problem on linux?

    Just to note I am not having a problem at the moment, but have had previously so it sparked my curiosity... When a computer locks up suddenly to so caps lock flashes incessantly and the only possibility to restart....how do you troubleshoot what is causing it? On Windows there would be some errors in the event log...on Linux it seems there is no opportunity for anything to be written to the log, making it hard to troubleshoot... In this case, how would you troubleshoot the problem through linux?

But the distribution doesn't by default come with the C development environment and I am facing some issues when trying to install the gcc. Is there any other small Linux distribution which by default has the required packages for the C development.     Is there a way to use rdesktop or another Linux client to connect to a server that requires Network Level Authentication? From Windows Server 2008 R2 -- Control Panel -- System And Security -- System -- Allow Remote Access there is an option that says "Allow connections only from computers running Remote Desktop with Network Level Authentication". So with this enabled I can con not connect from Linux. I can connect from XP but you need SP3 and I had to edit a couple of things in the registry for it to work.

    Is there a way to watch Linux boot as though it was a program compiled with GCC on a Linux environment using the -g switch so, say, I can step through the entire boot sequence from GRUB onwards, choosing to step through at C source level or assembly when necessary/desirable, by using GDB or a GDB-like tool? I suspect it would require a virtual machine at least, to watch the boot on a host environment. Any elaboration on this topic of observing a boot would be appreciated!

As it turns out, I'd like to have a REALLY secure SSH password for obvious reasons, but a less secure local password, as it makes typing in passwords a heck of a lot easier on a machine. For what I need, Tor seems to do the job – but such software requires configuration that someone who is not knowledgeable in how it works might find difficult.     I have a LAN and i need to create a LAB with three VLAN on my boxes, Linux and FreeBSD. so i create a VLAN 1 on the linux box as follow: sudo vconfig add eth0 1 sudo ifconfig eth0.1 inet6 add 2001:470:9b36:1:1::2/64 and i do the same on the FreeBSD box: sudo ifconfig vlan1 create sudo ifconfig vlan1 inet6 2001:470:9b36:1:1::1 prefixlen 64 vlan 1 vlandev bge0 But i still not able to ping the VLANs from each side ? NB: the eth0 and bge0 are up and running

    I thought I had a good understanding of how permissions worked on linux. I have folder where it and everything inside has the owner "me" and the group "group". I gave the group rwx access on all the files and still members of the group cannot modify permissions on any files. I'm using Redhat Enterprise Linux 5 Is it possible to allow group members to modify permissions on file and not just the owner? How? Thanks in advance

    Task at hand After a virtual disk has been added to a Linux VM on vSphere 5, we need to identify the disks in order to automate the LVM storage provision. The virtual disks may reside on different datastores (e.g. sas or flash) and although they may be of the same size, their speed may vary. So I need a method to map the vSphere disks to Linux devices. Only the first hex digit is different (5 vs. 6) and it is only present to the third hyphen. So this looks promising... Alternative idea Select disks by controller. But is it reliable that the ascending SCSI Id also matches the next vSphere virtual disk? What happens if I add another DVD-ROM drive / USB Thumb drive? This will probably introduce new SCSI devices in between. Thats the cause why I think I will discard this idea. Questions Does someone know an easier method to map vSphere disks and Linux devices? Can someone explain the differences in the uuid strings? (I think this has something to do with SAS adressing initiator and target... WWN like...) May I reliably map devices by using those uuid strings? How about SCSI virtual disks? There is no uuid visible then... This task seems to be so obvious. Why doesn't Vmware think about this and simply add a way to query the disk mapping via Vmware Tools?

    I happen to install model sim VHDL simulator on Linux. The manual says it only supports RedHat or Suse, but I just tried to install it on Ubuntu. And, it just installed and works perfectly.     I'm trying to determine if this linex webserver/openfire server has been compromised by some form of malware or a hacker. Can you please help me determine if this server has been hacked?     I want to port over a Drupal commons 6x24 from a local LAMP-stack to a production webserver. Both systems run OpenSuse Linux. How do I do this, what are the most important steps.
